Such a hard question. I love how the Turtles, like Batman can be written in a serious or more goofy tone and they all work. It did blow my mind in the early 90's when I discovered the original comics and how crazy different it was from the cartoon.
I've always been partial to the original Mirage Turtles from the first 10 issues of the original comic series. I also really like the post apocalyptic future Turtles in the 3 episodes of season 5 of the 2012 show (Wasteland Warrior, Impossible Desert, Carmageddon) that is essentially the series finale of the 2012 show. I also really like the Last Ronin because of how dark it is.

@@Pixel-dan Yeah, and to better differentiate Raph and Mikey, his belt and kneepads are all scratched up, like his shell, meanwhile Mikey hardly has any.
Glad to see I’m not alone in recognizing that these are based on Eastman’s pencils and Laird’s inks, a reversal of the original NECA Mirage TMNT. Jim Lawson’s work is similar but was based on this style.
Yeah, calling these Lawson is false. If you are copying another person's style, it doesn't make it yours. These are Eastman's turtles. Maybe it takes an actual artist to understand and see the difference but that's how it is.
I’ve mentioned this on a couple other reviews but these remind me heavily of the 2003 TMNT designs, and I think that’s why I like these so much because that show’s style is very similar to these particular comic turtles.
For me these figures have almost ideal iconic look. Some doubt about the same red masks for all four brothers but the anatomy, grungie brutal style and steady standing on normal foots - just awesome.
These are my favourite TMNT figures of all time. ❤️ It’s not Jim Lawson, it would be more accurate to say it’s Peter Laird’s style from Return to New York, although Jim Lawson did adopt it later on.
From what I understand back when they did return to New york jim lawson, only did the pencils and kevin eastman and peter laird did the inking nowdays jim does both pencils and inking and his art style has evolved crazy
@@jackko21 Jim Lawson has directly addressed this, as there's been a number of people swearing blind they are not based on his style: he said specifically that he was drawing them in his own style at the time with no guidance from Eastman and Laird, but his style did evolve over time. Pretty much everyone involved in the creation of these has said they are Lawson turtles, including the sculptor, NECA and even Eastman (although I can't find the quote for that one), so yeah. I don't think Lawson minds so much if people don't want to refer to them as Lawson turtles, but he has got a bit upset when people say "oh they're not his, look at his art" and then proceed to show his later work. He is quite specific in emphasising that these are just like his older work.
For this early era of the first volume I definitely get the feeling Jim was drawing his style thru a peter laird prism. Once you get to city at war it gets more his style of boxy turtles.
I'm baffled where this Jim Lawson thing came from. Neca never said such in their reveal at Toy Fair. These are the mid Mirage comic version if the turtles. The ones airbrushed as well on the OG NES game. Dan pointed this out that they didn't look like Lawson. What they do look like is the damn cover of the comic he showed. Drawn by Eastman. Like he did fir the box art. Is it just cause I am old? Mine are on the way this is my version if the turtles I grew up with. Excited to get them.
After all this time, finally some Mirage Turtles! Was very pleased to be able to find these and the other releases without having to pay scalper prices!
Love this set! I've been wanting this version of the TMNT in figure form for a long, long time! I decided to keep the smiling head on Raph--to me, that grin is too unwholesome to be Mikey. And it seems to match the set better as a whole--generally, if Leo, Don and Mike are scowling, then Raph is smiling. 😁
Great review! Thanks for all the in-depth tips and observations. I would love to see NECA give us Ninja Turtles that are reflective of specific artists' work during various arcs. Simon Bisley, Micheal Dooney, Joe Mad, Jim Lee, etc. I also enjoy so many of the various iterations of the Ninja Turtles, but I was really impressed by the animated series produced during the early aughts.
This is my favorite iteration. Lawson wasn’t the first one to draw the turtles like this though. RTNY is from 1989.. Kevin and Peter both started drawing them like this in 1986 with the bulky bodies, the new style of belts, box shaped like heads and long bandanna tails. I understand that this set is based off RTNY but people are crediting Lawson for creating this style of Turtles. Nothing against Lawson (I love Jim lawsons art) but he wasn’t the first to draw them like this. Woulda been cool if they included alternate heads, one set Peter Lairds style and one set Kevin Eastmans style in addition to the Lawson (RTNY)heads. Completing the mirage Trifecta.
