    In a Battleship I mostly use AP so the enemy can feel my hip thrusting when I 1 shot them.

      +DakilisDealt You're right, they don't. But it still isn't random. A pen of the citadel does full listed AP damage, a pen without citadel is 33%, and an overpenetration will deal 10%.
      The numbers start changing when sections of a ship hit damage "thresholds." You'll see them darkened and scorched. Standard pens without hitting the citadel to these areas will deal less damage.
      HE damage also isn't random, but they depend on armor thickness more. Too much armor and they won't deal damage (but still have a chance to start a fire on that section). Thresholds do affect HE damage as well.

      Yeah that tend to happened to me so you would use HE instead of AP
      Note: use HE for low armoured ships (Destroyers and Cruisers) and AP for Heavy armoured ships (Battleships and Aircraft carriers)

    Battleships=AP at ALL times. Long reload, much higher damage and citadels with AP, HE is never worth it in a battleship.
    Cruisers=AP at cruisers, AP or HE at carriers and HE at battleships and destroyers. Fire HE at a carrier if you have 6" guns or smaller, alternating AP/HE is more for the 8" guns. AP at cruisers, citadels and higher damage than HE, you'll kill him faster than they kill you if they're firing HE. And HE should ALWAYS be fired at Destroyers wherever possible.
    Destroyers=HE at ALL times. The benefit of firing AP at other destroyers is too minute to take into account, the Japanese Destroyers also dont reload fast enough to make the change in ammo practical in battle. The Grem is the only exception to the rule, she's got cruiser levels of penetration so fire AP and cruisers.

      When it comes to ranges the general rule is to fire HE at mid range (15-8 KM, dependant on tier) and AP and long (further than 15 KM) and close range (closer than 8KM).
      Since the range on most cruisers doesn't exceed 15 KM, HE spamming is valid at maximum cruiser range, hence why its so effective, but AP is better to switch to at 8 KM or closer.
      Destroyers don't have enough penetration to fire AP at any range (apart from Grem, cruiser rules apply there)
      And battleships reload too slowly to normally exploit any advantage from firing HE, just fire AP, even if you over match you'll do about the same damage as the HE on a full-damage hit. The gap between damage values on a battleship is just too huge.*
      *This is all just my experience from playing since alpha, your experience may differ, but the mechanics (based on my experience) are best exploited (in their current form) by using the tactics listed above.

      +Mancboy2000 that USED to be true then they nerfed AP rnds now HE with its fires seems to be the defacto way to play. ( they need to nerf fire a lot IMO takes to long to put out and enemies can keep you on fire forever if they have fast firing guns)

      Alberto Martinez You don't use AP often do you? That or you get really unlucky.
      AP will kill a ship VERY QUICKLY if you're firing at the correct areas, at the correct angel with the correct guns. Its knowing what is and isn't correct which makes AP either a terrifying killer or a useless pea shot.

      Nukeclears o i believe it i've seen it happen myself lol nothing like hitting for 300 at point plank, tho i normally try to hit the citadels at close range which i assumed has enough metal to stop an AP shell. But i guess consistent dmg is better.

      DDs have low HP and it is balanced with no citadels. I mean 1 yamato's 460mm shell could almost oneshot a DD. Firing AP at destroyers doesn't make any sense cuz you will eather do 10% max AP dmg (overpen) or 25% (peneteration) which is awful. HE is so much better because it also destroys shit ton of their modules

      Destroyers do have citadels but they are small and in very odd places like on wickes one of her main battery citadels is behind the gun not below it. It's near impossible to hit but I have done it before high teirs they may disappear for balance sake

    Fires are OP as hell in this game. Cruisers just spam HE and sink battleships with ease, even though battleships are supposed to be hard counter to cruisers.

    One time I was in a Minekaze, running away from enemy fire, and wait for it:
    A Gnevny blew up my magazine with wait for it:
    A single HE shell aimed at my stern

      Cit shots happen. what get me is the "random" way i hit 5-6-7-8 shells and get ZERO damage. happens a lot to CC capt's.

    this is why I use HE on crusers destroyers and tier 3 battleships and use AP shells on teir 4 or over crusers and battleships

    Dont think much of using AP against rival Destroyers. The AP damage is only a fraction higher than the HE, and it pays for it by critting less often.
    Maybe the stronk soviet DDs with their 130mm guns will be more effective with AP.

    WW2 BB's had something like 2% hit rates. But in the game it's more like 20-50%! Get real.

    Still think heavy AP shells that over-penetrate should cause flooding.
    Think about it, your firing shells THROUGH the enemy ship. This type of mechanic would do a lot to stop some of the complaining about DDs, though it's impossible to stop ALL of the complaining.

