While SNES has the better graphics, it is a censored version that suffers from control input lag and lacks some of the arcade game aesthetics (the proper bio and ending screens for characters). While Genesis is inferior in graphics and missing a good deal of sound effects, the feel of the game is more faithful to the arcade in regard to controls, the game's trademark blood and gore, and having proper bio and ending screens.

In 1993 the Genesis version was the most played Mortal Kombat out of the Arcade and SNES versions, for that alone we have to give a lot of credit and respect to the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat. The Genesis Mortal Kombat is a Masterpiece in my opinion. Not shown here but the Title Screen was like the Arcade on the Genesis version. The first select screen and also the Goro lives was closer to the Arcade on the Genesis version. The Genesis version is a Classic. Plays great, is in 320 resolution, looks amazing in RGB and the soundtrack some say is better than the Arcade version and the Sega CD version. Also the Sega Genesis is closer to the arcade from the bottom of the floor on some stages. Where on the Snes version its like the floor got lifted up or something on some of stages, which it doesn't look like that on the Arcade or Genesis version. I actually like the gold look of Kano's stage on the Genesis version better than the Arcade and SNES versions. IMO the Genesis Mortal Kombat 1 is the best version, I like it even more than the Arcade version.
For each their own, but genesis it's nothing like you said. Cool, it has the Goro lives screen, but what about the terrible graphics? It's doesn't hand a candle for the Snes and Arcade version. The sound is ugly with this Genesis chiptune sound chip. Get your facts straight. Even the fatalities fail to be faithful to the arcade, the head in the Sub Zero Chiropractors Nightmare fatality, it's facing the camera in the arcade version, but it's placed looking to the sides on Genesis. The spine of the victim is all white with no gradients on Genesis. The Genesis has some redeeming qualities though, when compared to Snes, like the more responsive gameplay and blood, and the cheat menu which is extensive. But it totally pales when compared to the arcade version, and it doesn't even manage to top the Snes version in all aspects.
I had both consoles and I never understood why most of people think blood was so important to decide for one or other version. I even find more accurated the Snes Subzero Fatality, and the violence is still there. Maybe it was laggy (not really that bad), but Mortal Kombat 1 was only about to jump, kick, uppercut and one or two very easy special moves, so I never had the gameplay problems I read here. The only remarcable error was you could punch until beat the oponent at the corner. But the big sprites, full frames animations and quality sound were impressive. I remember I couldnt beleave Snes could be so next to the arcade experience. When I had to choose which one to buy, I didnt doubt it. A similar opossite example is Samurai Showdown, which gameplay was "better" on the dissapointing Snes version, but Genesis version was simply outstanding with all the arcade spirit. Sorry for my english.
SNES : Better colors, neater graphics. More and better quality voices and sound effects. Background music more faithful to the arcade. Megadrive : Bigger screen resolution. Shorter transition time between screens. Better gameplay more faithful to the arcade (blood & gore, combos, physics, characters position...) Original set of some new background music which I think are better than the arcade/SNES ones (but that's a matter of taste).
Who's watching this on 09/13/2018 (the 25th Anniversary of Mortal Monday)? This is all my opinion based... Music = Super Nintendo Sounds & voice-over = Super Nintendo Higher level of violence = Sega Genesis Better controls = Draw (I'll explain) Sure the Super Nintendo lags (it sucks, I know), but you could use the default Super Nintendo controller & a big + is that the PlayStation games (& Arcade accurate ports to PlayStation 2 & PlayStation 3) use the same controller layout. The Sega Genesis version has better responsive controls, but for the full experience, you had to buy a button Sega Genesis controller (I have no clue how much they cost during the prime of the Sega Genesis). Better cheat codes = Sega Genesis by a landslide (thank you DULLARD menu) Misc... Sega Genesis had the Arcade accurate bio & ending artwork which Super Nintendo lacks. Super Nintendo has more Arcade accurate sprites & backgrounds & even has the Arcade accurate Shang Tsung defeat (the souls come out of him) which Sega Genesis lacks. It's tough to decide which version has the better (or easier) Reptile fight. The rules are pretty much the same on both consoles, except no waiting for shadows to fly across the moon in the Super Nintendo version. Getting to Reptile can be a real bitch either way.
For some reason the Sega version bugged me and I had moderate fun with the Super Nes version at limited overalls...However the Megadrive does share it's fair share of secrets like a green glitchy Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade etc. I've never ever fought them myself but I remember seeing images of them via a late 1993 Game Pro magazine issue comparison on how to fight Reptile the easy or hard way and those 2 hidden characters would only appear after fighting Reptile when he flamed out, legitly through 100 matches or something, even got too a point that after facing Reptile on the Genesis version, he somehow appeared when you went back to the verses screen after fighting Reptile?!! He was there over Scorpions mugshot but you couldn't select him or it could've just been a palette swap?!! Never ever know as there were too many conspiracies via MK 1 via game magazines but god they were fun times lolz.....
Genesis : no speech but much better music. The battleplan are more detailed and have more paralax effects, less colors of course, but now, we care less than we did back then. The gameplay feels more like the arcade version, snes version feel sluggish.
And the fatalities, and far superior gameplay overall, I owned both and always reached for the Sega on this one. Though Mortal Kombat II is one of the best SNES there is, while Sega completely dropped the ball🤷
I kind of wished that Midway/Acclaim made an uncensored edition of the original Mortal Kombat game to hype up the release of the second game. Also had anyone tried to hack the SNES version to include the blood/gore and fatalities?
environments are way better on SNES, the characters are almost the same, but on Megadrive the shadow is actually transparent and that's nice, plus it has blood and fatalities so of course it's the best version overall

