  • In the second installment of our Reference Points series we will tackle perhaps the most discussed family of watches in modern timepiece collecting. This watch is as infamous as it is famous, it's as dangerous as it is beautiful, and valuable as it is rare. I'm talking about nothing short of the Rolex "Paul Newman" Daytona, and here we will explore the six references of this absolutely legendary timepiece, as well as go into its history, ups, downs, ins and outs. This is everything you ever wanted to know about the Paul Newman Daytona.

    Instead of spending so much on the PN Daytona which has reached the edge of stupidity price-wise, I bought myself the vintage Zenith El Primero Rainbow chronograph, and the Tudor Big Block panda dial. Both watches altogether cost me under $8K, and they are beautiful, classic watches that you can wear everyday. And you know what...I'm a very happy man!

      That last sentence is the most important job of a job. A purchase should be 90% centered around that. Funny thing is that 90% of people don't realize this.

      +Albert N. Well that's cool!!! You dont HAVE TO HATE the paul newman daytonuh, MAN!
      You can have those watches and be happy. A price is a price. if a watch is awesome and CLASSIC, POPULAR, VINTAGE, TIMELESS. Then it is. price wont be low usually.... Simple as that. you can do how you want to.

      mrarch and in the late 80s early 90s, a used daytona could be very affordable (maybe not the PN but other steel versions). Just like the speedmaster pro. My uncle had a few. They were expensive but not unnatainable luxury boutique goods.

      @ Rich Buddy : and yet with all his money Floyd Weather will probably not be able to buy :
      - one Patek Philippe 5175R Grandmaster Chime
      - one CHRONOGRAPH by Hajime Asaoka
      for example because the owners won't probably sell them and there are only 5 to six In the World if I am not mistaken.
      And Floyd will probably also have to wait in the line like many millionnaires and billionaires to get their hands on a Patek Philippe Skymoon, Floyd will have to fill in an application and wait like every other possible buyer. In the meantime he will buy an easy to get huge ugly Hublot with power reserve :-)

    • @pacovl46
      @pacovl46 3 года назад +1

      I just ordered one of those. After having seen this video I now know that the Alpha is an amalgamation, though. Normally the Alpha should have a two color dial since it has the screw down chronograph pushers. Nonetheless can’t wait for it to arrive because that panda dial is just gorgeous and I don’t have the 350000 Euro for an original one. Does your Alpha already have the column wheel chronograph movement? And do you think about the bracelet? Is it really that bad?

    • @chrispenn715
      @chrispenn715 3 года назад

      @@pacovl46 I bought mine on a leather strap. I haven't seen the bracelet in the flesh but it does look poor - the clasp in particular looks flimsy. Yes mine has the column wheel movement and it looks great through the display case back. It also keeps decent time - gaining just a few seconds a day. Hope you are pleased with yours

      @pacovl46 3 года назад +1

      Historical relevance always has and always will influence prices collectors are willing to pay for watches -- or most any collectible for that matter. It's just part of the esoteric nature of collecting; demand can be generated from totally non-quantifiable anecdotes and perceptions. That's part of the fun really. Don't get me wrong, that wouldn't be enough to sway me from the 6263 two-tone panda dial - just is what it is

      PD Nance I wasnt talking about a PN. Just a ´normal´ 6265 will set you back $30k. Obviously more then a new one, but as an investment this is a way better bet. Or maybe, if you dont want to spend as much, a nice Zenith movement Daytona, way better then the current ones.

      The Zenith 400 El Primero movement (1988-2000) Daytona is, according to many experts, the best value Daytona out there. Very solid and accurate, that Zenith 400 was regarded as one of the best chronograph movements at the time. One will set you back 8 - 15K. In my honest opinion, that's good value when compared to an early Daytona. I love the "Paul Newman" models, but they´re stupid expensive at the moment. Buy one if you can!! I wish I could...

      37.5mm 6263 and 36.85mm earlier non oyster case - the 6263/6265 really are a nicer feel as lugs case width crown and pushers are more substantial as is bracelet - given the demographic exotic dials are £200-300k it means the more popular at the time panda and reverse panda non exotic are the next investment hotspots currently at £60-£80k. My fave is the funnily enough the cheapest oyster the 6265 with black sigma dial it's an amazing piece.

    Paul Newman hated the Daytona and would snap at any watch geeks that asked about it. Rolex made a bundle without sharing the profits for a watch he didn’t wear. He preferred the date-just that he wore in The Color of Money. He also wore digital watches towards the end of his life. Sorry....... #ripOff

      +Tank gunna Um, that's because the center seconds hand is the chronograph seconds counter, it starts and stops with the pusher at 2 o'clock. The seconds hand one in the 9 o'clock sub-dial is keeping time.
