When you changed the ear tips from the memory foam one to the silicone type, you have reduced the ANC capability of the xm4. And you also changed the airpod pro's into memory foam ones, which enhanced ANC capability. So your ANC experienced is totally off, compared to those who use the standard ear tips for both. Even then, the xm4 still won out in ANC capability for you. That comes to show how good the ANC for the sony's is.
The latest airpod software update reduced ANC for me and has broken seamless connectivity on non-apple devices for me.. Beginning to have buyers remorse.
Bought the XM4 after losing one of my airpod pros. Holy crap!! You have to try these! I am blown away by these Sony buds. If Sony continues to make buds like these, I will never use anything else. Very impressed.
Gotta be honest, if your priority when buying earbuds is getting good sound, I wouldn’t really recommend either of these. I love my AirPods Pro, and I think that these new Sony buds are fantastic! But, the sound quality is… not ideal. But really, who cares? You buy these things for the tech and convenience, after all!
audiophile... hah? HAAA? any TWS can be beat by BLON03 with silver balance cable which cost only 50 usd. Audiophile also need to have high sample rate which can only be achieved by cable connection. Dude....
@@pelilin2519 don't forget adding on new tips, a player that supports balanced, and dealing with BLONs poor comfort issues. Also you can get a high sample rate with TWS, not as high as with a cable but not high enough for BLONs to take full advantage of it anyways
One of the best reviews I've seen on wireless earphones. Great information. I really appreciate how it didn't sound like you were trying to be cool or over-animated.
Airpods Pro, they kept falling out. However once I replaced the tips with rubber ones, they are awesome. New software update has improved stereo sound. Noise cancelling however is still poor, and transparency option just boosts background noise.
In my opinion, even SONY's last-gen model, the Sony WF-1000XM3, is superior to the Apple AirPods Pro. For smartphone products, you have the two main competitors, Apple and Samsung. In the meantime, SONY is always doing their own thing in the background. They don't care about all of the hype and fanfare. They just do it, and they do it exceptionally well. The Sony WF-1000XM3 is amazing. I am completely blown away. I could never go back to Apple AirPods. No shame in SONY's game! It is what it is. That being said, I can only imagine that the Sony WF-1000XM4 is that much better and even more of a rival for Apple.
Wow…the comparison of the microphones using iOS versus Android is something I hadn’t even considered. I use my XM4s almost exclusively with my iOS devices. However, hearing the difference with the microphones using Android is nice to be aware of. It also seems like the Airpods have the opposite experience, such that they’re not as clear on Android. Interesting.
Strokes/folks and all that. But Androids audio codec is WAY more suited for high quality audio listening. iPhones more and more become a product for noone every year. At this point the only reason to pick one over an Android is preference. Actual benefits and ease of use are few and far between.
I bought the xm4 and i am super happy with it, soundwise, battery life, anc, ambient, voice call, features, a good buy overall. Never tried the airpods tho since i don't have an iphone and i think it only works best for apple products. I considered xm3 before but because of the size and price at that time i opted to buy jabra elite 75t active, a very decent pair for its price.
Hi there .. how comfortable is xm4 on ear? Can we use it for cycling ..I have used bose all my life and just love how it fits in ear. Please let me know your. Thanks
I have watched a bunch of earbuds reviews on RUclips the last week, and this is by far, the best. Comprehensive, paying attention to details, pedagogical and entertaining. Well done! And you convinced me to go for the XM4. I was also considering earbuds from Sennheiser and Technics before I watched this review.
Crazy to think how far Wireless Earbuds have come in such a short time. I am curious now, is there any more room for Audio Quality to get better over Bluetooth? Or is there another form of wireless communication that provides better sound in the works?
I think bluetooth will continue to advance and sound will actually surpass the average wired listening scenario (smartphone dac) with imoroved dacs with less interference from electronics inside the phone. My issue is comfort/ergonomics and repairability. Sony’s suck (for me) when it comes to fitting my ears, and apples suck for repairability (surprise surprise). Senheisers suck for features and holding a reliable connection, and bose is behind by a little bit for sound quality. Still lots of room for improvement but it’s cool seeing the progress that’s been made.
well, big chip manufacturers have to release better bluetooth infrastructure as their is only so much an earbud producer can make something to reduce latency and other bluetooth drawbacks. For example, wireless gaming mice have dongle transponders that relay wifi (usually a standard 2.4 Ghz connection) to make latency almost the same as a wired one. A solution to the earbud problem would be to use wifi connection, as wifi has been more developed and faster. However, bluetooth has been making its strides to improving connection and making a wireless world closer to reality, which is going to be exciting.
