I agree and I simply cannot ever accept the new Frieza. Bring back the Snake-like voice! Also, I had the HARDEST time accepting the raspy Krillin voice after the Ocean dubs. I can't think of any other series with more drastic cast changes than DBZ.

Tbh the only thing that looks worrying about it is the lack of splitscreen on all the maps. That is a bit of a nitpick tho, and everything else looks sick
One thing of note regarding the staggered releases is that, with the European Wii version of the game coming out so late, they had time to fix a _lot_ of bugs from the other versions (such as Baby Vegeta & Metal Cooler's energy balls super being inaccurate when they should be 100% accurate instead, same with Super Buu's Genocide of Mankind and Majuub's ultimate failing to hit anything when they should have nearly perfect tracking on top of perfect accuracy, among a lot of other things), making it the version that is currently used for competitive play.
Something I love about the story mode in this game is if you defeat enemies like Android 19 or Nappa with characters who didn't best them in the anime then you get new cutscenes and can even fight Gero if Goku beats 19. That adds some replay ability in my opinion
That opening line from Goku doing the dragon fist has stuck with me my entire life. Whenever I'm considering not doing an act of selflessness, like protecting someone in trouble even if it's not my business, or even something as minor and simple as picking up a disgusting bag of old fastfood or a wet plastic cup some asshole left lying around, I think to myself, "If I don't, who will?" And it's euphoric hearing that after all these years because I've forgotten where I got that line from.
I love the deftones reference. I literally found that a couple of months ago, and it killed me off. It was a nice reminder of the pure gold that is that scene. 😂
Yeah I remember how it made sense to play as the villain at certain points. It’s weird in games where you fight the villain, win, but you still lose in the story.
The game does have stage destruction/transition. You need to hit an enemy with specific attacks while they're on the ground, and they have to survive the attack.
Great review as always. 2 highly underrated improvements that this game added that I wish you’d brought up: 1. Characters that previously had more generic movesets finally get unique ones. 2. Finally getting to play as the villains in battles where it makes sense.
Good review. 1 correction though, 7:50 you can control which dragon you get by collecting your dragon balls on specific stages. Earth maps=Shenron, Namek=Porunga. Ultimate (red) Shenron is only summoned by acquiring dragon ball in the GT saga. If you mix up your stages you run the risk of RNG with your last ball collected having a higher chance of dictating which dragon is summoned. If you are save scumming for a specific dragon after collecting multiple balls from different locations or getting them from tournament mode your save needs to be before the last ball is collected. Once you have it your dragon is decided.
Haha not true…I have all 7 by means of the last mission Trunks vs Cell in android saga on Earth….and I have gotten Ultimate many times always going for Z points….if i don’t see ultimate I reset game and try again😁
@@geomejia8946 Yes, this is true. @spiritteddy9393 is mistaken. The Trunks/Cell dragon ball collecting strat is what I did as well, and you just get a random dragon every time. Reset and you can get the same one or a different one!
I remember that I played this game so much that I had already created a method to summon the dragon I wanted. I remember that I had to enter and exit certain game modes.
Great video! Love the cameo from Hidden. This whole series was great to watch leading up to the new game! Edit: just to clarify, there *are* stage transitions for destroyed versions of earth and namek, but it's for more destructive supers that are aimed at the ground. They're not hard to pull off, but I can see how you can go a whole playthrough never seeing it.
Yeah, I think it's particularly tied to the attack landing all hits if it doesn't cutaway to a specific animation, as missing and hitting the ground no longer destroys planets compared to BT2. There's also lots of game modes that turn map destruction off like tournaments, survival, mission 100, dragon sim, the story mode... Yeah, no, basically you need to fight a CPU for fun in a duel instead. Then plenty of "strong" ultimates like final flash or Goku (mid)'s spirit bomb will do it.
Great video man! This game was my childhood, I spent so many hours playing it and unlocking everything, but it's still so interesting to watch a retrospective like this, from someone with a fresh perspective. Good job!