Have you ever played it? It has a control lag that makes it virtually unplayable. Nice looking but not a good game and definitely not better than the Genesis version.

there's also major differences in background design. the background building in the Palace Gates is bigger in the Genesis version than in the SNES version
@@edstar83 Sound processing on the Genesis was handled by the z80 coprocessor. Which is 8-bit. Yes, there's the FM synth chip, but it's still filtered through the z80, which is why voice samples always sound a bit fuzzy on the Genesis.

Sega actually has more monks than the arcade for some reason the Genesis has four layers of monks the arcade has three and and the SNES about two to one
Sega sold around just as many Genesis/Megadrive consoles and Nintendo did SNES. And Mortal Kombat came out 2 or 3 years after the console release. I doubt everyone who bought a Genesis only bought it to play Mortal Kombat. Today the battle is between Xbox and PS. Back then it was between Nintendo and Sega.
I remember playing this on my friend's Sega and being so disappointed that it was a lot better than the SNES version I had. But then 2 and 3 came out, and both were superior on SNES.
Both versions are bad since these consoles could do better (we have good ports of MK3 & Ultimate on them!), I don't think any of these versions were a definitive port... Maybe the Sega CD version, but I don't know
@@ViniciusOliveira-ny4yt Nah, the Sega CD doesn't really look any better than the cart version, except for some slightly smoother frames of animation. Otherwise it's the same not-quite-right grainy colors and missing background elements. As for the sound, while the restored speech samples are welcome, they totally screwed up the music. Despite having access to the actual arcade audio, they put the wrong pieces on a couple of stages by doubling up on other stage's songs.

undoubtedly better on SNES. Much better graphics, some digitized videos, some voices are wrong on Genesis and quality is also lower, bigger sprites, no need for a code to get the blood... Hell, some backgrounds are even completely missing on Genesis. Flawless victory...

It would be interesting to see some crew remake Mortal Kombat for the SNES with bigger sprites, uncompressed sounds, blood and gore on a 64MB card or larger
the snes has the looks and the sound but it doesnt actually play like mortal kombat, the controls are a bit off, no blood and most fatalities removed and so many bugs, especially in 1 player mode! no doubt someone will take me on about this so i'll name a few of them, (1) repeat 2 or 3 jumps over an opponent in 1 player mode and your opponent will stop and just stand there until you hit them again or the time runs out! (2) when you get too the endurance matches on 1 player, quite often after youve dealt with your 1st opponent the 2nd fighter will jump in and 1 hit kills them! (3) another bug thats in all modes is the throw glitch where some characters actually go under the fighting plain instead of over the head! this is just 3 of many, its obvious the game wasnt ready to be released but they must have known from day 1 the date "mortal monday" had been set so they have to take the blame!
The snes port was basically stopped being made when Nintendo wanted fatalities and blood removed, so midway just stop making it at the beta and released it unfinished and unpolished cuz they knew they weren't going to make there money back on a censored port
A versão do Mega Drive/Genesis é melhor na música, jogabilidade e no sangue. Snes ganha no gráfico com mais detalhes. Particularmente prefiro a versão do Mega!
Had both consoles growing up and had all Mortal Kombats from the first to MK - UMK3 and every time I'd want to play, 9 times out of 10 it was always the SNES port.. I never liked the muddy sounds of the Sega along with the lack of some sfx and voices.. To me growing up the SNES port of Mortal Kombat was always superior to the Sega port in every way..
A jogabilidade é pavorosa.
not true. the sega port missing 80 percent of the sound effects/voices and the frames of animation lost. not to mention playing with only 3 buttons and a d-pad makes the sega port just as bad if not worse. except it wasent censored

