I cook them whole (skin pierced) at 400 F for 45-60 minutes, depending on size. The high heat breaks down the tough fibers, so the interiors are as smooth and creamy as a soufflé.
So you said sweet potatoes can last notoriously ( complete malapropism) long, then you go on to say they only last a month, well that's BS. its another amazing food item, sweet potatoes can be traced back to 750bc in Peru, but it takes modern day Americans to tell us and the rest of the world how were storing, preping, cooking and eating them wrong. Yes my father would grow sweet potatoes on our homestead and to keep them in the back of home at the beginning of the rows of garden he would dig holes and put the sweet potatoes in the holes, cover with pine straw and then cover dirt on top of that. My two cents to speeding up the cooking process: Poke a few times with a fork, pop in the microwave for a couple of min. (depending on the size) before cooking in the oven. Cuts the cooking time in half and doesn’t effect the flavor! 😁😁

I make sure they look clean and buy the ones that seem heavy for their size. Don't oil, salt, pierce or wrap them. Bake at 350-400 until soft. Skin peels off easily. Taste very sweet and creamy, even without butter.
I actually boil, bake or microwave mine, add butter, salt and when they are done I can literally eat the skin along with the yummy sweet potato. ( Washing and cutting off the inedible parts)😋🍠
I learned this from a NY Times article. Freeze the sweets for about 45 minutes, then bake at 375 until the skin gets paper-y. Don't poke holes ! The ice crystals will melt, creating steam inside the potato. Soft, fluffy, the best texture. 👍🏻
I have sweet potatoes for breakfast every morning. I peal off their skin with a knife and then wash them before I put them in the rice cooker. It just takes around 20 minutes to boil them thoroughly in it. Easy and simple. As a big fan of cheese, I like to put a slice of cheese on top of sweet potatoes before eating. The sweet potatoes melts the cheese in the same way as the burger does it. What a delicious and healthy meal!
I have boiling or microwaving them for the past couple of weeks as a night snack and got absolutely hooked. Last night i bought 2 kilos of some thin and long sweet potatoes with white yellowish inside. I microwaved them as usual and they were dry and awful

It's so simple to bake them.Just wash them and dry them well, coat and rub the skins with a layer of canola or preferably vegetable oil (don't overdo it!) And very good for digestion.I give my dogs sweet potato when they have issue with their stomach .
You aren't lying about too much sugar. I love sweet potatoes baked plain, and just with butter. I eat it like a baked potato and eat the skin. Sweet potato casserole is horrible. Usually canned sweet potatoes are used, which already have had sugar added, then lots of sugar added to that. It's not a vegetable at that point, it's a dessert, like pudding.
I just ate sweet pots cooked in air fryer and they were delicious. Almost like a dessert. I cant imagine adding sugar. Just a little salt and ghee. I am so amazed at the air fryer we have. It has opened up our dinners to food i never cooked before. Amazing device.

Usually I like them roasted, so today I'm going to try my new toaster oven. We'll see how it works. Worked ok on regular potatoes, and a few days ago I used it to roast a whole lot of those little tiny potatoes. Yum. On to my experiment. They are the "Japanese" sweet potatoes, and kind of plump. Here goes!
"Baking sweet potatoes can also cause an 80% drop in vitamin A levels, twice as much as boiling. Therefore, from a nutritional standpoint, boiling rather than baking should be recommended for cooking sweet potato."
My favorite way to cook sweet potatoes is roasted. Peeled and cut into quarters, add butter, slight sprinkle of sugar, salt and pepper. My “auntie” Gwen (Not a blood relative, but definitely family) made them that way.

