Hey Matt. This is your second video I am commenting on and today I have two things to say: 1. I deeply appreciate and respect the fact that the first thing you do is to thank people for watching your videos. Kind people like you are rare, I am afraid. 2. I received my 4 + duo yesterday and got help from your video to set it up. Thanks a lot! Keep up the great work that you do and, most importantly, ride safely! Cheers!
The advice to learn to ride first, then play with intercoms 2nd is amazing. Been riding for over 25 years, and this year when I finally got a Cardo I was completely shocked at how distracting it was to have someone else in my helmet with me. It took me a few days to correct the extra burden on my situational awareness. I wasn't prepared for this effect, nobody warned me.
Yup. I just got one, and then worse I also wore earplugs on top of it. I felt so disoriented; I couldn’t work the thing, the calls sound poorly, and I couldn’t hear the bike. I almost felt like I was riding drunk. Not a very pleasant first experience.
@@leprechaun3677 I wear earplugs with mine too. Learn to use it and pay attention to the road, and you'll love it in the end. I can't imagine not having it now, but the learning curve and initial distraction was striking.
I purchased a Freecom 4+ two pack for me and a buddy. Interestingly, his unit had no issues with the crackling interference and intermittent voice cutout, but my unit had symptoms exactly like you describe in your video. After lots of testing, swapping his unit for mine in our respective helmets, riding over the same route where my unit seemed to be acting up (thinking it might have been powerline interference), Finally, after a lot of back and forth with Cardo, got them to replace my unit. The new one works perfectly with no more crackling or voice cut outs during intercom use.
Hi Robin. Thanks for your comment. I've reached out to Cardo a couple. of times but heard nothing back. It's definitely better with the right settings. We've had the units for nearly 18 months so probably too late for a warranty replacement but I might try again...
@@TheDeepPlanet Hi Matthew, If it helps, I worked with Shelly at Cardo Support: support@cardosystems.com. She was very helpful and sympathetic and once I tried all of her suggestions and ran my own troubleshooting regimen she went to the powers that be and got a replacement approved. Good luck!
Hi Matt, Great video, I had missed all these setting, as they were not described in the manual I received or the Cardo Videos. I had trouble connecting the unit with my KTM 890 as the motorcycle connects with bluetooth. After many tries to connect between the motorcycle, Cardo4, and a Garmin Zumo I sent an email to customer support. This is what they sent back, just in case any other viewer has the same issue. (which worked for me) Thank you for contacting Cardo support. The best way to pair is to pair the phone to the motorcycle, but do not pair the phone directly to the Freecom. Then pair the Freecom to the headset pairing on the motorcycle using channel one phone pairing on the Freecom. Lastly pair the Freecom to the Garmin using the GPS pairing on the Freecom. Best regards, Cardo Systems Technical Support
Thanks for the information. Not fixed my similar issues yet so will keep trying. Currently I am feeling that my purchase of the 2 units has been a very expensive mistake - maybe my view will change. When they work, the sound is great but the missing of the beginning of sentences is unbearable. Sometimes the last couple of words get missed too for some reason. Once again, thanks for the starting point 👍
Hi NaN. Thanks fornyour comment.I agree. It's a very expensive thing to buy to not have work the way it should. I have had someone say that it could be a faulty unit. If its still under warranty, you should try to get it replaced. Good luck and ride safe! 😎
@@TheDeepPlanet Thank you, I got it working now! Just had to update my device & reset my music. Then turn intercom off & on again :) Also had an issue where it said “unavailable” when trying to use the intercom feature. I fixed this by disconnecting the mic from the device & reconnecting it. So if anyone else having the unavailable error, try unplugging your mic & pulling it back in. If that doesn’t work try connecting using the cardo APP.
After 20 years of on and off riding I got a cardo. Today it stopped playing music and its definitely a distraction messing with it while riding. Not good for newer riders.

