- Here we go with one of the most exciting new lenses for Canon's new EOS R mirrorless cameras. It carries impressive specifications and a much smaller size than usual for a lens in its class - let's put it through its paces.

Your voice and the music makes me nostalgic, when I started, dreaming of certain lenses, watching your stuff.
Really relatable! Brings me back to my first couple of lens choices from when taking pictures was just an hobby. Still one of the the best reviewers.
If Canon don't use the sneeze & humpback bridge line in its marketing then it's missing a trick 😄 Great review as always Christopher 👍
Lenses i would like you to test (because i only trust YOUR reviews):
- Sony GM 24mm 1.4
- Sony G 20mm 1.8
- Tamron 17-28mm 2.8
- Tamron 70-180mm 2.8
+ Sony 85 1.4 GM
Why only Chris? Lenstip, opticallimits, camera labs, some folks on Fredmiranda, and imaging resource do good technical reviews.
Christopher's testing methodology is good but it's not crucially accurate enough to gauge a fair comparison between lenses due to variable environmental, user error, camera software/hardware error or other outside conditions that may affect the results. If you're spending big money on a lens purchase, use the most resources as you can, including Christopher's testing but I wouldn't limit myself to just one review.
How about: Trust your own eyes?
You can purchase, test 14 days and send back if not for your like. What is the issue with that?
Check out Dustin Abbot, he does great lens reviews and covers the Sony lenses you mentioned.
I have two kids so I'm getting a $2200 stimulus check. I'll use it to buy this lens and let my kids starve.
You still need an extra kid for another $500 to cover this lens 100%
He's got that covered... his right kidney is for sale on Craigslist
This made me lol (of course I hope you’re joking)
They need to learn to fend for themselves. That's what child labor is for...
bruh
I do have some complaints about this lens:
1. The front slides if you don't lock it.
2. While the stabilizer in the 24-70 seems better than advertised (got to slightly over 5 stops), I rarely get more than 4.5 stops with this one.
3. The lens hood is REALLY big.
Some good news:
1. Because it's smaller and lighter, and can focus closer, it's actually a much more usable lens than my old Mark II.
2. It may not be perfect against bright light, but it's much, much better than the mark II.
3. That huge hood can accept 82mm filters when used with step up adapter, so I can used the same filters I already own for the 15-35 and 24-70.
Just read this comment, do you need to put the hood on first if you want to use that 82mm filter along with the hood?
Did you use maybe Sigma 135 1.8 ? I'm thinking about buying this Sigma or Canon 70-200RF 2.8 and I wonder if it is big difference in bokeh and IQ (for example 135 f1.8 vs 200 f2.8)
@@petercarpowitz7007 Sigma Win.
This is definetly a dream lens, but the price tag makes that fact completely irrelevent for most people unfortunately... :'( Great review though!
It is for pros who get back their investments
@@DarkPa1adin just because someone earns money with photography doesn't mean they can just throw money at gear. Most photographers will still look at the price tag and evaluate very carefully if they really need a lens. And considering, that this lens is very expensive even for a 70-200 f2,8 and that there are good alternative does not make this an automatic buy for pros.
@@jakob.k_design but consider the ROI for pro photographers? within 1-2 jobs they can get back their money. I never knew how expensive photographers charges until I got married. of course they are worth it because they nailed the focus compared to an average hobbyist
I got my 70-200mm f2.8 IS ii EF lens for $2,000 AUD used and I love it! Very professional lens with (IMO) much more appealing bokeh. There's nothing this RF lens has to offer that I'm missing. So just because its newer doesn't mean the older EF version wont do a good enough job
@@nick8945 the EF one is larger enough that you can't put it vertically in the backpack
I'm too poor to get one of these so I ended up getting an 80-200 f/2.8L to use on my EOS RP. It helps me stay in shape at least!
You're the only person I've heard _praise_ the fact that it doesn't zoom internally.
