I found Art school teachers to be in some cases very bitter and even jealous of students who obviously had talent. Follow your gut. I was told God and Painting were all dead when I was in Art school. I can't speak for God, but I think painting was only as dead as their careers. That's why they were full time teachers. It really played with my head as I really wanted to paint. But it was drilled in my head it was futile. Follow your gut…..
I sometimes use photos when painting, but if I do so, only photos which I have taken myself. Borremans is even educated photographer - why shouldn't he use his own photos? His video installations remind me a lot to early movies and also black and white photography. I believe someone can combine art media, but care is needed and very good abilities of self-criticism. Using photos remains trikky, but has also opportunities.
Himmelsscheibe Nebra As long as you do more than painting the picture, then I think it's alright to use photos, but if you just make a copy like a robot you could just show the photo instead.
The Artist Cowgirl * I was told the same thing in school - don’t work from photos. I was told a lot of things...lots of “rules”. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that you ultimately have to work in a way you’re most comfortable. Whatever works for you. All their rules and ideas of best practices are a culmination of their experience. At the end of the day we’re responsible for our own experience.
GOLDFISH ! Brilliant docu on a brilliant painter. Expo starting today in Brussels BOZAR. Looking forward to it, will also be a brilliant experience. Thanks for uploading this CANVAS DOCU.
Most interesting no matter who you are , where you are or what language you speak, the think is the same. For artist always this questioning. A hope for something more and surprise (or is it relieve) when seeing it. We see it because we know it, what it looks like and what it doesn’t.
Fehlte mir eigentlich nur noch die Buch-Ausgabe von Hatje Cantz "Michaël Borremans - As sweet as it gets", aber die habe ich seit gestern. Ein großes tolles schweres Buch mit vielen Farbreproduktionen.
@rosieposieouvit The video came from a Belgian website (cobra.be) -- which is entirely in Dutch -- so I'm guessing they aren't too concerned about english-speaking art lovers. It's a shame, they have some other great videos there. I'm afraid the only way to get subtitles is if some good Dutch-speaking samaratin makes the subtitles for us using the original video file. I've been dying to know what's being said -- please pm me if you speak Dutch!
They could not have chosen a more ill fitting soundtrack. Tom Waits is fine and all, but his music is in such stark contrast to the type of work Borremans makes.
Have translated the video (made the subtitles), unfortunately, only the owner of the video (chromogenic) can post them. Have relayed the link to him. All going well he should post the new video WITH subtitles anytime soon.
To simply refer to his 'work' as a 'day job' is so ignorant of you! This man will go down in history as one of the major painters of the 20/21st century! And you say he has a 'day' job! And make fun! Perhaps he is where you would like to be!
possibly cause' my son , who's a footbal player he was complaining about the aggressive attitude of the felmish supporters......but it's just cliche! i know and i apologize for my comment
Gosh this is just brilliant. Art school teachers all telling me, Don't use photos. what a load of tosh!!

Painting isn't dead, but Duchamp is.

Que increible tipo, una gran persona. Me encanto conocer cómo es su vida.

Wow. Just... Wow.
Tom, What's the NL equivalent of wow , just wow though ?
What do you mean? The Dutch translation?
Tom Oude Vrielink
yes that's what i meant
Ik don't have an exact translation but what I meant to say is that I was really impressed with this documentary.
thankyou : ) inspiring xox
similar in a way to gotfried helnwien . interesting to watch this thank you
@MADUHEM Please help with the translation of the Neo Rauch documentary!! Please!!
They could not have chosen a more ill fitting soundtrack. Tom Waits is fine and all, but his music is in such stark contrast to the type of work Borremans makes.
hey! its my idea or the video has no audio
+ColorAzulClaro the audio might be blocked in your country because of music copyright
@junodoran There are subtitles, you need to click the "cc" button on the bottom right of the video ; )
Hello, There is a 43 minute long Neo Rauch documentary in German that I and others would love to have translated. Can anyone help? Please!!!
Have translated the video (made the subtitles), unfortunately, only the owner of the video (chromogenic) can post them. Have relayed the link to him. All going well he should post the new video WITH subtitles anytime soon.
Pity the English subtitles are in such a pale print.... making them almost illegible...
You can customize how the subtitles look. In the RUclips player click the Settings (cog wheel) > click Subtitles > click Options...
knap
what subtitles?
to find the subtitles click on the captions , its the little white box with 2 horizontal lines in it,between the clock and the settings icons
I don't see the English subtitles...strange.
+Lisa Davies click the CC (closed captioning) button right next to settings button. If you still don't see them after that then idk...
chromogenic thanks!
anyone know the music at 39 mins?
dEUS - Slow

Good painter, terrible singer! Stick to the day job mate!