I love leftover sweet potatoes. I melt Blue Bonnet margarine & brown sugar in a frying pan & slice cooked sweet potatoes about 1/4 inch thick in it. Turn them over a few times & Very lightly brown them. I've just started warming slices of ham in the pan also. They are sweet & delicious.
One large sweet potato .. wash well, pierce well, microwave directly on turntable 9 min +/_ depending on microwave and size of potato, split and serve with butter or other quality fat in order to get full benefit of fat-soluble vitamins, and perhaps a little black pepper for added flavor and to aid digestion. Consume entire potato with skin for greatest nutritional benefit. (same with white baked potato). Two people may share one large potato while a second potato cooks. I have never tried cooking more than one large potato at a time in microwave; but two small to medium might work just fine. As for running regular oven for potato, I would only consider when using oven for something else at same time, such as meatloaf or chicken. I never used to eat the sweet potato skin but, after learning so much nutrition is LOST by not eating skin, I learned to eat potato skin and love it and since would not dream of wasting so much as a bite :)
I think it's like "what is the difference between a carrot and a radish?" They are completely different plants with different characteristics. You can look it up for more detailed info.
In the U.S., none, unless you're visiting a specialty market that has true yams. What is commonly sold as a yam in the U.S. is actually just an orange sweet potato. If you do find some true yams, you are unlikely to mistake them for sweet potatoes, as they have a brown bark-like skin on them, usually have white flesh (though there are other colors), aren't the same shape, and are usually larger in size.
Back years ago, when you baked a sweet potato some of the sweet juice would actually run out of the potato. The potato was actually sweet! The ones today are a far cry from the old varities. You have to add butter, cinnamon, sugar or whatever to liven the up a bit. Todays commercially grown vegetables pretty much suck. Problem is that most folks who grew up without a gardening background in these later years don't realize what has been lost in the new plant varites. Most of what were bred for longer shelf life or resistance to insects and so on. Flavor was not a priority.
I've been peeling them after boiling, but I probably should leave the skins on next time. Thanks! I only use Okinawan purple potatoes (from Dan Buettner's Live to 100).
I did that for years until I decided to put one into a pyrex bread pan with a small piece of parchment underneath 375 for about 1-1/2 hr. I do prick the skin. Try it. Works EVERY time.
Sweet potatoes shouldn't spoil as fast as described in this video. I grow them in my garden, and they keep for several months to a year at room temperature, though they do gradually become lighter as they begin to dry out towards the end of that period.
I make sweet potatoes for the family at Thanksgiving & Christmas. After I boil the sweet potatoes I start to peel them and there are a bunch of strings in the sweet potatos that I have to pull out. I can’t keep up with all the strings. I mash the sweet potatoes with the potato masher and it takes out some of the strings but not all. What is causing all the strings in the sweet potatoes???
The 2 main reasons for this tend to be 1.) These "strings" can come from growing a potato in soil that is too fertile. The potato is a root and roots store nutrients. Grown in soil that is too fertile, sweet potato vines will grow fast and big and the result is long stringy potatoes). 2.) Sweet potatoes stored at temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit will shrivel and become dry and stringy. Sweet potatoes may develop an off-flavor and the flesh may become discolored when stored at temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
These garnet sweet potatoes were bred to be sweeter that I cannot stand the taste. Even winter squashes seem too sweet. I prefer the less sweet root vegetables such as taro and potatoes.
I also enjoy something the hispanic community calls " batata ". It is almost white in color and not as sweet as yams or sweet potatoes. I add it to a stew, as one of its many vegetables. Jesus is Love
if you wrap the potato in aluminum foil you get aluminum leach in the potato. is that the extra nutrient you suggest. how important is aluminum for your body?

I am sure they are delicious that way, however, you might as well eat candy. Sorry to say that, but try them without the sugar, you might be surprised.
There isn't a problem with that. That is what I do all the time. Wash them properly, place on a plate and put in microwave for 6-8 minutes according to the size. You can also eat the skin. Very delicious for breakfast with scrambled eggs.
Don't use aluminum foil in the oven at all, ever. Use a stainless steel or cast iron pot with a lid. Get rid of your aluminum and teflon pans. We don't want poisins/toxins attaching to our foods. This comes from indirectly touching the food too. Fumes adhere to your food so parchment won't stop it.
I hate them with the only exception being Okinawan purple sweet potatoes cooked with a little orange juice & just a few white raisins. A little cardamom doesn't hurt either.
I love sweet potato; boiled with skin on, roasted, fried covered with rice flour, or boiled, dried in the sun. All very nice, but must be white flesh, pink outer skin. My parents grew them in East Africa.
Does anyone have comments about slo-cooking? I've tried it twice. The first time was a colossal failure and I had to throw out the entire pot. The second was a rousing success.
That's my question too. Nothing needed to be added. All those additives just take away the lovely flavor. Keep it natural, sweet and delicious. One of the good things about sweet potato, it is delicious for breakfast with scrambled eggs and a cup of mint tea. I cook my sweet potato in the microwave on six to eight minutes or a little more if it's big.
@@yolandalindsey5765 it is a good foil to the other spicy ( I pack my rice/lentil with spices) foods. Oh yeah and I also include qunoa most of the time. I guess it is what they call a "buddha bowl"

My favorite way is to scrub the skins with a veggie brush in a bowl of water, & then a quick rinse under the faucet. Then I rub the skins with a bit of a good oil, like Olive or Avocado, & bake them, a few at a time, with space in between, in a baking pan. I don't pierce them, as I want to retain their moisture which helps the baking process. This way, I enjoy eating their crispy skins. In a 425° oven, they take about an hour, depending on size. For people who can't eat sugar, I've heard it helps to cube & boil them, but they seem to lose a lot of flavor. The texture of boiled cubes is nothing like the soft mushy sweet baked ones. The cubed form can be cooked in a home made soup, so nutrients are not lost, or in a curried lentil dish, simmered in coconut milk until all are soft. BTW - they're not in the potato family & they're not yams either. So what are they? They need a new, better name!
You were on a pretty good roll there until you claimed them not to be part of the potato or yam family. Sometimes you just need to leave a good thing alone 🤫😐
People, if you think too slow, you can slow down the speed on RUclips. This is much more effective than displaying publicly just how weak your brain is.
My take on a mistake. Applying a brown sugar glaze on sweet potatos! LIke sprinkling sugar on ice cream. Sweet potatos are by definition, SWEET! Why the glaze??
I cook them whole (skin pierced) at 400 F for 45-60 minutes, depending on size. The high heat breaks down the tough fibers, so the interiors are as smooth and creamy as a soufflé.
There's no point in piercing the skin. Freeze them for 1-2 hours, then cook at 450F for 90-120 minutes.
I cook them for 3 hours. On 375. The longer they cook the more the starches break down into suger.
Exactly---and I don't even bother with washing and scrubbing the skin at all (I purchase organic)

