NICE. If your tire was balanced before doing this, and or you break both beads, mark the tire to rim. When you go to air it up, line up those marks and you'll keep it in balance.
It was the common way of breaking those beads back in the day. We would balance the tires ourselves also. We would use an old axle to spin the tire. Mike has a lot of knowledge in all these things.
I started out in life as a tyre fitter in '86 (UK), everything you showed in this video right down to the bead seal was bread and butter as everything rusted badly in those days. But how you broke the bead was and is a genius move, so impressed!!!!! 👍🇬🇧
Last time I had tires mounted I asked for a_ sure seal_ pair of tires. They clean inside w/brush, or whatever powertools ..added glue around the tire bead / P225 45 18 Ford car. Charged me 90 USD including balance weights and mounting. 1 pr front axle This same place charges $60 to properly patch /plus plug a punctured tier. And re balance.

Man SPC you are a gift... never thought about lifting vehicle up to break the bead on the tire...thanks for the video so Informative for the diy'er...let those so called professionals hate but I bet they will start using your tricks and still charge folks an arm and a leg!
Good stuff as usual. Although unfortunately had to learn this one previously myself, as new sets of tires were coming back from the 'modern' tire shops with bead leaks..in fact I took my daily driver vehicle back in June for a set a week old, and they rewarded me by scratching the heck out of my rim, and leaving a bead leak! So I do them myself, and use the same technique except for using a fresh steel wool for the rim smoothing. But thanks for showing everyone this.
It's a good idea to keep a ratchet strap in your vehicle for when the bead won't seat. Wrap the strap around the perimeter of the tire and crank until the bead gets as close to the rim as possible. Works best if the core is removed during this process to inject a larger volume of air that forces the bead toward the rim. Once the bead is set, reinstall the core and inflate to correct pressure. Keep fingers away from bead during inflation!
Had this problem after new tires were installed. Kept having to add air ever week and a half or so. Took back to tire shop to get oil changed and told them to check a see why tire would need air so often. Charged 20 bucks to clean oxidation off wheel. Question is if the tire shops know this is a problem why were they not cleaned as part of process when installing new tires? The rubber valve stems should be replaced when new tires are put on also.
Let’s here it folks. Mike for President and Julio for Vice President!!! You got my Vote!! MIKEY!!!! unbelievable video. Such great knowledge you pass on to us. Thank you so much my brother!!
I vote Amsoil. They have there tiers and I have used the top line offering (green cap) for a very long time with never a problem. Out is also one of the very few that is a real synthetic, unlike Mobil 1 that dropped their real synthetic oil years ago. If it says "full synthetic" it is actually made from crude. Amsoil is one of the few Group 4 oils (real synthetic) and most of the rest are Group 3, engineered crude oil. For those who don't believe it, check it out. Red Line is another real synthetic but I've never used it. The reason they can claim Group 3 oils are synthetic when they're not is due to a court ruling in a case between Castrol and Mobil. Once again, the consumer gets screwed.

