When Ebert starts his spiel against the film, I love Siskel's reaction - his "Oh No, Roger No, No!!" made it sound like something terrible was happening to Roger. x3

It's interesting to watch Gene Siskel's reaction. He went from good-natured amusement to polite disagreement to genuine stunned disbelief that Roger Ebert didn't like this movie and refused to even discuss it.
Brain Candy is one of the greatest dystopian dark comedies of all time (along with Brazil). This is one of the most epic arguments I've ever seen between Bert and Ernie. And Siskel was right this time.
Such a gem it's a weird first watch the way it was filmed and the music made me saying what the f is going on I was also high on weed the first time I saw it .. dont anymore but it's still a great comedy !! Ever seen corndog man? That's another dark comedy gem
They both had the occasional off review, and I think a lot of the time they probably exaggerated their displeasure to play off the other. In this one, I think Ebert is hamming it up just to make sparks. The main shtick of this show was the interplay between them, and it would be boring for them to agree too much. They were just as much a part of Hollywood as their subjects, an entertainment product after all.
+THECHI7LDUDE22 I think because they sometimes disagree is why it works so well having two reviewers who can debate it.. especially these two legends in particular :)
paulytamale - I agreed more with Ebert than Siskel most of the time. But yeah, some of his negatives made me scratch my head. This one, Die Hard and Full Metal Jacket come to mind.
Ha. I really miss these guys. They were both smart and made going to the movies fun. Movie going is a subjective experience and it's funny when they vehemently disagreed about the merits of a film. I have a good buddy who usually likes the same movies as me but we get like these two when we happen to disagree because we both think we have great taste. Lol
The Kids themselves aren't very big fans of the movie - they were fighting a lot during the writing and production - but I think that it's hilarious. I wish that they hadn't broken up around this time. They're the true heir apparents to Monty Python. The fans need another movie.

Despite all the hate it got from Eberts, I'm with Siskel, RIP bro, even though I'm biased to my favorite comedy troupe which taught how to be a comedian at a young age. If you understand all the social norms and political issues ushered out, you do have a gem here to make people laugh. A bit of education is required but if can get pass that then every "kid's" acting range, not even getting to shrewdly pulled stage sets and flawlessly crossdressing expertise applied, should come in one form or another for comical study as pave way as a foundation for comedians of the future. WKUK did this very well. It's just another page from out of Monty Python is what KITH is.
I love these two. May they rest in peace. Whether you agreed with them or not, you gotta love it when they disagreed with each other and spend the next 5 minutes just arguing.
They put too much toward the drag element. It's not really meant to be a joke; just the byproduct of the troupe playing these characters. Also, if you're looking to cite something funny, my go-to is 957's happiest memory: "So I hear dad's dead. Oh, hey, is that eggnog?"
I saw it in the theatres and am a huge Kids in the Hall fan....I liked it....but I can see why Roger didnt.....I saw Scott Thompson do stand up and he mentioned Roger Ebert's review....made fun of himself...glad to see it.... Cult Movie it is!

@Max William Lauf Yeah I love the whole introduction to that character too: he's upstairs in the master bedroom sneakily watching a video with scantily-clad fire-fighters, totally naked. His wife comes home and greets the kids who are watching TV downstairs on the couch: "Where's your father?" "He's upstairs jerking off to gay porn" "Ah.......again, huh."

+Fragenzeichenplatte I get it, it's purely a matter of opinion and preference. I liked it, he didn't. Nobody is right or wrong. My comment was not intended to be taken literally.
Brain Candy is another one to add to the long list of dumb films that were still somehow too intelligent for Roger Ebert to understand. It's a funny, well-made film, but obviously it's not fucking high-brow satire or anything. It's campy by design, that's the point, and yet somehow ol' Ebert still misses it entirely.
The neat thing about S&E was that they (as they once stated) never discuss the movie being reviewed until the show. So we get their unfiltered unmodified undiluted opinions.
This is one of the funniest movies of all time in my opinion. Way funnier than it had any business being. If you don't love Brain Candy, then you need to get on the drug!
"I'm gonna see this picture again, I'm gonna laugh just as hard." "Okay, maybe I will too." As much as I disagree with Ebert, that was one subtly sick burn he slipped in.
I've realized that Ebert needs to be force-fed emotions in his movies. He doesn't experience things like horror, humor, or sadness unless the characters are experiencing it on screen. It's perfectly expected that he wouldn't "get" this movie, as it mashes the absurd together with the mundane, to the point where moments of sanity are perceived as insane.
Rodgers written review is a lot calmer and explains why he didn't like it only kinda better, he basically says that he gets why a lot of the jokes were supposed to he funny, but none of them landed for him. he also thought it was trying hard to be cool in a cringe way
I thought Kids in the hall was the funniest show I have ever seen, and brain candy was the funniest movie ever. Maybe because these are my type of humor.
I have to unfortunately agree with Roger Ebert on this one: the movie was not funny. Don't get me wrong, I love The Kids in the Hall. I've watched all seasons twice, I watched their tour DVD from 2002 and even watched "Death Comes to Town" (bizarre, but enjoyable). I think they're absolutely fantastic in their humor but the movie was just dull. Extremely dull and not funny at all. All the jokes were boring, the whole story was just uninteresting and all the characters were bland and unlikeable. The only redeeming part of the movie was the cinematography.
But I can't blame Ebert, it's a cult film. It appeals to a very specific sense of humour. I'm actually surprised Siskel got the joke. Great movie, but I don't resent anybody for not.
The movie clips look godawful. It's sad to watch Gene's mind and motor skills clearly suffering from the cancer that was affecting his brain by this point. He makes some very odd beats during this debate and can't work up a very smart defense of the movie at all. Asking Ebert to watch it again? WTF was that?
jedijones Yeah, BC Ebert had such a solid explanation of why he didn't like it, right? He wouldn't even talk about it. You've only seen clips? Then you can't judge.
