    For the glottal attack “At ako pa ba’y iibigin pa,” “iibigin” is one word meaning “will love”. It is the verb form of the noun “ibig” which means love. ☺️ the point where she made the glottal attack is actually the correct pronunciation of the word and accented as such. To me, the emphasis on the word relates to the intense desire of the singer to be loved. 😌

    Morissette, Dimash and So Hyang are definitely the holy trinity for RUclips reactors. Once again you took a performance that has been reacted to by dozens of other coaches (not gonna say if I've seen every single one cause that might be weird) and delivered multiple unique insights both her technique and the arrangement. The catch breath discussion alone was incredible and I loved that you spent even more time on the crazy long phrase (which is my personal highlight of this performance) than you did the whistles. Mori gets compared to So Hyang a lot and they are obviously different stylistically and tonally and fights about who is better are super boring because they are both great but the one thing they have in common is that they radiate a goodness that just can't be faked. I really don't think there's a ceiling to what she can do internationally if that's what she wants, it's impossible not to be enthralled by her once you get a glimpse.
    Thank you so much for reacting to these great artists, based on quality of content alone you have a criminally low number of subscribers, come on people there's plenty of room on the bandwagon so hop on!

      K Bar,
      Your message seriously inspired me and motivated me to keep doing what I'm doing! I can't lie, sometimes it is really hard to keep up because of constant fights with music labels and them keeping all of the revenue. But it's comments like these and the beautiful community I have that keep me going.
      I agree with you about comparisons. I can understand comparing singers in a way to describe what is technically going on in hopes that it may help the viewer and/or singer better grasp the phenomenon of the vocal instrument. But comparing voices to put one down, has a baseless argument to me. It's all subjective and there's no constructive communication when using a negative tone when comparing.
      Again, I can't thank you enough for your kind words. They mean more than you know. Have a great day!

    • @kbar5821
      @kbar5821 4 года назад +19

      @@jessicasopranonotes I'm glad you appreciate the feedback, there's more than enough negative energy these days and I feel it's on all of us to encourage the people who contribute positively to the world.
      On the subject of tonality and comparisons my one word description of Morissette's tone is that it's warm rather than bright (which is how I would describe So Hyang's tone.) Is that just completely up to physiology or is it something the vocalist can control or maybe even change permanently by manipulating placement and such? Would love to see a video describing various tone archetypes with examples to illustrate. Not that you don't have a million other things are clamoring for or anything 😂.

    • @Lisaluv2

    • @jessicasopranonotes
      @jessicasopranonotes  4 года назад +12

      @@kbar5821 For the most part, tone is something physiologically "preset." However, there are ways to manipulate your tone and create a brighter/darker sound. For some singers, this is actually encouraged if their tone leans too heavily on one side and not the other. That being said, the key word is manipulate. Meaning, it would have to be a conscious choice every time they'd want to achieve that sound until it becomes a habit to where they don't have to think about it as much. That's a great video idea. I have been getting some requests for videos outside of reaction videos which makes me excited! I will write that idea down 🤗

    Omg I just made a comment again because I’m also a linguist and she made me realize that too! Most languages has their silent letters. But for us Filipinos, it is really easy for us to speak or sing another language because our language tagalog itself can pronounce and enunciate every single letter of a word. But that’s not the case for other languages with silent letters on their vocabulary. That’s why most filipino singers have a huge vocal range. Omg This girl is a genius. I love youuuu 🤍🤍🤍🔥🔥🔥

    The "i" pronounced twice is a conjugation of the verb "ibig" usually meaning "to love". "iibigin" is a conjugation of this word meaning it will happen in the future, as in "I WILL LOVE ..."

    Hi. A Filipino here. That glottal attack word is "iibigin" that means "going to love" . The lyrics was "..at ako pa ba'y iibigin pa?" (Are you going to love me back?). This song by the way is about unrequited love and for the hopeless romantic. I love watching how you reacted whenever she was belting. Seriously, Morisette Amon is a precious jewel of the Philippines. I appreciate your analysis too. So professional.

    “At ako pa ba’y iibigin pa” means “Will you still love me?” The root word of the word you’re referring to is “ibig,” conjugated more commonly as the noun “pag-ibig” or love. “Iibigin” is the future tense of the verb. It’s neither two separate words nor a compound word, but good guess. 😊 Love this analysis

I think female singers strive to be Diva's and miss the journey of joy in their singing. There is no greater feeling then exploring being an artist using your voice because the connection goes straight to your soul. Can I recommend her a cappella version of Rise up or her salute to Broadway version of Defying Gravity. Either of these songs will give you a sense of her versatility which is limitless.

    Morissette is the greatest singer/vocalist to ever step foot on this planet. A freak of nature. She is truly indeed, the "Asia's Phoenix", an unstoppable force of vocal power and prowess, a symbol for everyone to rise up from the ashes amidst this chaotic times. No one in a human form can execute strenuous vocal skills in one song performance. Her insanely vocal range, control, techniques, dynamics, power, belt, low notes, growls, squeaks, and her signature whistle tones after hitting a high note all in one breath. Can't imagine, how she did all of that. Maybe she forgets on how to be a human, again. It's way too much to handle, inevitably we're having an absolute eargasm. Her music is a gift. A beacon of light when we're lost in this dark times, the warmth in our hearts in this cold life. Listening to her sang send chills to one's soul even after a thousand times. Her entire existence validates that there is still hope and love left in this world.

    The "glottal" attack you meant referring to vowel "i" (pronounced as "e") of the lyric "iibigin" (literally means will love with "ibig" as root word, which means love). In tagalog you have to repeat the initail letter or letters of the word to indicate the action in future tense. So regarding your question, iibigin is only one word.

    About the glottal stop that you recognized: The Tagalog language is highly phonetic, every vowel is pronounced as an individual syllable. For the word "iibigin", because there is no consonant to separate the two i's, the glottal stop is utilized.

    Love love love how technical your vocal analysis is! And so impressed by your ability to take into account sounds of a language you don't know!
    For your question regarding the /iʔi/ glottal stop, the word she was singing was 'iibigin', which in Tagalog means 'will love'. As an agglutinative language, Tagalog does involve a lot of compounding, particularly in its verb conjugation using a pattern called reduplication. To get the future tense of 'ibig' (to love), the first syllable is duplicated, and then the - in suffix is added to the end. And as you mentioned, as soon as that i - is duplicated word-initially, a glottal stop is also added to create a bit of separation from the original /i/ vowel. You seemed genuinely curious about what is going on linguistically, so I hope this helps confirm your suspicion :)
