You need to have artistic thinking in order to understand, how this place will look like when photographing at night! This is similar to finding a treasure in those places, where everyone just passes by, unaware of what is nearby. And each of your videos, this is a whole movie that helps to see it. Richard, thank you very much!
Absolutly love your channel and your work, as a budding beginner nightscape photographer your videos are a god send and really helpful.I live in the far north east of Scotland where light polution can be quite bad but planning a trip to the Cairngorms national park which is classed as a dark zone in Scotland, so hopfully should be able to see a huge improvement to my shots.
Really appreciate you watching my friend. I've just visited Scotland and had a brief stay at the Isle of Skye and Glencoe .. .what beautiful locations.
Very timely topic for me. I was out shooting earlier in the week and ended up at a back road side spot I had scouted several weeks ago. Not the place I had originally intended to shoot, but changed plans due to the conditions. There was a house several hundred metres away and the front gates to their rather long drive where closed, so I decided I wouldn't bother them given it was about 10:30pm. A few cars drove by during my shoot, I waved and they didn't stop so didn't think anything of it. Anyway, finished my time lapse and started to head home only to be pulled over by the cops a few KMs down the track. Turns out the owners there had noticed me and unfortunately had been burgled a number of times recently and thought I was there to come back for more. It was all cleared up pretty quickly, but I felt terrible that I had caused these people some angst about what I was up to, especially as I didn't finish my shooting until nearly midnight. Think I will take a leaf from your book and go out and visit them with a print from what I shot that night. Which brings me to a bit of a segway, what service do you recommend Richard to get prints and calenders done?
Hi Dominic. That's a lesson well learnt. Are you in Australia ..?? There are so many people doing calendars you can take your pick .. it also depends on how many you want to produce. As far as printing pictures it's exactly the same.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Sure is. Yeah, I am in Australia. Pretty close to you it would seem, I tend to shoot mostly around the Bendigo region. Glad it isn't just me then, seems there are so many options for custom printing these days. As yet I'm not printing anything, so might just do something simple in this instance and read up on options for the future.
Im a new subscriber. And all i can say is that your work is inspirational. I will definitely go and try more nightscapes with subjects in the foreground and light-painted. Just one question. When you blend the subject from several images, do you shoot raw or jpeg? Just thinking about file sizes. Many thanks and carry on the excellent vids.
Hi Gary, I'm very pleased to hear that you feel inspired .. that's my aim with these videos. I always shoot raw if I'm going to edit any image ..especially nightscapes.
@@nightscapeimages.richard ok great. I shoot raw too. Many thanks indeed. Just need to find a clear night now. At present very cloudy in uk. Thank you for reply.
Hi Richard , just watched your video loved it as always, as a point of interest the piece of junk that you were unsure what it was is in fact an old time meat mincer, I must be a bit older than you.
Hi Richard, thanks for another very interesting vid. I often wonder how far you travel to these places, even if they are in your district, in Australia iit could be hundreds of kilometers ? You had me confused when you mentioned canola, it looks like a crop we have called rapeseed - I checked on google and they are the same. The scene of the tank and windmill with view to the east - do you ever consider moonscapes ( full moon ) or pics with the moon in them, these would fit an easterly perspective well ? Finally, the thing made of trees, absolutely brilliant, I am looking forward to seeing what you make of this.
Thanks for the video. Just starting out with DSLR photography. I haven't heard you mention light pollution much. I take it your really lucky where you are and light pollution doesn't cast a problem.
Great video Richard, and wow, so many fantastic subjects on Tonys property. I'd like to know how you actually come by these properties with great subject to shoot? Do you just spot them randomly as you drive by, do you stalk everyones property via google maps? or do you do a shoutout on the local facebook page for property owners? Not having the large folio of images to show a property owner "this is what I do", would deter me a little approaching owners, how did you get around this when starting out? Thanks again for awesome content.
Hey Mick, thanks for watching. I do a lot of driving and get off the beaton track. Then I just walk in and start chatting with people. I do use google maps to help me find some spots but not specific farms. You don't need a huge folio of images to explain what you do. Just show them a few you have on your phone or better still do some enlarged prints .. the calendars are great for that.
