  • 140! NOT 160!! SORRY!
    Simple, sweet, and delicious! Was taught by one of my students and I just have to pass it on!
    Note: most people recommend seating the oven at 160 degrees Celsius which is why I probably did it in this video, and why it's totally fine so I didn't reshoot it, but ACTUALLY I SET IT TO 140!!
    Method Summary:
    1) Get Japanese satsumaimo (or any other sweet potato).
    2) Wash the outside. (I usually use the same cloth I use to wash dishes, but a soft brush works if you have one).
    3) Preheat an oven to 140 degrees Celsius (284 F).
    4) Wrap the potatoes in tin foil.
    5) Bake in the oven for 90 minutes.

    Nice video. I love Japanese sweet potatoes. My grandma was Japanese and she used to bake them and eat them as a snack.

    I just usually wrap it and wax paper but first I stabbed the potato several times and cook it for like 9 minutes if it's a really big one and it usually comes out perfect in the microwave but you know about 67 minutes and I'll check it and feel of it. I love these potatoes

      Great idea! I've done that too. The reason for cooking it for a long time at low heat is to break down the sugars. They get really sweet that way.

      Every time I try to boil them they take way longer to get cooked they probably take up to 5 hours idk why

    • @brentinjapan
      @brentinjapan  Год назад +2

      That’s definitely the way most Japanese do it. Cut into pieces and they’ll boil faster.
      For me, cooking a long time at low temperature makes them sweeter and professional sweet potato makers in Japan (yes they exist) cook them that way.

      You don't need foil! Bake without it or boil them. Foil is aluminum. The aluminum seeps into your food as it bakes. You're poisoning your body.

    “20 grams of carb, if your on a low carb diet, you’re not having these” did you mean you ARE having these?

    • @brentinjapan

      Haha. Interesting point! I guess we have to talk about what low carb means. I should have said that if you’re on a NO carb diet you’re not having these, just to be safe. These potatoes are among the healthiest carbs.

      All of my life in Canada until moving to Japan I think I never saw these. The northern States are probably the same. In the south I'm sure they have them - they have a long yam eating tradition. We had yams in Canada sometimes. You can cook yams the same way.

      Two questions… you say 140 Celsius in the comments but 160 C in the video. Which is better?
      Also: no need to poke holes with a fork before? Some sites say to do that but you seem to imply it’s not needed.
      Thanks!

    • @brentinjapan
      @brentinjapan  2 года назад

      No. Sweet potatoes have fewer calories, fewer carbs, and WAY more vitamin A than normal potatoes. Both are good if you don’t eat too much. Regular potatoes have more protein but better to get protein elsewhere. When I’m on a diet I never eat white potatoes.

    Ok good video. Incidentally, does your Creator treat you the same way you treat Him? Now, THAT part was not appreciated, at least by yours truly. And I am yours truly. And He is to whomever sees their need of Him. 😁
