MK 2 on Genesis was the first home version i played back in 1993. SNES is the one i played at home the most. I didn't own a Genesis of my own much later. I got back into retro in 2009 and haven't stopped since. It's so hard to overlook all the missing sound content in this. I was raised with the superior SNES version so I was spoiled. Once I got to play the 32X version, it added so much sound content & graphic quality that I finally had a good rival to the SNES version. It's better in some aspects & worse in a couple others so it's fun to go between them. Will probably never play the Genesis version again

Im like this with Streets of Rage 2 realizing it's VASTLY superior to Final Fight in my old age. I think 90s kids were too obsessed with graphics and sound, and how special the arcade was. Now that we have arcade perfect ports, we can give it an honest look.

    • @iwanttocomplain
      @iwanttocomplain Месяц назад

Final Fight is so early, but look at how big the sprites are compared to Double Dragon. FF is weird because you have to queue up attacks in advance to get the speed you need. SoR is way more responsive. I found Sor3 gives you so many moves, it's could be almost too easy. But in the US version, the difficulty is so brutal, you will be lucky to get halfway through. But if you can level up your guy, the level of intensity of the gameplay of Sor3 is the greatest. Rolling up and down, queuing up a ranging double kick, instinctively as you plough through baddies. Instant reaction to your guy from the control. The mechanic of a free special every 10 seconds is weird to get used to, but it's like a bomb in a shooting game. You need to keep using it to stay on top of things. SoR3 is the most advanced game in terms of mechanics. But the gay guy fight is stupid, with weird music and a short awkward fight, why is it even in the Japanese version...? Music has some real stinkers in sor3. Someone needs to go in and put some bangers in their place, especially the disco. Pixel art is a bit crappy in sor3. But they expanded the mechanics of that game each time.

@Neotank22000 it very easily could have been arcade perfect minus some sprite sizes. The one thing that I notice in comparing SNES fighting games to Genesis, is that the Genesis is pretty much always more responsive and 'punchy.' So even if the SNES had more colors or different-sounding music, voices, etc. the Genesis tended to have better gameplay. And of course, the 6-button controller was the best fighting game controller at the time. Superior D-pad and best button configuration.

IMO as a SEGA fan and our beloved 6-Button controller rivaled the SNES version despite the better graphics and sound, that controller was great for all fighting games. I'm 43 now owned my Genesis in 1992, back then graphics was a major selling point, 2024 not so much anymore. I love the pixel art and sprites the Sega Genesis produces especially when upscaled properly using something like a retro-tink, those graphics really pop out on a modern display. SEGA games were always more exciting for me. Also because of the SEGA Genesis limited color palette, I feel it has a nice 16-bit retro look, lots of nostalgic feelings.

Well the blast processing feature did actually exist, and it was a special data bus to the palette memory that bypasses and overrides all other traffic, only used in h-black interval periods. Making the palette memory extremely fast. At just 128B (compared to the snes 512B), it's the most expensive memory type used in the system as much as 10x the cost and speed of vram for instance.
It's worth noting, however, that the snes palette addresses number 16 in total, which in all but two modes, use only half the available memory space. Making the snes palette availability precisely double that of the Mega Drive.

The missing sounds and animation frames all could have been included on the Genesis version, but it all comes down to the price of manufacturing game cartridges back then. The larger the size of the game rom, the more it cost to manufacture. Sacrifices were made to keep profits up and manufacturing costs down. Thats my when MK III came out on the Genesis more was included. Midway spent extra to use lager capacity game cartridges so not nearly as much content would have to be cut.

It's also worth mentioning as far as audio that Sega for weird with their variants of Sega Genesis models. The Best sound comes from the original Genesis with the headphone jack. The model 2 is always said to have worse sound, but that's not entirely true. With the model 2 if you flip over and look in the bottom vent, if the vent is mostly silver colored you have a better version of the model 2 but need a stereo cable. Audio still as good as the model 1 but it's better than the variant of the model 2 where you see a little to about half of the silver metal plate going across those vents and the Genesis model 3 have worse audio quality so, you kinda gotta know your Sega hardware, weird but I guess that's how they cut the cost to make it more affordable.

I don't know if you've ever gotten the suggestion... but have you ever played the TVGAMES PLUG & PLAY version of MORTAL KOMBAT 1? Very interesting port to say the least if you wanna try it and split hairs in comparison. It's better than SNES and SEGA versions. If you think the SEGA version has an appeal now, try it out. It's enhanced for sure. Not like the Rom Hack of SEGA MK1 "Arcade edition "but pretty darn upgraded.

