    *** Important UPDATE:
    - this bug was fixed in the Mac OS Big Sur 11.4 software update. This issue was caused by a data reporting error which overestimated ssd usage.

      @lawrencelim6890 3 года назад +18

@charlesmercs Actually, if you installed the update, all the extra, misreported memory swaps that were reported prior are removed. You can compare the before and after by running an ssd test on 11.3 and comparing to a test done on 11.4. Therefore, it is not “permanent” nor was there ever actually terabytes worth of data being written on the ssd to begin with. Anyone who saw massive amounts of data being written before will see the correct reporting now with greatly reduced numbers.

It’s not the processor that wears out. It’s the on board memory that may wear out prematurely according to some. Constant writing to the memory wears out the individual cells that comprise the drive. The problem here is that Apple will not confirm or deny. Most people don’t demand that kind of usage from their storage. Most people usually upgrade their machines more frequently than every 5 years. I say it’s a non-problem.

Not entirely sure about this, I have the M1 MBP 16gb ram 1tb, And I have been testing this to see how much memory swap was happening. To give you a perspective, My daly use of this computer is as follows: I use safari for emails, sometimes Chrome, I play some intense Intel games, I edit with Final Cut Pro, I use Luminar AI (intel version still) I do restart my computer about once a week. So far the maximum memory swap I have seen in a week is 7GB, So this would take decades to kill the SSD from Swap memory. I can understand that this might be a bit more of an issue with the 8gb ram models, but I don't think it would be this big of a difference. I used to do the same work on a 2017 15" MBP with 16gb or ram as well and I would get an average of 50gb a week of swap. From 2017 to now my ssd is at 97%. Hope this helps.

Ssd degradation is exponential. As your Ssd gets filled up. Imagine this scenerio. 60% of storage is used. The rest 40% of the Ssd will mainly be write and rewrite. That's why most laptops have a software to notify you to have less than 80% storage used to increase the lifespan. Look up linus video on Ssd.

No, when it reaches 100% the bad cells start failing and you get data loss, while your swap files continue destroying the remaining cells at an accelerated rate, because your useable cell counts decrease after each nand cell failure. It's a cascading accelerating domino effect.

I just want to add something. One technique used by SSD controllers to extend the life span of devices is to spread the writes on differents cells, which means the impact of dead cells will be exponential. For example, if you have 50% of your cells dead it will take less than half of the time to kill the remaining 50%. This is the reason the expected lifespan of SSD increases with the size of it.

Just a couple months ago such a notion for a MacBook Air was absurd if not laughable. Although these machines are capable, that isn’t quite their intended use case. Consider how one would never attempt to cut down a tree with a kitchen knife even if the knife was “sharp enough” to do so. I am a professional librarian, and I really appreciate your "instinct" to do due diligence research before accepting the hype and the media claims. You have now convinced me to go ahead and get the M1 mini, as I am just coming from a late 2012 Mini that lasted for 9-10 years (which, in my opinion, is a LONG time for a computer to do well, and it is still not doing so badly!). If people think their computers should last until 2037 as their main computer, they should just go buy a typewriter, because they are the wrong customer for the product, and not the other way around. Again, thanks. And I love how when you make a pronunciation error, or something like that, you leave it in and turn it into a joke - you are in on the joke, and I love people like that. THANK YOU!

Decent video and earned a like, I would like to provide you with some more detailed information on how SSDs work so you can get a better understanding of the uproar from some of the more technical folk at the time (ignoring the apple hate train people). To begin SSD chips are made up of many cells that store the data, there are currently four types of memory cells SLC, MLC, TLC and QLC. They can store 1, 2, 3 or 4 bits respectively and as you increase the number of bits stored per cell you reduce speed and more importantly endurance. The best SLC has 3 times the endurance of the best MLC which has 6 times the endurance of the best TLC flash. The cells get worn as they are written to so the more you write the faster the SSD dies. Because of this characteristic, SSDs often have some tricks up their sleeve to make them more reliable.
Firstly they perform what's known as wear levelling, instead of writing to the first available block of cells it'll spread the writes out as evenly as possible. The more empty space you have the more it has to work with. Secondly, while they may report as using the same system of measurement that consumer hard drives use where there's 1000 bytes in a kilobyte, this actually is not the case on most SSDs. Most SSDs actually contain the full amount of storage on the label in proper 1024 bytes per kb and the difference is reserved for SLC cache and wear levelling. On enterprise drives there are sometimes even extra chips just for this purpose. Some drives overprovision more than others and will have extra flash beyond what the label may suggest.
A simple napkin math calculation for best case drive endurance is the following: SLC can handle up to 100,000 complete drive writes, enterprise class MLC drives 30,000, Consumer MLC 10,000 and TLC 5,000. Realistically the Macbook is most likely using TLC so the expected life in of a 256 GB drive to use as an example could be as high as 1.22 PB (not accounting for any potential mitigations such us extra flash not labelled for wear levelling and endurance)
Because of what I have outlined above the more full your drive is the faster it wears and as cells die (not noticeable right away because of the overprovisioning) you have less empty, healthy cells to spread the load and they start dying faster in a non-linear fashion. Now all that being said I expect, even if the issue persisted, I would still expect the batteries to wear way before the flash actually does. Lithium batteries have a fixed life expectancy even if left unused and there are many factors (some of which are common use) that wear the batteries faster. I miss the days of removeable batteries and everything being socketed. The T440 is the last great repair and upgrade friendly laptop.

