I bought one and self taught myself. Im no master but i can play with backing tracks or with people and if you have a basic understanding of music theory for stringed instruments its just passing the hurdle of bowing correctly. Thats the hardest part. You can find them for 100 USD on amazon and ebay that will help you learn these techniques. You dont wanna go play a concert with them but you can hone your skill untill you can afford an upgrade. Plus its one of the funnest instruments ive learned. One of the favorite i own
1:01 in Betawi culture (Jakarta) we have 3 musical instruments that are the same as this because of the acculturation of Chinese culture in the past but a little different because at the ends we use coconut shells and we call them Tehyan, Kongahyan and Sukong ❤️
I love all Chinese instruments.. Currently, I'm learning the guzheng, since it's easier and thus I can be semi-self-taught. Semi because I won't have a teacher, but I am using RUclips videos and other sources. But someday, I'd like to learn the erhu as well. So beautiful. Also, for anyone wondering, I don't have a teacher because there's very few of them in Texas. Unfortunately not many people know of or use Asian instruments in the US, so it's hard to find teachers for erhus and guzhengs. There are online teachers for the guzheng, though, and probably the erhu too.. So I may look into those eventually. :)
If you live in or near a city with a Chinatown or a large Chinese-American population, you could ask around. You never know...there might just be a local teacher you can hire.
omggg I need one x.x it reminds me of the violin and the cello I've played both , I would so love to learn this instrument and the Guqin and the flute.
Yo this takes me back to 2008 with The Last Airbender and Kung Fu Panda using this instrument. I have always wonderd what instrument they used to make it sound so old-timey and now I know thanks to this video.
Hi Sung Wah, the problem I have with my erhu is that when I try to play it, it just makes a screeching/scratching noise. What could be the problem? Rosin? I am not sure how much rosin I am supposed to put on it. This is my first Erhu I have ever owned. If anyone else has any advice for me on how to get my erhu to play, I would be grateful. I have the strings tuned, the string tied properly around the two wires, and the bridge is properly in place at the resonator.
Joel Akeldama I don't know about the erhu but I think all stringed instruments take a lot of practice to get a decent sound. Sorry my comment is late, hope I helped☺
I agree with Joel, if you've ever heard a person playing the violin for the first time, oh boy you would not want to be in the same room. These rules apply. As long as sound is coming out of the instrument you have put enough rosin on.
Thinking of getting one to try. My ancestry is from Guangzhou, and my grandmother loved to listen to Cantonese opera. A few years ago when I was 50 I started playing violin and viola, so what's another string instrument?
They are like the equivalent of a violin in sound but they are build more like a drum (skin) and a guitar. Kind of a cool instrument for sure very neat sounding and very interesting shape. Definitely beautiful.
So the three instruments shown in the video would be called, in Renaissance parlance, the huqin consort; a lot of instruments in Europe back then were made in consorts, with different sizes of instruments at different pitches
Just found one at a thrift store. The bow looks wrong and it’s missing some pieces but if I can make it make a sound it’s worth it. Looking forward to learning.
Hi Mr Tan, the new erhu you recommend in the clip sounds great! 3 months ago I bought one that looks and sounds quite similar to the one on demo. After practising for sometime I feel the sound is not as good as before, sounds very coarse. I was told my erhu is still not seasoned yet. Please advise.
seasoned can mean that the snake skin is still changing the more you play. Your instrument will go through stages of sounding different and better as you play but I'm not sure it should be getting worse than before.
There are a lot of cheap options on e-bay. I guess they'd work for a beginner. But if you're looking for something with a bit better quality gurantee check out a site called soundofmountain. Their stuff looks quite good and also has very good reviews. They also have sample videos on here under the same name (i think)
Thank you for this wonderful introduction. Just bought an ehru but... cannot make any sound, please make a lesson to explain how to get a sound. maybe the strings are not tight enough? maybe the angle of the bow is wrong? this ehru does not sing
On mine it didn't make a sound because I forgot to add rosin. And to get it to work you need to scratch the top of the rosin with a penny or something to get the dust up. Rub the rosin on both sides of the bow string, directly from the block of rosin. If it's a first time, you need to rub it on the bow for a long time, I read that it was 3 to 5 minutes of rubbing rosin on the bow. Hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing your skills on playing Erhu but I am completely new to such instrument. What impressed me most is its’s beautiful sound it makes when played. Though you have played its notes like Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La and Thi almost before the end of your video, but I am still lost about what fingers to use whether on inner or outer strings. If you could help me on this, I would greatly appreciate!
Thinking of getting one of these as opposed to a violin. I’ve seen one on sale for £32 brand new on eBay. It’s made in China, but but honest with me... it’s bound to be crap, isn’t it? What sort of price should I expect to pay for my first one? I’m very poor, and can’t afford much. Also, am I right in thinking that the string doesn’t actually come into contact with the neck (equivalent of fret board)?
Gardevoir Sans buy the book《中国二胡考级曲集上下册》,you can practice song from level one to level ten by following the song script. Different finger technics are required in each level.
I purchased one a few weeks ago. I'm learning as I go. I did take notice how you are controlling the pitch of the sound. I can't tell if you are pressing downward or to the side of the string? I noticed that when I press down on the string, the string is pulled away from the 'string' that's wrapped around the neck to D and A string. It didn't seem to do that with you. I feel like I am pressing down on it incorrectly. Or maybe too hard. Anyways. Thank you for the demonstration.
I love how it has a lot of treble in the tone making it sound like it is played through a singing card speaker also I am attempting to make one from a soupcan any advice
so i am understanding this right, the 3 different erhu that you present, are just erhuhs but with different tuning? i like the last one the deep sounded how much it cost to buy one and sent it to Germany?
You probably know that a guitar string is plucked and the sound decays over time. What happens is that the plucking action sends the string into a rotational movement, if you look very closely, the string goes in circles. Because you put your finger behind a fret, the flesh of your finger does not stop that movement and the result is the sound you know! You also know that putting your fleshy finger mutes that movement very quickly. An Erhu, or any stringed instrument, uses a different principle. The bow hair has rosin applied and has very tiny hair extensions. Pulling the bow across the string continuously grasps the string and moves it horizontally, but because it can't go any further, the little hair extension releases causing the string to snap back horizontally. Then it's pulled again and this cycle repeats. The movement is continuously horizontal, so you can think of this like plucking the string very rapidly! That's why the flesh of a finger is not enough to mute the sound, the string keeps getting grasped and released so quickly it never stops vibrating even with your finger on it. The same applies to any stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, etc).
Can someone help me? I am absolutely enamored with the song he is playing at 4:16, but I can’t quite make out what he is saying the title of the tune is.

Put ur bow on both strings. Gently put hand towards u, one string. Reset on both, push away other string. Of course make sure ur in middle of bow
