My all time favorite film and a great look at the inner workings of it. This film is so deep with visual metaphors and character development that I see, hear, and understand new things every time I watch it. Great job!

So far I've only watched these videos on movies I had previously seen, yet on this one, for whatever reason, I watched this before seeing the film. Definitely interesting, as it allowed me to watch the movie in a different way than I would have on a blind viewing. I'm not sure how to feel about it, but I know for a fact it didn't take away from the experience at all. There were still things I took away from each scene that differed from your own, yet some others meshed with your perspective into a pretty beautiful perception. I loved this movie, just like you said I could. Thank you for your work, it is wonderful!

Binge watching all your videos, you give a whole new prospective and appreciation on all the movies you analyze, the way you deconstruct and reassemble the whole plot and the intents a director may of had, its like watching a master watchmaker takes apart a watch. Very impressive, you should have so many more subs.

I had seen this movie a long time ago and loved it then. however after watching your review I had to see the movie again. and now realise truly that there is enough beauty in the work to make your heart burst. .and also the movie's score/ soundtrack is amazing.

This is such a beautiful movie. I loved your analysis. I remember the first time I saw this film, I was so touched by it, and I still am. A lot of people say it doesn't hold up well. I very strongly disagree with that statement. For me, this movie wasn't about us becoming slaves to the things we own, but rather becoming slaves to society, doing whatever society expects from us. If you think about it, every character in the movie does that, except for Ricky. Jane hangs out with a "popular" girl from school, who isn't really her friend. Angela tries to maintain that hot and popular, rebel girl image. Caroline wants to be this successful, controlling person, but we find out that's not the way she really was in her youth. Lester is very unhappy with his life because he hasn't grown up to be the man he wanted to be. Hence, the comments about his youth. And Ricky's father hides behind this tough, straight guy personality, but we later find out he actually might be gay.

You said this movie was about characters evaluating themselves, going after they wanted. The real beauty was having them take a step further than their first evaluation, what they THOUGHT they wanted. Lester thought he wanted Angela, but once he got it, he realized he didn't. Caroline thought she wanted to kill Lester, but once she got it she is full of grief.
To me, this movie's about finding what really, really matters.

One may question whether or not American Beauty actually is an adaptation of Lolita; and, yes, it does seem difficult to define it as such. Yet, it also seems remarkably uncanny that Lester Burnham is an anagram for Humbert Learns and that Lester falls in love with a girl with the last name of Hayes. American Beauty is undoubtedly inspired by Nabokov’s novel

Don't know if this was just me that noticed but when Karen breaks down and cries cause she can't sell the house, the blinds move, just like how the shirts move later on after her husband has died. I think this shows how his death truly affected her, even tho it wouldn't seem to as the movie plays

I don't know either but I guess it was to represent him getting what he always wanted; to be happy. He got back his life and in his last moments, looked back on his life and was essentially happy. It's tragic, but it seems like a better choice because he was so happy

I think you make some good observations in this video. But in my opinion there are a few things you may be a little off on. Again that's just my opinion. It's allways left to the interpenetration of the viewer. You sound pretty young so give it about 20 or 30 years. Come back & watch the movie. Then watch this video of your analysis again. I think you will find it interesting how some things may seem different. I watched this movie again today & I see some things differently from my previous viewings. I catch myself doing that with movies & even books that I revisit. At least I know I'm still thinking. ;-)

The first time I watched this movie I was just a kid. And I recall watching it just because I knew I would see some boobs on it haha. Now I rewatched it thanks to you. The movie is trully amazing and I don't recall getting so emotional about a scene like the last one in the garage, when Chris Cooper's character falls apart. I really felt his pain at that moment and the suffering he felt for failing with his son, who was supposedly having sexy with older man for money.

+Ralph Waldo Picklechips I think the real issue is the audio editing, the cuts between music are really jarring. The content is excellent and about some of my favorite movies so I personally will keep watching, but I see where you're coming from. If you want something similar, I think Every Frame a Painting and Nerdwriter1 have analyses that are just as insightful, but edited better.
