Purgatory is supposed to be a place for sinners to go and pay for their sins till they're clean enough to enter heaven. And that's what happened to all the main characters during the course of the film and/or during their stay in Bruges, they've all paid for their sins, one way or the other.
I think what it means that even though harry was trying to kill him, he still tries to help him by trying to tell that he did not a child but a dwarf, so his sins are forgiven.The whole city has a fairy tale feel to it(its often referenced in dialogue too), coincidence happens way to often like how ray survives with multiple bullet wounds etc
I mean, to be fair, surviving multiple bullet wounds isn't that crazy of a coincidence, especially surviving for a few minutes. Now, addressing abc .z's question, I do think that that is the metaphor being made. Ray has finally learned that he is willing to accept not his punishment for his crimes, but the mother's. That he cannot take her feeling of justice away, and on top of that, he tried to save his enemy, Harry, by trying to say that the dwarf was not a little boy. Also, I love the detail of Harry saying "Oh, I know I shouldn't, but I will," to the bullets that will "make your head explode." Which is what leads to him being unable to tell that the body of the dwarf is not a school boy. One of the little details of consequences and choices that was left out. This script was so meticulous with every little detail of what happened, every key moment was hinted at and foreshadowed.
You’re damn right, it is confirmed in the last scene where all the characters of the “European movie” are dressed after the characters in the painting in the museum in what is supposed to be the dream sequence they got the dwarf for. The dwarf was also dressed as a school boy to bring us back to a full circle

Ray is in purgatory awaiting judgement for his misdeed, will Harry send him to hell or will Ken succeed in allowing him to be redeemed and move in the direction of heaven. BIG ASS SPOILER: At the end you're not meant to know if Ray lives or not. Its left purposefully ambiguous. What you do know is that Rays soul has been redeemed by Kens efforts because he no longer wishes to die IE: Rays last lines in the film “I really really hoped I wouldn’t die I really really hoped I wouldn’t die.” A layered and nuanced film that still manages to remain fun.
I saw the purgatory allegory before but after this review am now wondering, is it ACTUALLY purgatory, and Ken and Harry are God and Satan determining where Ray's soul goes? Do you know that Ken and Harry existed before this story or is it in Ray's mind as it is basically from his POV?
I just watched the movie and the only question I have is why did Harry has to die. I understand that as a character of principle, he killed himself because he thought he killed a boy (who really isn't), but was it necessary for the denouement of the story itself? Would it be any different if he knew Jim was a dwarf and not a kid?

Idk why but my favorite part about this movie is the pacing. The beginning drags like all hell and I actually contemplated turning it off because it has such a slow start, but after the midway point the movie becomes incredibly interesting. But the craziest thing is by the end of the movie, I realized how important and crucial the pacing of the beginning was, and loved it after subsequent viewings. While it may not seem that big of a deal to some, I've never seen a movie that made me hate the beginning initially and then have me love it after watching the movie in its whole. It just felt so meta.
I actually preferred the beginning. I felt that is when the actors were able to express themselves rather than work their way up to the inevitable finale.
Late reply, Bob Barker, but I think the thing is that if the movie was the same pace as the beginning, the whole way through, it'd be rather unbearable. I think that it's meant to be a bit boring at the beginning, as it puts us in Ray's shoes more, and in general the slow reveal of information is fantastic.
I dragged through the first half too! It's funny to be convinced you don't really like a movie for that long only to completely change your mind late into the runtime - it's why I rarely turn movies off before finishing them. What's funnier is when you completely don't care for the entirety of the runtime only to watch it again 2 months later and feel the complete opposite. Birdman, Blade Runner, and 2001 a Space Odyssey come to mind for me.
Love everything about this movie. One of my all time favourites. Everything from the clothes to the setting, the music, the cinematography, lighting etc.. The pace of the movie, the general 'feel' of it.