Super glad to be here. Finally, the best game of the franchise (all things considered) I really love this game so much and I think I'm one of the few people who played literally every feature in the game (yes including the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 1 & 2 Disc fusions)
I never figured out how you were supposed to unlock Fasha- decision& teally likwd her. Probably the best entry for me excluding Fighterz & Xenoverse. Chi-Chi’s bio commentaries are fun. 😂
I miss these times. So many hours of role playing in a game that didn't let you do that. Your imagination as a kid is truly wonderful. It didn't even need great graphics (compared to todays standard)
As someone who’s never experienced bt3 (or any bt game for that matter) I’m really excited for sparking zero so I can have the same feeling that y’all felt in the mid 2000’s.
The one thing your rating is missing is an intro cinematic/music rating. For some reason I always placed a lot of importance on how good the intro was for these games, of which, for me Budokai 3's Japanese (and I think Europe since I remember the version with the lyrics) intro is still the best. Both music and cinematic. Great video though and I completely agree that Tenkaichi Budokai 3 is up there as one of, if not the best Dragon Ball games out there. Though personally I still prefer the side-on combat style of Budokai 3/Infinite World. Plus there's also Sparking Zero now which I've only played a bit of the story so far, but what I have played has been by far and away the best story experience of any of the DB games to date, aside from MAYBE Kakarot, though I think SZ has it beat with the phenomenal what-if stories they included.
I grew up on this game and I was probably one of the best players here been so many years but my muscle memory are still there lol I never played any dbz games after bt3 but I bought the standard sparking zero pre order I'm excited to hop on tomorrow with my bro

Ultimate battle 22 for ps1 is another solid entry. The combat is similar to old school street fighter/kof with the inputs. Found the codes to unlock secret characters a neat feature as well.
you 100% can choose what dragon will appear, all you need to do is go into any menu and back out, you will summoned the dragon based on the background of that menu
Tenkaichi 3 actually only adds the Red Shenron from GT, in 2 if you have the dragon balls and are in a namek chapter you can summon Porunga instead. Ah yes the Nappa fight, honestly I don't think I've ever gone past Tien or Chiaotzu in that fight always kill Nappa with one of those 2, Chiaotzu especially feels really satisfying
This game was the shit growing up. So much fun with my best friend. Found out last year there's even a mod for it, that let's yah basically do Super era content
i remember when this was released. my dad gave me money if i got good grades in school ($20 an A, $5 a B) and the ps3 had been out about a year at that point. i told him i really wanted this game and he gave me a choice, get this game or get a ps3. i chose this game. mainly because i'm a huge dragon ball fan and the ps3 hadn't been out that long yet so there wasn't any games that peaked my interest. plus the ps3 was reportedly having heating issues. i got a ps3 the next year for christmas. he still pokes fun at me for choosing a game over a ps3 but i still don't regret it.
Amazing video, Evan! I'm really glad you loved the game even without the nostalgia. I appreciated getting such a fresh take on a long-time favorite of mine (and don't worry, we thought the weird time-based tournament selection and Sim Dragon were bad even back when it came out lmao). I'm excited to play Sparking Zero right alongside you and hear what you think of it. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go watch all your other retrospectives on other games
This game is the quintessential Gen 6 game. Bursting with content and just super fun. Too bad they removed so much in terms of story mode. But having ChiChi as the commentator is simply amazing.
map transitions are way too hard to do. if i remember correctly, only certain super moves can do it, you have to hit the oponent whilst they are on the ground, the move cannot kill them but has to leave them within a certain low health threshold.
"no reason to replay" huh. I vividly remember the game having alternative stories within a battle if you beat it in certain ways. I spent ages figuring out what changed what as a kid.
you have to keep in mind. When this game came out. games were all we had to revisit story. Its overlooked because today ypu can see it wherever. Story was more important imo back then
The only flaw i see in this game is cutting the Gotenks and Gohan fights during the buu saga, and no Androids fights either aside 19? What a bizarre decision.
