I had never thought of sugar before, but I do like the idea of using something biodegradable as buffer rather than putting more microplastics into the environment
It's funny that you cover this topic. I work for a sugar refinery, and I can tell you that sugar and sugar dust is highly flammable under extreme conditions. Yes, it will cause hard residue in the barrel, but use extreme caution if attempting it. The better alternative is corn meal. My granddad used corn meal for years. Just use shot shell buffer cause it is made for it. Great video!
Coffee creamer is also flammable, flour too. Both grits and cornmeal have been used for filler in black powder loads for years. I know lots of people use them for buffer too.
Good Morning , Tyler I hadn't thought about sugar as buffer alternative , but would really believe that it would be one terrible mess in anyone's bore ! But still a very good video ! Take Care and Be Safe
I explained that at the end of the video about it leaving a mess in the barrel. It’s actually flammable too. Not a good choice but will work in a pinch if you absolutely have too lol.
Lol. By this logic we might as well use desiccant gel pack(the beans) as buffer too because...the gel beans will absorb the moisture protecting the pellets and the powder! 🤣
@@Kinetic.44 It just wouldn’t work the same as buffer. I load 2.75 ounces in 12 gauge 2.5” and 3 ounces in 10 gauge. You’d be sacrificing buckshot for birdshot and it wouldn’t be any help.
Just to add again: I use lizard litter aka ground walnut tumbling media aka shot buffer. If you get leading in the barrel or have lead that just won't clean out. I load buck with walnut grounds no petals and barrel looks like a mirror. I run a few after slug ammo to make cleanup a breeze.

@@theshotgunscientists I can tell you with experience (blown up 11-87 super mag) that flour does not make a good buffer substitute.
@@saltcreekammo I think I remember you mentioning that before actually.
I've used granulated cork - mixed results

Sticky shotty lol
Ive used cornmeal.
Hey man, beleive it or not o like shooting skeet with my 10 gauge. Have you ever done a video using low pressure 10 gauge loads for skeet?
2 or 3 yes
Ive heard that Cornmeal works great as a buffer substitute.
I have too
I use cream of rice as buffer for my buckshot loads.
I’ve never heard of cream of rice, that’s pretty cool.

They’d probably be way too large
what about grits or cream of wheat
Those are pretty common buffer alternatives that seems to actually work.
Can you use lead shot as buffer?
No that would greatly increase the weight
I mean if you take that into consideration, some payloads are over 2 ounces in 12 gauge.

@@theshotgunscientists wouldn't you be sacrificing velocity rather than the amount of buckshot in your pellet stack?
