Later in 1994 (maybe '95) Roger wrote an article explaining what happened with that Jack Lemmon story on the air. I can't find it on his website anymore, but the story goes like this: prior to the taping, Letterman's colleagues had prep phone calls with Gene and Roger individually. They told each guy "We want you to tell the Lemmon story. Don't let your partner interfere!" When the show was over, Gene was furious with Roger for going over the top and nearly ruining the segment he thought they both knew was supposed to be his. But they talked it over and realized Letterman's people had fooled them both, and set them up for an inadvertent bit of comedy.
They were really like an old married couple at this point. RIP to both
Omg thanks for adding that. I thought it was just awkward.
@@vincentvangogodancer Just warn you Flaccidus Minimus is a liar with no respect for anyone. He takes movies out of context and disrespects 80s fans just to make himself look better.
Was that Buddy Hacket story really true?? Lol
@@patrickshields5251Waah! Cry some more!
This is great thank you
I love Roger's story at 8:50... but now I want to know which film it is, so I can find out how that scene is relevant to the plot
“The Castle and the Rose”
@@MrGonzoDT so why did she do it w the 🐕 ....no wiki synopsis to read the movies that unknown lol
@@MrGonzoDT The Castle of the Rose (1969)
Funny how each appearance they alternate who sits next to Dave.
Siskel & Ebert must have been two of the best guests ever on that show. and that's saying something. they're terrific.
Yeah for movie critics they're actually more entertaining and funny in interviews than a lot other celebrities who paid to entertain 😅
”Must have been"? That's a consecutive run of three of Gene's 22 ”helping adverbs"!
RIP Siskel and Ebert - always entertaining and thoughtful
Boy, they were such children! They fought about EVERYTHING, not just movies! Their chemistry will never be matched or surpassed!
I love watching them roast each other. They were both quick witted.
Like brothers who fight constantly
Ebert def has the little brother vibe in every interview
@@seanodeli7031Even though Ebert was four years older.
One of the best comedy trios I’ve ever seen. I just watched 46 minutes of just their 1994 appearances and I absolutely loved it.
The thumbs down had to have been out of tribute to these guys.
S&E was my first thought, RUclips copied the thumbs symbols from them.
For those wondering about Ebert's story, the movie he's referring to is called The Castle of the Rose (1969). The only way to see it is at the Korean Film Archive in Seoul.
And torrenting!
Thank you! I spent a few minutes searching, failed, then found your comment. It piqued my curiosity.
Thanks! Will check out on my next trip!
…did the dog happen or did Roger make it up?
That snowball fight at the end was just wonderful in every way!
I always like how he calls them "America's sweethearts" or "America's favorite couple." I was such a fan of them beginning in 1989, when I was 13. I would get Ebert's books for my birthdays and/or Xmas, and of course I watched them on TV. I think it was their Nov 1994 Letterman interview, where I was watching it in the college dorm, and a bunch of girls came in and wondered why Siskel and Ebert were always together- "Do they live together?"
It would be cool if they lived together and slept in bunk beds.
@@langdonalger9219 this sounds like an amazing Saturday morning cartoon!
I love how Dave stirs the pot with these guys. At the right moment, he'll intentionally say something to cause disarray and says "oh boy, here we go!" when they start going at each other. He plays them like a toy- it's great. This was the best late night show.
"In Hollywood Oscar is king."
Siskel & Ebert were such an amazing pair of entertainers. Dave had such a great rapport with them and bet he looked forward to seeing them every time.
One of my favorite upload series of yours, thanks also for Chris Eliot and Charles Grodin! Cheers
I love Grodin, I'll have to look that up.
Midnight Run is one of my absolute favorite movies.
Have a good day.
Dave had a pretty damn good arm at the end with those snowballs. Caught a few nicely too.
I heard the story about the fake note on the airplane before in the Roger Ebert documentary that came out a few years back but was happy to hear it again, too funny.
Imagine you’re on an airplane and in the row in front of you Siskel and Ebert are arguing about a card game and throwing food around
A whole movie could have made from that!
@8:24 “He just can’t tell a joke.”
“He’s laughing!”
“I’ve seen him laugh more.”
Ebert & Oprah dated one time.
He had to reminded her, while on her talk show. Ha!
God I miss them so much.
