- The humble fish and chips. It’s still not entirely clear how or even when this quaint but filling little meal became the official dish of the people of the British Isles but what is known is that during the first half of the 20th century it had become as quintessentially British as cricket and the Royal family. One of the most common types of fish to be included in the meal was cod from the North Sea and British fishing trawlers scoured the region between Scotland and Iceland in pursuit of this seemingly unlimited resource of the sea. However, by the middle of the 20th century it would be the pursuit of this innocuous fish that would lead to a series of diplomatic crises and at times confrontations on the stormy, strategically important northern waters that if weren’t managed properly, threatened to escalate out of control and possibly even drag in the superpowers.
It is a David and Goliath story where a small fleet of Icelandic Coast Guard patrol boats squared up to the mighty Royal Navy who found their hands tied by regulations and changing attitudes and laws that proved that sometimes the pen really is mightier than the sword. It was a series of phoney wars where pride, principle, the rule of law and yes fish resulted in piracy, deliberate ramming of ships and even the firing of guns at one another. And all this was taking place in a strategically vital part of the world caught up in the nuclear brinksmanship of the Cold War. Today, we are going to examine the Cod Wars between Iceland and the United Kingdom and examine how they impacted the nations involved and beyond. Welcome to Wars of the World.

History Should Never Be Forgotten...
I was a serving Royal Marine in 1976-I was in the wheelhouse when we collided with the gunboat Baldur….we limped back to Plymouth with a gapping hole in the port side.
wow. It's good you didnt have to go to war.
It's the GIUK, gap Greenland Iceland United Kingdom gap. I carried out many passive towed array patrols there in the 80s tracking Soviet subs on ASW frigates.
I also did fishery protection duties whilst in the Royal Navy. I was serving aboard HMS Dumbarton Castle when we visited Reykjavik around 1983. We were the first Navy ship alongside there since the cod war.
I believe I speak for ALL cod when I say this was a very engaging documentary. Thank You!
Cod bless you .
South Africa is a tragedy in this respect, with crews unqualified to man its naval vessels- in the last 30 years E Asian trawlers have fished in SA waters and devastated our fishing stocks. Fish is now an expensive luxury.
Don't you have a navy to protect your waters?
So now you know how the Icelanders felt about the British fishing fleet.
The trawlers from England over-fished and drstroyed the cod stocks in Scottish waters then moved on to attempt the same in Icelandic waters. Fortunately Iceland was an independent nation and able to resist the depredations of the English trawlers.
It’s 2024 and fish stocks still haven’t recovered.
Oh yes they have. Are you a fisherman are you out there on the ocean day after day and been doing so for alot of years? If not
zip it
@@jase4270 They always have someone to blame: Foreign fishing boats.
I was working in the weapons shop, Portsmouth Dockyard, when a Mediterranean type 4.5 came in off one of the frigates.
Good job the gun wasn’t fired as the recoil mechanism was totally seized.
This was one cod-damn interesting video…
Edward Heath, Harold Wilson, Anthony Crossland and John Prescott utterly betrayed both the distant near water fisherman of the UK. Nothing has been done by any UK government to compensate the UK fishing communities devastated by the loss of distant water and home fishing grounds. The biggest irony is that Crossland and Prescott represented the constituencies in Grimsby and Hull and worst of all Prescott was a seaman. Low grade all of them.
"by any UK government to compensate the UK fishing communities" you mean other taxpayers or do you expect the Icelanders to pony-up? It's not for lack of sympathy that I have to say that government intervention inevitably makes the sum of things worse, and just the expectation of government intervention is harmful in itself - it reduces the individual and sucks the vitality out of society.
@@nemo6686 I think he means that we don't expect handouts from the taxpayer - we expect our governments to protect our means of earning our own living.
@@wolfysmith4752 Yet only compensation was mentioned; "protect our means" in this case implies acceptance of escalation to armed conflict - is that reasonable?
