My grandma used to say the same saying to make me stop crying when I was little. It's just like that lyric "you better not cry" in santa claus is coming to town 🙂

You just have to live through the last 40 or so years to learn how to laugh and cry at the same time......😅😅

I'm Korean American and I've heard that saying regularly growing up. I totally forgot about it until now. I feel like it has to do with keeping composure and not looking foolish.

I nearly always cry when I laugh. I don't think mine is particularly hairy but I don't have a lot of experience with others to compare.

It's a ridiculous joke that makes you laugh off the embarrassing situation of crying and laughing, but it's very effective.
    Actually, all Koreans know.
It's like 'bless you' when you sneeze in the West .

OMG, Why am I watching this right now though. I asked my parents and they told me it hasn't been that frequently used these days.
When it comes to their generation, my dad and mum heard deadly a lot from their parents(FYI, My nan sometimes says the quote too hahaha)

Just a small and gentle joke that lands in a situation your child or loved one seem to be just about to bawl out and you don't want them to start go off in a way that's so painful you know you can't stand or handle with.
And you just drop that total absurd expression of nonsense to prevent them from crying.
That way you can also buy them some time to think about what's that supposed to be at the same time when they're getting oblivious of what makes them cry.
And it's just total nonsense they can't also resist or help laughing at the stupidity.

    Raise the level!
Here's a nice Korean saying: "물이 깊어야 고기가 모인다."
큰 德望이 있어야 남이 따르게 된다.
It can mean: If one has a great depth of virtue, others will (want to) follow you.

It is typical Korean expression. Every Korean knows it. 울다가 웃으면 똥구멍에 털 난다.