I miss this type of late night these days everything is so political it's like there's no place to breathe anymore
I agree with you totally!
“We’re getting on really well now!”
Proceed to fight and squabble for three minutes straight.
thanks for posting this and making my day with gene's edgy robbie benson story.
I miss the old days...
Who's the young guy & girl on the stair at 20 minutes in?
This is Letterman at his best. In the funeral home was brilliant.
Nice follow-thru Don,you really knocked these out:)
In the first segment the are some close- up shots you don’t normally see on Letterman. I wonder who was directing.
Robbie Benson was great in The Chosen, which was a unique and very good movie.
Letterman, Siskel and Ebert are three of my favorite dudes
Hell yeah
What great guests
45:52 Roger loses his balance and makes Gene go down with him 😂
29:36..." Can we go with ya? "
So good.
That snowball fight at the end. Just perfect!
Fun fact: Letterman auditioned for the lead in Airplane!
Funner fact: I uploaded the audition seven years ago.
25:43 😂
Ebert was about 52 and Siskel was 48 here. Notice how today 52 year old men don't look 52?
Be sure to watch all the way to the end of this video.
Awesome.....better times....
Mustache shaving was funny.
Boy I miss those two guys.
Siskel can throw! Ebert wasn't bad. (Snowball gag)
Siskelstone and Ebertrock. I remember when that happened. Finally found it on RUclips.
If late night TV was even a quarter this funny I’d still be watching it. I almost forgot how funny Dave Letterman was. Dave never lectured you on your politics, or your health he simply made you laugh.
Blame the networks. Haven't watched TV in years. It's unplugged under the bed. Garbage.
most of the time they get played in by the band - the interlude of "Just the Two of Us" by Grover Washington and Bill Withers. Sometimes the band throws in other cool stuff like "What's the Frequency Kenneth" by REM at 37:10
Oh those catty boys
Old american television is really great, I say that as a spanish who was born in the middle of 90s.
Watching Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert mocking themselves once is not enough... as listening that the legend of Cop and a Half continues.....
Much better times in the media.
31:09 - Now that's what I call journalistic integrity!
funny how they mocked his basketball skills in another video yet here dave was catching every snowball they threw at him...wow i'm
impressed.
26:35 the song the band is playing could be "All She Wants To Do is Dance" , "Let's Go" by Wang Chung, or something else.
It’s the former, Don Henley.
I have the band’s playlist up to July 2002. “All I Want to Do Is Dance” is on it. “Let’s Go” isn’t.
I love the airplane story 22:00.
Buddy Hackett? "Ya wanna a peets o' poy? It's good poy. Sure ya don wanna peets?"
The two people who were born on the same days that Gene and Siskel died are now 23 and 8.
Ironically, that ham actually looks rather medium sized.
Classic. Modern comedy is no where even close to these guys.
I love The Boys
That’s your choice, and I support you.
Just a kid trying to have fun.
Anyone know the song at 14:19?
The guy making the fat jokes sometimes doesn’t get the last laugh.
…did you just mock his brain cancer? that’s *way* worse than fat jokes, not even close
Bruno Kirby is Cop on the Edge
Young Clamenza
i love big ass ham too
Glad I missed 1994 😅
TomRiddleMeThisSpock Why? It was a great year.
@@langdonalger9219 that was just a little roast joke ;)
At the same time, this is the only thing I've seen of these two and from this their style isn't for me. What I wrote was 100% roast lol
94 ruled, you missed out.
They're talking about Philadelphia, Age of Innocence, Remains of the Day --- where are the great films like these being made today? Just action crap over and over.
Philadelphia 2 : Tokyo Drift
There are plenty of great movies coming out my guy, you just have to keep your eyes and ears open for them. IMO The Power of the Dog, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Titane, Minari, Flee, Soul, Parasite, The Lighthouse, First Cow and many more are all worthy additions to the cinematic cannon.
Oh, thanks for spoiling Star Trek Generations guys.
Thank the writers for that dud.
Dang, Sorry for your loss.
3:54 love this imitation. We all know people like this (if we're not that person ourselves)
What is the Korean film with the poodle sex scene?!?!
hahahaha, just because i'm nervous and i wish this was over...
Shout out to the guy at 45:00 who threw a snowball back at Siskel and ebert
