My Thoughts on Adam Page vs Swerve Strickland - AEW All Out 2024

  • From The Stevie Richards Show Episode 12 - I Did NOT Like Adam Page vs Swerve Strickland Spots - AEW All Out 2024
Stevie Richards was not happy with the variety of ridiculous spots "Hangman" Adam Page and Swerve Strickland subjected themselves to in the AEW All In 2024 "unsanctioned" cage match - they used splinters of wood, staples, syringes, chair shots to the head, cinder blocks, barb wire... everything seemingly except for the cage itself!
So what was wrong with the Adam Page vs Swerve Strickland main event? In this video, Stevie discusses not only the variety of potentially career ending spots, but the amount of them all in one match, between two wrestlers who have both switched between babyface and heel multiple times. Where are the checks and balances and why isn't anybody stopping AEW from letting wrestlers from doing whatever pops into their heads? Where is Tony Khan?

Pro wrestling, for the most part, is meant to be two people telling a story about why it is that they're fighting each other, using moves that look real and hard-hitting but are as (relatively speaking) safe as you can make them. For the most part, AEW is two people working together to do things that they think look cool or will "wow" people, using moves that often look extremely choreographed and/or nonsensical but can be incredibly dangerous.

Someone needs to outright Mythbusters the idea of sanding down a steel chair to make it less dangerous, at this point. Construct something that can swing a chair down onto a force plate, using something like compressed air so that every swing can be done consistent with the same force, see if the amount of force being exerted on the plate is actually noticeably different between an unmodified steel chair & a sanded/filed down steel chair, and then see how each compare to what's generally considered the minimum amount of force needed to cause damage (or at least a concussion) to a human skull/brain.

Their goal, from a storytelling perspective was to show how deranged Hangman has become and how low that he would stoop to destroy Swerve at any cost. I was there live and the match felt appropriately intense but, like this video, I can't applaud some of the most dangerous spots. Could they have better used the cage? @@mikhaelpence570 yea apparently people could’ve been treated better. I think everyone in ecw was fucked up or crazy tho, I’ll fault Paul heymen for not paying his wrestlers, but as far as the actual show or their decisions, nah. @@LoveEatingBricks That was how ECW was. There were barely any storylines in ECW but producing another extreme match. Why do you think ECW made a significant impact back then? Because of the type of violent matches, they would have. ECW made a name not only for being Extreme but because of its underground VHS tapings or available on most public access networks.

If two guys want to beat each other for real and look like tough guys, there is MMA, boxing, etc. that they can join, train and do that thing for a living. NOBODY thinks these wrestlers are tough by hitting each other with objects. People in the crowd know it's scripted, but the worst thing is many don't even think those stunts actually hurt a lot. They are hurting their bodies for bunch of clowns to laugh at them and have fun. Tony Khan is really the wealthiest garbage wrestling fan on earth.

Respectfully, someone who didn't watch the show, doesn't watch the product, and probably doesn't understand the story going forward - it's hard to take this person's opinion entirely to heart. Like him making note of them not using the cage as a weapon and it being unnecessary is entirely false. They used the cage plenty. It was done as method to keep them contained. They already had a Texas Death Match. They didn't need another match like that.
I respect his opinion on the danger as someone who did this for a living, but his critiques of their product is a little ridiculous when he isn't really educated on their programming.
Also it's the Blackpool Combat Club.
Also in like, a week or whatever, will Stevie eat crow when AEW gets an increase to north of $170M per year for just WBD, possibly more with PPVs on MAX, and possibly more with a Fox show?