I use dish soap sparingly. Wife wud stompnrhe gas so hard she wud spin the rim inside the tire!! Lolni knew because the marks I put on the tires at balance points were out of time.
Had the problem on a 2006 Honda Accord with aluminum rims, took it to Discount tire (bought the tires there about 3 years before) and they did what you did, but took off the tires (2) used air tools to clean up. Never had a problem, and they did it for free! Thanks! Jim PS......best oil......the one that’s synthetic, meets the SN or SN plus rating and is on sale! The above 4cyl. car went to 170,000 miles before I sold it (with no problems, what so ever), oil changes every 6,000 miles. Trans oil changes with Honda fluid every 30,000 miles. This car went over 200,000 miles before it was totaled on black ice.
This is plaguing my life right now. I'll now have to get off my butt and clean my wheels. Been avoiding it and just airing up every couple days for 2 years. How's that for lazy?! Thanks for the motivation!
I have had the same situation you keep thinking that it will stop leaking and it just keeps on then finally the frustration sets in so badly that you just get it done LOL
I have a wheelbarrow tire that beat me so badly that I bought a solid tire replacement. Will try this on the old tire to see if it will work. Thanks for this video.
Thanks again (and again) SPC! Have spent $150 on the left rear tire of my 1/2 ton at shops to stop the slow leak and it is money down the hole as it has only been getting worse, especially during the winter; losing over 10 lbs a weak or more and always getting the low pressure warning at the worst of times. Will get some bead sealer and try this out as soon as it warms up!!
Tire beads are where I find most of my troubles. Snowblowers, lawn tractors, hand trucks, wheelbarrows, most small rims aren't made for a tubeless tire but the manufacturers don't seem to care. So I pop the bead and glue the bead on to ensure it stays put and wont leak.
Man, you never disappoint with the content. My vote for oil goes to Quaker State Ultimate Durability Synthetic. Has a top rated film strength and is the only oil that makes my motorcycle run so quiet I had to double check it. This is coming from a former Mobil 1 guy.
@@SweetProjectCars What is NOT to like, Mike? You are sharing helpful, if not, interesting info. Leaks that reveal themselves with bubbles are easy. The tough rim leaks are positional; they may not leak for weeks and leak only when the tire is parked in a certain position and can go completely flat in an hour or two.
Fantastic ,female here I live in the country constantly having to start pumping up 2 tyres it can sit for 2 weeks tho ,but a 2009 mazda so probably a seal ,going to give this a try and buy the sealant ,im not bad at following instructions and diy ,never had a man who could so always tried myself ,not so with cars ,but hey can't go wrong un trying I have a perfect spare and it's getting an mot in 4 months so not want to buy new rims incase car needs large things done wasted money im sure I can do this perfectly used to sanding and cleaning is a woman's forte 😀 😉, so cheers subscribed for other helpful hints ,I recently had an immobiliser problem a mazda special problem fixed it by removing the immobiliser starts everytime ,ain't noone coming to were I live to steal a 2009 mazda ,great info guys cheers 🍻 👏 ✌️