Hi Rufus. Thanks for your comment. If you plan on using the unit mostly on your own, it's great. The main issues I have are that connectivity to other riders is poor. Sound quality is good and the voice commands are usable. It may be worth checking other options but I think all of these type of units have some kind of issue...

Hi Dr Craig. I would suggest swapping the mics around to check if it's a hardware issue. If not , check that you haven't got VOX turned on and mic sensitivity turned right down. Hopefully you're still covered by warranty if it's hardware... Cardo don't seem to have great after sales service though...
My wife and I use this Intercom, so we can chat, give directions and warn of hazards. If we don't say anything for 20=30 seconds the intercom turns off and I have to say Hey Cardo call intercom about 30 times during a ride. Very annoying! Is there a way to change that? I have called and e-mailed Cardo no answers.
Hi WretcLlikeMe. I'm sorry it's taking me so long to get back to you. To be honest I have been extremely busy over the past 6 months for various reasons. But what I think you need to do is make sure that you have got voice priority and not push-to-talk which can cause the Cardo to switc the sound off until you start speaking again. Audio can kind of drop in and out with this setting. Might need an updated video. 😉
I am contemplating purchasing one of these devices...but having noted all the vices in your earlier video, I am now somewhat apprehensive. One of my main aims was to utilise this bluetooth communicator linked to a navigator unit and be able to talk on the phone at the same time. Is this possible? Phone connection is a primary concern...how clearly are you able to hear and be heard when on a phone call? Signal cutting out at a distance less than 1/2 km using Bluetooth isn't an issue if phone call is made between riders and telstra support conference calls ie more than two people chatting. Look forward to your reply Matthew.
Hi gunga din. Thanks for your comments. I'll address your questions as best I can. The device works extremely well when connected to a phone. I recommend using earplugs (acoustic earplugs are even better) to help cut out the wind noise. While on a call, because your phone is close, the only thing that could impact the quality of your call would be your carrier's coverage. Making and receiving calls does use up the battery a bit quicker but I've found it lasts ages during normal use. I've not tried the upgraded version of the Cardo 4+ that uses the mesh technology. That might be an option if rider consider communication is important to you. I've made calls while riding and people usually don't even know that I'm on the bike. It also depends on how noisy your helmet is and whether you have a tall windscreen or not.
@@TheDeepPlanet Thanks for replying...so phone calls between riders is a viable option but clarity subject to wind noise; admittedly linking riders by phone call means the phones are tied up or locked down, but as long as there is phone connectivity riders could be miles apart but remain in communication. Just the other question... can one speak on the phone and still receive navigation directions say from a garmin mounted device. ie two devices both connected by bluetooth to the cardo 4?
Yes. To get that to work you'll need to play around with the intercom priority settings but it should work. I do have one question... do you ride a BMW?
Ok. There are forums that discuss some connectivity issues with the BMW GPS system. Might be worth having a look - one of the comments on one of my vids mentions it. You might be able to reach out to the person to see if they worked it out...

The Bluetooth audio mixing setting (being able to listen to your personal music while using the intercom) is the biggest feature and it also brings the biggest issue, for this video to be worth it's time it should've been covered.

@@nicheishler7718 hi. Thanks for your comment! I think this may be distortion caused by the limitations of the speakers. Try adjusting the equaliser of your music player to reduce bass or possibly may be caused by excessive treble. Try a flat or neutral sound profile and see if that helps.

My cardo just fell off middle highway never gonna see it again. why? because i toutched it wrong with my hand, wont recommend this version of the cardo. the release system is just too dangerous. Asked cardo if there was any way we could fix the issue even suggested getting a discount on just the cardo itself (would use m3 tape this time tho...) they said it was missuse and 100% my fault.
