I don’t really think Ian Connor has a relevancy anymore in the fashion atmosphere today but I do think that he was very important in almost re-introducing things to a younger demographic at the time about three or four years ago that today we have grown into almost a renaissance of being aware of new and old brands
It's just the marketing of the brand. Frat bros love the association that Sicko has with late 2010's rap culture, due to Ian's celebrity friends wearing the brand (e.g. Ye, Rocky, Yachty, Virgil and Carti). When you wear a Sicko shirt you don't give too many fucks about high fashion culture, it's like wearing a band tee. It's a statement piece to identify yourself as a part of that culture.
Dont think people would understand this but there’s this toxicity aspect to wearing it for some people. 1. They know that theyll rarely see people wear it b/c it’s “bad” not in terms of looks but in terms of message and 2. they feel some type of power knowing that ppl view the wearer in a negative way but wont go and say it to them in public so they continue to wear it anyway. Online theyll obviously get flamed. Idk if i explained it well but it is for edgy people like when someone wears something obscene or graphic in public to incite a reaction
Idk, you gotta keep in mind 99% of people in most cities in the world will have no idea what sicko is or even look at it twice, it's pretty niche, there's a lot of layers from fashion, to streetwear, to if you even ever liked rap music that will make it less of a chance you know who Ian is. I also don't think anyone wearing sicko really thinks anyone who knows what it is actually is gonna feel that strongly about a random guy wearing a t shirt.. My opinion majority of people wearing Sicko are just very influenced by the people around them/the people they follow on the internet who they think are cool. I don't think even frat bros are walking around like "hahaha that guy looked at my Sicko shirt I bet he's so mad I'm still repping this and supporting Ian haha swag, sorry I'm a Sicko soldier bro hahahahaha" lol
Kinda reminds me of westwoods seditionaries in regard to ur 2nd point if that’s the case but with sicko it just has no underlying meaning to the offensive designs n graphics no substance
I dont care about sicko but there has to be atleast one more section of what constitutes good art, there is so much good art that wouldn't fit into either of these, The Ramones, DS2 or Playboi Carti are examples in music of what sicko I think aims for in fashion it is not technically impressive or has a big meaning or concept behind it but they speak to more simple and viceral entertainment maybe also linked with overall aesthetic and ethos with the movement they represent having depth but not the pieces by themselves. I don't think Sicko achieves this category either but I would argue some eras of Supreme do for example, you could also argue someone like Hedi Slimane achieves this.
I mean that gets into the (probably pretty snobby) question about if that would be considered "good art" so to speak. Especially in fashion I don't personally think something needs to be "good art" to be worthwhile, and so can accept that category as not necessarily "good art" but still relevant culturally and not necessarily bad. But that's kinda semantics at that point.
The shirt you referenced was a Joy Divizn collab so it might’ve been 100% Phoenix’s idea since he’s way more accustomed to low culture. Dude even said he takes nostalgia from his childhood and puts it on clothes
Joy Divizn is still pretty much the same in that they are just slapping edgy text and graphics on blanks that they think are cool. This goes for VLONE aswell, but at least joy divizn has more than one graphic.
It’s Mew, not Mewtwo. But I doubt ian Connor even that knew that either. Good video tho I def think it’s a discussion worth having. I like the way you broke down the categories.
To say it’s not good art is kinda wild , because the intent behind the art is to make stuff that looks cool. The thing about art is that it doesn’t have to mean anything or be well made.. even if it isn’t an expression for Ian himself, it may be an expression for the wearer. Art is meant to be given meaning by those who experience it , regardless of what it may mean to the creator. I think your disdain for Ian kinda jaded how you defined art , OR you may need to re-evaluate your idea of what art actually is.

@@silk3142 In my head Sickö is set in a world where everything is oversexualized. Our morals in our reality doesn’t exist in Sickös reality. Everything is a green light there. Ex Sickö has a graphic tee of two baby monkeys in sex positions. That graphic is sorta weird to the public bc normal ppl focus too much on connotations. I like the design tho. When u focus less on connotation and start focusing more on how Ian is showing u the world he is creating then it becomes art. Bc Ian is building a world, and each piece he releases I get a glimpse into it more. Or maybe Ian jus likes sex and expresses that through clothing. Either way I still support it.