Awesome tip right there!! Bead sealer, wow. Never knew about that. I have issues with 2 wheeled hand truck tires losing air all the time. Have to hit them with a little WD40 and a match to get them to seal up. Now I know!! Bead sealer. I have a feeling my hand truck tire issues were just solved!! Thanks much!!
Do this yourself "If no tire places are open". Let's just be real. We are doing this ourselves because we don't want to pay $20 for something we can do ourselves. Maybe we enjoy doing it ourselves. Maybe we don't have $20.
$20 I WISH! My local tire shop charged me two kidneys and a first born to pull all 4, scrub them down and put them back on. They neglected to mention that they were going to charge a pull off rim charge, and a put on rim charge, and then a rebalance charge x4 tires. They only quoted me a $ amount to scrub the rims down to which I agreed. TOTALLY SHAFTED!
I love these simple fixes so great video. The wheel sometimes stands up when you drive on the sidewall so place a block of wood under the other side of the opposite sidewall. This helps push the other side bead into the mid groove at the same time so both beads can break together. Tyre higher so drive on over a ramp board. If the tyre is tight on the bead then deflate and spray detergent water in thru the valve stem to lube the bead from the back
That's a great idea. After years of doing this as a young man, my Dad told me to do that. He laughed when I complained about the other side if the tire coming up.
That's a brilliant tip for breaking the bead! The spare tire on my Mazda MPV hangs under chassis and the bead was rusty, full of gravel, and leaking like a sieve. Your video helped me get the spare back in good shape before a holiday road trip. Thanks!
Glad we could help my friend! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your results, we truly appreciate it, hope you have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
I can always count on good old Lester to send me home with at least one slow leaker. Now i know why. Heaven forbid the dealer should take the time from their "sudden service" to clean up the rim prior to mounting a tire! Thanks Mike!
LOL, we are well aware of Lester the tire repair man, he gets paid $2.50 an hour and could care less about your tire holding air. :) Thanks for watching and commenting Steve, we appreciate it my friend, hope you have a great week. mad Mike the hammer SPC
sweet project cars This has too be the best, & my go to car chanel. I love the old school methods and the fun corny banta. It's really nice to have a chanel that fixes things instead of just going to a store and get a new part. Just want to say thank you for all the videos you share with us all. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the video! @6:00 - When you say 99%, you mean 99% iso alcohol right? @7:44 - Just wondering if you only need to do bead sealer on one side or did you do the other side off camera?
Please re-watch the video and once you detect where the leak is that is the only side you need to do but if you are taking off the wheel, do both sides. The product is this amzn.to/3wIDQHd Thanks for watching, have a great day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Thanks. That was informative. Got my tire finally fixed today (I HOPE!!) they told me it was corrosion and they sealed it so I was wondering what that meant and was researching what was done. They also told me if it still leaks it'll cost $150 to smooth out the wheel and maybe I need a new tire!
People who can do this will I'm sure. But the vast majority probably have never ever done any work on their own vehicles and therefore this is over their heads. Thumbs Up for the great video...
Well, Gary, there's always hope, that's why we share our knowledge for those that enjoy doing their own car repairs and those that may want to try. Thank you for watching, hope you have a great evening. mad Mike the hammer SPC
My brother n law has been an Amsoil dealer for 10 years and claims it is the best stuff out there. My cars are to old and the seals slow leak synthetic oil. I have been running Walmart oil for years with no troubles. Proper maintenance and 3K mile oil changes make a big difference too.
Amsoil is the same as every other oil that comes from the refinery it came from, they come from one big barrel, then stop the line and change kind of bottle, ie company bottle, and start up again, i worked at a refinery,
awesome video. have this issue with a van for over a year now. just been too lazy to fix it myself. Looks like mine is leaking at the rims as well tested it with soap :/ sigh. looks like I'll be heading to the auto shop soon and trying this out! Thanks!
My dads 2023 Silverado , had a leak i couldnt find, it would leak upto 30 and not leak , I tried soap water, changing valve stem etc, my dad takes the truck to the dealership, they recommended a new tire , dad approves after $490 got new tire. I told my dad to bring the old tire home, i forgot about reseating the bead, so i removed a good tire from his truck , took it to a tire shop had them swap with the tire that was replaced with new. Told to tire shop to check for leaks, they said no leak , Installed it, No issues. Chevy Dealer was a Chief and most of them are. Thanks for the tip
THANKS again for all your informative videos. I would add that you need a fairly robust air compressor that has enough volume/pressure to start the bead to seal on the rim. I would also recommend leaving the valve core out until the bead is fully seated and then screwing it in as it will allow much more air to flow through the valve stem. It can be easily installed with the air escaping out of the stem or you can let all of the air out once the bead has fully seated.
@@SweetProjectCars you said to share what I thought was the best oil I've always had really good luck with Valvoline. I love your Channel you guys come up with some very innovative ideas and I thank you for that.
Great video, Sweet Projects Cars! I have been looking for an easy way to break the bead on my 2004 Denali tires, so I can replace the Autel 315MHz MX-Sensor Wireless Programmable Universal TPMS Sensor on each tire. This will do the trick. Saved me all kinds of money on tools I didn't need. Many thanks!
I put motul 15w50 in my yamaha. Seems to work well. Also great job on the video my dude, I've been having this issue, 2 days and my tire is flat, the tire shop guys keep telling me to get a tube in there or get a new rim. Gonna try this since my rim isn't bent but she's a little old so there must be rust and gunk on the bead after 10 years of road use. Thanks once again