Excellent review, we actually have both and I think of them exactly the same way. The sound quality on the Sony earbuds is just outstanding, but the comfort isn't the best. If they were more comfortable I would 100% choose them over the Airpods, but for the moment it is a tie for me.
@@mojamoja2840 I was using my MDRXB50APB eartips, you can also get third party tips from comply (called truegrip for Sony true wireless) or buy any of the third party silicone tips designed for Sony headphones. I would be careful getting third party as you’d have to consider fitting into the case too since I don not know what size you are getting.
Great summary Lexy!! 👍 I've been using the WH1000XM3's for 2 yrs now they have been the best for me so far. Better than Bose, Sennheiser, and Jabra's I've used in the past. The bud fit could be better and I've switched between the silicone and memory foam tips with memory foam feeling more comfortable for long term wear (i.e. 2 hrs continuous use). However, they don't stay in long enough and I have 'medium' sized ear canals. If you're a long distance runner or walker, then the buds will work themselves loose and you have to keep pushing them back in every 15-20 mins. Overall, the M3's have been a fairly reliable daily driver but there's been a nagging issue of Bluetooth connectivity loss. I've seen a lot of complaints posted about this. Sony has finally released a firmware upgrade (which doesn't impact audio quality at all) for the XM3's ... BUT I'm still experiencing an occasional disconnect/reconnect issue that randomly occurs. Since my smartphone uses a Bluetooth 5.1 chip, I won't be able to take advantage of the BIG improvement coming with v5.2 regarding with the release of LE Audio which should translate into even higher quality sound sound transfers (i.e. streaming Amazon UHD music) while consuming LESS power. That should translate into even better battery delivery and audio performance with the XM4s. Initially, I was very disappointed with the call quality based on feedback from the person on the other end ... but after figuring out Sony's app and tinkering with settings, I think the ANC does a fair enough job and listening transparency is good (especially when walking the dog). WRT the M4's, I'm intrigued about their more vivid soundstage along with additional audio codecs supported in this new iteration. Also the form factor tempts me to give them a try. Hard to tell if they jut out from the ear canals ... don't care for the Frankenstein bolt look. But, my hesitance in shelling out another $250 causes me to wait for some 'incentive' offer by Best Buy or even Amazon. I'll take Sony any day over Apple because I've never cared for Apple's 'closed architecture' approach to their technology and, IMHO, their products are often overhyped. For me, the long term value proposition with Sony's wireless buds influence my buying decision. Look forward to trying them out in the new year sometime.
@@godzoo18 I DID purchase the XM4's in January and they are simply FANTASTIC sounding!! They offer a SIGNIFICANT improvement in the bass and overall soundstage from the previous gen (which I handed down to my daughter and she enjoys them). The XM4's also fit much more comfortable and I don't worry about them slipping out as easily as the XM3's. This is definitely worth the wait and I couldn't be happier when I'm out on my walks/runs. Cheers!!
Thank you for talking about size for small ears! I've been investigating and I couldn't find anyone that mentions sizing but you. This is a deal-breaker for me because I always struggle.
Just got the XM4 and dayumnnnnn! This things are the best. I have never used apple’s earpods, but I doubt they gonna have the best sound out there. Sony are big but im sure they have better internals cuz the sound is unbelievable. Thanks Sony
I tried my friend's airpods pros, and they sounded umm dull or flat. I compared it to my wf 1000xm3 and my xm3 just sounded livelier or fun. That's how i would describe it.
@@husnainmushtaq9969 i have not used those and my xm4 have started to have problems. It disconnects and turn off randomly. I gonna have to take them back to best buy now
Yes! I already purchased them but going to look for other smaller buds. It fits if I squeeze the tips but it’s annoying to have to pinch every time. I do like everything else though so I don’t want to return.
@@vegahw Actually, foam tips are supposed to be squeezed when inserted, it's not really the tips nor the ears fault in that, that's just how they work.
