Life In Manila As An Expat / Living In Manila As An Expat
One of the most common questions is what is life in Manila like as an expat? Of course, there are many different areas to discuss when addressing living in Manila as an expat, but if I were to summarise this answer into a few sentences, I would say…
Life in Manila as an expat is more expensive and hectic, and many expats find other cities outside of Metro Manila more convenient for living. Nonetheless, Manila is a one-of-a-kind city that does offer many advantages for expats, especially if you are interested in business and investment.
When looking at living in Manila pros and cons, one not-so-discussed advantage for expats is that the Philippines and Manila specifically have been influenced by international culture. This includes western culture and other Asian cultures such as Korean culture. This has led to Manila being a trendy destination for expats traveling or living in the Philippines.
If you enjoy the quieter way of life and you are looking to save some cash, Manila may not be the best city to live in. But if money is not a problem and you enjoy the busyness of a capital, then Manila will not disappoint.
Lastly, after discussing living in Manila pros and cons, we touched upon several areas. One of these areas was safety. Safety in the Philippines is an important area that we have covered in greater detail previously, so it’s always recommended to do your research before traveling to Manila due to the high rates of reported crimes.

In general most of this is true. Just commenting here as a Filipino who has been living here since the 1980s. :
    1. Crime is not a big deal if you stay in the okay parts of town and use your common sense. Like any big city there are nice parts and dodgy bits.
    2. It is important to differentiate the city of Manila, near the sea, and Metro Manila, which include the many cities surrounding it. This is where most of the business districts are. You mentioned a population of 1.6M for Manila. That is the inner city and not metro Manila which is in excess of 10M people.
    3. Traffic is bad but the pandemic has lessened it. Also, more infrastructure is coming to ease the congestion.
    4. Other cons you did not mention: poor air quality. Lax enforcement of emissions standards means many vehicles spew dirty smoke into the air. Also, a lack of public parks. A big con in the Philippines is expensive electricity which likely adds to the elevated cost of living.
    5. Pros: owning a car is not too expensive, unlike in Singapore. Parking spaces usually rent in most condos for US$80 to US$100 a month.
    6. Labor is not cheap compared to other ASEAN countries but compared to developed countries it's okay. You can get a massage here for 6-10 USD.

As a Filipino living in a rural area, I can't imagine myself renting or buying a house in Manila (except of course in condos or hotels) because I am terrified of my house being burned down as houses are really close to each other. Not talking about informal settlers. Good video!

Wait till you know that in the US and much of the west, all houses are made of wood, not concrete

@@1966bluemax Agreed, but fire never spread from house to house unlike here. Though they have a limited front/backyard, they still have spaces between homes thanks to the grid layout.

Overall, this video was good and I subscribed. However, when describing the metropolitan area, please say the "NCR" - not Manila. Kindly use correct terminology. Metro Manila is now referred to as the National Capital Region (NCR) consisting of about 16 different cities and each has its own pros and cons. I saw pictures of Makati City, Quezon City and Pasay City being called Manila. This is a disservice to residents of Manila City.
