R-Type III: The Third Lightning (SNES) - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Irem's 1994 shoot 'em up for the Super Nintendo, R-Type III: The Third Lightning.
This video shows both loops through the game. After beating it the first time you are given access to the Advanced mode. Finishing this harder loop gives the final ending. I think this is probably my best play to date of this one, I can't can't believe I only died once. Usually I'm near my last life by the end.
This is a fantastic follow-up to Super R-Type. It's a fair amount easier (except for the final two stages - you stand no chance of getting through those without memorizing EVERY pattern), and it still had some issues with slowdown, but they're much improved. The soundtrack carries on Super R-Type's incredible synth pop-rock style guitar/orchestra hit theme, there are some insanely impressive graphic effects rivaling those in Konami's shooters on display, and it oozes personality, even with the censorship in the US version.
If you're a shmup fanatic or a SNES nut, this system-exclusive entry in the hallowed Irem series is an amazing way to hone those twitch skills.

That shot of the ship's core, fading through the chassis to the overview of the ship itself blasting into view is still one of the coolest sequences I've ever seen in a game.
Its very impressive when you consider the SNES can only scale 1 image at a time and it appears that many layers are being scaled
@@worsethanhitlerpt.2539and it seems to overlap with transparency. Looks very nice!

I wonder how the hell I should have beaten the game as a kid
Never got past the second lvl as a kid hahahahaha
easy... you didnt
With enough continues
I fired this game up for the first time yesterday, i think on on the last stage..i just beat the laser ball thing after going backwards through one of the hardest stages to get to it
All you need is ridiculous persistence and patience....
You don't beat R-Type. R-Type beats you. With a good 'paddlin.
What a great, but hard, game with many nice ideas and good music. And all those transparency, scaling and rotation effects with almost no slowdown - it looks awesome! The whole game is easily one of the best looking shmups on 16bit home consoles.
A series at its creative apex, a showcase for its system, and harder than balls to boot. This is for SNES what Thunder Force IV is for the Genesis/Mega Drive.
I had both, Thunderforce IV is a much better game, including as a technical showpiece, with its large vertically scrolling levels and insane amount of parallax. It was also much better than its predecessors and was never topped on Megadrive. R-Type 3 remains inferior to the original, and wasn't the best SCHMUP on the system.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 I agree. The Thunder Force series is my favorite shoot em up series ever. Great music, fantastic graphics, and solid gameplay. I still can't believe how gargantuan TFIV still looks and sounds, even today.
@Lucas The Megadrive couldn't do rotation, that was a SNES feature. But it pushed the Megadrive more than RIII pushed the SNES. The parallax scrolling and sense of scale, was also miles better than anything else-including R.III. Even Echo the Dolphin/II wasn't as gorgeous, nor have as many layers.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 That's where Axelay steps in, great gameplay, incredible visuals, challenging gameplay. Every stage has some kind of eye candy, making you wonder how they pulled it all off.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 I'll give you that, TF4 is just an overall better game and had better design. I almost wonder what they would have done if given the SNES hardware instead.
And after all these years I never knew how it ended....best ending ever!!
Gotta love how desperate the last boss truly is. It's dimensional gate is closing, but it has the strength to hold it open just enough to try and still kill you. Of course one dose of the Force fired backwards into it's mouth is just the medicine you need to be rid of the pest once and for all.
How the hell it held open that portal is anyone's guess, likely sheer will and determination to exterminate you.
What if I tell you: That was not a dimensional gate at all, but an actual greater transdimensional creature?
What if I was to tell you it was all just a video game? No gate,... no creature, ... no R9 ship.
+fench1234567 What if I tell you: We're inside a video game and we're creating and playing video games?
StygianTraveler141 Then I'd take both the red and the blue pills and keep my fingers crossed.
Bloodreign1 I know right
I’m halfway through and this is a marvelous playthrough. Thanks for uploading it
A more-than-worthy follow-up to the excellent Super R-Type - the mode-7 spectacles alone make it worthwhile, but the game play is just as tight as you'd expect from the wizards at Irem. Think Axelay is awesome? Try this!
