- Perhaps no musical instrument is more evocative of China than the erhu (二胡), but its origins are in central Asia: The erhu is one of several instruments historically known as "huqin" (barbarian's fiddle).
In this video, Liu Hong (刘虹) introduces the erhu and plays the classic folk tune "Running River" (江河水).
See www.danwei.com/... for more.
The range of emotion expressed from this 2 stringed instrument is heavenly
tarkineWild Before i heard this instrument i thought only violon can do this
Stoned Khajiit no..? This is more on the cello side
It brings the goosebumps up on my neck. So Beautiful.
Little late but it’s absolutely beautiful
I watched a guy at a train station place in the place I live in Canada. Little Chinese man ahaha I gave him 15 bucks for his CD of all thus type of music he played and I forgot while I got the on the bus I was pre mad but the sound lives on forever such a piece
I was in Seattle today and heard a Chinese man playing this in the street. I simply HAD to look it up because I think it's extremely beautiful to hear!
+Kenzaroo YES! I know what you're talking about. That guy is pretty well-known for that lol
really?? that's so nice :)
+Kenzaroo Are you talking about the guy who plays by Pacific place? If so, I agree!
yep!
Kenzaroo , I couldn't agree more. I was in Central Park today and was lucky enough to witness a man playing it. Such a relaxing beautiful sound!
The sound instantly sends chills down my spine, And makes me feel at peace. there is no instrument like it...
same bro...
for us, its usually a sad sound... its often used to play sad music... like chinese blues if you will
There actually is an Instrument that’s very close to the Erhu, sound wise.
It’s called the THERAMIN.
@@nextleveljourney6612 oh
For real tho
Oh, an ERHU! I always vulgarly called it "Chinese violin"...
I will sleep smarter tonight!
dany your definition of the erhu would bring many folk to an appropriate site. :)
Oh, A Banjo!! I always vulgary called it "american guitar"..
Though the banjo and guitar differ greatly as musical instruments, not to mention the Chinese also have an instrument that is similar to the banjo, so...
Alex Blanco Oh a drum with a guitar neck sticking out of it, oh it's called a banjo?
***** That would be the SanXian 三弦. The predecessor of the japanese Shamisen.
my dad had one when i was a kid and would play it to me when i asked, but after my parents divorced, he went back to live in Cambodia. i got to visit/see him for the first time in 9 years last summer. it turns out he sold it to make money a long time ago and we were both upset about it, but he was happy to see that i was wearing the same wide span fisherman hat he bought me when i was 3. sadly though that hat disappeared when the wind blew it into the sea.
+eksangha1 Wow that hit me right in the feels
Something about that seems kind of poetic, maybe it's just the music getting to me, but that last bit of your comment was sorta beautiful...
And then everyone clapped
Obviously it's mixed feelings in your life, but that's a beautiful little story.
Something about a hat going to the sea is poetic.
I love the sound the the erhu makes
yasminload63 it has an amazing sound
I have liked the erhu ever since I heard one.
I originally heard the erhu in legend of korra (yea im a nerd) then in lots of Legend of Zelda songs.
I could never put my fingeron what the instrument was
The Erhu speaks of such a beautiful sadness. It is hard to imagine what the world would be without the lament of this instrument.
The Erhu uses an underhand bow grip to play. Playing the inner string requires your two middle fingers to press the hairs towards you to play the D string. A string needs the player to pull the bow outwards away from the player. The human-like effects is the results of the fingering glisandro skills as well as the aid of a absence of a finger board. If you're looking for an erhu that sounds like hers in the video. Go for Violet Sandalwood or Aged Rosewood Erhus with snake skins that have big even scales. Only that sort of Erhu can give the "Wailing and Nasal Characteristics. Hav fun peeps!
100% accurate
Here after watching Legend of Korra, the ending theme is so beautiful I almost thought it was a human voice and an instrument together
So beautiful, put's the violin in it's place! What an extraordinary instrument played by an expert, with such a haunting but beautiful melody. Thank you for the music!
So much better than the violin. But when played by someone who is not good at it, sounds like a cat's being tortured. Really!
I remember hearing the Erhu the first time when I was 8 years old at London's China town during the Chinese New Year celebrations, I stopped and listening to it and was instantly captured by its mesmerising haunting melody.
yes ive always thought it was a very expressionate instrument especially the feelings of sadness , loss and regret but still gives one of the most pleasant sounds of all the worlds musical instruments
Ya er wu used to play for the sad song.
I have it with a player playing the Titanic. I loved it & didn't even realize it was the Titanic till my DIL told me. There are a lot, or at least were a lot, of erhu songs available online. I don't remember now if I bought them on iTunes on some other way but I bought a lot by Cao YuRong. I hope I got that name right. He or she played beautifully.
