Its a typical renault from that era. It runs, stops, steers and all the rest is broken or not working corectly. But it keeps on running and the rest is easy to fix. The electrical and ict components of Modern Renaults are a disaster. This car will outlive a Renault build today !

Or come to the Netherlands, as we never had much of a domestic car industry we didn't/don't have a biased car culture, which is true for most european countries now.. but it has always been that way here, so you'll also find a wide range of classic car culture.

My mom drove one of these in yellow. I was too young to remember it at the time but a big guy tried to steal it while my mom was in a 7/11 buying cigarettes. When she came out, she fought with him while some people stood around and watched before he hit her in the head and drove off. This guy immediately totaled it by driving into a nearby telephone pole.

I've driven three French cars - a Peugeot 206, Citroen ZX, and a Citroen Berlingo, all over 10 years old, and all of them had knocking sounds coming from the rear.
all small Peugeot and Citroen until the late 00's used the same rear axle which had passive steering but with time it gets worn also, french cars have soft bushings which are confy but get worn fast
I had an Renault Encore as my first car. I can’t remember the year. Maybe 86-87? It was cute. Had a little sun roof and everything. Black paint with a gold pin stripe… It was also a hatchback. I never had any problems with it. My Dad was a mechanic and kept it tuned up and did the oil changes on it. He built speaker boxes for me too. It was a great first car! I learned how to drive a manual in this car at 15 years old. (Back in 1990 in Louisiana we could have a drivers license at 15 and I did.) I really enjoyed this video. Pretty cool to see one still on the road. Even if it’s in pretty rough shape! 😆😆
I had an Alliance! Nice car aside from the reputation for early trouble. Mine was OK but I only kept it to 65,000 miles. These were known for having a very soft ride while also having decent handling (They stick to corners pretty well despite the lean). With the narrow tires & front drive, they were outstanding in the snow.
I had an Encore with automatic as a rental in the mid '80s in Colorado. The seats were quite comfortable but going uphill to Winter Park was nothing short of comical. I believe they were badged with a sticker that read "Renault, the one to watch"; we decided it should really say "Renault, the one to watch out for!"

Its, a monocoque frame everthing is bolted to the monocoque. So worn out or age deteriation rubber bushings. Bad shock absorbers, old bad grease in the semi independent rear torsion bar suspension, worn out friction cups mc pherson independent front suspension.
0:14 and of course, being american, it beeps with that traditional American beep. Renault 11 (that's its name back here in europe) would only have these beeps as extras. And it wouldn't be that, it would be a buzzer and some crap 1980's Satisfaction-esque french synth voice. Again, as extras. Nearly nobody had that. But hey, it has the engine from the 21, i grew up with that sound and it's making me nostalgic. Even though the 21 was faster, more confortable and bigger (you yanks know it as an Eagle Medallion). And you finally had the experience of driving an OLD french car. And know why you don't see these anymore on the roads. It's interesting. You see 4's, 5's, 19's, some 21's and even the 25, but never the 9 and 11. Last time i saw a 9 it was in 2004 in elementary. A brazilian friend's mom had one.
The cool thing about these old Renaults are their really aggressive Stock Cams on the older Engines. They have really restrictive Heads, Intake and Exhausts, all of which can be modified by any Semi Competent Tuner and it's relatively simple to get Power Increases of 50% and more just by removing Restrictions and Polishing Runners.

By basically replacing all the Externals with Parts from old Japanese Bikes, mostly Injection and Exhaust and Polishing the Intakes, as well as an Ignition Remap, stiffer Valve Springs, and adding one Tooth of Advance on the Cam , will get around 135hp at 7500, and absolute Torque Flatline. You basically run into Piston Speed Issues at that Point. But most Renault Engines tend to be tunable like that.

Only indicates level the first seconds of starting the engine and then goes away or ACC position.
RegularCars which engine does it have 1.4 liter chain push rod or 1.7 over head cam with timing belt? The 1.7 is good engine more power but you have to change timing belt and pulleys every fifty thounsand miles if you don't and belt breaks it well bend the valves engine is a interference engine.

Starters sometimes go bad in those Renault's very common struts tend go bad in them. There not that bad of a car if you keep up on maintence there fairly reliable.
This is a renamed, 'Americanized' Renault 11. I cannot understand how many people criticise these cars when lots of people in France and Spain used them daily for several years.
In '83 I bought a Ford Escort and a friend bought a Renault Alliance. on his engine was a tiny hose from the thermostat that pointed up, made a sharp u-turn and went into the head. this hose rubbed the hood and would wear thru about once a month. the dealer was unable to correct it, so I was stuck constantly fixing it. he sold it in only 4 years and only got $400 for it. at about this same time, I managed to wreck my Escort. since my Escort I have never, and will never buy another new Ford!
I've once sold an otherwise perfect little car because it had a goddamn creak like that. Yes I did try working on its suspension and checking bushings, spent quite a bit of money on that but no one could find the stupid creak. It wasn't a panel, nothing was loose, and it's enough to drive you insane. I now drive a Peugeot 206. Nothing creaks and aside from the idiotic electronic gas pedal (it's like nothing... nothing... nothing... nothing... FULL THROTTLE -- you can't feather it at all, and it's disastrous for your clutch), it's awesome.
Also it's not OBD2. I don't live in the US and that is not mandatory here. Folks, thank your legislators. My year model is post-2000 and it has a port that LOOKS like OBD2 but the pin layout is some retarded proprietary Peugeot BS that only responds to proprietary $3000+ Peugeot equipment.

PS: I love RCR, but everytime you guys do Renault kinda don't like it... Since are cars you don't know much about or really don't understand what are they and who drive them. Point in case, your review on the Clio 172 ( called by many on of the best driving hot hatches of all times) VS the Peugeot 206 (style over substance).

great cars, my 1987 r11 has 400 000km on the clock and it's had absolutely horrible life, but still runs perfect. Also completely rust free. I haven't seen other rust free 80's cars in many many years here.

The gauge in question was not oil pressure before the engine start but OIL LEVEL in the crankcase,actually quite handy.

You could easily epoxy cement that shift knob on. The rear suspension part might be a little harder. (Unless it's the exhaust pipe banging).

There were a few left in regular usage in Colombia a couple of years ago. They were a top 10 seller though.

All old Renaults are known for having extremely soft and floaty suspensions. But somehow, they still know how to make a sporty version.

Truth be told I kind of miss Peugeot. Back in the day Sweden and France produced cars the were off the beaten path. Modern cars are amazing but a bit generic.
It´s sad that we probably won´t see anything as reliable and easy to work on as the 240/740/940 series in the future.
AKA the Renault 11 in Europe. Terrible cars, just... terrible.

great cars, my 1987 r11 has 400 000km on the clock and it's had absolutely horrible life, but still runs perfect. Also completely rust free. I haven't seen other rust free 80's cars in many many years here.
@@jarnoob My uncle had 2 Mk.I Espace, 1 sleeper swapped with a CNG Converted V6, and a 2.0. The V6 blew up an ran him into a Ditch, but the other one is still running and driving.