Did you not watch the video about all the benefits of smaller size etc...? If your issue is with dust, pleased to tell you it is not a problem, as Lens Rentals, one of the most respectable lens teardowns in industry says it's fine.
www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/12/the-not-very-long-awaited-teardown-of-the-canon-rf-70-200mm-f2-8-is/
Ikr? I always thought of the EF lens as the more professional one because of its internal zoom mechanism but now that I've seen the RF lens in use and how much smaller it is, I guess my doubt is kinda gone. At least, if the build quality is that good that no dust can get inside
@@xpynuker I'm just going to assume you jumped the gun. Because absolutely nowhere did I say I had a problem with it.
@@RealRaynedance I think they did. Your comment was positive!
@@DanielFazzari Like I get it, the way I said it implies that it bothers me, but it really doesn't.
Very well done and pleasing video to watch. I might rent this lens.
Hi Chris , I bought this lens based on your review .... and it really is a great lens ... I got it at a great price too
thanks for recommending this lens , I really enjoy using it too
It has nanoUSM? Sweet! I've been wanting Canon to use that focus system in more lenses. So glad to hear that they are doing it! If all the holy trins have it I might have to move the to RF system once the R5 and R6 are out. Video has become a much bigger part of what I do, but I still shoot a lot of action shots. NanoUSM lets me do both without having to have lenses dedicated to one or the other, or rely on off camera audio (which I have very little of). I'm still torn on the zoom not being all internal. It's growing on me, I guess I'll have to have one in hand before I decide.
As always, great review Mr Frost. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Considering shift to canon mirrorless again for this lens..
Yes, the form factor by itself justifies the title of « best 70-200 2.8 on the market »
GallicGarlic Tamron 70-180 also impresses me on Sony.
I heard a click ever so slightly when the rf 70-200 is focusing on the book case then back to the bird but I doubt when other noise is happening you’d hear it. I still prefer the Ef glass over the rf zoom I’m not a extending barrel fan I prefer it to be as tank like as possible, it’s also distracting to see this. It’ll never be as satisfying as the ef mount 70-200 was but it can’t be stopped now
I still can’t believe how much smaller it is than the EF ones.
But that's only because it's zooming externally which is imho a not so professional feature, I'd actually say the EF one is the more professional lens
@@nilswegner2881 how many clients are going to look at your lens and care if it is zooming externally?
@@Wabajak13 my clients do care though if the photos have signs of a dirty lens on them. Of course with the exceptional build quality of this lens it might be a non issue but moving parts on the outside of the lens could be a way to let dust or other dirt get pumped into the lens
@@nilswegner2881 dusts 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@NicoDa1 my 28-70 f2.8L from 1992 has an external zoom mechanism too but because the Lens hood is mounted to the side of the lens body instead of to the front, the moving front element stays inside the hood. I've had dust inside this lens before which is why I'm concerned about the new 70-200. But as I already said, it might be a non issue with that exceptional build quality
Thank you for the amount of work you put into these videos! I truly appreciate this!
When I bought it here in Hong Kong last December, it was only $15000 HKD (~£1500) in local shops (non-chain outlets)~
Genuine copy with warranty too! Been mesmerised ever since! Looking forward to the EOS R5 to match it soon!
I've never shot Canon and probably never will, but boy, that's one neat lens, and, of course, another great lens review.
Thanks another thoroughly objective review Chris. It is interesting to compare your results for this lens against Dustin Abbott’s review of the new Tamron 70-180. From his results I would say that the new Tamron betters not only the Sony GM but this lens too, at less than half the cost of the RF (US$1200). Hopefully you will get a chance to look at that one too. I would love to know what you think. I own the GM paired with the A9II, but I never use IS with this lens as I shoot mainly sports, hence the Tamron would be a better choice as seems slightly superior to the GM in AF, on par in image quality, but much lighter.
We may disagree on many subjects, Chris, but your review methodology is simple, but impeccable - something I can't help but acknowledge. Bravo!
