After a full week of living out of Yeti we wanted to give a full review on it. Overall I was extremely happy with it but I was a little disappointed that it didn't function as well as I would have liked for what we used it for. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations, maybe I was doing it wrong. Hoping I can get some feedback. Great product though and we HIGHLY recommend it.

Something to keep in mind... Ice you get at most quick marts is pretty much barely frozen. They keep their coolers near 30* rather than down say to around 0*F, so the ice melts fairly quickly. You might want to check out making your own "Yeti Ice" to see if that helps. Also, throw a sleeping bag over it when it's in the car to help insulate it further. Good luck!

I don't think people understand this point enough. I bartender for my family so I've been buying store bought ice and it melts by the time I drive it home which is 3mins from my house.
my yeti 75 lasts 10 full days in the Texas summer heat. You have to properly prep your cooler, drinks, food, etc. Open minimally, use a secondary small cooler bag for beer etc, stuff your gonna be grabbing every few minutes. I may grab one bag of ice to top off mid week if I'm out and about. Ratio of items to ice is extremely important as well. It took me a year of testing and trying to find the perfect methods for Texas summers. You talked about adding ice but pre-cooling is something different. 2 days before my trip i ice it down completely then empty it the day of my trip. I then fill with only cool items, nothing hot and using a combination of yeti ice, frozen water bottles and the best ice i can find. not all ice is the same, you don't want to buy ice that looks wet, etc. Keep on trying, test different things, you can get it to last past a week, without adding ice in the toughest conditions when done right.

Adding those freezable blue ice ice pack squares before adding the ice will significantly double the time of keeping ice without melting. Also, chill or freeze contents before adding to cooler. Opening cooler frequently when it's hot outside will attribute to a more rapid melt.

I won a 35 a year ago. You really have to prep the cooler and the things you put into it for it to work the best. You're better off freezing 2 liter bottles of water and using them as the cooling source (less surface area to melt out compared to ice cubes. Before using it on a long trip put ice alone in for a couple days to drop the internal temp. Freeze any food/drink possible before putting it in there. These little things will help it last for a few days at a time. For maximum effect use dry ice!

For the next excursion, get a small amount of dry ice. Put it in the bottom first then add a bag of ice on top of that. Then follow with drinks and food on the top.

You did not mention pre-cool. You mentioned smashing it full of ice, meaning it would not get a seal. Also you didn't talk about ratios

I went through the same process. I've been using a rotomolded Canyon Cooler for camping and off-road trips. I've been able to survive and do about 3-4 days with good ice retention. However to get maximum ice retention you really have to prep the things really well. You have to pre-chill (which I don't always do), you have to fill it with the right content to ice ration, you have to limit the amount of times you open the lid, and you really have to be cognizant about how you stack items. I ended up putting my meats in the bottom and then would have to dig through layers of ice, bust up the ice that stuck together, and then carefully re-stack the items. Although the volume seems like a lot it really fills up fast when you put in cold drinks, food, and the correct amount of ice. It always seems like you need more space.
I finally bit the bullet and got a fridge. I haven't used it yet but I think the simplicity will make it well worth it. It seems that everyone who goes the fridge route never looks back and wonders why they didn't get the fridge a lot earlier. I definitely think if you're going to be doing more trips and lengthier trips that the fridge will be worth the investment.

I guess I don't understand the pre cooling processing I figure if I have a good ice to food ratio then why wouldn't it technically be pre cooled by the 2nd or third day of use. Lol
Gotta chill the cooler and fill ice all the way to to top close the gap of air that can be in there
I have both a yeti 65 and an ARB fridge freezer. Each serve their own purpose. I like the freezing of several 2 liter bottles to help keep it cool with less water sloshing around. I use the ARB for food and 1/2 and 1/2 and the yeti is used for closed container drinks.

It helps if the contents were cold prior to putting in the cooler. Also lowering the temperature of the cooler helps. I’m thinking y’all had a lot stuff and probably not as much ice as you think. I’m not a Yeti rep or anything, but I do have quite a few...
+dame6661 I appreciate that insight. I'm going to retest it in a controlled environment and see what I can come up with also.
I suggest watching videos on how to pack a cooler and ways to keep it colder, as I own a Yeti roadie 20 and I put a bag of ice in it and kept it in room temperature opened it over 50 times and the ice didn't know for over three days. And that was with no ice refills no dry ice no ice packs no pre chill drinks just drinks and ice with way over 50 opens.
If you’re taking drinks out from the bottom naturally ice is going to drop inches throughout the day.