What about cooking them in the microwave?
There isn't a problem with that. That is what I do all the time. Wash them properly, place on a plate and put in microwave for 6-8 minutes according to the size. You can also eat the skin. Very delicious for breakfast with scrambled eggs.
at Outback Steakhouse
I like get a steak with aside of
Sweet potatoe with honey butter with cinnamon, without brown sugar
Don't use aluminum foil in the oven at all, ever. Use a stainless steel or cast iron pot with a lid. Get rid of your aluminum and teflon pans. We don't want poisins/toxins attaching to our foods. This comes from indirectly touching the food too. Fumes adhere to your food so parchment won't stop it.
Well depending on the size? I'd say put them in the broiler for 35, 40, 45 depending how they look.
I tried to eat sweet potatoes several times. but also as a mashed version with butter and milk, i can't get the stuff down.
Not for everyone but I’d never add milk to them mashed. They’re not like white potatoes that way.
try french fries.
@Heloise O'Byrne - ok, I will give them a last chance...
I hate them with the only exception being Okinawan purple sweet potatoes cooked with a little orange juice & just a few white raisins. A little cardamom doesn't hurt either.
add brown sugar or honey with butter....yum
I did not like sweet potatoes for years because they were ususlly candied and covered with marshmallows. I would scrape the marshmallows off.
I love sweet potato; boiled with skin on, roasted, fried covered with rice flour, or boiled, dried in the sun. All very nice, but must be white flesh, pink outer skin. My parents grew them in East Africa.
I cut a SP in half and put it in a crock pot with 3 tsp of water after breakfast and it's ready by lunch, too simple!
Does anyone have comments about slo-cooking? I've tried it twice. The first time was a colossal failure and I had to throw out the entire pot. The second was a rousing success.
I love sweet potatoes and I love olive oil, but not together ever. (Suggested at 4:03).
How could something which grows under ground have pesticide on it?
What? You think the ground is solid and never can soak through it?
wpl - their greens are above ground
how dare you say that potatoes and sweet potatoes have equivalent nutritional content! Sweet potatoes have significantly higher content of vitamin A
They do last for months and months at room temp. We store ours in the basement.
I literally just made some sweet potatoes 😳
Seeing lots of adding of butter and other ingredients to this perfectly delicious food. Why????????
That's my question too. Nothing needed to be added. All those additives just take away the lovely flavor. Keep it natural, sweet and delicious. One of the good things about sweet potato, it is delicious for breakfast with scrambled eggs and a cup of mint tea. I cook my sweet potato in the microwave on six to eight minutes or a little more if it's big.
@@yolandalindsey5765 yep I will oftentimes include baked sweet potato with my brown rice/lentil/yogurt/kimchi "brunch"
@@christinebadostain6887 I haven't tried it with yogurt, but with lentils and brown rice.
@@yolandalindsey5765 it is a good foil to the other spicy ( I pack my rice/lentil with spices) foods. Oh yeah and I also include qunoa most of the time. I guess it is what they call a "buddha bowl"
Lmfao that's how cooking works
I like sweet potatoes and your information was very helpful can you do one on strawberries please are they fattening so I’m on a diet and I have I have some sweet potatoes and I do like them I did have too many phone because the sugar I know it’s a natural sugar but is it fattening sweet potato can you tell us in your next one you do thank you very much
A full 3 minutes of care and storage before any cooking is mentioned.
I thought the skins were not supposed to be eaten... ☠️
Just like regular potatoes 😀
Some of these look like yams not sweet potatoes- there is a difference isn’t there?
sweet potatoes are not as tasty as they were when I was growing up. Must be why cooks started over doing the marshmallow casseroles
Unless you're over 80, cooks were over doing the marshmallow casseroles before you were born.
@@mariap.thisislife8735 It's true. Sweet potatoes & any type of potatoes are not related. Also, Yams aren't in either of those families.

Sweet potatoes are good just like regular potatoes
You talk to fast 😱🤷♀️
Yes. Grating on the ears too nasally.
Please slow down the information you're giving !!
It's impossible to take notes !!
People, if you think too slow, you can slow down the speed on RUclips. This is much more effective than displaying publicly just how weak your brain is.
Go to settings on right upper corner and choose0.75 speed
Or are you listening too slow?
THANK YOU FOR THE EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION SINCERELY YOUR'S CHARLETNEWTON
My take on a mistake. Applying a brown sugar glaze on sweet potatos! LIke sprinkling sugar on ice cream. Sweet potatos are by definition, SWEET! Why the glaze??
Does anyone know why every time i eat sweet potatoes i belch rotten eggs for 2 hours or more .I have not eaten eggs for days.
Yall should try the white Sweet potato
I eat mine with the skin I just make sure to scrub the skins before I cook them.
Umm okay, well at Kroger all we got is the orange ones.