Bro I can play BT2 on the hardest difficulty and going from that to 3 everytime is a reality check. The A.I on this game might be the hardest I have played on any DBZ game on the mid difficulty. They block everything and as frustrating as it is the game is still so fun bro. Nothing like BT3
As someone who was old enough to play these games on release. I'll say the reason I feel BT3 is the not only the best DBZ game but one of the best fighting games of all time. Is because of that tag team mode. You had more Individual battles in BT2 but the tag team made the game feel more like the show. I still wish you could have AI or friends play as the other characters at the same time. Instead of tag team. But that may be more chaotic than fun ti actually play
More people complaining about DB Sparking Zero's story being short need to come back and rewatch this Budokai & Budokai Tenkaichi retrospective ya have. I get we wanted to relive the anime through Zero, but when they go about comparing specifically this game with Zero they're completely wrong. Because it's fundamentally the very same game minus the obvious. Which is fine, because memories have always been unreliable when it comes to things we played/experienced decades ago. And if we did get the BT2 treatment with Zero...I have a feeling the exhaustion of that would have been amplified ever more with the inclusion of Super lol But hey, maybe DLC will flesh that out even more with story, maps, and characters. Or, maybe the following game after Zero? That's wishful thinking though that only time will tell lol Great video though, I recently played through Budokai - Budokai Tenkaichi 3 myself and your thoughts mostly matched up with mine throughout the retrospective series. We were blessed to grow up with this era of DB games....I probably would have given up hope for the series being a proper fighting game if I had played the older ones before Budokai....almost did give up with Sagas cause that one was....a mess to put lightly xD
Tenkaichi 3 was my favorite DBZ game of my youth, and I didn't find one I liked better until DBZ: Kakarot came out. To be honest, even though I know its probably objectively better, the Xenoverse games never recaptured the joy I felt from Tenkaichi.
Facts kakarot was pretty tough and I didn’t like xenoverse either. But I preordered sparking zero. As long as it’s like bt3 just hella updated it will fire
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking! Meteor is the best Dragon Ball fighting game ever. One of my favorite Dragon Ball Z videogames of all time.
well probably got told this already but im pretty sure map transitions are impossible in training mode and i think for it too happen you need an move usually an ultimate that is connecting the ground when hitting the enemy that those not put you into an animation so even if you hit goku ends super spirit bomb it would likely not work since it goes into an cutscreen but goku mids spirit bomb should work and tournements in free mode gives you no rewards difficulty i think affects how good evolution Z items characters get in some of the tornements like otherworld tournement
I have old horrible quality dbz BT3 replays on my channel from years ago. That’s how much love I have for this game. If there’s one question I could ask at the end of my life, I would love to know how many hours I have in BT3! I hope Sparking zero lives up to the hype!
Also the attacks, ki and energy blast look so much better in this game, that's a huge plus, on BT2 they looked bad, everything was just a laser looking blast.
It's not a full cover, it's just the first part of the chorus drafted up by a friend of mine with my vocals layered on top of it. We just did that one part of the song for this bit in my Tenkaichi 1 and 3 videos.
I cannot believe I COMPLETELY erased this Era of gaming from my memory Now it’s all flooding back… on the Wii when I was like 9-10-11 years old Always used Goku no matter what bro was my hero back then Is there any way I can play this again ??
I disagree on the R3 button prompts lowering replay value. First because you can beat every stage without pressing R3 once. Second because using some R3 prompts will unlock special alternate endings to certain fights, adding more content and additional challenge for you in several of the Dragon History fights. If anything it ADDS more replay value. That disagreement aside, the video itself was as good as your previous takes.
Everything good that you said about this game and praised it for was all included, done, and done better, going further above and beyond what this game could even imagine with Xenoverse 2. The Xenoverse series, imo is the TRUE sequel, evolution, and successor to this game and series in every way. I loved this game and it was great for it's time. But Xenoverse 2 is ridiculously far superior in every way, and supplants and replaces this game in every way that you would ever want to come to a Dragon Ball game for. BT3 is great, I have nostalgic memories of it, but because Xenoverse 2 exists, there is never any reason to ever come back to this game.