Have you ever thought about the title of the film? I think the meaning goes deeper. Ray (the childish - naive) hitman, names Brudges - "Hell". The city is grey, gothic, has depresive pictures and statues about humans suffering. The only ones that thinks that Brudges is lovely and beautiful are Harry and Ken. They like "hell". I think that's why Ken wants to save Ray, he knows he hasn't go deep in the road of "sin" as Harry and him had. He wants to save him from hell, that's why he tells him to go far from Brudges. But everything seems to keep him In Brudges, because of the kid until he makes a choice. He choose purgatory, to face punishment (to face the mother). Even the people in costumes in the last scene as he's being carried are similar to the purgatory of the painting he liked. He said that purgatory is for people that was shitty but not entirely bad. That's why he doesn't want to die, he wants to make amends to not to end up all eternity In Brudges.

Great analysis! One thing I picked up on watching the movie was the painting that Ken is looking at in the museum, Bosch's "The Last Judgement". He tells Ray that the people depicted in the piece are in purgatory, awaiting judgement. For Ken, Ray and as it turns out, Harry, Bruges is their purgatory.

So I'm super fucking late to the party, but has anyone who's seen this movie read The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien? A black comedy about a Irishman who flees to a fucking fairytale land after committing a murder for money only to realize . . . well, let's just say I saw the similarity halfway through the film and the ending cemented my view.
This might be my favorite movie. I think everyone should try to watch it and to me "Two hitmen hides in Bruges to await instructions from their boss after a job went wrong" just is intriguing enough to get someone interested. By the way, I wanna mention that Harry chose his own demise by picking the Dum-Dum bullets. He says "I know I shouldn't, but I will." He really shouldn't have, because if he didn't, the midgets head wouldn't have exploded and he would see that he had not shot a child.
I love your video! And this flick, of course. What I love so much about it is that even though they're killers, they're just so nice to each other and you just wanna hug them and tell them that everything's alright. And especially I love that between them they're so civilized. To other people, that's another story, but still, they realize their less good actions and can actually feel sorry, and guilty. One of the big themes is guilt, obviously. This is actually my first impression, I just saw this movie, it's really brilliant and funny, to anyone who's reading this and hasn't seen it, I hardly recommend.

When I reheard the first sentence, it sounds like he said "after I killed 'im." It's possible he was saying "killed 'em." Even if he didn't, this movie is the tightest, most full circle script I've ever seen. Every single decision has consequences, and is ultimately important. I especially love Harry's "I know I shouldn't..." when he's offered the dum-dums. If not for that decision, he would have seen it wasnt a child.
In Bruges in one of my favorite films, and if anything this video made me like (or at least appreciate it) a whole lot more. Really enjoy these videos, please keep them coming! Great review of this great film. You touched on it but I don't think I've heard anyone say is that Ray can not see the beauty of the place. He feels he doesn't deserve it and his mind is preoccupied. I would be interesting to see how his character reacted had he come before the accident, he might have loved it. At this time, for him, everywhere is a shit hole, even Dublin
Harry is a great charcater. Even when he is the "villain" he is not a bad person. How he ask for sorry to her wife after the insult. How he forgives Ken on the toward. How does he feel bad after shooting Ken, and explains why he did it, how he doesnt want to pass over the hotel woman. Of course by the end the way he ends his own life. Truly a great villain and I choose Harry over other know villains like The jocker.

The scene where Ken tells he's judged his life and says he's only killed bad men (except for one lollipop man) explains he's given his life a hard weighing. But as this reviewer says, he still is earnestly concerned. And, I cannot be completely sure of the character's backstory but I also imagine he could've worked for Harry way back in an honest sense but, after his wife was murdered he became a hitman because he lost his will to live the "god-fearing" life. The scene with the hit in the church even alluded that these hitmen only kill for money- not anger or senseless nothing. His life, upon losing its higher meaning, was sacrificed to pay back a friend/boss. Even in this scene as he's going to sacrifice himself-having to do it himself instead of by Harry's gun- he drops coins to warn off any pedestrians below to stay clear as to not be hurt.. tears. People say that doctors/nurses, cops, and firemen are the real heroes etc, but I objectly disagree. I cannot judge these groups to be an all-encompassing type of heroes. I have acquaintances from high school who've become all these and none were very heroic-they're all in it for the security of salary and benefits to pay for their lifestyle. But men and women like Ken walk the earth, I know this. Those people are the heroes. He didn't just give his last breath to save Ray, he gave a suicidal Ray hope (Ray's last words are he hoped he wouldn't die). All I can say is that I wish I had someone like that in my life.