@@DayoAworunse No problem, it’s a real shame that modern products have such a lack of documentation. Back in the late 70s and through to the mid 80s everything had comprehensive manuals and even large programming books to teach the user how to operate the machine and load their own software.
A lot of the minor things needed to repair electronics such as capacitors were available at your local Radio Shack, circuits were simpler and easier to figure out. If you couldn’t figure it out, there were often service manuals available for more expensive products because back then the consumer durables concept was still alive for appliances.

My observation is, that apps not optimised for M1 tend to use 2-4x more RAM that M1 optimised, there fore causing more RAM swapping. I have Mac mini M1 16Gb/512Gb, I am using it as a Web bot (1.5/1.5Tb upload/download traffic/monthly generated) with Python 3.8 +Selenium via Firefox (21 parallel browser sessions, around 1Gb of RAM each). It was running Python via Rosetta 2, even Firefox was native, when launched from Python, it was also running via Rosetta, and it generated over 2Tb/month written to SSD. Now, when in mid Feb Apple Silicon optimised version of Python was released, I switched to Python 3.9.2 +Selenium via Chrome, now all runs native on M1, no RAM swapping any more, and during 2 weeks only around 250Gb written to SSD. Means 4x less than with previous version of Python via Rosetta 2. So I think more apps becomes optimised, this problem will disappear

I personally consider the likelyhood of something being damaged to be lower than in prevous models, mainly because it's running at much lower temperatures and because the power used is much lower, which might make it easier to build a power supply which suffers less from instabilities. I guess the battery will be the weakest link and maybe the RAM, which in my experience seems to age. But these are all assumptions. I'm definately also gonna give this laptop a try. I got already 2 failed SSDs (personals ones ... hundreds related to my IT job). One in linux machine another in Windows machine. The windows one got only 9TB written and reported 3% wear ... and just died. Other one was used for few years in 2 computers until it died.
It was not a problem, since I was able to swap them for new drive next day ... not so easy in the mac (although I've seen it's possible to do - by a proffesional).

Nice video :). Also note SSD TBW ratings are sorta like “rated shutter life” numbers for higher end cameras - just a general guideline.
Some cameras with 300,000 rated clicks fail prematurely, most never reach that number, a good many go beyond that.

What none of them are realizing....is that most of their machines in the past had no easy way for them to track the life of their hard disk’s life accurately. WINDOWS machines have use disk space to create additional virtual memory for decades- sucks that you cannot replace the drive when it fails though, regardless of brand of machine, as the drive is a completely independent item that is easy to design as a removable/replaceable item.

Re - the SSD cannot be replaced because it is soldered in.
Anything soldered on the main board can be de-soldered and a replacement part be soldered in its place.
It may be more expensive to repair, but it can be done by a repair shop.

One little problem when you talk about lifespan Dayo. You're talking about the length of time until 100% of the hard-drive is used. The computer will stop functioning way before 100% is used! There has to be at least enough room left for the Operating System!
So.... if you've got a 256Gig drive, you'll be jettisoning documents way before that time just to keep the computer operating.
I still think this is blown way out of proportion. It seems to be extreme heavy users and, potentially, a problem with Big Sur that can be rectified, but... I thought I'd best point out your glaring problem when it comes to discussing how much of a hard-drive needs to be used up to render the computer unusable.
    Cheers mate.

Put it this way, 16 years ago, I was about to buy a Mac Mini with Intel Core Duo. It still works, but its stuck on Leopard. I've had 4 computers since then. I now have 2 M1s. Zero regrets. If they break after 4 years I'll consider it a fair enough lifespan. I plan to replace them at 4-6 years regardless.

I have a MacBook Air which is nine years old. It still runs but it is barely usable anymore. Applications are more demanding than the machine can handle, even internet browsing is a pain.
I would not worry about using a M1 powered machine for more than six years.