If the SNES version would have included the blood and fatalities, it would have done donuts around the Genesis verion like MK2
geekguitars. No it wouldn't because the controls were shit on the SNES version.
@julianaragoniii5725 nintendo knew they messed up and lost the sells on there part and teenagers were pissed at nintendo 😂
Blood vs Sweat....blood wins. SEGA!
I don't understand why almost everyone is saying SNES looks better when Genesis/Mega Drive has more texture details
Finally! Someone else who gets it! _>phew!
Genesis wins. The SNES MK fails on what's really the most important thing in fighters- the control.
O resto...
Love the parallax scrolling on the MD version
SNES.. looks like arcade game.. genesis looks like a 8 bit game..
yea the genesis port was missing lots of frames of animation. which made the game look and play different
Too bad the Genesis version is a better game.
Your English is okay, I understood everything!
Exactly
SNES : Better colors, neater graphics. More and better quality voices and sound effects. Background music more faithful to the arcade.
Megadrive : Bigger screen resolution. Shorter transition time between screens. Better gameplay more faithful to the arcade (blood & gore, combos, physics, characters position...) Original set of some new background music which I think are better than the arcade/SNES ones (but that's a matter of taste).
Very impressive graphics on snes
Who's watching this on 09/13/2018 (the 25th Anniversary of Mortal Monday)?
This is all my opinion based...
Music = Super Nintendo
Sounds & voice-over = Super Nintendo
Higher level of violence = Sega Genesis
Better controls = Draw (I'll explain)
Sure the Super Nintendo lags (it sucks, I know), but you could use the default Super Nintendo controller & a big + is that the PlayStation games (& Arcade accurate ports to PlayStation 2 & PlayStation 3) use the same controller layout.
The Sega Genesis version has better responsive controls, but for the full experience, you had to buy a button Sega Genesis controller (I have no clue how much they cost during the prime of the Sega Genesis).
Better cheat codes = Sega Genesis by a landslide (thank you DULLARD menu)
Misc...
Sega only hope was adding blood
Mega drive sounds better but SNES looks better
Genesis : no speech but much better music. The battleplan are more detailed and have more paralax effects, less colors of course, but now, we care less than we did back then. The gameplay feels more like the arcade version, snes version feel sluggish.
No speech is boring but...
GENESIS IS A LOT BETTER
(With Sega cd version)
@@diogob.m3222 VERDADE. 🤣🤣 O CARA VIAJOU NA MAIONESE. A VERSÃO ARCADE É A MELHOR EM TODOS OS QUESITOS.
Genesis sold more copies up to 5 to 1 to snes bc it showed blood
And the fatalities, and far superior gameplay overall, I owned both and always reached for the Sega on this one.
Though Mortal Kombat II is one of the best SNES there is, while Sega completely dropped the ball🤷
I kind of wished that Midway/Acclaim made an uncensored edition of the original Mortal Kombat game to hype up the release of the second game. Also had anyone tried to hack the SNES version to include the blood/gore and fatalities?
The only hacks I have seen just turned the brown "sweat" to red
environments are way better on SNES, the characters are almost the same, but on Megadrive the shadow is actually transparent and that's nice, plus it has blood and fatalities so of course it's the best version overall
Snes version has better graphics and animations, but it's censored af. Such a crime.
the crime is snes s mortal kombat has lagging controls and input delays that make it unplayable
@@Nobunaga1983 but the genesis version is missing alot of frames of animation. which make it inferior to the arcade port by quite a bit
leeroy jenkins still a couple more standing animation frames can’t save the snes version
@@Nobunaga1983 both ports suck. i played both ports back in 1993. back then just to have those arcade heavy hitters on a home console was amazing.people did not know or talk about frame rates or missing sound effects. times have changed my friend
leeroy jenkins haha I didn’t bring up frames you did. All I said was The input lag and bugs makes the snes version inferior. I was 9 years old when these ports came out. People only talked about bits back then and had no idea what they were
some of the changes are really weird.
And of course the snes censorship really doens't help the comparison.
Of course since this is an arcade game that's also something that is worth asking.
Some of those backgrounds vary so wildly I have no idea which version is more accurate (to the arcade version)
But the lack of gore killed the snes version back in the day...
The SNES port is way more accurate to the arcade in the graphics department, same goes for the sound/music/voice overs.
Snes is better version. More detailed and look like arcade
Have you ever played it? It has a control lag that makes it virtually unplayable. Nice looking but not a good game and definitely not better than the Genesis version.
there's also major differences in background design. the background building in the Palace Gates is bigger in the Genesis version than in the SNES version
sega version my favourite
genesis for everrr
Soundtrack version of megadrive is awesome
Musica de 8 bits jajajaja
I think it's ugly, specially the main theme, ugh

@@edstar83 Sound processing on the Genesis was handled by the z80 coprocessor. Which is 8-bit. Yes, there's the FM synth chip, but it's still filtered through the z80, which is why voice samples always sound a bit fuzzy on the Genesis.
if it wasnt the violence being a new thing at the time and if sculptured software put more time into it might of been an arcade perfect port, in example the second game got a way better port ,i would even say sculptured software made a perfect job at it, and probe just did even try
SNES easily.
Megadrive version should have been better. Although I did like it's intro theme more than SNES.
SEGA wins. FATALITY! The game gear version was really good for a handheld at the time too. Played them both so much.
I never understood why the monks were cut in half on sega, always didn’t look right to me.
Sega actually has more monks than the arcade for some reason the Genesis has four layers of monks the arcade has three and and the SNES about two to one
Or are you talking about the sprite size?
@@llamaninja3393 im talking about how the monks are group together, they look cut in half.