The frustration with switching between devices is the main reason I returned the Sony XM4s and you are one of the only reviewers that made that point clear! Although I did have to turn off Apple's constant insistence of automatically switching between my iphone, mac and tv, but for me, the ease of connecting is worth the drop in audio quality.
I only have one question before convert from AirPods Pro to XM4. I’m a cyclist, so wind noise reduction matters a lot, AirPods Pro is perfect dealing with it, I wonder if XM4 is the same when the wind noise reduction is on?
Thanks Lexy, I have the XM4 Earphones and the NC is great. Sony's NC is lauded as the best out there, so it is no surprise to me that these have superior performance while offering more battery life, it's proof that they're simply more optimized.
I hope that ur kidding because for me i cant even feel the difference between having the anc on or off wich is so big dissapointment for me because i bought these because of all the reviews saying that the anc is so incredible... its just absolutely bs huh i feel so scammed for these (especially because of the high price tag)
@@idk-vx9fz I got mine few days ago and at first I wasnt crazy about the anc either because i thought it was going to be mindblowing and then when i put them in i could still hear the tv and stuff. However anc always works best with consistent frequencies so later when i was in a car and i turned anc on my jaw literally dropped be because of how silent it became. So at the end of the day, yes their anc is worse than that of the big XM4s, but for the earbud size its defenitely amazing (and apperently better than apples)
@@idk-vx9fz that sounds more like a Malefunktion to me, maybe you got a broken pair? Or maybe you turn the dial to 20 in the Sony app, meaning the anc is set to very low
Wf xm3, actually had better ANC than these but the sound quality suffered because so many frequencies had to be added to the music to cancel out the noise, these still work great, and foam eartips also help alot to passively block sound but if you only care about anc then the previous version is still the better, although none comes close to heapdphone levels anc.
You're putting in the Xm4s wrong in, they are made out of memory foam, so you should compress them first by squeezing them and then fit them into your ears making them expand, that creates a better seal
The S size is not small enough, even when compressing the foam to insert which is standard practice. Some people like me have tiny ear canals! Wish Sony made an XS with the foam tips, that would have been ideal
I picked up the AirPods Pro before I really knew about the Sony’s but honestly I can’t complain about them… with the volume turned to about 80% they honestly sound really good and have surprising bass for their size. I can literally feel the bass of some songs thumping in my ears. Music is VERY balanced and it sounds like it should. The fit is great as well. I kind of twist them into my ears in a downward swooping motion and then push the backs in. Gives a great seal! The sound isolation alone is great. I drive a box truck at work and they cancel out about 80% of the engine noise just with the sound isolation and man it’s nice! Transparency mode is also freaking awesome and I use it every day. It allows me to keep them in my ears and work and still talk to customers. The ANC, to me, is ok… it’s honestly not too much more than the sound isolation provides. If I receive a call and the engine gets especially loud while I’m on the freeway ANC is nice for that. Battery life is eh… I get about 4 to 4 1/2 hours off a charge. But it’s fine. Some days I do have ear fatigue so longer battery life really wouldn’t matter that much. Overall, for the $200 I paid, the AirPods Pro are really good earbuds and I don’t think I could work without them and maintain my sanity lmao… Good review 🤘🏻
returning the airpod 3s tomorrow and getting the xm4s after noticeably hearing how their a well rounded product and not a hyped up and going for the brand
If you really care for sound quality then go for the XM4s. The sound quality on the Airpods Pro is meh but for me switching between my iPhone, iPad Mini, and Macbook over and over and my Pods not missing a beat is priceless. I would recommend the Sony anytime of the day for someone who doesn’t own both. But if you are heavily invested in the Apple Ecosystem then definitely go for the Airpods Pro, or even the upcoming Gen 3 Airpods.
@@rover5058 Airpods don't have much bass IMO, I use Sony Xb-700 and I have tried my friend's airpods pro. So I can say that Sony 100$ Xb-700 is much better than Airpods pro So, I would say that Sony headphones are better than Airpods series
Kind of odd removing the noise isolating ear buds. Your not supposed to "ram them in" like silicon buds, you roll them small the let them expand thus clamping themselves to your ear canal. They are always far superior for sound isolation which make sense on anc phones. Removing them is like removing sports wheels from a ferrari. Apart from that technical fail, the review was good, thx.