And boss designs were pretty cool too.
This kicks Axelay's ass!
Yeah, this was definitely a worthy sequel. They clearly put love and effort into its design and took advantage of mode-7 in some interesting ways. Super R-Type is also good as a sort of "greatest hits" of levels and enemies from I & II. :)
Not to mention that Konami even lied to us about a sequel to Axelay that eventually got cancelled.
Is the rotating platform in the background at 5:05 a Mode 7 effect?
Loved this game as a kid. I always thought to myself "I wonder what all this crazy ish looks like from that cockpit!" lol Very skilled run! Nice work.
An absolute gem!
I love how they implied the zero-g physics in the first level ^^
i like how the first stage of this game is a total space battle then it immediately throws you into a wtf dimension
@FlufflelosMagicus even gradius
Like a giant bugs and sea creatures dimensión.
I think the second stage of this game takes place inside a dying transdimensional Bydo monstrosity and the enemies and even the boss are just parasites living inside it. A few stages of the older R-Type games (I, II & Super) look like they are set on planets that have been overtaken and then occupied by the Bydo.
Thank you :) I appreciate it. So much practice went into this one!
This was my first snes game. Also love play Axelay from Konami.
>R-Type 3 is easier than Super R-Type
Christ on his throne, then Super R-Type must be impossible. R-Type 3 busts my balls with a cinder block.
Super R-Type is mainly brutal for it's lack of checkpoints. Die at a boss? Too bad, do the entire stage again.
Super R-Type's lack of checkpoints is what makes it so difficult.
@@Mateoski97 Super R Type has got unlimited continues, and the fact you can start from the beginning of the level just makes it better, because you can grab the powerups.
R Type III on the other hand becomes unfairly difficult after stage 4. On the later stages you really have to depend purely on your instinct and dexterity.
Especially since you lose your power ups whenever you die, so you might as well pick them up from the beginning of the stage.
@@KISSbestfanYou can get your powerups back pretty fast. Just be thankful that it isn't R-Type 2 difficulty. If you think this is harsh, try R-Type 2. The arcade version. This game busts your balls from stage 2 and onward.
R-Type 3's final boss is also a mercy compared to 1 and 2. It's still ridiculous and takes a lot of practice, but it is at least possible for us mear mortals.
This game as hard as hell. I just beat it but I used save states, and damn you're really skilled. PROPS to you.
i was born in 1981 and saw a lot of video games! This game has one of the best endings ever seen
Gives me anxiety by just looking at it.
The R-90 Ragnarok is blasting the Evil Bydo Empire in R-Type 3 The 3rd Lightning for your Super NES and Game Boy Advance from Irem!
The last 2 levels are fuckin terrifying exactly what you want from an RTYPE game.
After all these years, I still think irem should have made it another arcade perfect shoot them all. What a nicely done 2d shooter it is.
this was my favourite game as a kid....only ever made it to the 4th level, but I spent hours playing it....hearing the music and sound effects again 😍
This one or R-type I? This is the 3rd chapter, not very common that days ;)
@@erdebi This one definitely, hardly played R-Type 1 as a kid, but I ended up with R-Type 3 somehow and loved it...wish I still had my SNES and cartridge... 😄
Don't feel bad, I'm even worst, I never even made it to the second boss, got this game a few months ago and started to play it recently....😅😅

I love the 1st Boss Type theme and 3rd level theme.

Everyone before 1994: Sorry, the SNES just can't handle intense shooters like the Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 can lolz

Haha Irem: making bitches outta haters
Intense ?

Space megaforce, 1992. XD
very challenging game but you make it look easy. ,first played R-Type on a ZX Spectrum cover tape demo & always loved the series. R-Type deserves a modern remake. there's some great PS4 shmups, Sky Force Anniversary, SineMora, Project Root, GalaxZ
so new or reimagined R-Type would find a good home on PS4.
They could even just upgrade the graphics for R-Type Final for a PS4 version and I'd be happy.
Holy shit this game is still fantastic and you sir are a legend at this, I played a copy of this in the days of the U.F.O cartridge copying era and never had the Skill to complete.
Thank you for your upload I shall place your video in a folder with my game (snes emulator) and use it as a tutorial:)
PS if you are unemployed contact Nintendo! If you are employed then show this to your BOSS, PHENOMENAL SKILL,SIR:):)
Tyvm! It really is an uber hard game!