Nice. I'm still think the snes version is more enjoyable (because of content and being less insane difficult), but I like the sega genesis version for the same reason as you, for it's unique music and feeling. About content, sure the Sega Gen has less colors, but the lack of speach and the shadows are not exactly a question of hardware limitations, but more a cartridge storage limitation. MKII for Sega Gen is 2 Mb in size, and Snes version is 3mb. Back them all the third party developers had to ask for Sega or Nintendo about the cart size, and them the owners of the system give the developper authorization for 1, 2, 3, 4 Mega Bytes or whatever. On Mk3 both systems have 4Mb cartridges, so they share almost the same content (some diferences because of restrictions of colors and resolutions on each system). In Sega Gen MkII the developers made the obvious choice: short storage you first cut voices and sound effects, them cut some graphics (the ending scenes), all to keep most of the backgorunds and characters. If the storage was even shorter them they could cut characters. Sega and Nintendo produced the cartridges, and they had to manage theyr stock and disponibility for each project. An example of this is the European version of Fatal Fury Special on SNES. The jap and USA version had a 4 Mb cartrige, and the EU version is only 3Mb, so they cut some characters and stages to make the game fit. Probally Nintendo was shorted of 4Mb carts so they allowed just 3M for the European version.

As you're already aware, this is the version I had at home, and it was all because i didn't have an extra $10 to buy the SNES Version. I've no regrets. As you mentioned, it has its own appeal. Graphically, musically, and the sound effects. MK2 on the Genesis is Nostalgic pleasure.

Nostalgia: 'a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past.'
A sentiment, which is specific to yourself, based on romanticised (inaccurate) memories of the past and given an (inaccurate) favourable opinion/review, based on personal bias.
I play and rate games based on my current re-assessment of their qualities. Even if I played it when I was younger.

You were saying that the hardware for the Genesis was inferior because it came out 2 years before. I actually disagree with you totally here. I find that the genesis hardware is far more advance than the Snes hardware. The fact that you can attach a Sega CD, 32 X & the Sega Base Converter to it already makes it better.
I would sat about 90% of the multi plats are better on the Genesis then they are on the Snes. On the Snes you just have graphics & sound. However the gameplay is terrible along with the controls. Genesis handles the gameplay a lot better. The Genesis won't slow down at all if there are like 6-8 people on the screen at the same time. Some games Genesis has more levels. Also the Snes in beat em ups will limit the number of characters on the screen because it can't handle it. Sport games are far better on the Genesis as well.

    I adore the SNES version.
It has a visual charm that is undeniable.
However, the Sega Genesis version truly pushes it's hardware to the limit, making the gamer a better reflex-fighter than the SNES version ever did.
MK 2 is nostalgic gaming bliss...

"Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis is the best game ever."
Some games on certain consoles just seems like that pair of pants that fits just right and others don't seem to fit as well and this is one of those. The Sega Genesis was a console that was purposefully marketed to the older crowd. Tom Kalinski once said: "Let's leave Mario and Nintendo for the kids and let's go after the teen and college age gamers." Nintendo realized, then, they were losing their edge to Sega and their pride couldn't allow them to be outdone. These were several ruthless American businessmen that thought they'd owned the market. They were known for and described as "using fear tactics" to keep devs and publishing companies in check because they knew they owned the market the share, but they were losing that. Peter Main was something like seriously offended over this and Howard Lincoln thought he was doing the community a favor by "sanitizing" Mortal Kombat. It was a move to win over gamer moms. Lincoln didn't even want Mortal Kombat on the Nintendo period but knew it was such a big game he had to do something. But Peter Main knew what was at stake and with Mortal Kombat II, they knew the time had come to make a major decision in a shifting market and whether Nintendo would remain relative or not. So, they began allowing it but really tried to downplay it by using the other shiny object to keep their reputation.
So, that's kind of how it was. What kind of gamer were you? Did you want a tyrant and back a tyrant or did you back someone that gave you options and freedom as a gamer to act your age? It just seemed to fit better and was more natural on Sega. Sega was the edgy console. The rebel. Even looking at the Genesis cartridge vs the Super Nintendo cartridge conveys "I'm for the rebels, to go against the grain, to be a colonial and give the tyrant King the middle finger." Earthworm Jim 2 others will say is better on Super Nintendo, maybe, but there a lot of gamers that pass up the Super Nintendo version and go for the Sega Genesis version, again, because it is just a game that has that edgy rebellious feeling. Almost like you had to hide the Genesis from your parents and play it at night and then you'd play the Super Nintendo during the day just to throw your parents off. Actually, for the longest time, when I was a kid, Mortal Kombat was the only game forbidden in our house so I had to smuggle it in the house like an inmate smuggling drugs into a prison hoping my schoolbag wouldn't get searched. Once Columbine High School happened, that ruined my gaming life because I couldn't play much of anything after that. Resident Evil was gone. I lost so many copies of that game my dad caught me playing and made me throw away and one day he heard a gun shot playing Syphon Filter at my grandma's, a Teen rated game, and made us shut that off too. It was horrible. My dad didn't want games influencing us to become like that and him have to be the parent to explain and be that parent so, it sucked. I knew I wasn't that kind of kid, but Howard Lincoln had the government telling parents Nintendo was doing it right and that games like that didn't belong in our society and my dad took the bait so, I had to go to my friend's house that had those kinds of games and experience them there. So, yeah, there ya have it. It may not be the better version of the game but, it's a technological feat actually. Look how close games were to the Super Nintendo when the Super Nintendo was new enough to have a chance to blow the Genesis out of the water but the Genesis kept up, Sega found ways to market the games to compete with a console that was almost speced better and Sega kept socking them right in the nose, against all odds, Sega challenged Nintendo that was seen as couldn't be beaten and showed the world there were options and a bigger world. And in many instances, the game still ran better on the Genesis than it's Super Nintendo counterpart. Street Fighter II is a perfect example as the faster CPU of the Genesis ran smoother than the Super Nintendos chuggy version, it was watching David challenge Goliath and be winning for a long time. I think ultimately in the end the Super Nintendo still came back and outsold the Genesis by a few units but even the packaging and the hardware vs the SNES version, the look of that alone just says "I'm the game your parents warned you about and the good guys tried to throw me away, but here I am, I preserved and made it! PLAY ME!" I don't care if the Super version is said to look better, it's not by much and I personally still think the Genesis version sounds better. There are some games that you say Nintendo sounds better. If it has an orchestral kind of score? Yup, Super Nintendo, no argument and I'll bow to Nintendo every time, but it's still synthesized sound, it's not the kind of quality you'd hear on a CD or cassette tape but it was as close as you can get. It doesn't really sound like everyone says it does, but it's as close as you'd get at that time. But then, there's that punchy thumpy power bass and techno bass drum and gritty sound of that Yamaha chip the Genesis that got you jacked up like injecting shark adrenaline or something that got you ready to whoop somebody's butt that sounded so cool the SNES chip, that would later challenge Nintendo in their own console and Nintendo had to find someone else to design their sound chips. And guess who they went to? It didn't even have a sound chip, the CPU did the work juggling the rest of the tasks so, yeah. Some games just belong.
For Xbox gamers, you could tell them all day long the version they were playing was inferior to the PlayStation counterpart, but it goes in one ear and out the other because to them, they remember LAN parties with Halo, that's all they know and remember and their parents electric bill through the roof housing those things and then trying to get the smell of teenage swass and Doritos feet out of their house after have ten to twelve kids in their house all night long, that's what they remember. You could show them the anti-aliasing inferiority or the screen tearing defects or the chuggy framerate that runs buttery smooth on the PlayStation, and they don't care. To this VERY DAY Microsoft abuses their consumer fanbase with lies and deceit, picking their pocket every chance they get, when the rest of the consumer world is telling them they're a whipped Labrador, and like that Labrador, Xbox gamers have that same loyalty. They don't see and realize that's how they're being treated, because they don't want to come to that realization, it's like being told you've been raised an Evangelical your whole life and you're told that they misinterpreted the Bible and that they identified there were some things wrong with Catholicism that don't belong and never did, but that you still allowed yourself to be deceived by a guy whose ultimate goal was to make money to live fancier than his congregation and lets his congregation suffer while he's a Billy Graham that has a couple of houses, sports cars, and a private jet.... Xbots can't let themselves come to grips with the fact their choice of publisher has been exposed as a fraud, because they can't let go of those LAN party nights with Halo.
That's my point. The Super Nintendo version maybe is superior, in some areas that's subjective to personal taste but, Mortal Kombat is one of those franchises that just belongs best or fits best on the edgy Sega Genesis. It's the console that stood for you against the corporate giant that oppressed the rest of the community and seemed to have the right too considering they took an industry that had previously failed and was nothing and revived it and turned it into something and I think for gamers that really know, no matter what their preference of console is today, there's still that respect or that you have to acknowledge that we wouldn't be where we are today without Nintendo. However, we wouldn't have Xbox or we wouldn't have PlayStation or maybe even Valve and Epic Games type platforms without Sega being the anti-establishment who knows what we'd have today had Sega not come along, and more specifically Tom Kalinski, to take the industry and shake things up and try something out there, which remember when Sega came to Tom, he was making Barbie Dolls and He-Man action figures, you would have expected that same thing as he would've been kid friendly because that was his background, but the thing with Tom was he had a BIG ear. He was known for collecting data and surveying people to see what they really wanted and encouraged his staff to do the same and they learned on their mall tours what teenagers were like, what they wanted and Tom knew how to take those results and build a business model around it and then trust that developers and game designers knew what they were doing. You dont have to be smart to run a business or be a corporate powerhouse, you just have to surround yourself with smart people and trust in their knowledge and experience and while Tom was smart, he still surrounded himself with really smart people.
This is probably going to be way over the character limit and thus tell me my argument is invalid, RUclipss polite way of saying the comment was too long so, we'll see.......
I'd add as well, the extra chips on the SNES version also made them more expensive than their Genesis counterparts

I admit I still don't like the music in the Genesis versions of Mortal Kombat, sounds too tinny/weak drum beats to me. Some games got amazing music out of the Genesis (Target Earth comes to mind) but MK was not one of them (IMO). That said though it's still a fun game and works well.