Quick tip: you are supposed to squish the memory foam tips of the sony earbuds before puttung them in. They will adjust in your ear after 30 seconds or so.
I just bought these sony earbuds yesterday. 6/4/2022. My left airpod pro stopped working so i went with somthing different. Glad i chose these sonys. They are amazing. I like that you can choose different equalizers or create your own custom one.
I'm tired of splashing out for apple's products. It's either Sony or Samsung. My wife has a pair of the apple ones, we've had them serviced and still one of them don't charge properly. Love the reviews. I think you hit the review out of the park!
I would buy the AirPods, but I hate Apple as a company. That being said, the Sony's are so much more expensive. I did however, find them refurb on eBay for $169. So I'm going with that. Also, they come with a 2 year warranty.
YAY IT"S LEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FANTASTIC review as always from one of the BEST reviewers out there in my opinion. As for which I would personally prefer, It would be the XM4's. For a couple reasons actually. Firstly, well it's Sony and I absolutely LOVE Sony products. And secondly it would complement their bigger brother headphones (the WH-1000XM4 of course, which I do have as well) for when I didn't feel like taking the headphones. And also because in my opinion, I don't really like the AirPods (to each their own though).
I think the biggest issue for Sony is its integration into the Apple environment. If they could improve their software integration into all Apple devices….. that would really make a difference for me… So how to make the Sonys perfect on the next update (1) make software that seamlessly integrates them into both android and Apple environments. (2) reduce the overall size (3) continue to improve the noise cancellation intelligence. (4) make case smaller and tougher. Keep long battery life.
Apple is to blame for integration, not Sony. It's already the best they can do. And Apple wouldn't let other brands have great integration on their devices since they would sell less of their own products.
As a small eared person this is a tough fit coming from the galaxy buds+ that fit so nicely in my ears. I’m going to test them in the gym this week and if they don’t stay in unfortunately i gotta return them. But the ANC and sound is gorgeous so far.
@@hailsatyr I ended up keeping it, but i should have returned it. I’m constantly adjusting them. I’m trying to see if some xs ear tips will work for me though. Great earbuds overall but I wouldn’t recommend them if you have smaller ears.
Hi I know it's been a year but have you found any in-ear wireless buds that work for you? I have *tiny* ears lol so quite nervous about spending £££ on earbuds and them not fitting at all
@@heather7320 Hah yeah the m4’s were actually a terrible fit. I ended up going with the beats fit pro. They have a wing tip which helps them stay in your ears, pretty good noise cancellation, and they have iOS integration. They pass the shake test and I can use them to play sports. I’d recommend them.
@@MrRodrigo1250 Oh, why dont you just compare it to Playstation naming? Compare it to other audio products. Sony & Audio Technica have the similar naming because they have ton of audio products since mid twentieth century. Meanwhile Samsung & Apple?
As usual, I loved the thoroughness of your review. My big problem with AirPods is that they fall out-not working out just walking around. It would be nice to see some comparisons on that issue.
Loved the Sony’s… BUT, I had to return it for the same reason you mentioned - the FIT. I was in pain after 30 minutes. I tried the smallest tips but the ANC and the sound were compromised. It was confirmed via the fit test in the app. Lexy… did you stick with the XM3 tips? If so, are there setbacks when it comes to ANC and sound? Thanks.
Damn I'm also interested in buying them, but I'm wondering about the fit and kinda wanted to ask if they fit to tightly on you depending on your ears, I have big ears and I'm scared they'll just plop out of my ears lol or if they be nicely fit.
@@IshFallen - it really depends on your ear. Most earbuds fit well with my ears but not the Sony’s. At one point it hurt so bad that I had no choice but to take it off… and when I did, my ears had dent on the skin. Weird. I was using the medium tips. I already did the squeeze before putting them on but to no avail. It was disappointing. I hope it fits well on your ears since they are great sounding buds.
