My mother was an old school quilter/ seamstress. As a military wife and mother her first paying job was on base at the dry cleaners as a seamstress. She is gone now, but OMG she would have been delighted with this awesome tool ! By the way- If you think your sewing room is messy you should have seen hers. I finally got her to organize about 4 years before she passed away. She had 37 totes full of material, 8 totes of patterns,( 2) 3 drawer bins for notions, and 12 totes of crochet/knitting threads, a 10 foot long homemade quilting frame lol and yes she did it all by hand. The only thing she used her machine for was clothing. She shopped Hancock Fabrics and we ALWAYS came out with something. I learned everything she taught me but boy how things have changed. I never had the patience to sew clothes, but watching her sew was a treat. Her quilts are so warm and I have a a part of her with me always. Thanks so much for sharing this !
This is beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing a memory of her with me!
I have very minimal space and use the flannel side if a plastic tablecloth, use painters tape to tape it to the wall, and remove it when done.
Ah! Yes, the plastic table cloth idea! Thats another smart idea! Us quilters know how to get it done, right?!
i Love this idea!!! i live in a 100+ yr old 1 room school house, and only have one wall that actually accomodate a design wall of any size. and i love the idea that if i need to make it larger, i can just add anothe tablecloth!!! That is so smart!!!!
I have the thought that you could roll up the table cloth with your pieces if you needed to tuck it away in a hurry. 🤔 💭
I don't know if it would work, but it's a thought.
Tape up the batting that you are going to use for the quilt - OMG, Brilliant! Thanks for the great tips on design walls!
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for sharing, you are so sweet!
I'm fortunate I have enough wall space for 2 48" foam boards duct taped together. (My sewing area is above the garage so there's plenty of wall space. Mine sits in computer racking (which keeps it nesled in the bottom) and leans against wall, so I can move it. I have quilt batting on mine (I used my pneumatic upholstery gun get it taught), but I would recommend (after 2+ years of use) using flannel. Flannel would allow you to get the threads off easier without disturbing the batting substrate.
Silicon brushes and dense foam (that you use for removing pet hair) work great in the sewing room.
Over the weekend, I used my design wall to baste my quilt. It was a game changer. Still a dreaded chore with less of the dread.
You are so inspiring! I've had the luxury of growing up with a seamstress Mom and always had opportunity to learn. I did take advantage of that just enough to learn the basics. I've felt like sewing is a passion of mine, I just didn't know how to go further. My mom also has a 9-5 and can't give me all the lessons I am demanding. With that said, I started watching videos and you have rescued me!!! You are very easy to learn from. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge 😃
Aw Thank you! You are blessed to grow up with such wonderful inspirations 💖💖
I use a piece of felt. I put 4 command hooks on the wall and cut a tiny holes along the top of the felt to loop over the command hooks. So far I love it.
That's a great idea! Glad you found something that works for you!
Omg I was going crazy trying to find something similar to what you have. I really like that you go over it!! I love that it’s economic and easy to use!!
You are so welcome! Make one and enjoy it! It is SO useful!
Have you thought about getting 2 boards the same size, make a double sleeve, or put fabric hinges between them, fold them back to back, when you only need the size you have. Open them out at a slight angle to each other, and they should stay upright, for a larger top. You could get wood blocks about 6" long and cut a slot wide enough to fit the covered board into. Put felt on the bottom to protect your floors, around 4 should hold the 2 boards steady, only 2 for 1 free standing board. All the best. Love the use the batting for the quilt idea. Caution, a painter told me not to leave painter's tape up in the long term, it will stick too well.
I think this is a great idea! You wouod have to find a way to make it really stable because if you don't use pins and just rely and the cling (like I do most of the time) even the fan on sometimes makes the pieces fall. If you board is wobbly it might do the same. You'd also need a good bit of floor space for it. I've seen people who have the wall space mount it on the wall. That is a really really nice way to use the design boards!
Great ideas. I have saved your video to watch again.
Awesome! Thank you!
I just love your videos--always great information and explained well. I have a design board like yours, but years ago i have used a cheap flannel backed table cloth and used the back side as my go-to design board. I would tape it to the wall, place my blicks and re-arrange. When i needed it out of the way but didn't want to remove the blocks, I could roll it up with the blocks inside until i was ready to get back to designing. Of course this was before cell phones, so you couldn't take a quick picture to check color placement or block arrangement. So glad we've come a long way since the early days!
That is still such a great idea and I love you can move it around.
Thanks! You gave me some good ideas. I've seen flannel with 2" grid, which would make it easier to align blocks.
I also read that you can use a flannel sheet, which is affordable but doesn't have a quilters 2" grid.
I've got to make up my mind!
Yes, you could totally use that as well.
I absolutely loved this video. Thanks for information.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching! :)
This is genius! I have used this insulation board as a lightweight base for a large mixed media project. Easy to cut. Light weight if you wanted to hang it on the wall. Brilliant!
