Great video Harrison. Hope DJI updates their lidar sensor for better quality and makes it for SLAM method, as they have Ronin handheld stabilizer in their product line. It would be nice to see a lidar in a small scale that could be attached to the body of the Mavic 3 in the future. I like to dream.
Yeah, amazing how far technology improves in a year, huh? I guess precision is the deciding factor, and how many shots needed to define linear and horizontal features features...
Bought the R2A a few weeks ago, works great, but had I know the R360 was coming I would definitely have gotten that one instead :( Though watching this comparison with the L1, I'm glad that we went with the R2A and not L1. This was a very interesting
I noticed that the number of acres being covered was 41 for the L1 and 34 acres for the 360 and R2A. Won't that affect the overall accuracy average, or is there an error with the L1 there too?
Wow.... what a video!! This really does show the difference in performance of each Lidar scanner as well as versatility. Great Job and thanks for sharing!!
Love the review Harrison. Your enthusiasm is infectious and hilarious. Slightly gutted I bought a Rock R2A when it was USD30k (and not USD19K) but hey it still works very accurately compared to the newer kit ... thanks goodness 😀. Well done on the products, so glad you guys came into the market!
Once again another great well presented video. Would love to see a comparison between terrestrial lidar scanners vs mobile/drone scanners in a similar manner to this video.
Harrison, another great video, very informative! I'm wondering what kind of results you'd get if you adjusted the R360 flight plan to compensate for the 360° FOV, fly slower or multiple passes for example? If the R2A is shooting 240,000 pts/s over a 70.4° FOV, and the R360 is shooting 640,000 pts/s over a 360°, at the same flight speed the R360 is only getting 125,155 pts/s per 70.4° FOV, correct? I'm interested in getting setup and trained to start doing aerial archeology, surveying/mapping, and SAR with multiple sensor types, so looking forward to actually talking with you soon!
Thank you for the positive feedback! The recommended height for the R360 is 60m and going as low and slow as you can is ALWAYS a great option if you need it! The R2A gives slightly more points but overall you get plenty of points with either system and the R360 produces less "fuzz" so you get a cleaner point cloud.
Wow this is great! I was looking at the L1 at first but this comparison really has me reconsidering. Do you know how well LiDAR, in general, does at picking up fences (barbed wire fences on t posts) under tree cover and in dense under brush? Can you distinguish between brush and fences or is it all mush? I’m excited to watch the rest of your content as I research which setup to convince my bosses to buy!

Very good video 👍 Why are there so much less points for the 360 in the vegetation penetration study? I haven't checked the specs, but is it a matter that the 360 only captures points that have a high number of return than in comparison to the other lidars? Also, while I'm on the topic of number of return. For all the studies, do all datasets in every study include all points with all variations of numbers of return (1,2,3,...)? Thanks for the info. Greetings from Croatia ⛱️
Would crosshatching the flightpaths on the first test flight (Electric Power Station) increase the amount of returns from the lidar unit to be able to depict whether it is 1 wire or 2? Overall, great informative video!
I like the video and comparison, but honestly, with your big "rock" jug standing as a sponsor all the lenght of video, it's just hard for me to believe that you are being 100% objective about the L1... I might be wrong, but it is my impression. No jug, and I would buy a rock scan tomorrow 😉