I have the wf 1000xm3, and i tried to use the foam tips, the foam tips blocks a little more noise than the silicon but not that much, but the silicon fits me better and more comfortable than the foam tips
@@axelvdp1 Actually I have replaced my pods maybe 3 times by apple and finally decided to replace them with better buds because I am an android user as well. I faced some problems like sometimes the mic does not work until we pair them again. But man I miss airpods pro because after using sony wf-1000xm4 I can say the sound is better but you get sore ears and there is boom boom sound. if you ask me about ANC, I would say with bigger tips Airpods pro were better than sony. Thats my opinion
I thought my airpod pro gone wrong after getting some zaps in the left so I got xm4 and it just got delivered about 2 hours ago. If the experience with the airpod was a heavy boxer keep punching your ear canals and drums, xm4 just puts a gentle smile on my face. You would feel like you feel the bass in your brain rather than the drums. I feel more comfortable with xm4 because it kinda hangs in the air once the in-ear lands on your canal. airpod sits on your ear and you can feel a bit of stress on the ear.
I own both and here are my 2 cents: Airpods are more comfortable than the Sony's, not saying the Sony's are uncomfortable but just not as good as the airpods. Sony's way better sound and better noice cancelling in my opinion but unless you're an audiophile (in which case you wouldn't go wireless anyways) both will serve you well but the Sony's are better. The airpods have given me a lot of headaches over time tho, I have owned both since launch and the airpods often fail to turn on or off and there sometimes is some weird bug where they sound really weird and you just have to reboot them. Both have been tested on an OnePlus 7 Pro for daily use but keep in mind that the airpods are roughly a year older by now so I can't speak on the long term quality of the Sony's.
@@YesNo-xc2dr assuming you own an android and price isn't a factor (airpods are older thus probably cheaper) I would go with the Sony's. They take some getting used to but are in my opinion the better option. Also this is personal but I love the kinda bronze/white/idk what colour it is of the sony's
The thing that does my head in, is the price of these things. A$389.00 in Australia for the Sony, A$299 for the Apple …seriously these buds should be half the price.
I bought the Sony headphones and returned them quickly. I like some of the software but the comfort wasn’t right. I have the Bose QC and they’re lacking some software ability but the comfort is great.
How comfortable is SONY in ear? Does it fit in ear? I live ear clip on bose, I am planning to switch to sony but skeptical if this will fall while running or cycling.
Can I use all options thru taps and touches? like play/stop, next/prev, volume +/-, NC on/off, ambient sound so for example: play/stop - tap left next - 2 tap left prev - 3 tap left volume up/down - long press left / right NC on/off - 3 tap right ambient sound - 2 tap right
I had the Wf100Xm3 ear buds with my iPhone 11 but I found the connectivity to be awful and the call quality was really bad. Do you know if the connectivity is better with these versions?
I’ve had every Sony NC earbuds (from wired to Bluetooth) since they first came out with them. In my opinion the M3, with adjustments, were more stable than the M4 I have now. I gave my M3s to my sister. I regret it. Can’t ask for it back. Currently waiting for the M5s to come out. Btw, I’ve had Bose ones too.
I’ve just bought the pros, and I like them I don’t regret buying them they’re nice £200/from John Lewis....but I was thinking lightning socket.? this’ll be type c on the next generation I think..but I needed them now so I’ll chew on the gristle if type c charging happens. And the pro2 will be top dollar price,so I’ve avoided that hit..
@@Al13n1nV8D3R Never had that thought, even if we'd take these headphones as an example, it'd work the same as on Android, with Airpods you'd just get a little better experience. Also that ecosystem thing is only logical to do from any company perspective.
@@Thatsmantas But as you may have seen in the market not every company does this ecosystem business model. If what your saying is correct every single company would logically have their own ecosystem, which is not true at all. Alot of companies allow cross platform usage with full features across the board. Only those company who wants to limit its users and force them to stick with their products are the ones that do this. It all boils down to greed and its as simple as that. Apple is not looking out for their clients but only for their pocket books.
@@Al13n1nV8D3R Samsung certainly has an ecosystem, so Apple is not alone in that. The reason why every company doesn't do it, is vertical integration. It requires a company to take control of all parts of the supply chain, and to own enough patents while fending off copycats. I'm not saying any company is great at it, or that it's the way to go, but it's a competitive advantage that only a few companies at the top can have. AirPods work on Android, famously the iPod came to Windows. Apple has allowed cross-platform support before and currently while still maintaining an ecosystem.
@@Thatsmantas I think the best option for Android users is the Huawei Freebuds Pro which have a true multipoint (which works with all platforms) a little better sound than the Airpods-Pro, better microphones in phone call, equivalent active noise reduction, transparency mode slightly worse than Airpods-Pro and cost $130 today.