BT3 at that time was able to bring all characters from all series available at that time.. sure, there have been so many things that got added between then and now, but i dont think any DBZ game will cover all like what BT3 did at that time. Base game having EVERYTHING from get go. Sparking Zero can get everything with DLC but ye, DLC. It will never be the game that gave everything when it launched.. but hey, BT returning is dream come true anyway
Budokai 3 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 should be required experiences for every dragonball fan. Thanks for the video. My only criticism of the game is the lack of what-if characters, and also that the what-if scenarios were the lamest I've ever seen. No one in the multiverse has ever wondered what would happen if Devilman fought Frieza and King Cold.
28:44 the msive explotions arent gone you can do it. you just need a big freaking boom:) normally i use gogeta ss4 big bang kameha and that does it you can go from a green place to a broken planet.... but i think you already knew that you just wanted to see if anyone watches your vids all the way through .. well hi there i do :)
I actually disagree about the lack of agency in dragon history. Anytime there's an r3 prompt on screen is a chance to change the story and receive a different ending by finishing the fight either at an ealier point than in the manga/anime or winning the fight with a different character altogether.
40 minutes?? I'm 'bout to FEAST
You could play The Game until you're satisfied
Can’t even calculate how many hours I spent role playing DBZ fights in this game. Complete classic.

Intro, music, the challenges mode with the Androids' voicelines. Or the characters' descriptions. Great great stuff.
For map destruction you must use a ultimate move and deal more than 20,000 damage with the opponent surviving.

This is the correct way to play games. 🤝
Legendary line from the legendary DBZ films and DBZBT3
4:05 I thought I was going crazy for a second when you repeat yourself.
One thing I love about these videos is how you always analyze the various box arts of the games you review.
Messed this one up though since i was wrong about the EU cover. It will be fixed in the compilation video.
I love the deftones reference. I literally found that a couple of months ago, and it killed me off. It was a nice reminder of the pure gold that is that scene. 😂
At around 4 minutes you did a second take of the same line and left both in. Made me raise an eyebrow but it was kind of funny.
I just rewinded that part lmfao I thought I was trippin
Yeah I remember how it made sense to play as the villain at certain points. It’s weird in games where you fight the villain, win, but you still lose in the story.
BT3 was an homeage through and through. With a bonus you can play with your friends at eachother homes
The game does have stage destruction/transition. You need to hit an enemy with specific attacks while they're on the ground, and they have to survive the attack.
Great review as always.
2 highly underrated improvements that this game added that I wish you’d brought up:
1. Characters that previously had more generic movesets finally get unique ones.
2. Finally getting to play as the villains in battles where it makes sense.
Been waiting on this one since finding your first two videos!!
The Wii version of these games will always have my heart. They’re so fun!
It's been quite a journey, but we are indeed finally here. Thank you for making your videos!
We're not done yet... Infinite World video on the way.
It’s crazy when you think about it gogeta and broly really fought years later
Tenkaichi series needs and HD collection the PS2 version is over $200.
Emulation for the win
@Games-px3dl Indeed. I am happy to still own my copy.
I remb buying this game and it came with a dvd showing all the best fights from shows and movies.
Great video man! This game was my childhood, I spent so many hours playing it and unlocking everything, but it's still so interesting to watch a retrospective like this, from someone with a fresh perspective. Good job!
Super glad to be here. Finally, the best game of the franchise (all things considered)
I really love this game so much and I think I'm one of the few people who played literally every feature in the game (yes including the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 1 & 2 Disc fusions)
It didn't even need great graphics (compared to todays standard)
damn! Hidden and Evan Prince back to back
And both in the same videos!
I grew up on this game and I was probably one of the best players here been so many years but my muscle memory are still there lol
I never played any dbz games after bt3 but I bought the standard sparking zero pre order I'm excited to hop on tomorrow with my bro
Another awesome retrospective as always my dude!!