I dare say after watching the Sigma review on the 24-70 and 70-200 and the same on the Canon, I like the Canon's.I don't like the barrel distortion on the Canon 27-70 but with in camera correction, I think I'll be fine. Thank you Christopher for 4 great reviews and now to sell the rest of my EF and EF-S gear to make the full switch to RF lenses to work on my R5 and R7. As always, thanks again and just so ya know, I bought that expensive little heavy camera clock you use in your reviews and is it a pistol to change the patter and/or set. So, come time change, I leave it. LoL
I'm glad that Canon developed the EF to RF adapter so those of us who have several EF lenses don't see a future with the twice as expensive RF.
That autofocus is blazing fast. Nice.
I just bought this lens... love it!
I got the 70-200/2.8ii IS when they first came out, I paid £1800+ for it. It's sat at home for years without any real use. It's a focal length I just don't care for. I also have the 16-35/4, it keeps my 70-200 company in my camera cupboard.
With these RF lens costing so much it's a mistake I won't make again.
I enjoy your videos very much Chris. thank you, keep on this amazing work.
I did it. I pulled the trigger. Just ordered the r6 and this lens. I'm so excited.
edit: I'm not rich lol. I sold a bunch of things and all of my current camera gear
Good for you Chad, I picked up my R6 yesterday and I'm blown away by it.
Love to see a comparison between this and the soon available Nikon Z 70-200 f2.8 S lens, which is a true f2.8 sharp wide open right across the frame
But probably not on this channel, Chris has never done any Nikon related reviews, it was always either Sony or Canon. So I don't think he has a Nikon Z camera or will ever buy one
"Then comes the very solid feeling tripod mount which is.. well it's just a tripod mount really" 😄😄😄
I love the face in the blue lamp on the sharpness tests.
Christopher is so happy this Canon is really good, almost too happy. :) Great video as usual.
Great lens review as always. What an awesome lens with a big price tag.
Damn you Canon....why are your lenses so damn nice?
I checked many reviews but this one is simply the best!, Thanks
Today was a good day, becuse you uploaded a video and it was about a lens I'm planning on buying, and with your seal of aproval, I feel better about it.
What a great review. Thank you!!
If you can review the Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM II Thank you
Great review as always Christopher, is there a Tamron 70-180 review coming up?
Thanks I'll stick with my old model, the things a beast.
dream lens for event gimbal candid work paired with my r6 II and rs3 pro. possible to overdose on bokeh with this one
I would have been impressed as a Sony shooter butttt. Sigma is making the sharpest images and some of the gmasters are banging
Everytime I watch one of your videos Christopher, I end up buying a lens. It's been like this for years. I feel we're in a relationship.
Noting, that the Tripod mount got a important bigger gab between lens and mount! So it’s nicer to hold with 2 fingers.
Question for you Chris. Did you ever do a review of the DSLR version of the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L lens?
Waiting for that
Been waitin' a long time for this one! Thanks for making this vid!
Wow, that image quality is beautiful
Can you please talk to my wife, 🥺. I really want this lens.
God the Father and Jesus the Son our savior and the head of the Church. Order is in place. The man has the final words in the household if you need to keep order and priorities and you know very well what those are..."yes dear."
It’s amazing and sad to me how many photography videos have comments with men complaining that their wives won’t let them buy stuff
@@JeremyGalloway lol, we need to take care of our wives more than our hobbies
You shouldn't tell your wife you want this lens. You NEED this lens to take beautiful pictures of your wife and her family, friends and loved ones. You should tell her this lens is antidepression medication especially in this stay-at-home era. I hope you get your lens :-)
Same story here. I bought this lens and i told that this lens is free with Camera. No question dude..
Great review! Thanks a lot! I have to ask tho, can you read the text that you used to test the CA perfomance?
Always great review coming from your channel 👍
I would love to know how the EF canon 70-200 2.8 IS II or III would stack up against this lens! they can be half to third the price second hand so I am strongly tempted to buy one of those and just adapt it to my RF camera!
I also prefer the metal build of those older lenses and internal zooming, and I need to work out more so I wouldn't mind the extra weight :P
Please could you make video guidance for upgrading Canon kit lens for APS-C in 2020? I can't decide which lens should I buy.
finally! i’ve been waiting for this for months!
