I've long been somewhat suspicious of the Game Show "Wheel Of Fortune". I've seen so many contestants literally get to within one letter-ONE LETTER-of being able to solve a puzzle, and then "Blow it", by guessing the wrong letter, in order to complete the puzzle, and win that particular round. I've also seen, in the past, what looks like favoritism. Seems like that, more often than not, regular people are somehow passed over, so that somebody else that's "More beautiful & possibly really well off" gets to win. I'm wondering:Is the same kind of thing happening, that happened in this movie? I don't even watch "Wheel Of Fortune" anymore. I'm done with it!

Actually, the sponsors WERE touched. Before the scandal broke, sponsors had more say over a television show than the networks since they were the ones putting up the money. The fallout took a lot of power away from the sponsors and put it back in the networks hands, and gave us "standards and practices". My only complaint about Quiz Show is it never mentions the show that actually started the entire scandal, Dotto. But don't get me wrong, Quiz Show is still a fantastic movie.

While important to the public hearings in that it bolstered Stempel's claims, the 1958 Dotto incident, which happened nearly 2 years after Stempel took his fall on Twenty-One, would have added nothing but confusion to an otherwise tight, solid movie. Including every detail surrounding a story is not how screenplays work.

you know, i really don't care for Robert Redford.
as an actor, i just don't get his appeal. for whatever reason, my mind insists on rejecting him onscreen.
but in the early 1990s he directed two (2)! _really_ memorable movies for me: yes, _Quiz Show,_ but also _A River Runs Through It._
the scene where the (!spoilers! doomed) Brad Pitt character catches that big fish, both his brother and dad looking on in awe . . . i think you have to see the movie to understand what i'm talking about it. i'm sure it doesn't sound even a little bit interesting.

    • @SY-ok2dq

Redford was gorgeous in his youth, and he had this appeal that's hard to define. He made some great choices with the films he appeared in, and has some very fine performances to his credit.
But I always thought Redford looked a little self-conscious and maybe a little awkward onscreen. I got the feeling that he was a little uncomfortable with being onscreen and being this movie star. Maybe I'm wrong. But he transitioned to behind the camera very well, so maybe I'm right about that. Redford certainly seems to have a way with actors and knows how to bring out the best in actors (e.g. the cast of "Ordinary People" especially young Timothy Hutton who went on to win an Oscar for that role). I know a lot of actors-turned-directors are good at this, obviously as they know what it's like being an actor, but Redford also brings a lot of subtlety, sensitivity and depth to his films.

The real villain in all of this is the slug Dan Enright, the producer of the game show "21". He's the one who pressured the game show contestants into cheating, then actually Took the Prize Money Back that they won, pressuring them to sign a secret agreement to do that, forcing them to accept a pittance for selling their souls. When he was finally exposed (after threatening to ruin many lives to intimidate witnesses), he paid almost no penalty, laid low for a few years, and then was accepted back in Hollywood again, producing more game shows including The Joker's Wild. The contestants they pressured into cheating became pariahs, and the producers who committed fraud on a national scale paid no penalty at all, when they should have been fired, had their assets seized, and been banned from the industry (oh, and served serious jail time for extortion and blackmail).
But then, that's justice in America.....

I love the congressional hearing scene in which all of the congressmen just fall all over themselves to tell Van Doren that it is okay, we all make mistakes, etc. Then Rep. Steve Derounian (R-New York) basically cuts through all the chickens#@t by telling Van Doren that he can't understand how an adult of his intelligence has trouble simply telling the truth.

I couldn't help it, but during that entire movie, I was horribly distracted by Rob Morrow's terribly, overblown fake New England accent. I can't help but wonder -- did he have to lay that phony accent on so thick? I know his character was a Harvard grad, but sheesh, that was awful ...

Murph I love this movie, an underrated gem-and it’s on Netflix-but I agree, Rob Morrow’s New England accent irritated me, he was trying too hard, he shouldn’t have used it, better to use no accent than a lousy one (IMO), though his performance was good. As far as I know, Van Doren and Stemple are still around.

Quizz SHow a totally underrated movie. I had expected to find the title at least on the Oskar aspiration list but weard enough it fall in the Orcus of the trashed classics. Guess why, world wide thousands of quizz shows are filling the early evening programs if some " nitpicker movie " like this would become famous not only the TV program makers would loose money, the insurance companies backing the price money on every show also. So it is all because of the cash,, After all this scandal aobout the Professor with his renomée faking the answers had been an authentic major scandal in it´s days. True, but in those days, anti-Semitism was more common and he definitely looked Jewish. Remember Al's line to Charlie: "If you were a kid, would you want to be an annoying Jewish guy with a sidewall haircut?"
On the other hand, they went out of their way to make Stempel look bad. The haircut and the dead father-in-law's ill-fitting suit were Enright's idea.

Well they had a pattern of a Jewish guy, then a WASP who makes more money, then a Jewish guy again etc. It was just time for a WASP. But what really got me was that when they appeared at the hearing, Stempel the Jewish guy tells the truth and gets discredited and told he has psychiatric problems. Ralph Fiennes the WASP tells the truth and gets commended and an ovation.

It's strange. There was a period in the 1990s when non-Jews were playing Jewish characters in leading roles. Robert DeNiro in Casino. Warren Beatty in "Bugsy", along with Ben Kingsley - fricken' Gandhi - playing Meyer Lansky. They were the two most famous Jewish mobsters of all time. And of course Kingsley plays the most important Jewish character in "Schindler's List". I mean, what was up with that? Meanwhile, in Seinfeld, the Jewish actors (except for Jerry) were playing gentile characters. "Shiksa appeal" - Julia Louise DREYFUS? Which reminds me of Richard Dreyfuss playing the titular character in "Mr. Holland's Opus".
I mean, it doesn't matter. It shouldn't matter. Actors should get to play whatever roles they want. Hopefully Jewish actors weren't being denied Jewish character roles because of it. But I noticed this phenomenon back then and it seemed really strange. I can't attest to whether this is still a thing, because I don't care so much about movies anymore. Is it the movies, or is it me?

A bloated, sorta-interesting-for-about-fifteen-minutes movie about how ashamed we should be to live in a capitalistic society directed by multi-millionaire Robert Redford. And when of course no one wanted to see it - Redford shamed us all for not buying tickets to see something boring, pretentious, and what amounts to a lecture from a zillionaire about how ashamed the rest of us should be not to pay $15 a pop to see his movie about how awful capitalism is.

What does Redford having money have to do with anything? A person with money is not supposed to opine about a system like capitalism or any other when people exploit it for their own greed? Are we supposed to just be shown shinny happy stories about how well it works and not bring up when people abuse it? Your comment reads like what a dictatorship follower would preach! You are a bit confused dear stranger. This is a story. Based on real events. You don't have to feel ashamed. Nobody other than you can make you feel ashamed. Stories are for learning from them. Seeing different perspective. Thinking about other things other than your past concept of them. The good and the bad. If you want to live in an insular society where nobody can talk about the bad things in it, you are in the wrong country. People that love America are supposed to criticize the bad aspects of it to create change so it can be a better place, for all of us. Do you understand the concept of America? Guess you don't. And by the way, this was done in 1994. Tickets were not $15 then. They were barely $5. See how prices have tripled in just a generation. Have wages tripled? Nope. See another problem with capitalism?! Ahh, better shut up and keep in line. Right? Right.