Despite all the DBZ games that have come out over the years, BT1 has the most badass and authentic Intro of all of DBZ games of the Franchise. BT2 and BT3 in my opinion still remains the most Unique and the best DBZ games in terms of content, quality and fanservices. And from the gameplay perspective aspects, these DBZ games that I mentioned are very close to the anime itself because of the Vibe and Charm, I don't know how to describe it but it was, and still is the most Unique DBZ experience you could have with the combat factor. (- Sheer amount de of characters
- Transformations mid-battle (powering up and down)
- Fusions mid-battle
- Fast gameplay that has that "woah" feel
- Tons of extra content
- Story mode covering all sagas + movies
- What If sagas
- Shenron having permanent impact on game (character unlocks and whatnot)
- Great tournaments that rotate availability
- Edit characters with items (buffs)
- 5v5 battles
- Really Great and Epic Soundtracks
- Destroyable environments
- Entire stages could be blown up into their "destroyed" alternatives
- Mission 100 being a great challenge
- Artwork is 10/10
- Sound effects are great
- Combat feels heavy and satisfying) Only Budokai 3, Infinite World and the Raging Blast 1 and 2 and all of PSP DBZ games except of Dragon Ball Z Evolution are still considered also very solid DBZ games, also the hidden gem that a lot of DBZ fans missed from PS2 Era of DBZ games is "Super Dragon Ball Z" which is also a real Unique and DBZ game, especially for the different gameplay aspects perspective.
Ultimate battle 22 for ps1 is another solid entry. The combat is similar to old school street fighter/kof with the inputs. Found the codes to unlock secret characters a neat feature as well.
Bro your probably on your own on that 😅😂 22 is seen as one of the worst games ofall time@@ThatGuy-en2nn
you 100% can choose what dragon will appear, all you need to do is go into any menu and back out, you will summoned the dragon based on the background of that menu
Tenkaichi 3 actually only adds the Red Shenron from GT, in 2 if you have the dragon balls and are in a namek chapter you can summon Porunga instead.
Ah yes the Nappa fight, honestly I don't think I've ever gone past Tien or Chiaotzu in that fight always kill Nappa with one of those 2, Chiaotzu especially feels really satisfying
these have been a fun watch as a huge fan of the BT series. good work!
That's what I love to hear!
This game is the quintessential Gen 6 game. Bursting with content and just super fun. Too bad they removed so much in terms of story mode. But having ChiChi as the commentator is simply amazing.
Wow how did i miss this game
map transitions are way too hard to do. if i remember correctly, only certain super moves can do it, you have to hit the oponent whilst they are on the ground, the move cannot kill them but has to leave them within a certain low health threshold.
"no reason to replay" huh. I vividly remember the game having alternative stories within a battle if you beat it in certain ways. I spent ages figuring out what changed what as a kid.
future trunks vs future cell = best dragonball hunting stage
you have to keep in mind. When this game came out. games were all we had to revisit story. Its overlooked because today ypu can see it wherever. Story was more important imo back then
Been looking forward to this one!
One of my childhood favorites. thank you for making this video
27:40 you could do this in the first two DBZ BT games as well 😊
The only flaw i see in this game is cutting the Gotenks and Gohan fights during the buu saga, and no Androids fights either aside 19? What a bizarre decision.
Hidden and Evan Prince Crossover was not on my 2024 Bingo Card
non scripted map destruction only happens in duel mode
Was waiting for this one ! :D
The European cover is actually the one with Goku on the right hand size with an effect added to him, FYI.
Love ur content man , keep it up . Just wanted to say that
Thanks so much man! Hope to see you on future videos!
That's wishful thinking though that only time will tell lol
Great video though, I recently played through Budokai - Budokai Tenkaichi 3 myself and your thoughts mostly matched up with mine throughout the retrospective series. We were blessed to grow up with this era of DB games....I probably would have given up hope for the series being a proper fighting game if I had played the older ones before Budokai....almost did give up with Sagas cause that one was....a mess to put lightly xD
I’ve been waiting for this entry
Finally 🔥🔥🔥 Loved this game on the WII doing kamehameha IRL
I'm inspired. When I make one, I'll find someway to get it to you!
Try dbz fighters
@MrCovi2955 You should try fighter z
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking! Meteor is the best Dragon Ball fighting game ever. One of my favorite Dragon Ball Z videogames of all time.