Kevin Eastman also did the layouts for these books, and if you look at them, Lawson’s pencils follow those layouts in RTNY. Peter laird’s inks also add alot to their style. They really are Eastman, Laird, and Lawson turtles as you explained.
Hi Dan, I can see that a few people have pointed this out already however Jim lawson was not the main inspiration they have the look but they ate more Eastman style with a touch of Michael Dooney I can see Jim lawson but there's no boxy sharp edges or the squared off fingers and toes so these are definitely a mixture of a few artists
So glad to see someone finally referring to these as the Jim Lawson set. Its insane how many comments are saying "Um actually this isn't Jim Lawson's style"... This set is clearly based on the Return to New York storyline. Jim Lawson penciled RTNY, these are based on his drawings. What's so hard to understand?
As someone who owns full runs of the various Mirage titles. I can kind of understand it. Eastman & Laird did the major work on those early issues from issues 1-10 I want to say. However, guys like Mike Dooney, Steve Lavigne, Jim Lawson, Ryan Browne, Eric Talbot, and Dan Berger usually don't get mentioned dispite their contributions (which does irk me) I think alot of it has to do with how scarce the original comics are (in comics shops as available back issues) even the guest artists issues. The IDW collections of the old issues also have that horrible coloring job(s) which takes away the great b/w art of the original presentation. Also the fact that IDW couldn't print the series in order and just collected the E&L stuff, subbing the guest series stuff to a separate collection series. Granted, since Kevin became re-involved with TMNT and does the Con circuts, people tend to focus on him more. Peter seems to enjoy his retirement and doesn't seem to have much involvement after he sold the rights to Viacom back in 2012, although he did appear with Kevin on Cartoonist Kayfabe to discuss those early issues recently.
I thought there was something off with the whole Michelangelo/Raphael when looking at the box photography as well as how the figures were packaged. The more scratched up turtle is definitely Raph. I know it isn't accurate for the looks, but I would definitely like to see these figures with the toon color masks as well.
I knew I wasn’t the ONLY one who thought these looked more like the Return to NY Turtles a bit more than Jim Lawson’s art (not that it matters though because all the art and figures look amazing)
I honestly prefer the newer Mirage TMNT figures. You can see the influence Jim Lawson's designs had on Jim Henson's 1990 turtles and probably even the 2003 cartoon. I REALLY hope I can find these. ☢ 🐢 🥋 ⚔ 🍕

Also, as someone who is not a NECA fan, because of the spotty quality and the way they present themselves online and in interviews, I am quite impressed by this set!
The Lawson art you showed for comparison was much much later Mirage Lawson art when his style evolved to be a little more boxy and cartooned like that. During Return to NY (and Tales of the TMNT from around this time or earlier) Lawson’s art was very much like these figures. He was of course kind of basing off of the way Eastman and Laird had evolved to draw the Turtles prior to this, so it’s definitely more than fair to credit this Turtle look to Eastmand and Laird.

I don't know how many people have noticed it or randomly found out but if you pop the turtle's heads off there initials are on the inside of each head to help you identify whose head is who 🐢👊
@@Pixel-dan what did you expect🤔 that I of all people wouldn't finish something I started 😆 i spoke why to soon, Within the 1st 2 minutes you're like which one's Raphael and Michaelangelo then 5 minutes later after I wrote that you popped the heads off.. when I got mine and I opened them up and was looking at Raphael, I figured Michaelangelo would have the opposing head and Raphael would have the gridded expression... leave it to the 87 cartoon to make my mind think like that 😆 But I popped the heads off and looked inside and saw the the individuals
If you read the books during the Mirage Comics era the boys are very well identifiable by their personalities not just their weapons. I prefer the all red “team” colors, the toy line & cartoon introduced the other colors which is okay but the initials on belts are too silly for my liking.