Nice. 1cm res is certainly good but I take it that's maybe 1 standard deviation? if 95% of the points had to fit in I'm guessing the spreads are much worse. With 1cm res you wouldn't see any fuss on the stairs. do the Rocks have RTK GPS?
It's a bit of a case of "you get what you pay for" I guess ;) The R2A and L1 both use a Livox Avia IIRC, so it's not surprising that they look similar. Then the L1 loses on a combination of software issues and being a gimballed system (so the IMU is more likely to drift). The cases 4 and 5 show advantages of the ROCK systems, it would have been cool to also have a test of non-nadir flight with the L1 ;)
Thanks for the comparison, I’ve been waiting awhile for a more comprehensive overview of your systems and the L1. Do you have any accuracy tests for the SLAM system over a long range? Also, over such a range could you use control points to correct the data? Thanks again, very nice!
Hello, can you explain more in detail how lidar returns works? I don’t understand how the lidar identify returns of the same laser pulse. I understand that the laser pulse is sent and then the lidar receive the returns from the trees, ground etc. But how the lidar recognize which return belongs to which pulse when is sent matrix of laser pulses?
This is all attributed to spectral reflectance signatures of different objects surveyed. I understand Lidar technology deals exclusively with the Electromagnetic spectrum which is both visible and invisible depending on the wave length. Now spectral reflectance signatures are all about how the object absorbs various wavelength bands within the electromagnetic spectrum and these signatures are different for different objects. I mean different objects reflect different wavelengths bands. So the onboard Lidar sensor decodes pulses according to the wavelengths reflectance of the object. That's how it is able to identify a leaf, soil, hard surface and many others. I hope it throws some light.
I would love to see DJI do the same comparisons considering you are apart of Rock from what I have read. I mean you clearly lay out your case here, however its going to be skewed when you're wearing rock gear and rocking Rock everything. Good video, but want to hear from DJI too
Hm, I don't think you're going to get that video anytime soon! But, I appreciate the feedback. We have a new LiDAR unit now... the R3 Pro. Check out my channel for more info.

Can you please explain to us how to use yusense ms600 multisepctra gimble to dji matrice 300 rtk throw dji pilot 2 application because when i check the type of camera inside the application I don't see this type of gimble
We use the MicroDrones mdLiDAR1000HR and the results we receive are realy good. I think it performs better than ROCK R2A but I'm not sure if it's better than ROCK R360.
How does r360 capture Color from all directions? One must keep pointing all around? Or can combine with 360 spherical images from known positions (common to scanner and camera) ?

Thank you for your feedback! You can improve the quality of L1 scans using the Strip Alignment tool in the ROCK Cloud software. Check out this article here explaining how to do so... www.rockrobotic.com/post/strip-alignment-accuracy-dji-l1-lidar-processing-software
Was the survey with L1 done with the recommended parameters for this scenario? For example in Abandoned Airstrip: DUAL ECHO, REPETITIVE and height between 50 and 100 meters? Very important is the IMU calibration every 100 seconds of flight. Thank you for your reply and congratulations for your excellent video!
It was. The DJI pilot app 2 automatically does the 100 s calibration and it was in the correct mode and the AGL was 50 meters. I was also in the latest version of DJI Terra desktop software. The L1 was purchased new just for this video as well
I would use the ROCK Cloud to process L1 data as there are tools to improve the data's quality. www.rockrobotic.com/post/strip-alignment-accuracy-dji-l1-lidar-processing-software

@IndianaDrones I have been watching very closely. I have been working with Aerial LiDAR for nearly 3 decades. I will drop you guys a line soon for a serious discussion.
Can you ban the robot on your channels he scammed me for 170 making it seem like u were doing a mavic 3 giveaway. I really don’t want this to happen to anyone else
I’m new to your channel so my questions may have been answered somewhere maybe you can direct me to it: Why LiDAR? What can be done with this data? How do you sell the data? Who wants to buy it? I’ve heard I can make $40,000 selling LiDAR data for a 1 mile stretch of roadway, which really peaks my interest. Currently I’m making $100 a pop taking pictures of stuff, doing Pix4d ortho mapping which isn’t Jack diddly. I got on your rock 360 website trying to learn and somehow signed up for a 14 day trial for something then got booted off the website I don’t know what the h happened. When you said you dropped $14K on the crappiest camera in this comparison just to have a new one to test, I almost crapped myself. To think you can drop that kinda money like it’s no big deal is mind boggling to me. So yeah, I want to learn how to do LiDAR because that kind of cash security sounds fabulous to me. How do i start? Where do I go to learn? Is there a course I need to take at a college? How to you figure out how much to charge your clients? How how how…..???? You sold me on your 360 camera is the best and I’ll buy it, if you teach me how to get into this business.
We would love to help you out! I think it would be best to reach out to one of ROCK's LiDAR Experts to discuss this in a more private setting. Write to sales@rockrobotic.com and we can get you taken care of. There's onboarding, training, support, and a lot of other things to discuss. Look forward to hearing from yah.

Stop shouting
STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO!
What are your thoughts on the ROCK R360 vs the new LiAir X3? Which would you choose and why?
ROCK R360! Better support and processing software (ROCK Cloud)!
