Walnut blasting is done in majority of direct injection vehicle's turbo application and can be done in vehicle's that run full e85 ethanol.

Direct injection engines such pull engine oil though intake mainifold into valve cylenders. Speaking specifically of BMW N54 engines , they get a lot of oil on the vavles which over time becomes hard and valves dont close as much causing a loss in power. N55 engines fair better compared to n54 for the oil and crust build up.
Walnut blast is the process of using crushed walnut shells (almost sand size) using a compressor to blast away the dirt out. N54 should get cleaned every 30k miles or so. N55 not as frequeently.
My F30 N55 has 135k miles will get a walnut blast soon. Diy cost is 4 hours and $150 in tools. A shop should charge you from $400 to as high as 1200.

Do you tape off the crankcase vent port visible on the right side of each intake runner during the blasting?