I don't like the fact that they all have red instead of their original colors. You could put any weapons on either one because they all look like Raphael. I don't need 4 Raphael figures. They would have look so much better with the original, blue, orange, purple and Red colors. I won't buy them unless I could sell them and make a profit off of them. They look great/fantastic though. I just don't like that they have just red instead of their original colors.

Unfortunately your video is continuing the misconception that these aren't Lawson turtles. It's 100% the Return to New York style. Your video does the same mistake others do - they google Lawson art, and get stuff from his Volume 4 art, instead of his Volume 1 art. His style changed a lot. Bust out your Return to New York comics, and you'll see these are 100% based on that series.
We don’t wanna call Lawson turtles for a reason. You’re giving Lawson full credit for a style of turtles he didn’t invent or draw first. Yes this set is based off the RTNY comics but Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman came up with that style long before Lawson. RTNY is from 1989. Peter and Kevin started drawing the turtles in this new style at least 3 years before RTNY. The style you’re referring to as Jim Lawsons “later style” that’s his only original style that he came up with. If you call them Lawson turtles it sounds like you’re discrediting the artists who drew them in this style first. People are only focusing on the fact this is a RTNY inspired set so you’re labeling it Lawson and giving him credit for that entire design. So if you wanna give Lawson full credit you’d have to prove he was the first artist to draw them in this style. I can’t find any evidence of him drawing them like this before Peter and Kevin did in 1986. 3 years before RTNY…
I am not to found of these. In my eyes they are to bulky and to boxy. I am looking forward to the _Turtles XL action fig delux set_ , even if the price tag on that is about *657* USD ~£515 😬 here in Sweden (7000SEK).
@@Pixel-dan Yes. But I compare them with the Viacom(?)/PlayMates Turtles from 2012* (aimed for kids), and the NECA figs that all had red bandanas. (based on the comics, and also came in a B&W version) *)If I have understand it correctly, there was a more "box-looking", almost like N64 graphic, set even here. But I refere to the Nickelodeon more scared figures.

@@Sammo212 Good for you for asking!
These figures look more like Peter Laird turtles.
They're both. Based on his design.
What do you think about mutant mayhem figures?
They look great! Can't wait to get my hands on them!
We need to have a pep-talk with the photographer, since this is strike two (April 2.0 giraffe neck)
What does this mean?
I wish they would sell them individually. I would get Leo but the whole pack is just too much to justify. Plus Neca may make good stuff but they just seem to love scalpers. Something comes out and it sells out quick but there are hundreds on eBay for even more then retail.
That's a very menacing smile
Are they Target exclusives?
Where can you buy these? I’m so confused they say target has them but then they say target does not have them. Where can I buy this?
At a target if they're in stock.
I hope I can find this set. I don’t think my local targets have got them yet. I’ve found everything but this set and 2 of the stores I went to had just put out there stuff but no 4 pack. I know there doing a TMNT drop on the 26th and a couple store already put out the displays.
Yea. They're a tough find. And you've got Mutant Mayhem dropping today as well.
They look more like Peter Laird than Lawson.
That's because Peter Laird did the inks and Jim Lawson did the pencils.
I did address this in the video.
This set is gorgeous!
Yea it is
Love too see the review on I’m literally dreaming of these figures they look nice I love to see your take on them great vid
Thank you so much!
Where can I get these?
I don't know how many people have noticed it or randomly found out but if you pop the turtle's heads off there initials are on the inside of each head to help you identify whose head is who 🐢👊
I should watch the rest of the video before I comment but lol glad you noticed that too
Ha! At least you got to the end of the video!
@@chrisbarcode3411 Awesome!
@@Pixel-dan cowabunga 🐢👊
How do you open it???
Can someone please tell me where can these be bought and for how much?
Thanks for the review Dan.
$160. Target.
Where did u get this? When will it be hitting online stores
Target site just listed them today. They retail for 150
Dan is this set still available to pick up anywhere
Best you can do is keep checking Target.
This iteration of turtles always confused me, I could only tell them apart by their weapons
Haha! That's all of us. :-D
If you read the books during the Mirage Comics era the boys are very well identifiable by their personalities not just their weapons.