Great idea! I am so glad you shared that Pamela!
Awesome video!! Thanks 😊
You are so welcome! 😊
Awesome 👌 👏 I just asked about this on another video!
Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful! 😘😘
Oh my goodness, I’m so happy I found your channel! I’ve already followed your Triangillow and now *this* quilt board!! You now have a new subscriber!!! 😊💖
OH welcome Marcie, I am so happy to have you.
This is a GREAT idea! I'm going to do this. I have been using a bed, but I have to clear one off or make the bed and I can't leave it there. I can't hang one on the wall, but I can put it in a closet when I am done for the day. Your so talented.
So glad you decided to try it out!!
Love your idea , with the quilting board. I have a small craftroom that only has 2 full walls. This would be good for me to pull the board out when needed!
For sure, it is great to free up space.
Great idea! Thx! 🤗💞
I just saw this video n I really Luv it, I just started quilting n I have really bad knees I use to lay out on the floor but had trouble getting up n lining up 2 large folding tables ate up most if my space plus I had to fpkd them back up at the end of my day is such a hassle do tomorrow im going to home depot n get me a few if these panels, I do have some in my garage but if I take them then my garage wall won't be insulated. 12:32 simple but it never accured to me to do this. Thanks
I'm so glad that you found the information useful! I do love my design wall! 🥰🥰 Enjoy!
Awesome suggestions! 😊
I am so glad they helped.
Thank you! You gave me some good ideas for design boards to use even though my sewing space has very little wall space. I especially liked your suggestion for a lightweight moveable board. I can keep it leaning up against a large bookshelf I use for fabric storage and then easily move it when I want to look at fabric stored on the shelves. Then, bingo! put the design board back agsinst the shelves and kerp on working. Design board problem solved! Thank you again! PS - I just subscribed. :)
You are so welcome! That is awesome and (if I may so) going to be so life changing! I move my board around all the time 😘😘
Hi Christen! Your design board is great! A couple of years ago I made a couple of portable boards because I really have zero wall space in my sewing room. I got a package of 3 foam core boards, and I covered them with flannel (which I got super cheap as an end-of-bolt purchase) and used duct tape to secure the flannel to the back. They work great, and I just store them behind the door when not in use. When I need a big design board, I use the bed! Not ideal, but it works.
Yes! I think that's fantastic! Us creative are pretty inventive when push comes to shove! 🥰🥰 great ideas!
Thanks Christen for explaining and showing your design board. Better know how the quilt will look before starting to work on it. 🤔😀
Yes! I agree!
I have two and put flannel on them. Love it.
Oops! Meant felt. It's great.
Awesome! Yes, that's a great idea!
Thank you! I thought it would be simple...it is!!!!
You're welcome! Yes, very simple!
Thank you so much. My sewing room is a mess too. Thinking of moving it to another room. Going to check out your other videos.
Thank you! I love the mess that I am blessed to live in when it comes to fabric... dishes and laundry, not so much!
I need advise on a memorial quilt on the clothes and how to do them
This is an awesome video. I'm glad I found it. Thank you for mentioning that it can be made double sided. I didn't think of that but makes so much sense because for some reason I always have "Work in Progress". 🤣 One question I have is what to use to cover the board. Some use batting then flannel, some just use batting or just flannel or fleece. What have you found to be the strongest hold?
Hi! Thats a good question. Personally, I have just used batting because that is what I had on hand when I made my board and it didn't make sense to go buy more materials... Fleece to me feels like it could get too fuzzy overtime. Batting seems to hold its texture. I've had mine for a long long time and aside from threads that accumulate, nothing else has changed. I imagine flannel would be the same as batting?
If wall space is a problem, then you can hang a projector screen with flannel covering
I love that idea... have you ever just rolled your quilt up in it before? Mine usually pend a lot of time on the design wall
Love your videos, learning so much. I have a question. Yesturday I received 2 large foam insulation boards that will be a mounted design wall. I'm in a quandary to know if I sound use batting (if so what kind) or a flannel. What do you think?
Hi Lottie - how exciting to get a design wall! I just used regular batting that I had in my sewing room. I think mine is 100% cotton, but if you have excess flannel that you can find cheaper than batting - it will work just as well!
Do these "bow" or develop a curve in the middle over time if they aren't attached to the wall?
I've had mine for years now - I've never noticed a problem. Mine is not attached to the wall. My guess would be that depends on how thick the insulation is? If you get super thin you may have an issue. I think mine close to a 3/4"? I'd have to double check that to be sure. I move mine all the time though!
One question: Can I use Polar Fleece instead of cotton batting?
Hi Candace, I think it should work. I've seen people use fleece and flannel before even! Let me know how you like it!
Can you use cork board?
If it is sturdy enough and that is what you have on hand... I would imagine it could last covered in quilt batting. My insulation board is about 1" thick.
Thank you I found the board you have now the fun begins. Your awesome!
