  • Perhaps no musical instrument is more evocative of China than the erhu (二胡), but its origins are in central Asia: The erhu is one of several instruments historically known as "huqin" (barbarian's fiddle).
    In this video, Liu Hong (刘虹) introduces the erhu and plays the classic folk tune "Running River" (江河水).

    my dad had one when i was a kid and would play it to me when i asked, but after my parents divorced, he went back to live in Cambodia. i got to visit/see him for the first time in 9 years last summer. it turns out he sold it to make money a long time ago and we were both upset about it, but he was happy to see that i was wearing the same wide span fisherman hat he bought me when i was 3. sadly though that hat disappeared when the wind blew it into the sea.

    The Erhu speaks of such a beautiful sadness. It is hard to imagine what the world would be without the lament of this instrument.

  • @GLL1912
    @GLL1912 10 лет назад +65

    The Erhu uses an underhand bow grip to play. Playing the inner string requires your two middle fingers to press the hairs towards you to play the D string. A string needs the player to pull the bow outwards away from the player. The human-like effects is the results of the fingering glisandro skills as well as the aid of a absence of a finger board. If you're looking for an erhu that sounds like hers in the video. Go for Violet Sandalwood or Aged Rosewood Erhus with snake skins that have big even scales. Only that sort of Erhu can give the "Wailing and Nasal Characteristics. Hav fun peeps!

    What beautiful melody from the heart of this Erhu musician as she turns emotion into a sound that evokes a certain sadness.
    It reminds me of a quote made by Maria Doyle Kennedy when she played Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's 1st Wife. : "If I had to choose between extreme sorrow and extreme happiness, I would always choose sorrow, for when you are happy you forget about spiritual things, you forget about God.But in your sorrow, He is always with you" end quote. And so, does not this Oriental Sound affect each of us in a unique fashion?

    @Harlequin374 Hi - I don't think anyone answered your question yet. I just purchased my first Erhu and am enjoying learning this beautiful instrument. As you can see, the bow is very different from the violin bow, as the bow goes BETWEEN the strings. Also, you actually are supposed to touch the bow hairs to play the instrument, which is something I would dare not do on my own violin! It is a wider bow because you have to put pressure on the bow to change between the D and the A string.

    Adam Woods, well the Erhu bow does resembles the baroque bows in a way just that the Erhu's bow frog provides no extra pressure to the bow hairs. Unlike the taut violin bow style, the Erhu bow hairs are loose. Taut bows would choke the instrument and this is when the flexibility of the bamboo bow rod plays his important role. Erhu bows will bend and flex while playing.

      I think buying the more expensive one will last you a life time or use a professional person to make one since sometimes its usually ship in the trucks and some things may move every where and then causing the Erhu to be more less of a life time as in it'll make it more fragile since you don't know what happens in the truck so ill go back to china one day to get a new one but now i think ill get a extreme shipping from hong kong or Beijing or china since if you buy it directly from china it'll kinda last me a life time but every now and then you need to get it tweaked everyonce in a while :|