This happened to me recently, in March 2023- a week after I bought my Freedom 4. I stopped on a ride for a coffee, and as I walked into the cafe, somehow, I bumped the cardo against my leg or jacket, and it fell off. Luckily the person behind me saw it on the floor and picked it up. I followed the instructions and clicked the unit into the base station correctly. I was telling a friend who has a Sena unit, and he showed me the process to install or remove a Sena - it's much more secure and failsafe. The problem with my Freedom 4 is the little clip to lock it into position protrudes from the unit and can be easily bumped or caught on things. It's a terrible locking device design, and interestingly the latest Cardo unit is magnetised to stop it from falling off, which indicates to me that Cardo has found that people have been losing their units, and they have redesigned it to stop it from happening. The shop I bought it from claimed they had never heard of the problem.
Cardo is completely garbage. Amazing how you can make all this money to have nonstop paring issues and now a new unit and can't even pair the third unit.

Did you fix it ? I have the exact same use case and problem 😅
Hi frogeyedman. Still a lot of interruptions on the intercom. Have you tried the "intelligent notice cancelling" setting?
@@TheDeepPlanet Matthew, a 2016 r1200r bm.
Ok. There are forums that discuss some connectivity issues with the BMW GPS system. Might be worth having a look - one of the comments on one of my vids mentions it. You might be able to reach out to the person to see if they worked it out...
Aftrr updating my freecom 4+ to ver 3.2 firmware, I cannot use any "hey cardo" voice commands. Moreover i noticed that "natural voice operation" gone on my selection. Is it normal?? Thanks for response
Same thing happened to me. Did you manage to solve it?
I haven't experienced this with my Cardo 4+ unit...
@@TheDeepPlanet I solved it by factory reseting once again. 👍
Great idea! Thanks. 😎
helpful. thanks. want to get audio on BMW Connected app turn by turn on TFT with a 2019 GS Rallye not so important to have dual other tider connectivity ss a lone tider
Hi William. Sorry to hear about your accident. The Cardo works great for solo riding. I've heard of some issues connecting to the BMW system. There is a forum discussion on it somewhere on the interwebs.
@@TheDeepPlanet Hi Matt. have ordered a Freecom 4+ Dual this morning - hope this will help me keep eyes on the road... !
Hi William. You may want to watch my other videos on this topic as the Cardo does have some flaws...
@@TheDeepPlanet bought it ...! thanks Matt
So I have a Freecom 4 plus and I turned the auto volume off, but it's still doing it! It starts playing WAY too loud once I start moving and when I come to a stop it gets so quiet I can barely hear it! I've tried restarting the system as well as the phone, also tried re installing the app. Nothing is working. Someone PLEASE help me.
Try adjusting the sensitivity of the automatic volume control.
@@TheDeepPlanet already tried that too. Put it to the minimum but it’s still harsh.
Hi Dober. It may be your phone that is causing the issue. You could try changing the max volume restrictions on your device.
@@TheDeepPlanet I have the phone set to max volume so I can use the cardo’s dial soley to adjust the volume, but it keeps bugging out and blowing my ear drums out when I haven’t touched the thing at all it’s honestly quite upsetting
It might be worth returning the unit if it's still under warranty...
thank you
The Bluetooth audio mixing setting (being able to listen to your personal music while using the intercom) is the biggest feature and it also brings the biggest issue, for this video to be worth it's time it should've been covered.
Thanks for your comment. The video was just intended to try to show how to get the most out of the Cardo freedom 4 plus with as few issues as possible.
Bonjour
Love your hat!
Thanks!! 😊
I have a little delay between the two headsets! How can I fix that please?
Hi Intruder. Have you tried reconnecting? As in turning everything on and off again? Have you got voice activation turned on?
@@TheDeepPlanet I have the Spirit (non-HD). I have about 0.5sec delay between the two headsets - including the music. Do you also have about 0.5 second delay? I've tried turning them on and off, and resetting both. Both are up to date firmware.
I have noticed a slight delay but I think that's just the latency that you get with Bluetooth...
