That is so funny. It reminds me of the time when my wife, Penny and I would have medical appointments back to back. So we are always in the same exam room together.
My appointment was first and was asked this same question by a new nurse. I looked at my wife, then at the nurse. I said in a shaky voice "yyeess". My wife burst out laughing. She did the same thing during her appointment.
The nurse reported us both to our doctor (that we had known for decades). He came in and told us to stop messing with the new staff, we were scaring them.
Unfortunately, after 43 years, my wife passed away suddenly in 2020. I thank you very much, sir. This brought back some rather fond and funny memories.

The medical profession is taking the opportunity to provide safe avenues of seeking help from domestic violence. They only ask the question when the patient is alone. And now they are also asking male patients and not just their female ones in recognition that all genders can be subject to it and that there are also significant social penalties for men to report abuse. They are not the same problems that women face, but they are real and it is good that the medical professional is taking an unbiased and supportive stance on the issue.

Sorry to hear about your mother's problems. Having recently had a colonoscopy, I can completely sympathise; the clearing of the bowels is *_definitely_* the worst bit of the whole process. I'm in the UK, and anaesthesia is (from what I understand) only used in cases where it's very likely the patient will not be able to deal with the process well (children, those with developmental issues, people with dementia, etc). Sedation is offered, and that can be asked for at any point before or during the procedure. Patients also have free access to a nitrous oxide and air inhaler when they're on the table. I don't think of myself as someone who deals with pain particularly well, but I went without anything, and the only discomfort was a few seconds of sharp, crampy, trapped-gas pain as the probe went around the bends.

They didn't used to. But it's a good thing that they do.

My wife was wearing flats, but her toe still caught a cobblestone at a vacation location we were visiting.
So I ask the guy I’m talking with ‘Was that the sound of a coconut hitting the ground!’
Yep. Wife did a perfect faceplant.
She’s on Coumadin, after a heart valve replacement, so we head to the hospital fearing a head injury could cause a brain bleed.
In the 20 minutes it took to get the hospital, her face at the impact area blew up like a balloon.
She’s lucid the whole time, so they make her go through registration.
I’m standing right there, and even though we told her what had happened, she stares at me while she’s asking my wife ‘do you feel safe at home?’ My wife says’ yes.’ She’s still staring at me and she’s forcefully demanding to know ‘Do you feel safe at home?
    I whisper’Lady. I’m standing right here.’
    lol!
The wife was fine. The colors her face went through were amazing. Black, purple, green, yellow, brown…

I had a similar experience with a nurse a few years ago. I'm in my 60s and retired, and when she asked if there was anyone in my house making me feel unsafe, I replied that I had firearms, and if anyone should feel unsafe it would be anyone who threatened me.

I reminder when I got my last colonoscopy. The nurse handed me a pack of things to help prep myself. (Clearing salt and the like). She said, “Here is your party pack. It’s a party for one.” 🤣 she was so right. The party was going wild that evening.

Fyi, it's always a good idea when screening to ask if the individual feels safe at work. It's also not just "domestic" violence, but there's an importance to include neighbors when considering safety at home.

As a nurse I have discovered if you want answers limited to a specific topic you have to ask specific questions. Broad questions do have the place as well just not in this context. That is of course you want to hear how unsafe their home is because their son in law hasn’t replaced a step yet and it’s been 5 days and he never dose anything he says he is going to do.