What I love about in Bruges is how they presented some horrible characters, all showing some kind of humanity in some point. Ray has always that weight on his bag for killing that little boy; Ken is willing to give his life to Ken; Harry forgives Ken, and when the time comes, he is willing to sacrifice himself because of the murder he commited on a "child". Even you can see he doesnt want to kill Ray, but his moral code is too big.

Maybe work on the music and background of your voice when you intercut with scenes from the film. But all in all, glad I watched this!

Thanks for this. I watched this in the cinema and at the time was a bit confused, but really felt that i had watched something good for once. This helped me understand what i liked about the film.
When I reheard the first sentence, it sounds like he said "after I killed 'im." It's possible he was saying "killed 'em."
Even if he didn't, this movie is the tightest, most full circle script I've ever seen. Every single decision has consequences, and is ultimately important. I especially love Harry's "I know I shouldn't..." when he's offered the dum-dums. If not for that decision, he would have seen it wasnt a child.

Great movie review, tied it up quite well. Took me out of it when you used audio from the different clips. May I suggest using one bit of audio from the entire movie as an overlay instead of switching pieces? I was listening to what you were saying then taken out of the moment when the music changed. Keep it up!

Great review of this great film. You touched on it but I don't think I've heard anyone say is that Ray can not see the beauty of the place. He feels he doesn't deserve it and his mind is preoccupied. I would be interesting to see how his character reacted had he come before the accident, he might have loved it. At this time, for him, everywhere is a shit hole, even Dublin

This is a great review about a great movie.
Harry is a great charcater. Even when he is the "villain" he is not a bad person. How he ask for sorry to her wife after the insult. How he forgives Ken on the toward. How does he feel bad after shooting Ken, and explains why he did it, how he doesnt want to pass over the hotel woman. Of course by the end the way he ends his own life. Truly a great villain and I choose Harry over other know villains like The jocker.

Also as I understand it, at the end of the movie, the film set that Ray wanders onto whilst trying to escape from Harry is filled with people dressed as the beings depicted within "The Last Judgement". I remember reading that somewhere but don't remember where.

Nice analysis of the movie! Mirrors my own take on many of the themes it presents. Your movie play list uncannily matches that of my own. In addition to the films I mentioned below, check out Wrestling Earnest Hemingway w/ Richard Harris and Robert Duvall!
The scene where Ken tells he's judged his life and says he's only killed bad men (except for one lollipop man) explains he's given his life a hard weighing. But as this reviewer says, he still is earnestly concerned. And, I cannot be completely sure of the character's backstory but I also imagine he could've worked for Harry way back in an honest sense but, after his wife was murdered he became a hitman because he lost his will to live the "god-fearing" life. The scene with the hit in the church even alluded that these hitmen only kill for money- not anger or senseless nothing. His life, upon losing its higher meaning, was sacrificed to pay back a friend/boss. Even in this scene as he's going to sacrifice himself-having to do it himself instead of by Harry's gun- he drops coins to warn off any pedestrians below to stay clear as to not be hurt.. tears.
People say that doctors/nurses, cops, and firemen are the real heroes etc, but I objectly disagree. I cannot judge these groups to be an all-encompassing type of heroes. I have acquaintances from high school who've become all these and none were very heroic-they're all in it for the security of salary and benefits to pay for their lifestyle. But men and women like Ken walk the earth, I know this. Those people are the heroes. He didn't just give his last breath to save Ray, he gave a suicidal Ray hope (Ray's last words are he hoped he wouldn't die). All I can say is that I wish I had someone like that in my life.

Beautiful review for a beautiful movie
What I love about in Bruges is how they presented some horrible characters, all showing some kind of humanity in some point. Ray has always that weight on his bag for killing that little boy; Ken is willing to give his life to Ken; Harry forgives Ken, and when the time comes, he is willing to sacrifice himself because of the murder he commited on a "child". Even you can see he doesnt want to kill Ray, but his moral code is too big.
This film is fucking amazing