Un plaisir de l'écouter. (un anglais plus que parfait)
Been quietly waiting for this video...thank you. May I ask if you have made an acquisition of this lens for your possession or was it a rental?
This video validates my decision to get this lens. Great job & very informative! I'm coming from the EF 70-200 f/2.8 II, so I know the images it produces, now this one on my R6.
My dude reviewing my long awaited fave lens 😊
I brought the lens last month and the only thing I don't like is that it zoom creeps, at least when I have the hood on, and I am walking around with it face down on a strap. It does have the "lock" function to fix that. But it is a little annoying to turn that on and of when you want to zoom. But it is only a minor thing, I have not testes if it does the same without the lenshood.
my only complain about this lens, beside the ridiculus price, is no TC compatible - c'mon canon...
You really should do an update to some of these videos with your R5 …
This lens trades its internal zoom with its compact size
You still have your original 6D, Christopher? What a trooper.
Great Video Chris
I think it's very sharp at center in all f's, but a little expensive. Thanks!!!
I Have This lense, and it is really amazing, i am a gear guy, and want all the new RF Lenses, trying to buy 2 pr year
What's your occupation? Surgeon? Dentist? Lawyer?
@@DarkPa1adin haha, just spend less on beer? And earn your stuff back. People who buy this should at least do photography professional jobs, otherwise they are just uncertain people wanting crazy sharpness mwhuwaha
Killer lens, killer price. Great review 😎😎😎
Not a big fan of the external zooming. I like the Ef version with the internal zoom.
that price is beyond ridiculous
Makes me interested in Tamron's 70-180. Too bad it isn't 75 or 80 to 200, I use the long end of the 70-200s quite a lot.
After buying 70-200mm which lens should i go for
24-70mm
85mm
105mm
135mm
Please anyone
24-70
Lol...the RF is shorter because the barrel extends when it zooms, which raises concerns over how dust and water sealed this beast will be in comparison to the EF. In tests I have read on these two lenses the IQ of each is nearly identical unless you pixel peep the edges of the frame. I think I'll stick to my EF and save 26 hundo.
Can you please review the Samyang 85mm F1.4 High Speed Auto Focus Lens for Canon. Please and thank you. I'm thinking about getting it.
METHOS THE CLOWN just buy one, they are fantastic.
@@FromtheShires really. So I should just go head and get one...
@@FromtheShires I've been looking for videos on it there's only one or two . And I want more info on it.
METHOS THE CLOWN I’ve had mine for nearly 3 months and I really like it. The lens is capable of superb quality images and the bokeh is incredible. I wouldn’t hesitate buying one again. The rubber weather seal is a bit fragile and needs treating carefully but that’s the only slight caution around it. Get the lens station, I’ve just updated with the latest firmware with it and the lens appears even slightly improved from before. Hope that helps your decision making.
@@FromtheShires yes it does. And thank you... So much
Don't know the market Canon is aiming for. Taken the cost of the upmarket R body and this lens, and the other R lens released, no matter how good the glass, only pros, or the mega well-healed can afford.
Have a 10-year-old 40-200 F4, no IS ( appreciate that not an exact fit for mirrorless and has been superseded) ; great results and didn't need 2.8. Great lens.
You pay a small fortune for 2.8 and IS.
Tamron competitor and Sigma, offer seriously cheaper competition.
Great review the lens is perfect
Focus breathing is terrible plus it sucks dust in and you can't attach a converter.
Keep up the lovely videos !!
WARNING: polar pro VND filters do not fit with lens hood attached. Just seen people talk about the lens hood opening but it’s useless with a nice polar pro 77mm filter
Good review ........ but sadly you didn't mention the lens's real weak point ...... focus breathing at 200mm when shooting portraits ....... that's the price you pay for an extending 70-200 F2.8 zoom !!
