Thousands of hours of TV and Movies for me to stream on Hulu, Netflix, Disney Plus, Tubi, Amazon....and I’m watching At the Movies from 29 years ago. On a side note I love both Nothing but Trouble and Hudson Hawk.
I saw Don't Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead when I was around 10 or so, and actually enjoyed it. What they don't tell you here at all is that there is a huge component of the film, where Christina Applegate's character actually gets a job as a fashion designer and actually does a great job. It's a HUGE part of the film, and it works. The movie isn't about a dead babysitter, but a teen pretending to be an adult and doing a great job at it.
The scene Siskel showed gets paid off in the end when the brother cuts his hair and gets his shit together. Wonder if he even watched the whole thing. Also Sue Ellen doesn’t get the job as a “get rich quick scheme” like Ebert says; it’s so she and her siblings don’t starve to death. What a couple of hack frauds.
@@rafaelandrade7627 It's not about trusting my judgement but simply stating that it worked for me as it's target audience. As an adult, I might totally feel different, but I haven't seen it since then. Would actually be interesting to find out! I'll take another look and see if my 40 year old self sees it differently.
@@quentinkaasa47 It really hurt her movie career for years. And nobody saw "Anchorman" because of her. I liked her on MWC, but she really didn't have a good movie career (no starring roles of note).

I remember seeing Nothing But Trouble when I was a kid and I hated it then. And I mean, absolutely LOATHED it. To this day, I tell people to avoid it like the plague. And the worst part of it was all the high-profile names that were involved. I mean, you've got Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and John Candy, who were all at the height of their careers. And then, you've got Demi Moore, who maybe wasn't at her peak YET, but was CERTAINLY well on her way. And I just couldn't understand it. Even as a kid, I kept asking myself, who could have POSSIBLY convinced these people that THIS was a movie worth making?
I used to enjoy watching these guys, even back when they were only on PBS where there recommendations used to be either “yes” or “no” long before the thumps up/down thing.
Fun. One of the few S&E episodes I never saw. And never saw or even heard of Shout, heard about Return to Blue Lagoon but had no idea how bad it was. If S&E think it makes the original look not so bad, it must have been horrendous. These guys were so great individually and a national treasure together. Just the fact that their reviews of horrendously bad movies could be so much more entertaining than the movies themselves speaks volumes. Yes, it is easier to criticize than create, but it is far from easy to criticize as creatively as Siskel and Ebert did.
Nothing but trouble is some of the worst crap I’ve seen. Too sad that great actors like demi Moore and John candy tainted their good names by being in this movie
Thanks for posting these great shows. S and E were such intelligent and knowlegeable guys. Sill love seeing them review the movies even though the movie itself is long gone.
1991 was an awkward period in many respects - movies, music, clothes, fashion. Very much stuck between two eras. Early 80s were awesome, late 90s too, but the early 90s kinda sucked.
I just feel so bad for Phoebe Cates that she was in that movie. She deserved so much better. I can't believe she couldn't get better parts than she did after Gremlins. Who the hell was her agent?
I love how every year some huge loud 'action/scifi/adventure' bloated with expectations of 'box office gold' bombs and theres hangover moans ofthey won't make anymore.
The worse disagreement between them: Silence of the Lambs. One of my favourite review of 1991 because they both made good points and yet came to opposite conclusions.... Ebert was the winner in the end.
except that it was shit and it featured a plot of that guy from a few shows on fox and had a song from a tv show that got cancelled as he tries to woo heather graham. oh, and gwyneth paltrow is in that awful film.
Hudson Hawk is unimaginably bad, but I think it should get a few points for being so weird. I’d rather see a shocking fiasco than a mediocrity. Also: Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is not that bad-c’mon.
That's what I like about Hudson Hawk, it has enough things in it worth seeing that it rises above being mediocre, even though it has some serious lows. There are people who love Nothing But Trouble and I thought that movie was just horrible, but I can imagine someone appreciating it for similar reasons.
Not a great year for film in general. (Or for anything else.) The highlights of my 1991 were finally graduating from the hellish Alabama public school system and the fact that I could buy "Tales from the Crypt" reprints at any bookstore.
Funny as a kid I never understood how these two had a whole show about being movie critic and never watched it. I am older and watching this completely enthralled lol
My parents rented "Drop Dead Fred" thinking it was a kids movie when I about about 8. I had nightmares about it for weeks. Every time I think of that movie, I still feel extremely uncomfortable. Ugh.
They are harsh on some of the movies I grew up on . Don't tell Mom the babysitters dead . And drop dead Fred . I'm a 80s baby . And maybe you can enjoy and appreciate these movies better as a kid than an adult ?

It's interesting how perceptions can change. I remember when people dumped on Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and used it as a punchline, but now you rarely hear about it. I guess it's a combination of much worse movies coming out and the movie coming to be regarded as something of a cult classic. People used to rag on it and now they just say, "Oh, yeah, that was a thing," or, "You know, I never did think it was such a bad movie."

Rest in peace, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert.
I used to watch this when I was like 4 years old and only had 5 channels on my TV in my bedroom.
If either of these greats were alive today I wonder what they would have said about ADC in A Star Is Born...
That intro is so cute.
Wish they were around to tear apart The Last Jedi
I don't think that would have turned out the way you think it would have.
Well Andrew Dice Clay proved himself to be a good actor with Blue Jasmine, which neither of these critics lived to see.
Nothing but Trouble? That movie was classic. Hudson Hawk too!

That movie was crazy. My son was 8 years old then and we watched it a bunch of times and laughed our heads off.
I like Hudson Hawk
You're in the minority - even the writer and Richard E Grant admit it's a terrible film.
You're probably the only one. This still has not become a cult classic nor is Nothing But Trouble a midnight cult film like RHPS.

Mike and Jay are looking old.
no "cool as ice"? was it because it was so bad that it wasn't worth mentioning?
S & E was always on during that Saturday early afternoon watch in the background while napping on and off lazy kinda day.
Greatly miss Siskel & Ebert! Thanks for posting!!
Nothing But Trouble, Highlander 2, Drop Dead Fred, and Hudson Hawk all came out in 1991? Something must have been in the water in Hollywood that year.
I would hate to be a film critic and sit thru some of the terrible movies they have had to 😂😂😂😂
Hand down Nothing But Trouble. No only the worst of 1991, but the worst movie ever.
movies known today as Netflix movies.
lol I loved Drop Dead Fred as a kid
HIGHLANDER II: THE CRAPPENING

No, Ebert nailed it. The movie is a fantasy for little girls and he compared the whole job aspect to Working Girl.

10:17. This did nothing to kill the career of Christina Applegate. She has done quite well despite it.