      HE shells can not bounce. But they can shatter.If you are a light cruiser or a DD firing at an armored cruiser, it might happen.

      an APCR shell goes through more armour, but does less damage. they didnt use APCR or HEAT on ships. they just didn't do enough damage

    damage may not be rng, but i dont even know how many times i have shot every gun (full salvo or sequential fire) and had the shots splice around the ship. THEY NOT EVEN TRYING TO DODGE, JUST GOING STRAIGHT THEY AVOID EVERYTHING!!

      +Ty Prince if all IJN ships would have type 3 shells all USN players would quit..... would like to see 460mm guns working as AA guns :P . Or as HE replacement as type 3 shells has multiply incendiary components =100% fire on impact = WG would die rather than give us that shell and so will all USN players.
      There have been multiply treads of the type 3 ammo in Forums, but supertesters and USN players always closes that tread and cries IJN is OP all ready don't give them armor nor new consumables. (the reason why USN ships are constantly underperforming and buffed for atleast for 10 patches in row??).
      at current patch 5.4 Yamatos deck armor is 75% 13mm thick and the top center of the ship 200mm =25% of ships total armor layout. Montana on the other hand has 75mm all around on the deck and at the rear and front ends 25mm =10% of the lay out. this was questioned form WGs staff only to be shut down by another spam fest from super testers in forum (tread was closed with in hour of release. Nice work WG Forum staff we do love freedom of speech not that you allow that)
      So IJN ships will never get to show they're "real" performance as USN players and some other ***** will rather let the game rot than give em to us. at currently the most OP and buffed nation is USN and most common nation used.... explains a lot.....

      Yes they will give USN beehive NO IJN will never get Type 3 shells as it would break hell to USN player.

    The problem here is that everyone uses HE .... Battleship it's not worth it but for ship with higher shot per minute HE it's OP you do way more damage HE over time than AP because of fire damage kills them getting lit on fire does more damage than flooding fire does more damage per second and the fire last longer so HE needs to be nerf at least make it were fire get taken out quicker

    Me as a Kongo, hit New York 17 times and did 4k dmg in total
    He shot me, hit ONE shell, did 7k damages. 30 secs later, hit me 3 shells, 2 of those are citadel hits
    Yeah, not random my *%^#*(@!!!

      +FoolOfATook feel free to check my stats: theanhtb; 51% for Wows and 52% for Wot, never platoon.
      I used APs all the time.
      I was angled, showed only the tip of my ship. He was full broadside.
      I know how the game mechanics work, I just can't stand the bs randomness of the game, hence the rage.

      +Duc Viet Truong USN ships are build to dominate IJN ships with ease... Players from USN did cry for OP IJN ships with long range guns.... only to fail to see the point where IJN BBs has very weak armor compared to USN BBs.... and so they buffed USN BBs guns to match IJN ships and they lost during that patch 2k players form the game.... they continued to buff USN to lose more ppl from game. now days you can que for 10 mins to battle on high tier ships or even mid tier ships. And ppl did say and complain about this (they got banned permanently)

      +FrenziedRoach destroyers cant penetrate most citadells unless they are made out of paper and huge like on the phoenix. Mostly they wont even penetrate the sidearmor.

      ***** Disperion is RNG mostly, so every time you are firing your guns you are using RNG to hope a good or even just A shot lands. So damage doesn't matter if it can't land. RNG+DMG= Random number depending on where you hit and with what shell you used which also skews the damage done.

      clamum I can see their standpoint because shell dispersion affects where a shell lands which is a huge factor in getting a cit, that's probably where all this RNG for cit BS probability came from

    the overpen mechanic is beyond stupid. Firing AP at a destroyer will always do the least damage, but at low tiers it doesn't make a difference because of the low HP pool of destroyers. At high tiers a destroyer can take hundreds of AP rounds from a Yamato, which makes no sense whatsoever. AP should do the same damage with those types of rounds, and destroyers should have citadels like every other ship.

      You should read "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors". It's about the Battle off Samar which was something like 3 DDs and I think 5 destroyer escorts against the Japanese Center Fleet. Sailors on the Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts mentioned how shells that impacted wouldn't always explode, and would just pass through the ship.

      +NeoRussia Once upon a time DD"s did have citadels. However, if you have played the Yubari, you can understand just how weak an unarmored ship with a citadel is. DD's were ridiculously easy to wreck, so they removed their citadels. That made them pretty OP so they nerfed their smoke, and thus you have DD's as they are now.

      It doesn't even have to do with realism, it just turns out that in WoWS the best protection a ship can have is 0 armour and a high hp pool, because having no armour makes you immune to AP shells. Which is why destroyers don't get killed in 1-2 salvoes at close range like cruisers do. It's not like I want to nerf destroyers either, its just stupid to have this mechanic to balance them around.

      +Sovietskikh I find that 10km is an ideal distance for engaging battleships, especially if you are at the helm of armored beasts like the Tirpitz or the Yamato. Getting that close, however, usually takes time and some luck if the other team properly screens their battleships. Nothing is more frustrating than being forced into a running battle with a HE-flinging cruiser.
