Every week I look forward to Morrissey Friday! I’m dreading the day when you’ve covered it all and there’s nothing left-maybe ‘Morrissey Live Friday’s’.
A song about football hooligans which manages to neither totally condemn nor celebrate football hooligans or hooliganism. He makes it abundantly clear throughout that these are not people to idolise, however nor are they cartoon-like villains. Perhaps the most illustrative of this are in the last couple of lines: "We are the last truly British people you will ever know, you'll ever, NEVER, want to know". There is real empathy at the heart of this song, and nuance too; two things that make Morrissey such an extraordinary songwriter. This is probably my favourite song on this album along with I Know it's Gonna Happen. I also LOVE that bassline from Gary Day.
We got 3 main sports in England football mainly working class Cricket mix of working class and middle to upper class, rugby union middle class upper class I would say football hooliganism started in the late 60s but got very violent in the 1980s, a game between Luton Town v Millwall in 1985 was broadcast live to the nation which ended in A full-scale riot
For me personally.. Morrisseys take on how the Middle Class, 'the over paid Sports pundits' react and responded to the actual true Fans during Sporting events, basically with their natural horrid Class devide.. and a Thousand things besides. As in .. never underestimate the continuous Class system within Britain. As unfortunately its with us for decades to come.
In terms of slightly more niche morrissey songs you mite not have looked at try I like you, ganglord, lucky lisp, will never marry, angel angel down we go together and don't make fun of daddy's voice. Really good and often overlooked, which i guess is how u could describe morrissey generally.
Football or ‘Soccer’ is the biggest sport in the world by some margin, second biggest is cricket. In case you are unaware, Canada is hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosting with the US and Mexico. Possibly the biggest sporting event in the world.
Great reaction as always. I actually think you still have track 5, ‘Certain people I know’ still to listen to from this album. Also you mentioned on a previous video that you had already reacted to ‘National front disco’ but I can’t seem to find it on your channel. Was it blocked maybe?
One of the small handful of songs which derailed Morrissey's career. Steven can't have not known he was flirting with controversy with those songs, yet went into a tizzy when it was received as exactly that. Personally, I think he has a complicated homoerotic relationship with skinheads and hooligans, as he does with criminals in general. As far as I can tell, even the other band members didn't know why he kept going back there.
@@1011moz Perhaps, but it derailed his image. He wasn't always for everyone but without this self-sabotage he might have otherwise been appreciated as Bowie or Dylan have - because he has been that good - rather than being someone it's somewhat embarrassing to admit to liking. The irony is that he's probably not racist, but on the topic continually fails to put what he's saying across, or gets seduced by the idea of being controversial.
This album was quite early on in his solo career. He's recorded so much more since and still tours today. I don't believe his career was "derailed" in 1992. Morrissey has always had a bit of an obsession with the darker sides of life. Violence of one kind or another crops up frequently. Some of his best songs hAve a bit of darkness about them. I think Moz has always been the same. He doesn't feel the need to explain himself and while he knows he's not popular with everyone he doesn't really care.

At the first listen i thought this was about his reflection on inner perception of art and and the meaningless life
I prefer the live version on the live album Beethoven Was Deaf.
It’s a lot better live so is Jack the Ripper

DRESDEN DOLLS should be moving up the Nick list pretty soon. "Girl Anachronism " and "Backstabber " are a must. Lyrics are a plus. ENJOY!