Olá amigo! Gosto muito do seu trabalho e estou aprendendo muito também. Aguardando aqui os próximos vídeos, que com certeza, serão muito interessantes a julgar pelos lugares. Mostre também a edição deles. Obrigado! Abraços. Nélder do Rio de Janeiro - Brasil.
What is the Milky Way Season over there? here in Southern California goes from March till October pretty much. But as i am an Argentinean it would be nice to go back home to take some pictures. I asume the season would be similar to Australia.
Well if you're keen you can see the milky way core rising in the pre-dawn sky in mid January. Also you can still get the setting milky way at the start of November.
I always value you giving tips on the milky way placement. It would be really awesome if you could explain milkyway placement throught the year. I understand it shows during some months throughtout the year and also and moves during the night but i am always guessing and you know waiting for hours trusting apps but i would love to understand better. Thanks for this video again
Beauty, another inspiring vid, Richard. However, I have a problem and would trust your opinion. Since my phone can't run a compass I'm dependent on Stellarium to tell me which is what. At this time of year though, with its 'Ground' depiction activated, Stellarium gives the impression that Sagittarius is just above the horizon, which isn't the case. Isn't it so that you still need a low camera looking up to capture the galactic core?
Thanks so much Barry. I'm assuming you're using a desktop computer to view Stellarium ..?? Also, what country are you in ..?? I find Stellarium very accurate but you must make sure your date and time as well as location are set properly.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I'm in Australia, on Lake Macquarie actually. On my PC, Stellarium says the core will appear between the south-west and western horizon around 11pm tonight - or would be if we weren't socked-in with cloud. But how high will it be in the sky? If the program gave an accurate indication of that it would help. The last time I shot the galactic core, two weeks ago, standing on my roof at 10:30pm, the camera pointed straight up, a difficult situation in which to arrange a satisfactory composition of anything.
@@barryashenhurst2071 Go out at about 8.30pm tonight and look towards the west. It will be there laying down on the horizon as the night progresses .. gone by about midnight or so.
@@nightscapeimages.richardOkay, and thank you, Richard. My brain has been kicked and punched from all angles by luminosity masks so there's nothing Sagittarius can do to me.
Hey John, you'll struggle with those cameras as they don't like being pushed up into the higher iso's. You may get something with a very fast aperture lens that's ok but the newer cameras are so much better for this form of photography.
Always helpful to see the process behind your nightscape photos Richard and good reminder for people to get permission before entering someone's property in the middle of the night...don't want to be mistaken for a trespasser and end up getting arrested! =) Do you ever do any shooting during daylight hours or are you strictly a night photographer?

Hi Gary, I'm very pleased to hear that you feel inspired .. that's my aim with these videos. I always shoot raw if I'm going to edit any image ..especially nightscapes.
@@nightscapeimages.richard ok great. I shoot raw too. Many thanks indeed. Just need to find a clear night now. At present very cloudy in uk. Thank you for reply.
Hi Richard , just watched your video loved it as always, as a point of interest the piece of junk that you were unsure what it was is in fact an old time meat mincer, I must be a bit older
than you.
Haha .. thanks Rick. Really appreciate you watching.
Thanks a lot David. Yes it is Rapeseed. I might just do a moonlit scene there .. .good idea. All of these locations are within an hour of my house.
What a treasure trove Woodlands is!!! Can I come with you when you go back at night??!
You missed out Carmel .. I went back this week. Video to come.
Thanks for the video. Just starting out with DSLR photography. I haven't heard you mention light pollution much. I take it your really lucky where you are and light pollution doesn't cast a problem.
Thanks for watching Fin 032. No I don't have a problem with light pollution. Where I shoot is mainly bortle 2-3 skies.
Really appreciated Nelder, thank you.
Nice!
Thank you
What is the Milky Way Season over there? here in Southern California goes from March till October pretty much.
Thank you very much Nikola .. I'll certainly do more of that in the future.
My brain has been kicked and punched from all angles by luminosity masks so there's nothing Sagittarius can do to me.
hi richard i have a Nikon D300 and a Nikon D200 are these good enough to do these night scape photos
Thanks a lot for watching Paula. I have done years of various photography genres from wedding to portrait to event and landscape but my passion is nightscapes and that's what I concentrate on these days.
Hi Richard. Love the BTS vid.