Little update, the rear rim is doing well with the gunk cleaning, havent had to put in air in a month. The front though is not, it's got a bunch of little bends along the rim and is either gonna need replacing or a tube. 1/2 is not so bad though. Thanks for the video bud
My hydraulic wood splitter does double duty ad a bead breaking tool. All ya need is a couple of bits of 2x4 and puting the splitter upright makes it easyer.
Using jack and vehicle works to break the bead but an old fashion hand tool works well too! Used that method for years as most truck tires would not fit on the car tire machine. But then again that was over 50-years ago.
If you haven't got a supa--dupa-hi-pressure air line you can remake the bead by looping a noose of 1/2 inch rope around the tread. Stick a pry bar in between rope and tire and twist. As the rope corkscrews up it'll squeeze the tread down and the walls will go out then pump like crazy. If you haven't got any bead sealer then once you've reinflated the wheel run a bead of clear, flexible silicone from a caulking gun around the joint and smooth off with a wet finger. Did this on my daughter's car as a "temporary" fix. Three years later when she went in to get new tires it was still holding!
Castrol gtx conventional for the old dogs and synthetic blend for newer. Been using gtx since 1979 and never had an oil related problem and I'm not afraid to max the rpms rather it be the v8's or the single cylinder motorcycles. Most oil no days will be fine for the common driver as long as the api and grade factors are correct for your engine. Thanks for reading.
Awesome idea. And save you at least 50 bucks that’s about what they charge you to do this at my local shop.. but of course they take the tire off, clean it and paint it with some liquid rubber stuff that makes a nice smooth seal against your tire.
Need to do this on my wheels as they drop from 36psi down to 10psi overnight. Gets really annoying pumping my tyres every day from nearly flat since a year ago.
Give it a shot, sounds like you have nothing to lose, that I'm sure is annoying to have to inflate your tires every day :( Thanks for watching and sharing, have a great day and all the best on your project my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
I work at a tire station cost $4 on/off vehicle $10 for rim cleaning $3 valve stem $8 plug $12 patch Usually not to expensive but I agree most shops are out to make $$$ and don't use mounting compound to prevent the bead corrosion👀
Glad to help John! Welcome from the UK, we really appreciate the view and comment my friend, hope you have a fantastic weekend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Not bad! $10.50 to fix the tire. (that's $10 for the motivational 6 pack and $0.50 for the sand paper) But hey, that's truly backyard mechanics at it's best!!! SWEET!!
Back in the 80's. Ford was having a slow leak problem on Mustangs with alloy wheels. Ford actually recalled them and sprayed the area where the tire mounts with a special sealant.
Hi. Is this applicable to Alloy wheels. Tyre shop said mine was leaking because of corrosion. They wire brushed it and bead sealed. Still leaking. Do I get wheel reconditioned or do it myself with more care. ? Lacquer needed? Thanks
Hello colin uk, this can be done to any style rims. Follow the video, you can do it! Thank you for watching, have a great day and all the best on your project my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Thank you very much Sahbi! Welcome Denmark, my wife's family is from Denmark, she's 3rd generation American. Appreciate the view and comment, have a great weekend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
i'm 68 live in minnesota dealing with this problem all my life, i bought a manual tire changer and a sand blaster, i remove the tire and wire brush the area of the tire that seals, clean the inside of the tire, sand blast the area of the rim that seals, clean, and paint with rust-oleum, let cure overnight and remount, now it is worry free.
I used a chunky socket the long way to make room for my hand. When I moved the socket, I used tape on the rim to mark where I had been. After 360 degrees, I was done.
Great tips!!!! I use this same method but with steel wool and soapy water, then blow clean and wipe dry! Ive never tried bead sealer! Still works great without as you stated! Thx
All certified oils work the same as long as they're changed timely. The fact someone HAS "an oil" is a good sign that they do, leading them to shift credit for long engine life to the oil instead of their good habits.
I change my oil religiously every 3,000 miles. As long as it has the approved seal on it.Consistency is the key.I usually use Wal-Mart super tech brand and STP oil treatment.
Love the tip to break the bead loose. I've used a bummer jack under the edge of our house in the old days. Put the lifting lip on the house and the foot on the tire and Jack until it breaks. That's back when tire shops were hard to find, cars had bumper jacks and houses were above the ground on piers. Been a very long time ago. This is so much easier! Did I miss you say to mark the tire so if it slips on the rim you can reline it up so the tire will still be balanced?
I enjoy watching your videos. I put clearcoat ceramic on my front bumper and hood to protect it from small rocks and bugs but one side of my hood looks very hazy and rough. I applied the ceramic and wiped it off to soon. How is the best way to remove the ceramic clear coat without damaging the paint?? I hope you can help me and thank you!
john landwehr the only way it will look rough and hazy is if it was done in the sun or not wiped off at the correct time if you used the coating we use and that happened all you need to do is polish it with mothers by hand and you will be good to go.
Well David, I would be making sure that they stand behind their poor work my friend. Sorry to hear that. Thank you for watching and sharing, hope you have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
the absolute worst offenders for rim corrosion have got to be any Chrysler/Dodge alloy (especially the 18-20" truck variety). I'm not sure what's in that alloy that corrodes more than anything else on the planet but grinding/bead sealing seems to be the only fix). The alloy stems on the pressure monitors are made of the same junk it seems. Thanks for the great videos!