I prefer the all red “team” colors, the toy line & cartoon introduced the other colors which is okay but the initials on belts are too silly for my liking.
@@traviswilcox3472 I can get that.
Do you still collect from super7 or am I just not seeing it on your channel 😅
Is it just me, or are all these NECA TMNT action figures super hard to find/buy?
I don't like the fact that they all have red instead of their original colors. You could put any weapons on either one because they all look like Raphael. I don't need 4 Raphael figures. They would have look so much better with the original, blue, orange, purple and Red colors. I won't buy them unless I could sell them and make a profit off of them. They look great/fantastic though. I just don't like that they have just red instead of their original colors.
Are you saying this on purpose to bait people?
Couldn’t get my hands on these and some places that are selling them I don’t trust lol
I wouldn't trust anyone but Target, NECA, and a friend. haha
@@Pixel-dan 100% lol
@@abepcf1526 You get it!
Daaamn! These look sick!!
They're really good!
Can the heads pop off? Thank you for answering my question.
No Problem
@@Pixel-dan I just started reading the comics again from the beginning.
@@Cinquan Now that is an endeavor my friend!
dude that's Micheal Dooney turtles
were do you buy these? besides ebay
Targets.
I have no attachment to the original comics Turtles, but maaaaaan, those are some nice figures!
I def remember first buying the Return to NY comic as a kid....i was like WTH am i reading??? Lol it was nothing like the cartoon
So amazing that you like them regardless!
Not at all!
Ugh... Target! I guess I won't be getting these. Hopefully they'll be sold somewhere else later.
I’d liked to know why neca does this to us
COWABUNGA! LOVE THE NECA TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES FIGURES AND BOX COVER ART MASTERPIECE! VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE CONTENT. THANKS PIXEL DAN FOR SHARING!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Just trying to help the community out ya know!
Super cool
@@TurtleC0mic Lawson started pencils in issue 9. It's his design with the flatter face without the prominent beak.
I addressed this in the video.
OG red sliders!!!!!
✅👏💪🏽
Why didn't they use Jim Lawson's art on the box?
That’s a great question
Because they are not based on his art.
@@truerc yes they are, he did the pencils for that 3 issue comic.
@@destroyedbyfeds Doesn't matter. These are basically identical to some Eastman art and not even close to Lawson.
@@truercyes it does, it's based on Return to New York which was pencilled by Jim Lawson. How arrogant do you want to be?
Are these Target exclusive?
Yes they are.
@@Pixel-dan Dang thats too bad. We dont have Targets in PR. 🙁
I think target just got them early cause I’ve seen a few people say that they will be available everywhere after the 25th.
Do you have the mutant mayhem figures yet if so I can’t wait for your review you were my childhood😃
Nope waiting to hunt for them just like you guys!
Dude the new mutant mayhem figure's are here! when are you gonna review them!!
When I can get my hands on them!
It looks like they screwed up and got em mixed up. Yet again proving why they had to give them different colors and shapes to tell em apart 😅😅
ha. You might be right!
When the mutant mayhem figures release will you do reviews for them?
Of course! You're wanting those!? I know I am!
I am not to found of these. In my eyes they are to bulky and to boxy.
I am looking forward to the _Turtles XL action fig delux set_ , even if the price tag on that is about *657* USD ~£515 😬 here in Sweden (7000SEK).
You think theyre' more bulky than the other turtles?
@@Pixel-dan
Yes. But I compare them with the Viacom(?)/PlayMates Turtles from 2012* (aimed for kids), and the NECA figs that all had red bandanas. (based on the comics, and also came in a B&W version)
*)If I have understand it correctly, there was a more "box-looking", almost like N64 graphic, set even here. But I refere to the Nickelodeon more scared figures.
@@grotgrusson5124 Oh. Interesting!
These turtles are the worst! They look like four Raphaels (red eye masks) with different weapons!
Raphael is fine, but…
Leo = Blue
Donnie = Purple
Michelangelo = Orange
I AM SO GOING TO BUY THIS…….if I can find it…..
That's the thing. So hard to find!