Please let me know your.Thanks

I think apple is working on this
They've coudve made them even better there are Bluetooth technology's like aptx HD and aptx low Lowrancy Mode
50£ pair of wired earbuds with a dac perform better than 300£ wireless earbuds. Lmao
Xm4 are def worth it
Excellent review, we actually have both and I think of them exactly the same way. The sound quality on the Sony earbuds is just outstanding, but the comfort isn't the best. If they were more comfortable I would 100% choose them over the Airpods, but for the moment it is a tie for me.
Thanks for such a great comprehensive comparison Lexy. I can sense that you are an audiophile and your perspective truly hit home. Cheers.
I'd love to know how easy it is for the Sony ones to connect to iMac(2021), MacBook pro (2014)

Cheers!!

@@blaXkgh0st if you have tidel and enjoy music that offers 360 audio then the sonys are worth it.
You put the xm4s into your ears incorrectly. You are supposed to compress the memory foam before you put them in your ears and allow them to expand.
Thanks for the test, I choose for the Sony WF-1000XM4 in ear as well. Mainly because of the better sound and the battery life time.
@@hanfpeter4190 what i mean is that when i put the anc on i cant even feel the difference between having it on or off
@@idk-vx9fz that sounds more like a Malefunktion to me, maybe you got a broken pair?
It seems they both have their own advantage, it is still hard to make a decision after watching this video 😂
This is also a flex. She's showing us her music choices are exquisite.
Overall, for the $200 I paid, the AirPods Pro are really good earbuds and I don’t think I could work without them and maintain my sanity lmao…
Good review 🤘🏻
I tried putting them in my ears like you, changed everything. Thank you very much !
returning the airpod 3s tomorrow and getting the xm4s after noticeably hearing how their a well rounded product and not a hyped up and going for the brand
Wait for AirPods Pro 2…just make them sound at least as good as beats studio buds and you got a winner
What about the bass ? The bass in the Airpods Pros is underwhelming...is it better in the XM4s ?

Kind of odd removing the noise isolating ear buds. Your not supposed to "ram them in" like silicon buds, you roll them small the let them expand thus clamping themselves to your ear canal. They are always far superior for sound isolation which make sense on anc phones. Removing them is like removing sports wheels from a ferrari. Apart from that technical fail, the review was good, thx.

If they could improve their software integration into all Apple devices….. that would really make a difference for me…
So how to make the Sonys perfect on the next update (1) make software that seamlessly integrates them into both android and Apple environments.
Thanx… just upgraded. Can’t wait.

I feel more comfortable with xm4 because it kinda hangs in the air once the in-ear lands on your canal. airpod sits on your ear and you can feel a bit of stress on the ear.
I own both and here are my 2 cents:
Airpods are more comfortable than the Sony's, not saying the Sony's are uncomfortable but just not as good as the airpods.

Now Android users have a good option in my opinion, I think iOS users should stick to the Airpods. After all, we pay extra for the ecosystem :)
Or rather "stuck in the ecosystem". Apple products are a waste if you use Android or other OS's.

Just the AirPods might be a little more convenient perhaps
iPods Pro are just better.
@@barrywade8303 with an iOS or macOS device, they're more convenient yes
@@alvzcizzler you'll never be able to convince Apple stans that not everything Apple makes is the best.
If I hadn’t just got the Pros a month before these came out, and if they were the same price, I’d almost easily have chosen the Sony instead.
I always choose Sony for audio
In my case I didn't really get to pick one over the other. I pre-ordered the Xperia 1 Mark III recently and that just comes with those Sony earbuds. I wanted to check reviews and see how good they actually are and I've only heard exceptional reviews on them so far. I got some amazing headphones last year and I'm very curious how those stack up to these Sony ones. Either way, hey, they came with my phone FOR FREE. This will be the first time I've ever gotten actually GOOD headphones with the purchase of a phone. I'm excited, I can't wait for the package to show up! :)
All iPhones come with Air Pods Pro. Its great and also free.

@@Applecompuser They dont btw and iphone 12 and 13 dont come with any earbuds lol
I’ve been using AirPods Pro for 2 years now. One of the pods broke a few months ago and I’ve only been using one, which sadly I lost a few days ago. Now I need new ones, which do I go with?