Does anyone still have this game? I do. And I can't get passed level two, I suck at it but love it. When I watched my older brother play when was really young I couldn't watch level two it scared the life out of me for some reason. ;-;
Rachel Granter Yeah I still have it and play it fairly regularly it’s always been one of my favorite shooters. I own the original arcade ones too.

muito bom, rsrs me diverti muito com esse game que pra mim foi impossível de terminar
My dad's favorite Super Nintendo game.
I was testing all forms of the phantom cell at hard mode and the form with these turrets circling surprised me, at the start it's not hard, but its pure evil if you don't kill it fast because it will keep forcing you to leave the center frequently, return and leave to the other side.
The moment that bangin soundtrack hits on stage 1 and the devs start going ham with the mode 7 you knew this would be a good game
If you like mode 7 buy this game
GENIUS

30:45 Now this is one dimensional rift I don’t want a part of!!!
Brutal!!
I hope I'm not the only one who knows that the R-type series would never exist if it hadn't been for Gradius.
Gradius did came first and then R-Type. But they're both different franchises who are unique and original in and of themselves!
Those 2 series are the granddaddies of more modern shmups, a lot of later shmups on the SNES, Genesis, and PC Engine owe a lot to these 2 series, as well as a third series, Darius.
that last boss looked insanely hard
Such a great game. I had a friend from Dcemulation buy this game for me back in 2005. Don't think I'll ever beat it. Took me 5 hours to complete it the first loop there is NO WAY I am going to play a shmup for 10+ hours in one sitting!!!! As for Super Rtype.. I hope someone at rom hacking fixes the check point problem, Game is hard to enjoy with being sent back to the beginning of the level if you fail! Rtype... Hardest shmups EVER!

I beat Super R-type as a kid. It's totally doable with enough practice.
I puckered so hard at 6:55, can't think how many times I panicked in stage 2 due to being conditioned in stage 1 that touch = death
This is easy compare to what's nexr You have get use to it ant then You'll pass.
I do own a SNES and I did play this game before my old snes stopped working so I got a new one but some of my game were missing including this one and I didn't beat this game yet I got it after I got a new SNES system back in 2012
"No cheats were used during the recording of this video"
Got thru normal but Im not going to keep my snes on for days to play through Advanced, the game is good but it needs a way to select the advanced mode.
cara tu e vera parabéns !!!
1:01:30 Can anyone tell me how this boss is harder in the hard mode? It seems exactly the same. It doesn't have more health or attack more or move faster like all the one ones do.
Holy crap found this and sunset riders in a bundle at the swap today $9 each!!!! So hyped
D00D /highfive I got RT3 on emulator, and I fucking love it. Brought an old relic back to life. Still can't get past the stage where you have to go backwards '-'
MediCali951 You are very, very lucky dude, those games tend to be pricey nowadays! And Sunset Riders is great!
Holy shit, nice deal!
People dont realize this is more of a graphical spectacle than most ps4 games.
I Agree.
16 bits forever and ever, baybayyyyy
this games animations and art actually had me jaw dropped and I was born long after the 16 bit era passed lol
genuinely crazy for 1993
At the end - 'Thank you for playing. You are a super player!' They didn't say it lightly.
I love how the GBA version sounds.
System exclusive? It's also on the GBA. But very nice play as it's a really hard game.
*You're at the last boss but there are still 40 mins left of the video*
"Wait, what's going on? Isn't this the end?"
*advanced mode starts with like 3-4 times more speed and a gajillion bullets*
"Whew, this is insane!"
Foreal, props for the mad skills! I was sweating even though I was just watching. Cool game but some of the design seems borderline unfair. Having to go backwards on stage 4 (right?), I'd probably put the game down and never pick it up again. xD
You die un 51:28!!! This game is a nightmare in the hell because its dificulty...
I've given up on beating this game after finding out there's a whole new level AND boss after the 5 stage boss :(
Try playing thru with type 2 "shadow" force. It's deceptively powerful ... Blue especially.
How do you do the hyper beam attack in this game please tell me!!!
Charge your shot for a few seconds, the bar should fill, keep holding, it will charge a second time. Then let it go, your charge will then overheat, but your shots will be powerful, but must cool down to use it again. It was done this way so players didn't abuse it.
In my personal opinion, I think this is one of the best games in the R-Type series, and the Bydo empire has the will to fight compared to bacteriaon in Gradius.
Unlike the Bacterion, the Bydo are created by mankind, and is it's biggest mistake.
Nice Game
:O
this game look very hard!
Looks? Oh it is, trust me.
Please, is this gameplay Tool assisted?