Use a two-to-one ratio of ice to food and do not put warm stuff in a cold cooler and pre chill the cooler before placing stuff in. The professionals will actually take their cooler and put it into a deep freeze before going on expeditions. They will also pre freeze or pre chill anything going in the cooler

@@FreedomCrawler well you live and learn like anything else. You're probably also find out that if you tip it over it will leak water from the lid. That's normal too as it is rated for dry ice the gas have to escape. So it could slosh around in your vehicle. Good luck it really is the best cooler out there

I bought an RTIC 65. Basically the same cooler, just a different company. I had the same issue on my last 4 day trip.
Most ppl don't understand different ices, freeze yeti ice lay in bottom (it refreezes melted ice witch extends life ) also freeze gallon jug water set in cooler to pre cool cooler makes difference if cooler already cold to start.
You need to pre cool your cooler to start and also if you are constantly draining the water that will make the ice melt faster. Yeti specifically tells you in the owners manual not to empty the water unless necessary because your cooler will stay cooler longer if the water remains.

start putting your cooler in a cool place before you put ice in. fill it with ice water before you use it then, dump it and fill with ice.
The documentation that comes with the cooler says to pre-chill, then fill completely and even explains the the basic science why those things should be done.
Agreed, and their warranty department said we had a bad seal. Replaced it and it worked even better
If you put a case or 12 pack of warm drinks in there it will KILL your ice in a hurry... I freeze several 1 gallon ice ream buckets and keep as many of them in there as I can. In 8 days after the bag ice was gone I still had square blocks from the ice cream buckets.
I bought 2 RTIC coolers. A 40 hardside and a 30 soft. It takes slightly more room than one 65 but I get to use the soft as a "refrigerator". A three in thick ice block i make and then put a cutting board on top of leaves a nice and tall refrigerator for 3-4 days pretty easily. This leaves the 40 to be opened far less which is a huge factor. Cost of two RTIC is far less than one Yeti.
had same issue with my roadie 20, they said there was some sort of manufacturing defect, they over night shipped me a new one, and paid for my return shipping.

As I’m waiting for my Haul to come in the mail I’m trying to learn how to maximize my ice... maybe I’m wrong, but if you’re constantly adding warm or room temperature things, doesn’t that significantly shorten your ice lifespan?

A vehicle will get up to 120 degrees in less than 20 minuets. Even when it is relatively cool outside.
You do realize when you put warm things in a cooler with ice, the ice is trying to cool down the warm stuff and the warm stuff is trying to warm the ice. So there will be ice loss. Also if you are opening the door all the time that is fanning and no cooler will work. Again opening the door, lets warm air in and melts ice. It doesn't create temperature like a fridge. It maintains the temperature of whatever is added.

I wouldn't complain if that was my cooler, I had a yeti a few years back and it never held ice more than 6 hours so I wasn't too upset when it got stolen lol

I work for solar plastic and we make them from scratch you gotta fill it with ice and .ake sure the latches stay pined close ice should last 2 weeks it dose in my 65 all the time

Jeep_ Noob hey, no hard feelings, but yes I was talking about the review. It was not very well thought out. I wish you well on your trips, but this review gets about a 2 out of ten. It sounded like you guys really wanted a refrigerator.

We are going to test it out again this week, should be better. I completely agree that the review wasn’t the best but we wanted to review it in this way for anyone else wanting to use it for that purpose as well. I’d prefer this to a refrigerator as it’s more portable.

the thing with all coolers you need to pre charge them that is filling it up with ice for 24 hours before you put anything in it. then you need to layer the ice with the food or drinks. so you need to start with ice then the drinks more ice and so on. if you don't precharg them it wont work. also it is normal for the ice to melt it keeps ice longer if you don't drain the water out to
+Jim Hale well I filled it up with ice the day before we left and then I kept ice in it for 7 continuous days. Wouldn't that be the same as precharging it? I would think by the 3rd or 4th day full of ice it would be precharged enough right?
Agreed on the water thing. We only drained it once in Moab on day 4 because we had way too much water and I refilled the whole thing with ice.

Fill milk jugs with water and freeze in a deep freezer....Store bought ice cubes is not that cold and contains a lot of air space.
I agree, ours had a bad seal and Yeti replaced it for us.
You need to precool the yeti with a sacrificial bag of ice. You also need to precool the things that are going in. That’s if you’re planning a multi day trip.