Instead, Britain applied the same protective measures to home waters, but joined the CFP then most British fisherman sold out, either to other EU fishers or to the UK government, who crushed the boats to make sure they couldn't be used again, even as house boats.
(This after boats had been bought-out but reappeared later fishing off Eire - better in the government bureaucrat's mind to destroy ALL that value of labour and material than risk a leakage in their great policy.)
@@nemo6686 If Iceland sends it's 'navy' to threaten British fishing vessels, then I'd expect the RN to be sent to.protect them - that's what it's for.
The CFP was one of the most egregious stitch-ups the EEC inflicted upon the UK, with Heath-Nonce fully aware of what was being done, but not caring In the slightest. I come from the fishing community of Lowestoft - people have long memories - and it's no surprise ex-fishing communities voted 70/30 for Brexit across the board.
@@nemo6686 The fishermen did sell out they were sold out by the politicians. Britain could not apply the same protective measures to its home waters as it ha already sold out to the EEC over the hastily cobbled together Common Fisheries Policy as the realised with the application of UK, Norway and Ireland brought with them a huge economic asset in their long coast lines and territorial waters and Brussels wanted to get their sticky fingers on it. Norway wisely pulled out and it is notable that Iceland keeps the EU at arms length. The fishing industry represented less than 1% of GDP and with a un-unionised casual labour that caused no industrial trouble which was utterly betrayed by Heath and his Labour cohorts. These were the people that propped failing industries such as steel making, car manufacturing, agriculture etc. and of course Roll Royce. Government after government, both left and right wing have schmoozed around and with cash incentives to bring foreign investment into other beleaguered areas such as South Wales, the North-east, the Midlands to build car factories, train manufacturing etc. None of that came in the direction of those communities that suffered as a result of Heath and the Labour cronies, who betrayed the trust of the constituencies they represented.
Of course it was no problem for Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling to find £4bn to compensate UK investors in Iceland banks when they went bust, or for the Bank of England to provided a £100 million secured loan to Landsbanki to help maximise the returns to UK creditors.
It was Iceland that turned the Cod War effectively into a hot war firing on unarmed vessels and attempting ram other ships, knowing that they had the trump card of the NATO base.
Another fascinating video many thanks indeed always so interesting and educational
While they were going to war the genocide on the cod almost wiped them out forever
Well done Iceland for standing your ground
I love my Iceland we dont give in
I'm British, and I love Iceland too.
History has proved that you were right too.
Great video, but when did the Fire Nation attack?
I can never get use to herring...too fishy a smell.
Give me a fresh fish anytime!
Could you make a video on the US-Iraq war or the Yugoslav wars?
No fish in Iraq ... or Yugoslavia.
I am British through and through 10/10 to the Icelanders trying to save their fish stocks. The greedyness of the trawler owners is dispicable still happens in newlyn here in the uk the big owners still ignore the fact that the stocks of all fish need a break......There is evidance that the Basques in northern spain who were great fishermen not only crossed biskay but fished of the grand banks and probebly set foot in caneda. They braught the catch back salted and dried it and it was used as currency/barter throughout bronze age Europe.
Everyone under 30 thought this was a call of duty video. 🤣
people under 3-0 are not very bright.

Not close to A.I. which always mis-pronounced words.
It was all political that Iceland used to their advantage, America and nato needed Iceland as a base to stop Russian dominance in the North Atlantic

Too dumb to understand if they kept fishing like that there would be nothing to fight about...
Haha Britain
So, the CCP adopted their historical claim of the South China Sea to the British against Iceland. Such a hippocrates.
So as usual it’s the British being aggressive and habitually overstepping the line again and again.
of course its always bash the brit time if you cant find a coherent argument
@@davedixon2068 I haven’t cared about your opinion since 1776.
But not very aggressive in stopping illegal migrants, in fact now living gratis in hotels. The Brits are quite the contrary, totally spineless.