Can you please review the 85 1.2 DS
Another great review! Although it is an EF mount lens, I would really like to hear your thoughts on the Canon 400mm DOII lens. It is my lens for wildlife photograph and is sharpest (I think) at f4. I would especially like to know how it performs when adapted to an RF mount Canon.
You cannot use a teleconverter with it, so it is a little limited for wildlife photographers used to using this type of lens with a 1.4x tele.
Now if only we had a pancake RF lens... hate using adapters when I’m trying to go light
There is one coming this 2020!
Thank you so much ❤️
The price 🤔🤔
A Small request 🙏
Is it possible to do a comparison between ef 70 200 is usm and this rf 70 200 in eos r camera
Once again thank you 😊
Usm L II or L?
Wow.... Canon RF lenses have generally been a knockout that this one is simply incredible. Their system looks better and better every day.
Very unusual to review an $2700 lens in this channel , generally you review budget lenses more often.
Anyway waiting to see Tamron 70-180 review
AH Monon He has tried to review the RF lenses a lot. I appreciate it as an RP owner
That price really hurts lol! Personally, I'm more interested in the new 100-500 they're working on, as I do a lot of wildlife photography. However, it might make more sense to go with the 70-200 and the new RF 2x teleconverter
The teleconverter doesn't fit on the RF 70-200 unfortunately.

Yamaha Guitar😍😍😍
I just sold off most of my EF lenses to buy the RF 85, but now as I’m about to pull the trigger I’m second guessing and thinking maybe I want this lens instead 😩 I just need to win the lottery and get both...
If only they weren't so expensive...
I did it. Literally had an adrenaline rush when I tried this lens for thew first time yesterday, it's unreal how much quality they packed into the small size... The wow factor of the size CAN NOT be translated through a screen. Walking around with this lens or packing it in a bag feels like working with a large prime, much different than the feeling of handling a large zoom. I've got the RF 85 on loan right now and this smaller and lighter lens defies what we've always known about the experience of using a 70-200... I think as more photographers get a chance to handle this thing, particularly wedding/event photographers and traveling photographers, canon is going to regain a huge bunch of the fans they lost to Sony in recent years.
How is the Canon RF 70-200 f2.8 for astrophotography?
Is the coma reduced?
I'm torn between f2.8 and f4
As someone who spends a lot of time in the outdoors I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with a lens that trombones. Inevitably stuff works its way inside.
Can totally see how portability is a benefit for more people than ruggedness though.
Peter Yates most profesionell zooms are built this way, with internat focusing and this pences extremrely well built so i wouldnt worry shooting it outside .
@@Herkulez1981 no externally focusing (tromboning) lens is going to be very weatherproof unless you don't zoom when it's raining
Never had problems zoomning with my 24-70L or 16-35 L lenses in the rain and this one is better built . But others may had problems
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! God bless!
Love the lense. Can you please review fuji 10-24mm
I hear that the previous 70-200 F2.8 IS III is just a tad sharper than this one, a bit bulkier as well, have you had the chance to look at that one as well mate?
It's good and nice for all occasion not heavy to carry around and not too long for this size of lens but how the price?
It was a toss up between this and the RF 85 F1.2. My heart said 85mm F1.2, but me and my brain walked out the store with the RF 70-200mm.
did u choose for now?
@@maisiaola The 85mm is priced down on amazon.de right now to 2248 euro. 750 euro less than normal. I have to resist! :p

You really enjoyed this review I can hear it in your voice lol
Great review, although I thought for sure you were going to say it was "like sneezing and farting at the same time"... I need to get out of this house!
I took some pictures the other day in the day with off camera flash at f/22 to overpower the sun, I really saw the effects of diffraction, Capture One has a diffraction correction and it seemed to fix the softness. Is this just sharpening or do they have a magic sauce?
u nail it everytime !
Thanks for posting.
I watched fro knows photos comparison of these two yesterday.
You forgot to do the sniff test😜😜😜😜
APERTURE ADE Christopher Frost's videos are well-made and offer good information on a pragmatic way. Comparison with that guy's clickbait is almost insulting in my opinion.
Canon RF lens made a new level of zoom lens!