Scott thank you, my friend, we try hard to share stuff that is actual relief type fixes
Do this yourself "If no tire places are open".
Let's just be real. We are doing this ourselves because we don't want to pay $20 for something we can do ourselves. Maybe we enjoy doing it ourselves. Maybe we don't have $20.
you got it some people just like DIY
@@SweetProjectCars After the apocalypse we will be the only ones still driving our cars
Doing it ourself cause the tire shops have a bad turn over rate , so every time its a new guy learning on your dime
It cost me 42 bucks💸 2 weeks after" I bought new tires on my little f -150 .. 900 dollar tires ...
I love these simple fixes so great video. The wheel sometimes stands up when you drive on the sidewall so place a block of wood under the other side of the opposite sidewall. This helps push the other side bead into the mid groove at the same time so both beads can break together. Tyre higher so drive on over a ramp board. If the tyre is tight on the bead then deflate and spray detergent water in thru the valve stem to lube the bead from the back
Thank you very much Shane! Have a great day, thanks for watching and sharing. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Seems like you always read my mind, My tires has some sort of leak as I have to pump air once a week, seems like you found the culprit. Thanks so much
Don't forget to check the tread area for nails/screws. That's the cause of your slow leaks 99% of the time.
superque4 you are correct thats why you spray the entire tire down with warm soapy water
Thanks for another great and helpful video!! Nice, easy repair that almost anyone can do.
Best oil is fresh oil.
Buy certified oil and change it regularly and you'll be fine.
That's the big thing. You know it's done right and another bennie is it could save you some change as well. Great Vids Man!!
You got that right Brian! Thank you for watching and for the comment, we really appreciate it, have a great day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Excellent vid. Just don't put bead seal on a bicycle tire. 😉
Great point, hence the reason we did this on a car tire :) Thanks for watching and commenting Jack, have a great day my friend. mad Mike
sweet project cars This has too be the best, & my go to car chanel. I love the old school methods and the fun corny banta. It's really nice to have a chanel that fixes things instead of just going to a store and get a new part. Just want to say thank you for all the videos you share with us all. 👍👍👍👍
Cassié J Vance thank you very much my friend that means a lot to us
Thanks for the video!
Just used this vid to reset the bead on my CRV. Thanks bud!
Glad we could help! Thanks for watching and sharing, have a great day. mad Mike
Thanks. That was informative. Got my tire finally fixed today (I HOPE!!) they told me it was corrosion and they sealed it so I was wondering what that meant and was researching what was done. They also told me if it still leaks it'll cost $150 to smooth out the wheel and maybe I need a new tire!
Thank you very much for watching and sharing. Hope you have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
This is the best video of how to fix leaks
Thank you very much Franklin, we truly appreciate the view and generous comment, hope you have a fantastic week my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Amsoil is the same as every other oil that comes from the refinery it came from, they come from one big barrel, then stop the line and change kind of bottle, ie company bottle, and start up again, i worked at a refinery,
I have run across this several times as well, great video.
Thanks for watching Shane, we appreciate it my friend! Hope your day is the best. mad Mike the hammer SPC
awesome video. have this issue with a van for over a year now. just been too lazy to fix it myself. Looks like mine is leaking at the rims as well tested it with soap :/ sigh. looks like I'll be heading to the auto shop soon and trying this out! Thanks!