I don’t know, my Yeti’s have always kept ice. Don’t get me wrong, of course some is going to melt. If you fill it completely to the brim with ice on day 1 & check it out day 2 there is going to be ice melt. Usually mine keeps ice for 5-7 days before the ice has completely melted. I don’t put that much thought into it, I might put an ice pack or 2 in there before if I remember. But I don’t think it’s that big of a deal if not.

It’s a ice chest not a refrigerator..duh... but alright video. Try putting some rock salt in there next time, just don’t eat it.

So you’re reviewing something you don’t know how to use in the first place?! A two minute trip to the Yeti website will show you how to prepare and pack your cooler for optimal efficiency. Firstly you can’t put room temperature food and drinks into a cooler with ice and expect miracles. 2nd, every time you open the cooler it allows warm air to enter the cooler thus decreasing efficiency, so you need to think ahead and minimise open times. 3rd, I hope your other reviews actually have some research go into them, but your puppies are cute.
I agree, we do have some good looking pups. We knew that the way we used it is not entirely meant for what we did with it but that’s what the review was geared towards. If you wanted to use it for a week would it work out. They did send us a new seal for the lid as well and it’s worked a lot better since then

If you're going in and out of the cooler it's not much better than a Coleman but yes it's still better. The whole keeps ice for 5 days is filling it up with ice and not opening it again.

Awesome let me know how it goes. I know with all my Yeti's I've never seen the ice I put in it at the beginning of a trip lasting the whole time. I've always had to add ice. Perhaps not a often as I would with a normal cooler true but never gotten a week out of it. This is going in and out of it on camping, wheeling, and mtb trips though. I have gotten good results though just filling it up and leaving it, not going in and out of it, ie transporting cold stuff.
I agree with others here that for overlanding the best option is a fridge you can wire up to the vehicle.
Every manufacture has a bad apple every once in a while, have you contacted Yeti yet? Sounds just like a bad cooler.

same here, I was not stating anything bad about the company. I personally would expect more biased on what many of my co-workers tell me about the Yeti they have. I would definitely like to see an update video once you test again.

In a 7 minute video you really don't give people much information. You don't say if you pre-cool your cooler like Yeti suggests before putting your food in it. You just say you kept adding ice which isn't the same thing at all. Also, you don't say how much ice versus food you put in your cooler. You don't say if you bought pre-chilled drinks or put the drinks in your fridge to cool first before loading them in the cooler. If your drinks aren't cold when putting them in the cooler then the ice will just be used to lower the temp of the drinks and you're basically wasting your ice. All that is useful information that, for some strange reason, you just don't provide.

Erika Mander You just buy a couple bags of ice the night before you plan on using the cooler and let it sit in the cooler over night. That will pre cool it and you’ll be good to go.

+dustin schaefer maybe so. It did great for what it was but I think I just expected it to do more. I'd never had one like this before so I wasn't for sure how it would work out. It worked great for what it is though.

Is so weird how it didnt hold ice like they said? When I went to a show they had the yeti cups cooler and what not, they said the number of the cooler represents the pounds of ice it holds.. I get it yall put ice and yall thought thats it is a yeti it will hold. It sucks that it wasnt what yall were planing on. Theres videos of ppl that show how the cool looks after 12 hours then after 24hr and blah blah the ice goes down ...after looking at the videos I kinda had a idea of what Im getting into..I wanna say yall werent on the same page . It can hold ice but it doesnt mean it will hold the shape of the ice if that makes sense? I was mad to hear that yall had ice n items on the basket didnt stay cool now thats would piss me off. Im doing my own research before I buy one. I heard knock offs ppl sale the ones that were return...but !! Yeti ,have good customer services call them up and i bet they will return u another one...oh yes one thing I need to mention I heard that some yeti coolers doors wont stay up look it up onces again yeti will replace it ..so u get what u pay for....I feel like they take care of the buyers ..hope yall get this issue fix...plz update me on this...ur wife didnt look to happy 😕...yall guys make a good couple much love..all the way feom Dallas...

+Rod B thank you. He's a Rottweiler. One of the long haired. I actually got him for a discount from the breeder due to it being a "fault" but he's the best dog I've ever had. Plus when I shave him he looks just like the other Rottweilers. I love that pup.

I guess. It was just our honest opinions of how it went for what we wanted it to do. It’ll help anyone who is thinking the same. Obviously it will work differently for someone in a different situation