The Erhu is my number one favourite instrument. I first learned of its existence through the Kung Fu Panda Movies and that amazing Hans Zimmer soundtrack!!!
The Erhu will always be instantly recognizable by sight and sound. It is the epitome of beautiful Chinese music. As a lover of Chinese culture and music, this, alongside the Guzheng, is my most favorite instrument.
是真的美丽和太好听的!
It makes me cry but in a good way, like forgiving my rivals and my mistakes I had done in the past
This is my absolute favorite instrument. When I was a kid I had this DVD of children’s stories that were illustrated and animated and there was one about a little girl and her dad and her erhu and I loved that story so much because of the erhu. I forgot about it when I got a bit older but I always had these flashbacks to that instrument so I looked up “Chinese violin” and found that sound again. I’m so glad I did.
It's just like the erhu is pouring out it's emotion...so melancholic...thank you.
oh my goodness, this such a tranquil type of music...love, love, love it!!!
Such an emotional instrument.
So glad they used this instrument for the Dragon theme in BOTW. It's such a magical and relaxing instrument
Love this instrument. She's right it's really good at representing sadness and suffering.
I first heard this sound in the musical backdrop to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and particularly in the tracks 'Yearning Of The Sword'.and 'The Silk Road'. The sound is so beautiful I just had to research it a little and I'm so glad I did.
I always recognize this instrument among all the strings, so unique
I don't think I've ever heard something more beautiful.
I love the sound of the erhu... It sounds almost like a human voice at times. Hauntingly beautiful
Er hu brings out sorrow feelings
Just 2 strings and it so expressive. I love it. Calming.
Oh so beautiful! I didn't knew this so gentle instrument ❤
So far away, but so many things in common.
From the Southeast USA.
Great Video. Thanks.
.
I'm learning how to play the erhu.
That's nice!!!!! Good luck :3
Adrian Nicollas Thanks. IT's really hard
Did you??
Did ya learn it?
Did you do it? Don't leave us waiting, man!
This is such a beautiful video. I love the artist's comments about the erhu and her playing is magnificent. Thank you for sharing this with the world!
One of the best songs I've heard the Erhu in was the 'Flamerock Refuge' theme from Borderlands 2 'Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep'. I absolutely love this song.
That piece of music is very sorrowful. It's amazing that one string can produce so much empathy. I'd like to hear some happy pieces!
The sound is like a combination of the flute, violin, and guitar. I love it.
came here from twoset violin and i'm grateful, this is a beautiful instrument.
I play violin and was looking up videos and what not and now I'm here lol. The sound of this instrument is beautiful and so I don't know like puts you in a trance. It's weird looking though because of the way she bows it. I couldn't imagine playing my violin like that. It's a wonderful instrument and very pleasing to the ear.
It inevitably water my eyes, you are amazing
I've seen an old man play one here in Toronto many times. It's really a marvelous instrument, I love how it sounds!
So calming and beautiful ☺️ one of my favorite instruments
Saiunkoku Monogatari brought me here, watched it years ago, i was just listening to Hajimari no Kaze and remembered about the beauty of the Erhu...
in Betawi culture (Jakarta) we have 3 musical instruments that are the same as this because of the acculturation of Chinese culture in the past but a little different because at the ends we use coconut shells and we call them Tehyan, Kongahyan and Sukong ❤️
Absolutely beautiful. I really want to learn how to play like that.
I LOVE it, Danwei TV. Bravo! This is real good music 🎵
The cleanest tremolo I've ever seen on any bowed instrument.
Discovered this instrument on garageband, its my favorite to play!
Legend of Korra
Julian Kingsley facts
Beautiful and I'm only 9 years late hearing it. I just discovered the erhu yesterday. Thanks.
What beautiful melody from the heart of this Erhu musician as she turns emotion into a sound that evokes a certain sadness.
It reminds me of a quote made by Maria Doyle Kennedy when she played Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's 1st Wife. : "If I had to choose between extreme sorrow and extreme happiness, I would always choose sorrow, for when you are happy you forget about spiritual things, you forget about God.But in your sorrow, He is always with you" end quote. And so, does not this Oriental Sound affect each of us in a unique fashion?
Wonderful music from an ancient and complex culture.......
This is easily my favorite stringed instrument.
This is so amazing instrument! I am from Ukraine, but i love chinese music! From my childhood i fell in love with this instrument, this is my favourite one! It really express China and human's feelings... I love it. This is unbelievable..
Thank you for explaining about this instrument. Your playing is a great demonstration of the sad expression of the instrument. 💖💖💖👏👏👏👏👏
I really love the sound of that instrument. It reminds me of the beautiful Chinese culture and history.
