Yay Whitney! Best of luck Mike. Your channel is one of my favorites and I really appreciate you showing the hard prep work that goes in to a hike like Whitney and the ups and downs of training for this hike. Can't wait to see your videos from the trip.
Err I can't read my reply I just made to you. Strange. Anyways...will do thanks! There will be about 13 of us watching each others backs. And will put up a map that anyone can use to track me :)
Just finished my first 20.5 mile day hike. Major cramps as soon as I finished which made me feel I am not ready for the next big hike, lol. Wondering what your plans are and how you know when it’s the right time for Whitney? Not that I have plans for Whitney at the moment, lol.
I don't know I've never had cramps but it is common. For me, strenuous hiking a few times a week and the gym helps the most. Staying hydrated and downing electrolytes on these hikes helps a lot to prevent cramping. Some people use salt packs to help with cramps. I'm not an expert on that I'd look it up online. As for the right time, I didn't think I was ready for Whitney this year. I got back from the climb a week ago (video is uploading right now!) and surprised myself at how well I did. Going 21 miles and 6,600 feet, especially at a higher altitude is hard to practice for where I live. You just need to be in the best shape you can. The stairmaster is your friend when preparing for Whitney. Last year I'd spend an hour or more on one. Had to work up to that of course. Make sure you stretch after a hike too.
Hey thanks! My parents owned a custom cabinet shop until recently, I sure miss having that to play in. Sometimes making things is more fun than actually using them.
@@outsidewithmike Dude my dad had VW bus in which he did something similar. Okay quick question for the "Fat Guy and His Backpack Channel." How would you recommend I prepare? Can you do it in a few days or do you have to do it all in the same day?
@@fatguyhisbackpack5755 Whitney? You can get a 2 day permit and backpack it. In preparing for the 1 day hike I lost weight, changed my diet, joined a gym, did exercises at home, hiked progressively tougher routes locally. It's a serious venture and many seasoned hikers fail to summit. In case you haven't seen it, if you go back 30 videos or so on my channel you can see a video where we rescued some hikers. I have 3 Whitney vids total around that time. The trip 2 weeks earlier we turned around due to snow. If you want to do Whitney take it very seriously, it's the toughest thing I've ever done and I've yet to even summit. it's about 6,500 ft of elevation gain and almost 22 miles round trip. If the hike doesn't get you the altitude might. Go with someone who's been there. It's an extremely difficult day hike ;)
@@fatguyhisbackpack5755 You could try a friend's channel, he backpacks Coe all the time. You could ask him in the comments of any video, he'll answer www.youtube.com/@rodoutdoors I see there are some hiking trails at Hollister Hills. Try AllTrails. I don't know enough about Coe, I've backpacked it twice., but there are tons of challenging routes there. Mt Sizer is one I want to do once te weather cools down.
