Oh my god! You're building a Destroyer!
I worked in a fabrication shop for over 35 years and have made, built, designed, and repair lots of metal. When you weld on sheet metal you have to weld a 4 to 6 inch pass and let it cool down. The only way I can see to weld the bottom and frames is to only tack the bottom then put the frames in and start welding in strips to keep what we called PULLING. On the boom make sure you grand your stop and start welds. It is the only way to keep a Mig Weld from leaking. I love your boat and can't wait to see it done.

As mentioned below you need to buy that beautiful young lady her own welding helmet. Progress is looking good. That you are making mistakes isn't a problem, it just happens. But you are learning from them and that's the most important thing to take away from the process.

Built a Roberts 36 out of steel. Took 5 years and in those days kits were not available. Set up a plywood measuring jig to make the frames and everything worked well. It doesn't take long to figure out how to manage weld distortions. Sold it a few years ago and the new owner wasn't that knowledgeable about steel and not very handy. As a result it is now scrap. Steel boats need constant attention, more so then any other type of boat. Keep up the good work.

Great job your doing. When your partner is pushing down on the leaver tell her not to have her fingers under the bar as if a tack breaks on your bridging angle the bar will crush her fingers. I have subscribed and look forward to watching all your future videos. Keep up the good work. Chris
Currently building a piece of equipment for my employer. A few weeks ago, I showed up with a big Hi-Lift jack, and got a bunch of odd looks and questions about what it was for. "This is my welding distortion removal device." It doesn't matter how precisely the parts were cut or fit to begin with, once you make that first weld it's a different ball game.
On butt joints you can try to control the warpage to some extent by peening the weld. This is hitting it with a hammer on the weld itself but you also will need to brace the other side with something to act as an anvil. The peening will expand the metal in The joint and help to control the shrinkage to an extent thereby controlling the warpage to a degree. I have used this technique to control warpage on meat smokers I have built in the past. It’s simple and it takes time it can slow you down a good bit but the end result is worth the effort in my honest opinion. Hope this helps.
Just binge watched all the episodes and you are doing a cracking job on the filming, editing and explanations, am looking forwards to what’s to come. I am not a welder nor do I know anything about building in steel so this maybe a stupid comment so forgive me if it is ... can you use an air compressor too put cold air on the metal around the welds too cool them down to help with the distortion? Can’t wait for the next one and although I know the longer episodes take a lot more work it is definitely worth it . Xx
Hi Gilly T, thanks for watching so far, and for the kind comment. It is possible to cool the welds down, but using compressed air while welding might blow the shielding gasses away and cause the weld puddle to get porosity. It's more normal to cool the other side of the metal with a large lump of aluminium or copper which conducts the heat away. Because of the amount of welding we have to do I think it would probably be impractical.
Just come across that channel and have subscribed. You might feel you are novices but I think you are doing great work. I find it fascinating to watch someone doing something way beyond my capabilities. Have now watched from episode 1 and look forward to watching many more as you move forward.

The good thing about making a mistakes is that you will always remember them, and that's when you really learning! Thanks for sharing the mistakes for sure it will help lots of people!!
Make sure you always weld on both sides of the stringers and beams.
The water mast have no access to the weld. I have seen boats that only where welded on one side everywhere and so the boat was shorter lived. Also think about condensation / water that must rundown to the lowest bilge point.
If you let it reside on edges like metal strips and stringers you may create additional problems on the long term.
one of the first things I was taught when I started my apprenticeship was to NEVER put a tack where you can't get a grinder
and it has proven useful but so has the die grinder.

Nice with slightly longer episodes. Looking forward to the one covering the problems with the wrongly cut plates. Still can't fathom that the supplier hasn't sorted this out for you by now.

hello looks like your doing great work!!!! i am a welder in canada, and am currently pricing out different projects ( all bruce roberts designs ) before settling on the one that suits me,,,,, was wondering if you could give a brake down of your cost projections? ie structural cost, rigging and mast cost, engine cost, interior outfitting cost, hardware software cost (gauges ect) it would be great help to see if im on trac or way out to lunch. thank you and best wishes
Hi Greg, as I was told when we started planning the boat, you are probably best off getting costs from someone who has finished at least one complete build. We will do a video breaking down costs at sensible stages in the build once we have finished a particular part. (for example how much the hull build cost etc.) Sorry for the slow reply, and hope planning is going well for your project.

Question for you guys, when the boats completed, are you going to sandblast or are you cleaning and priming as you go. Having said that, if you are priming, will you sandblast at all? Very interested to find out if the primer steel saves you the sandblasting step....
Hi Tim, we had been touching up the primer as we went, and had hoped to just sand blast some areas where needed. Since the delays we've had this last year we'll probable end up having to sandblast the whole thing. I think in the right conditions the pre-prepared steel could save having to sandblast the whole hull, but weld seams would still have to be blasted.

Which program you use for planning to be boat?
What type of planning are you wanting to know about? We didn't design the hull, but I believe Rhino CAD is what they use to design it. Most of our planning has been on Microsoft Excel and on paper.

Hi Mark, we've been on the same snag for a year, with the manufacturer not providing replacement radius plates for the ones they did wrong the first time round. We've just heard some news that will hopefully mean we'll get back to it soon. It has been very frustrating being forced to wait. Will be back to posting videos once we're back at building.

Still getting screwed by the kit dealer or is the issue resolved?
We have heard from them a week and a half ago, that they should get our parts to us by Monday next week. However we've head that before a number of times and aren't sure we believe it. It's been over a year since we found the problem... Will post updates when there's anything solid to say.
