    Hey Mike - a bay area local as well, I'm pretty sure we live in the same town as I know a lot of the areas in your videos. I'm in my early-mid twenties, and this hike was never even on my radar until I saw last year's attempt. I'm too busy with school right now, and hopeful to be starting a physically intensive career in the next couple months, but this is absolutely a hike I'm looking to do before I'm 30. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

      @@nationalparksprincess3216 Thank you, NPP! I freak out thinking about that footage being lost. I should figure out a way to get my phone number on that camera. I'd gladly give all my cameras away just to get that SD card back. The cliffs were definitely a trip. I though I'd be scared but I wasn't too much...it was sketchy though and I was cautious for sure. Congrats on your summit Mike! We all know how much this meant to you. I’ve so appreciated your videos, showing your determination and realness of your preparation work. Hope to see many more from you. You’re a real inspiration. What time did you start? How long did the hike up (and then down) take? Looked like you kept a good pace and took breaks where needed.

      Hey there! Thank you I really appreciate it. We started at around 1:15 am, it took Rod and I 19 hours or so to finish. Fairly long time for Whitney, but most of the group took our time. I don't know the exact times. There's a link to a tracking map in my previous video description where you can click on waypoints and see how long it took.
      And to think I thought about cancelling the trip. Soooo glad I didn't. Having completed this will make it easier to stay motivated for my next big challenge, whatever that may be. Maybe Grand Canyon, Matt lives near there.

    HUGE CONGRATS Mike!! The Grand Canyon is calling, and now through end of Oct. is a great time to do a Rim2Rim from the North Rim to the South Rim.
    (Park at the South Rim, near Bright Angel Lodge. Take the TransCanyon Shuttle at 1pm to the North Rim. Either stay at Kaibab Lodge or the lodging options at the North Rim Lodge. The next morning, leave just before sunrise, so that you can enjoy the North Rim Trail in it's entirety) 24mi from trailhead to trailhead. Water stations located at the trailhead, then at 5.25mi down at Manzanita Rest, then at 7.25mi down at Cottonwood Campground, and at 14.5mi down at Phantom Ranch. So you don't need to carry much water at all, and you can keep the packs very small and very light. After Phantom, there's water 5mi away at Havasupai Garden, and then in 1.5mi at 3 Mile Rest House, and in another 1.5mi at 1.5 Mile Rest House. Perfect temps this time of year, both for start time, and once you get towards the bottom, and into the inner gorge where Phantom and the Colorado River are. You'll absolutely love it, and the Canyon is just amazing to be in.

    • @austinado16
      @austinado16 Месяц назад +1

      @@outsidewithmike Easily done on your own. The trail is very easily followed, and other than the option at Phantom, to veer left, and go across the Black Bridge and up the S. Kaibab Trail, you'll easily just stay on one trail(you'll be veering right as you leave Phantom and pass the round Mule Pen, and then crossing the silver walled aluminum bridge, walking through the Bright Angel Campground, and continuing to veer right at the Colorado and crossing on the large Silver Bridge. Again, veer right after the bridge, and remain on that trail to the top).

      @@outsidewithmike It's absolutely amazing to look over the rim, see how massive it is, and how the scale is almost incomprehensible, and then take those first steps down into the trail. Mind candy!
      You'll find tips on how to do it successfully in the description boxes of my runs there; from clothing and hat, to footwear and amount of stuff you bring.
      Pack really light, and only carry enough water to get you to the next water station, especially on the downhill. That's only 5.25mi distance from the top of the North Rim, down to Manzanita Rest Stop. Carrying too much weight in the canyon will destroy your legs, especially on the that steep 5.25mi of descent.
      Don't wear boots in the Canyon. Too heavy and too cumbersome, plus the big clunky soles pitch your feet and ankles all over the place, because it's not a smooth trail, and there are 10,000 mule steps made of rocks and logs. Same goes for stiff hiking shoes with narrow toe boxes. Recipe for disaster. A trail runner style shoe or even better, VivoBareFoot Primus Trail FG, are a great tool. You'll see that I run there in Vibram FiveFingers, and so does my daughter. We also backpack there in fully loaded packs, in the FiveFingers. I'm now 61 and she's 25.