@@TheDeepPlanet I didn't have that problem with my cheap Chinese headsets! Why didn't I keep them then? The battery life was too short! The Carson's I can keep them connected all day long! And I just have to ride faster so I don't hear the delay anymore!😆
@@intrudergrid9530 Have you solved the delay problem?
So I got the second helmet set for my biltwell helmet. Bought the JBL speakers and they sound great but they do rattle with the max volume or any type of bass. Not sure if someone's got a fix
Are your speakers vlecroed in?
@@TheDeepPlanet first of all, thanks for the video. it is very helpful. but my speakers are velcroed in and I am having this rattle issue as well. interestingly it only comes from the right side speaker. do you think it could be related with velcroe? do you have ideas to fix it?
@@nicheishler7718 hi. Thanks for your comment! I think this may be distortion caused by the limitations of the speakers. Try adjusting the equaliser of your music player to reduce bass or possibly may be caused by excessive treble. Try a flat or neutral sound profile and see if that helps.
My ok google does not work at all... it just beeps and doesnt turn it on.... what i wanted to use it for most
Or find the manual of this connect cardo ??
Hi Philippe. The manual is helpful but doesn't really describe which combination of settings yield the best real world results for the Cardo feecom four plus...
The app has completely disappears from the App Store. Seems to have happened with the last update
Hope you got it to work. Have touttried contacting Cardo ?
hi I really need help. I've had my 4x for a little over a month i think and i tried to use the microphone for calls and the live intercom but no one can hear me. I don't know what the problem could be because when I say hey siri she pops up. I'm really stuck and i need to know if anyone here knows how to fix it. Again the voice commands seem to work but when being on a call or on the intercom I can hear them but they cant hear me
I’m really stuck because my other helmet has a different brand system and it’s the same thing hey Siri works but when I call someone they cant hear me at all. Could it be a phone setting or something I’m so confused
Hi mate. Try reinstalling software and make sure your microphone is correctly installed. Also check call settings. It may be your phone too.
@@TheDeepPlanet really appreciate the response man. Turns out the half helmet mic they also include with the cardo freecom 4x works but the one for full face helmets just doesn’t work for calls for some reason. Just ordered a new mic from cardo hopefully it works out👍
Would be nice if the app connected to the headset. 😂
Mine keeps hanging up when I start riding
Noise cancellation causing mediocre call quality for me people complain that I’m cutting in and out. Any one experiencing this issue?
Yes. I turned it off..
Done
nice video
Thanks!! Need to do an update.
When riding with a passenger when I shift gears the intercom sounds like someone is pressing on a PA button then turning it off. Has this happened to you? Also, there is an echo when talking with a passenger.
Hi Kevin. That's a new one for me. Maybe it's picking up the change in sound? Haven't noticed any echo either...🤔
Why would you recommend settings that you are not even aware of what they do ?
Hi Javier. Good point. After over a year of trial and error trying different combinations of the various settings, these are the settings that I have found to yield the best results.
I accidentally set mine to alexa and want to go back to hey google but I cannot find the setting to do this. Anybody know how to fix this maybe? Please?
My cardo just fell off middle highway never gonna see it again. why? because i toutched it wrong with my hand, wont recommend this version of the cardo. the release system is just too dangerous. Asked cardo if there was any way we could fix the issue even suggested getting a discount on just the cardo itself (would use m3 tape this time tho...) they said it was missuse and 100% my fault.
Sorry to hear that mate. It is a know issue... Cardo really need to work on their customer support...
Honestly it made no difference. Still cuts first word a bit and pops and cracks on random when silent. Not happy with it at all.
Cardo is completely garbage. Amazing how you can make all this money to have nonstop paring issues and now a new unit and can't even pair the third unit.
Auto volume control SUCKS, turn it off!!!
I'll have to respectfully disagree.
@@TheDeepPlanet it works, I just do NOT like it. I"m getting hard of hearing and I need a little more volume and it doesn't let u hear all the music it muffles it, IMP ...
Or find the manual of this connect cardo ??
Yes, but this is the best combination I've found...