Funny how Sega used the uncensored version of Mortal Kombat to sell their systems.
Graphics and sound effects are way better on the SNES, gameplay and blood on Genesis make it the definite arcade port though.
@@davezanko9051 This is totally unacceptable; seeing how they had all those resources available for them to work on, plus all the data storage space they could ever need on a CD-ROM...
who cares if the snes looked better?it played so terribly.
And it's not like the Genesis version looked that bad. At least back then you could tell the difference between Genesis games and Snes games. Today you can't tell the difference between a game on Xbox one or PS4
Gráficos, sons e falas excelentes no SNES, somente sangue e fatalitys preservados no Sega Genesis, jogabilidade também, nessa deu empate galera!!!
Errado, jogabilidade no SNES é horrível.
The ice ball effects even better on the Sega Genesis
undoubtedly better on SNES. Much better graphics, some digitized videos, some voices are wrong on Genesis and quality is also lower, bigger sprites, no need for a code to get the blood... Hell, some backgrounds are even completely missing on Genesis. Flawless victory...
+tetsuokenpachi Graphics looks better on SNES. But lack of fatalities and blood takes hell of appeal from it. Because if You lived back then You should know that what made MK were fatalities and blood
+Venra
To be honest, I hate Mortal Kombat but yes, even the Sega Master System version has the fatalities if I remember well but I wouldn't play the Master System version just because it has them... They fixed that with MK2 though.
tetsuokenpachi Not to be mistaken, I don't like MK prefer Street Fighter. But blood and fatalities were it's main draw
+Venra
King of Fighters, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown... When it comes to fighting games, SNK is my jam.
tetsuokenpachi Also love those. I play SNK fighters since KoF 94. My favourite are KoF 98, KoF XI on PS2, Garou, Last Blade 2, Samurai Shodown 2, Real Bout, AoF 3. Can't wait for KoF XIV. Don't have PS4 yet but after Kof release must think about it
Genesis version is much more like the arcade for me, so it's my favorite.
It would be interesting to see some crew remake Mortal Kombat for the SNES with bigger sprites, uncompressed sounds, blood and gore on a 64MB card or larger
I play both and both are great
The sound was amazing on the genesis.
When Sub Zero freezes on the Sega, the other guy shakes for a second. That detail is missing on the SNES.
the snes has the looks and the sound but it doesnt actually play like mortal kombat, the controls are a bit off, no blood and most fatalities removed and so many bugs, especially in 1 player mode! no doubt someone will take me on about this so i'll name a few of them, (1) repeat 2 or 3 jumps over an opponent in 1 player mode and your opponent will stop and just stand there until you hit them again or the time runs out! (2)
when you get too the endurance matches on 1 player, quite often after youve dealt with your 1st opponent the 2nd fighter will jump in and 1 hit kills them!
Snes wins with better colors, graphics, music and sfx than genesis
SNES better only on pics, MegaDrive wins all around
Had both consoles growing up and had all Mortal Kombats from the first to MK - UMK3 and every time I'd want to play, 9 times out of 10 it was always the SNES port.. I never liked the muddy sounds of the Sega along with the lack of some sfx and voices.. To me growing up the SNES port of Mortal Kombat was always superior to the Sega port in every way..
A jogabilidade é pavorosa.
Megadrive better sound + blood
Snes = cleaner quality + announcing who won sound wise
Sega version's gameplay was more close to arcade. SNES gameplay was simply shit. Everything else compared didn't even matter at that point.
not true. the sega port missing 80 percent of the sound effects/voices and the frames of animation lost. not to mention playing with only 3 buttons and a d-pad makes the sega port just as bad if not worse. except it wasent censored
I liked the genesis version better to me it had different music than the arcade but in my opinion it was a better choice so to me it felt like it was made better it had it's own style for the genesis
Mortal Kombat 1 + 4Kids = MK1 on SNES.
Don't know why you didn't show sub-zeros finisher on the SNES side. Its literally the same as genesis and arcade: forward down forward high punch. Granted he just freezes and breaks him but still. This comparison feels biased to me.