I wish Irem ported or made an R-Type game for the Genesis. I know they brought R-Type 1 to the Master system but damn I wish it was brought to the Gen instead.
But yeah this is def one of the very best Snes games and definitely one of my most favorite from the generation. The competition between this and Thunder Force IV is real but I still give it to the mighty Thunder if I had to choose.
Retro Soul
Yeah! As a snes fan, I am very curious to see how R-type will be on the genesis!
Sega themselves done the conversion for the Master System. I think Nintendo had Irem tied up in their illegal contracts along with Capcom and Konami.
@@trip2themoon
What kind of nonsense is that?
Eh?
Nintendo had tied companies like Konami and Capcom up in contracts stating that they could only make games for them. The contracts turned out to be illegal. It was because of these contracts that early Capcom games on the Mega Drive like Strider and Ghouls and Ghosts were converted by Sega themselves. They did eventually suss out the contracts were dodgy so later on in the MD's life you got games like Contra and Castlevania that were developed straight from Konami.
Yeah, it's really frustrating that Nintendo did that, cornering 2 if not 3 of the most talented developers into only their platforms. What bullshit, I'm so glad that got turned around before it was too late.
Hard as shit just like all the other r types
Eita jogo bem joguei muito
The part where you go back, omg, used to hate it

Yo this is rios old student of yours found something you might enjoy look up oataking he made a fan animation of this game you might enjoy it
Oh yeah? Do you have a link? And which Rios are you? I've known quite a few ;)
Great game, the GBA version has some advantages like clearer sprites, but the SNES version has way better sound and doesn’t have some screen crunch.
The GBA version was horrible, the team that did the port, I believe an Italian group, didn't have access to the original source code, so they had to build the game from scratch.
The game's great, but some of those bosses except for the last one are weak against your overpowered ship once you have all the upgrades. It looks like they take about six to ten hits before they go KA-BOOM in one big series of fireballs. At lease you kept the game intact and didnt change it. I still own a N64 and plan on keeping from now on.
R Type's bosses are usually quite easy when you have your full weapons. In the first game the stage 2 boss only needs 2 blasts of the red weapon to finish it and it's possible to destroy the giant ship in stage 3 before the Boss music even kicks in.
Who is this alien they keep building?
👌
9:12 @NintendoComplete. Try to search R-type III censorship, or play the JP version of the game and you will see what they were originally the Necrosaur's enemies/projectiles.
The first ever (if not one of the first) game that was intentionally made ball-busting difficult because they wanted to counteract the rising popularity of rental games.
I dunno dude, I can remember a lot of ball bustingly difficult games before it. And before rentals became a thing, no less.
What do you mean? Contra? Mario bros? Life force?
JALECO, same guys who did Super EDF :o
Irem did this game, Jaleco just did US distribution.

Finally finished this game a few days ago on the hacked mini classic after dying 1000x (save scummed like a motherfucker). After watching the other two videos which are very good, you are definitely the best player! Whatever happened to R-Type from Irem? Well, as fate would have it, Irem America Corp. closed its doors, and sold the game to Jaleco. What Jaleco received is one of the best space shooters ever.
They didn't sell the game to Jaleco, at the time Irem had no real way to distribute the game themselves in the US, so Jaleco stepped in to distribute the game in North America for Irem.
Oh, I see what has happened here. You accidentally mislabeled the Playstation/Saturn port of R-Type for the Snes one. Don't worry, it could happen to anyone....;)
Addendum- In all seriousness, the graphics in this are Thunder Force IV good.