I tried to find the name of the instrument to certain music that i listen to and i finally found it! Such a soothing sound.
The sound is beautifully haunting.
The band Chthonic really makes amazing use of the erhu
This is beautifully mesmerizing
Well played. Such a sad and distinctive timbre.
so i first heard its sound when listening to House of flying Daggers OST- Lovers Instramental and thought what a beautiful sound i was hearing. Thankfully in the comments someone had listed some instrumments and i found out about Erhu. It produces such expecive and soulful sounds it really took me by surpise that it had only two strings
@Harlequin374 Hi - I don't think anyone answered your question yet. I just purchased my first Erhu and am enjoying learning this beautiful instrument. As you can see, the bow is very different from the violin bow, as the bow goes BETWEEN the strings. Also, you actually are supposed to touch the bow hairs to play the instrument, which is something I would dare not do on my own violin! It is a wider bow because you have to put pressure on the bow to change between the D and the A string.
wow this is a beautiful instrument only two strings and a masterpiece is born…
These instruments sound so damn beautiful
This instrument is easily the most recognizable of the Chinese instruments. As soon as you hear it, you just feel serene.
This is a beautiful instrument. I've heard it alot in many ballads and songs regarding nature. Thankyou for the explanations. Ni Hao.
simply beautiful
I'm half Pinoy and I can say proudly I LOVE IT!!!!
I finally know the name of my favorite instrument.
Absolutely love this sound.
Ended up here, thanks to Kung Fu Panda ^.^
I would love to try playing one.....someday!
It makes me cry and remember China.
(I'm not chinese and never been to China.)
Just. Beautiful.
Wow! She's pulling theremin-esque sounds out of that instrument!
Erhu predates the Theremin by roughly 1000 years. . .so it might be fairer to say the Thermin pulls out Erhu-like sounds!
jgrossma ;)
Sublime!
And brilliant technique, thank you so much for sharing!
A few years ago my friend from India got married and, in the Indian tradition, the wedding was huge and awesome.
At the cocktail hour before the reception, they had someone playing this instrument in the dining room with a percussionist. It was the first time I'd ever heard it before and I was mesmerized by the sound. Being a HUGE music fan, I grabbed a seat right in front of them and spent close to an hour watching and listening closely. I annoyed my girlfriend in the process, it was worth it.
That was very beautiful. Thank you.
When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.
I love how she gets lost in playing her music which this instrument. So beautiful
I FINALLY FOUND IT. THIS INSTRUMENT, I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND UNTIL NOW.
I love the sound!
Adam Woods, well the Erhu bow does resembles the baroque bows in a way just that the Erhu's bow frog provides no extra pressure to the bow hairs. Unlike the taut violin bow style, the Erhu bow hairs are loose. Taut bows would choke the instrument and this is when the flexibility of the bamboo bow rod plays his important role. Erhu bows will bend and flex while playing.
The most popular instrument in Asia *(and for good reason).*
I love her Chinese, it's so clear.
The erhu is just lovely
Its so beautiful..
The Legend of Korra soundtrack uses this, and it sounds amazing. Wow.
i want one...
Go to eBay
Its alot of money to buy it
Defiantly my favorite instrument
Simply beautiful.
The sound from Fiddlement. Great...
THIS IS THE FUCKING INSTRUMENT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR. I hear it in a lot of eastern styilized music and could never figure out what it was. Absolutely heavenly. Time to get one.
This brought tears to my eyes. I'm thirty-one years old and have never played an instrument, but I think I want to buy an erhu. Only thing is that the music is so sad, and I worry that playing it will make me sad.
beautiful instrument and tone
I know, now of course. It was hard for me to find it because I kept searching for Japanese instruments. This is one of my favorite instruments to hear.
Chthonic brought me here who are a super talented metal band that makes wise use of the Erhu for anyone who didn’t know ;)
Master oogway. You shall rest in piece
Indeed
Nice pfp, by the way
Most of these can cost to hundreds of dollars man i need to start savin now
I think buying the more expensive one will last you a life time or use a professional person to make one since sometimes its usually ship in the trucks and some things may move every where and then causing the Erhu to be more less of a life time as in it'll make it more fragile since you don't know what happens in the truck so ill go back to china one day to get a new one but now i think ill get a extreme shipping from hong kong or Beijing or china since if you buy it directly from china it'll kinda last me a life time but every now and then you need to get it tweaked everyonce in a while :|
If you're talking just hundreds, that's very cheap for an instrument.
That is beautiful...
Amazing! Very expressive instrument and played very well!
Such a beautiful instrument.
I always wondered what this thing was...and now I finally know.