You do know Porunga was in Budokai Tenkaichi 2 also you get the dragon ball and summon him on a Planet Namek saga
Gotta love that Hidden Gem 💎
I see what you did there.
well probably got told this already but im pretty sure map transitions are impossible in training mode and i think for it too happen you need an move usually an ultimate that is connecting the ground when hitting the enemy that those not put you into an animation so even if you hit goku ends super spirit bomb it would likely not work since it goes into an cutscreen but goku mids spirit bomb should work
and tournements in free mode gives you no rewards difficulty i think affects how good evolution Z items characters get in some of the tornements like otherworld tournement
I have old horrible quality dbz BT3 replays on my channel from years ago.
That’s how much love I have for this game. If there’s one question I could ask at the end of my life, I would love to know how many hours I have in BT3!
I hope Sparking zero lives up to the hype!
YOOO I LOVE HIDDEN❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love the Wii port. It just feels fast AF
We thought it was the end, but now we have BT4, or Sparking Zero. My only gripe about the video, otherwise good stuff!
Tenkaichi 2 was NOT just a bigger version of 1. There are probably more differences between those 2 games than there are between 2 and 3 😂
Yeah that was an absurd statement. If anything 3 is just a bigger version of 2.
Also the attacks, ki and energy blast look so much better in this game, that's a huge plus, on BT2 they looked bad, everything was just a laser looking blast.
4:29 Please you gotta tell me what cover of deftones change you used the guitar is the version you have is wicked.
It's not a full cover, it's just the first part of the chorus drafted up by a friend of mine with my vocals layered on top of it. We just did that one part of the song for this bit in my Tenkaichi 1 and 3 videos.
Gonna do a video on infinite world to cap off the ps2 Era of db games?
That's exactly what I'm gonna do.
Another video from the KING 🤴
Hm... these retrospective videos from you and Hidden serves as a nice countdown towards Sparking Zero. Gonna do Raging Blast or Tenkaichi Tag Team?
Great video as always. Are you planning on reviewing the Tenkaichi 4 Mod and its changes?
Not as of now, but it would be cool in the future.
I love this Dragon Ball Z game!
Hey are you gonna ever cover the raging blast series????
Great video. Can you do Raging Blast 1 and 2 please
my childhood :)
I cannot believe I COMPLETELY erased this Era of gaming from my memory
Now it’s all flooding back… on the Wii when I was like 9-10-11 years old
Always used Goku no matter what bro was my hero back then
Is there any way I can play this again ??
Rip Akira Toriyama
Love from Brasil
You made a slight typo in the description, it's the Sony PlayStation 2 not 1 👀
Corrected thanks for pointing it out!
Please cover the Dragon Ball Tenkaichi 4 mod. It's amazing :D
You could summon porunga in bt2 as well, if you used the dragon balls while in planet namek on dragon universe
He did it❤
BT3 at that time was able to bring all characters from all series available at that time.. sure, there have been so many things that got added between then and now, but i dont think any DBZ game will cover all like what BT3 did at that time. Base game having EVERYTHING from get go. Sparking Zero can get everything with DLC but ye, DLC. It will never be the game that gave everything when it launched.. but hey, BT returning is dream come true anyway
3:59 all i will say
other than this good video
Budokai 3 and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 should be required experiences for every dragonball fan. Thanks for the video. My only criticism of the game is the lack of what-if characters, and also that the what-if scenarios were the lamest I've ever seen. No one in the multiverse has ever wondered what would happen if Devilman fought Frieza and King Cold.
Mr Evan will you do the raging blast series it's like the sparking series but on ps3 instead of 2
This game on the Wii is the greatest fighting game ever
28:44 the msive explotions arent gone you can do it. you just need a big freaking boom:) normally i use gogeta ss4 big bang kameha and that does it you can go from a green place to a broken planet.... but i think you already knew that you just wanted to see if anyone watches your vids all the way through .. well hi there i do :)
I actually disagree about the lack of agency in dragon history. Anytime there's an r3 prompt on screen is a chance to change the story and receive a different ending by finishing the fight either at an ealier point than in the manga/anime or winning the fight with a different character altogether.
@3:58 & @4:06 uuuuh whoops 🤭
The best game ever made