bead sealer is SWEET the trick to seal the bead and it does not make the tire any harder to get off
My dads 2023 Silverado , had a leak i couldnt find, it would leak upto 30 and not leak , I tried soap water, changing valve stem etc, my dad takes the truck to the dealership, they recommended a new tire , dad approves after $490 got new tire.
I’m gonna do mine this week
Awesome! Thanks for watching and sharing, have a great day and all the best on your project my friend. mad Mike
J B they seal right back up if the job is done the same day

Thank you for watching and sharing! Glad to have you here with us. Have a great day, and good luck on your project. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Little update, the rear rim is doing well with the gunk cleaning, havent had to put in air in a month. The front though is not, it's got a bunch of little bends along the rim and is either gonna need replacing or a tube. 1/2 is not so bad though. Thanks for the video bud
Great video I’m a complete novice with a tyre that won’t inflate at all
Thank you James, appreciate your view and comment. Good luck on your tire project my friend. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
I love your technic on breaking the bead
My hydraulic wood splitter does double duty ad a bead breaking tool. All ya need is a couple of bits of 2x4 and puting the splitter upright makes it easyer.
Thanks for watching and sharing Michael. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Using jack and vehicle works to break the bead but an old fashion hand tool works well too! Used that method for years as most truck tires would not fit on the car tire machine. But then again that was over 50-years ago.
Great vid...I use my one my large wood working clamp....to squeeze tire..
Good stuff! Thanks for watching and sharing roadwarrior! Hope you have a fantastic day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Thanks for watching and sharing Jeffrey. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Thank you for watching and sharing Ray, we really appreciate it my friend. Hope you have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
Awesome idea. And save you at least 50 bucks that’s about what they charge you to do this at my local shop.. but of course they take the tire off, clean it and paint it with some liquid rubber stuff that makes a nice smooth seal against your tire.
Glad to help rotfan77! Thanks for the view and comment, have a great day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
I work at a tire station
cost $4 on/off vehicle
$10 for rim cleaning
$3 valve stem
$8 plug
$12 patch
Usually not to expensive but I agree most shops are out to make $$$ and don't use mounting compound to prevent the bead corrosion👀
Thanks Mate, much appreciated! (from Monmouthshire Wales UK)

Very good very good information and good explanation thank you

Thank you for watching, have a great day and all the best on your project my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC

i'm 68 live in minnesota dealing with this problem all my life, i bought a manual tire changer and a sand blaster, i remove the tire and wire brush the area of the tire that seals, clean the inside of the tire, sand blast the area of the rim that seals, clean, and paint with rust-oleum, let cure overnight and remount, now it is worry free.

Try putting a 2 x 4 between the bead and the rim to give more room to sand bead. Dan
I used a chunky socket the long way to make room for my hand. When I moved the socket, I used tape on the rim to mark where I had been. After 360 degrees, I was done.
Wow that’s super cool - thanks for sharing

I think most of the oils are going to be incredibly close (provided they are of the same type, i.e.synthetic).
I just put a coat of rustoleum for bead sealer , Inflate tire while paint is still wet. I finally got my tractor tires to stop leaking
Thanks for watching and sharing Bob. Have a great weekend. mad Mike the hammer SPC
THANK-YOU VERY MUCH SIR, YOUR A TRUE GENTLEMEN !!

Great idea

the absolute worst offenders for rim corrosion have got to be any Chrysler/Dodge alloy (especially the 18-20" truck variety). I'm not sure what's in that alloy that corrodes more than anything else on the planet but grinding/bead sealing seems to be the only fix). The alloy stems on the pressure monitors are made of the same junk it seems. Thanks for the great videos!
