Music is much more than just learning chords and riffs, it is a journey and it is your story, Mine started 1970 and at 66 years old it isn't quite over yet, it's been quite a ride.
You are a musician, a story teller and part of teaching music is telling the story, Don't ever stop telling the story.

I also grew up around music. My Dad drove the bus, for ZZ Hill. When I was a kid I remember Bobby Bland coming to our house. I also got to spend a whole day with Albert King and only my dad, my younger brother and the bus mechanic was there.

This video is a humble look at the real Guthrie, and how you got where you are not just the fast playing guitar player that never seams to hit a wrong note. I have been trying to play guitar for the better part of my life and never seam to get where I want to be but, I still strive for get there someday...
One question I have is, how did you deal with the starting out jamming with people? The thought is always there that I'm not a good enough plyer to sit in.

    Thank you, Guthrie 🙏🏻
I learned to sing and love music because my mom would put on records and sing along with Linda Ronstadt, Hoyt Axton, Pete Seeger, Woody and Arlo Guthrie, The Eagles, Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel, and so many others ... it was in my teens that I picked up a guitar, after playing keys and violin and singing in the school choir.
Quite the journey, and your story is inspiring. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻🤍

Hi Guthrie and greetings from Sweden. Thank you for sharing your experiences, knowledge, and life stories.
Some time ago, there was a poll on a Swedish guitar page on Facebook about who one's favorite guitarist was. I answered SRV and someone else, and added you as a "bubblare" (rising star).
The person who posted the poll contacted me and was so happy that I mentioned you. He had been in Nashville for a while and seemed to have met you. He praised you highly, saying what a down-to-earth and nice person you are.
I think that really shines through in your videos.

Thank you so mutch Guthrie for sharing, and bless your family for beeing so supportiv about your talent and support it. Thank Mr and Ms. Trapp for loving the child so mutch and be sure all will come out great, just in support the path of the Child with its natural talent. Scoolsystem is not for everyone, and believing in the children also against the pressure of scool is hard i know it. But also good from the teachers, that send you out class and jam guitar outside the School, in a way they saw what your jurney will be, and what could be better in effect for a real teacher than seeing e child/teenager that follows purly his heart, dream and passion! Thank you so mutch Guthrie for sharing. For me aside that you are a brilliant Guitarplayer and teacher, you are also a really gifted storyteller. As i wrote i love this content, as i do it with uncle larry. I can immagine how you chatted driving down to atlanta. Have a really nice week! Sorry my english

Man, I resonate with much of your musical journey. My dad was a jazz drummer so music was a huge part of our household. Saturday morning our house was filled with the greats blasting through the house; Coltrane, Miles, Stan Kenton and of course Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. I had an Uncle who lived in Pensacola and sang Southern Gospel and was a great picker himself. Sunday mornings in our house was full on Southern Gospel blaring through the house. The Florida Boys, Happy Goodman Family and my Uncles group the Dixie Echos. That really was embedded in my ear and my soul and is the foundation for my playing nearly six decades later. Keep sharing stories it’s as much a part of us as the playing!

Part of me felt sorry for the guitarist(s) in whatever '80s Band Of The Moment was the musical guest on the show that week, because G.E. usually had better tone and licks to my ears, LOL.

Thanks for sharing the story of your musical journey! I really related to the part about your guitar playing buddy, I had one in middle school. We were taking Guitar as a class, which was school supplied gut-string guitars, teaching us folk strumming patterns. Me and my buddy would go off on our own during practice time and play AC/DC riffs on these folk guitars, and the teacher would confiscate our picks, and back then losing a pick was a big deal, haha. So we started bringing the plastic bread tie things off a loaf of bread, because we didn’t care when he took those 😂 Loved hearing your story, man.

I love the story of your teachers telling you and your friend to go out into the hallway, so that they can teach the other kids!.I had a disruptive student who played drums. I told him " Bring a drum or two in, we will play" First day we walks in with a snare and hi hat.... Next day i see him walking down the street with a bass drum. Over a two week period , he brought his entire kit in and took over my classroom. We set it up in the corner. After that, i made a deal with him, if he behaved and did his work, we would jam on Fridays after school. I'd bring in my guitar or bass, and jam we did. I had a ball with that kid! Most weeks he behaved, some not. Later on, we got a kid on bass , another kid on guitar, a few that wanted to sing, and we put a few songs together. One of the most fulfilling semesters i ever had. The power and beauty of music!

Hey GT .. your stories and early inspirations are fascinating. I was enthralled at a very early age by my uncles 40's ES-300 (which I now have and cherish) but I wanted to be a drummer early on and that was my focus through early teens. Guitar was 2nd love up to that and it wasn't until I was in the Navy that I met some really good Bluegrass pickers which helped me immensely. Four years I toted around my trusty old D-18, including shipboard, all over the world. The case top had a big stencil of the Zig-Zag paper guy that was like secret code to other hippie sailors like me.

**Guthrie!!* I too, walked out of the 10th grade and never returned. I'll one-up you on being disruptive . . . me and a friend of mine literally got so disruptive in a Sunday School class that the teacher finally said, "I've had it!" and he walked out and never returned. I'm not super proud of that, but I'm just saying that I can relate to the walking out of school and being disruptive. I moved away from home when I was 17 years old. That was a mistake, because if I would have stayed at home a few more years I could have grown in the guitar world. So unfortunately, I didn't start really start playing guitar until I was almost 21 years old.
I keyed in on something you said about having natural talent vs being influenced by your surroundings. If I would have been surrounded by family playing music, and therefore maybe had more opportunity to play guitar at an early age, I believe it would have made a HEAVY impact on my life long ability.
Love your videos. This one is rich as it gets! Thanks for all you do!
