BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

Hi Bjoern,
Thanks for your email. The conundrum answer will always be different to the word you see on the screen. Contestants know they must rearrange the 9 letters in front of them to create a brand new word, and if the conundrum does happen to spell out a correct word already, the answer will always be different to this. As we are in our series finals, the conundrums increase in difficulty through the semi finals, quarter finals and the grand final.
I hope that clears up any confusion and you continue to enjoy the show.
Thanks,
The Countdown Team

289:
100x2=200,
200+75=275,
50/25=2,
2x7=14,
275+14=289.
My brain obviously isn't working this morning. For the first one, out of time, I came up with
25*7=175
6+3=9
9x9=81
175+81=256
256+6=262.
Then they did their solutions and I feel like a fool.
Why couldn't the answer to the conundrum be "Continual"? It's a legal word. Just because it happens to be the order the letters are in already doesn't disqualify it.
I thought the same when I was watching it yesterday. Colin even said to Marcus Brigstocke, “Marcus, you’re staring at me; either confused or you have it” and received an “I’m confused” as a reply. Anyway, I've sent an email to countdown@channel4.com to check if there is some weird rule or if it was an oversight.
So, actually... that is exactly what disqualified "continual" as the answer, because you always have to rearrange the letters. See my pinned comment at the top, which is the email I received from Channel 4 when I asked them about it.
They’ve set conundrums like this before. There are some which wouldn’t be suitable, e.g. COMPLIANT and COMPLAINT, and CARDPHONE and PHONECARD, but if they’re challenging enough then they’ll be used.

@@mclarenguy22 Emulating, had to look up the others
Fro the 2nd round I had:
100+7=107
107*2=214
214+75=289
For the last round:
100*2=200
200-1=199
199*2=398
398+75=473
And managed both teasers (usually just the first one fos some reason)
funnily enough I did those 2 rounds the exact same way.
Oh I didn't need to make 262 more difficult than they made it look it seems, but for 262 I had 7-3=4+25=29x9=261, then 6/6=1 to add
In the first numbers round, I saw the contestants' solution and also had these ones:
25 - 3 = 22
6 + 6 = 12
22 x 12 = 264
9 - 7 = 2
264 - 2 = 262
7 - 3 = 4
25 + 4 = 29
29 x 9 = 261
6 / 6 = 1
261 + 1 = 262
In the second numbers round, I saw Cillian's solution and also had this equivalent one:
100 + 7 = 107
107 x 2 = 214
214 + 75 = 289
But I also had these two more "showboating" solutions:
75 x 50 x 2 = 7500
7500 - 100 = 7400
7400 / 25 = 296
296 - 7 = 289
100 x 2 = 200
200 - 7 = 193
193 x 75 = 14475
14475 - 25 = 14450
14450 / 50 = 289
In the third numbers round, I saw both contestants' solution, but also had these:
8 x 7 x 5 = 280
280 + 50 + 8 = 338
50 - 8 = 42
42 x 8 = 336
7 - 5 = 2
336 + 2 = 338
In the final numbers round, I saw both contestants' solutions and also had these:
100 x 2 = 200
200 - 1 = 199
199 x 2 = 398
398 + 75 = 473
6 - 1 = 5
75 x 5 = 375
375 + 100 = 475
475 - 2 = 473
6 + 1 = 7
75 x 7 = 525
100 / 2 = 50
525 - 50 - 2 = 473
For 289:
75 x 100 = 7500
7500 - 50 = 7450
7450 / 25 = 298
298 - 2 - 7 = 289
These number rounds were so easy. Ridiculous to have numbers that only require a second's thought to solve.
In a quarterfinal, I mean...
Round 1
(7 + 3) x 25 + 6 + 6
Round 2
(100 + 50 - 7) x 2 + (75 / 25)
Round 3
7 x 50 - 8 - 4
Round 4
(6 - 1) x 75 + 100 - 2
1. (25-6/6)x9-7+4=262 or 25x(3+7)+6+6=262
2. (100+50-7)x2+75/25=289 or (2+25)x7+100=289
3. 7x50-4-8=338 or (50-8)x8+7-5=338
4. (6-2)x100+75-2=473 or (75+2+2)x6-1=473
1.
(25 - 6/6) x 9 - 7 + 4
May need editing
My solutions:
25x(7+3)+6+6 = 262
100x(50/25)+75+(7x2) = 289
8x7x5+50+8 = 338
(6-2)x100+75-2 = 473
For the 338 numbers round I got
7*50=350 then
5*4=20 take this away to get 330 then add the 8.
1. 7+3=10*25=250+6+6=262
2. 100+7=107*2=214+75=289
3. 50*7=350-8-4=338
4. 6-2=4*100=400+75-2=473
Cillian is gonna win the final, isn’t he?
Probably not, Ronan is pretty unbelievable. It'll be one of those but my money is on Ronan.
He seems to have sorted out his numbers game which were quite poor during the heats so the final should be a cracker.
289:
100 + 7 = 107
107 * 2 = 214
214 + 75 = 289
100 * 2 = 200
50 / 25 = 2
7 * 2 = 14
200 + 75 + 14 = 289
25 + 2 = 27
27 * 7 = 189
189 + 100 = 289
262:
7 + 3 = 10
25 * 10 = 250
250 + 6 + 6 = 262
7 + 6 + 3 = 16
25 - 9 = 16
16 * 16 = 256
256 + 6 = 262
25 + 6 + 6 = 37
37 * 7 = 259
259 + 3 = 262
6 / 3 = 2
9 + 2 = 11
25 * 11 = 275
275 - 7 - 6 = 262
