  • Despite a common notion that torque does not exist in SnowRunner, is that actually the case? I decided to see if I could find out the answer, having seen a few players exploring the idea.

    The problem is that the game lacks a realistic relationship between torque, rpm and hp, not to mention tire grip physics (this is where tire size, contact patch & pattern plus weight matters). Hence why the medium trucks often tend to outpull the heavy ones in Snowrunner.

    In my opinion, it's never been a question of if there is torque or not, its that the amount of torque gained from going into lower gears is nowhere near what it should be.
    When you shift an engine that makes 2000ft-lbs from like a 4.0 gear ration to something like 7.5 like a lot of low range gearing is on big trucks, the torque multiplication is almost exponential, but in game it is very minimal, which is why it SEEMS more like wheel speed governs ability.

    This is a good start. But it reveals another big issue with the game mechanics that I’ve not seen anyone talk about: The way the game deals with differential locks and limited slip differentials.
    Firstly. Diff lock does not actually lock the pairs of wheels on the same axle as a real one would. A simple turning circle test with diff lock on and off will reveal no change to the turning circle. Also with diff lock on, even in a straight line, you can see one wheel stop turning on one end of the axle while the other free spins in mud or other low traction surface.
    Secondly, there are several vehicles in game that have limited slip differentials that are listed as “diff lock always on”. That’s not how LSDs work. They are open diff unless traction is decreased one one side of the axle. Then the LSD engages.
    Would love to see this (among other things) fixed in the next Runner sequel.

    • @MrBrander
      @MrBrander Год назад +2

      I also noticed that the rev gauge in the cockpit view doesn't actually show the actual RPMs of the engine but it shows the economy of the engine. I noticed that if the RPMS are around 2000-2500, you have good fuel economy aka the fuel consumption is really good. If its between 2500-3000 RPM the fuel consumption is ok and everything beyond 3000 RPMs is just big fuel consumption which is bad fuel economy. If your RPMs are constantly over 3500 RPMs, that's extremely bad fuel economy and you should try to fix it. And if you get your RPMS below the 2000 RPM, that's extremely good fuel economy for your truck. That means you spend very little fuel to get to places even when you're hauling a heavy load. That's a really nice feature if you're trying to get your truck work as an independent unit instead of having to be supported by other trucks constantly by fueling it all the time.
      Speedometer is as you would imagine, it shows your actual speed in the game world. And I think it was somewhere around 35 km/h, when going beyond that significantly increases the risk of damaging your suspension and wheels while driving.

    • @MrBrander

      I noticed the Low- sometimes takes a really long time to "spool up". Meaning that it feels like the game is simulating getting all the slack spooled out between the engine and the wheels in the drivetrain. When it eventually has spooled all that slack out of the drivetrain, almost any kind of load starts to move. But usually I'm lazy and I just bump the gear to Low and then to Low+ because it takes less time to spool all the slack out of the drivetrain with the Low gear compared to Low-. And when I have started moving with decent phase, I try to bump the gear straight to High gear which either gets the truck going really fast for the conditions or stalls it. When it gets going, that feels a bit unrealistic because usually in that case in the real life either the engine would stall immediatelly or the transmission would just blow up but there's no damage modeled in the game which would come from over stressing the gearbox. So instead of gearbox blowing up, the truck just jolts to a much faster speed and keeps going like that.

  • @gammafox5431
    @gammafox5431 Год назад +8

    I've only began to notice this recently, after the new phase was released.
    Granted, trucks would always "stall" when the automatic gearbox tried to shift up at the wrong time, prompting you to use low/high gears even before this phase.
    But now I'm seeing trucks refuse to move on low gear exactly like you demonstrated, which I haven't observed until recently.
    Maybe it's because the newer maps are less about deep muddy swamps and more about dirt trails?

    • @ATribeCalledCars
      @ATribeCalledCars  Год назад +1

      Could be that it's simply more obvious because of map design but hard to say. Unless we can make it inside Saber Castle.

  • @joshjlmgproductions3313
    @joshjlmgproductions3313 Год назад +2

    One thing that's important to note which I've noticed is: It seems like tire grip (or more accurately, tire grip loss) scales with wheelspeed. When I tested a while ago, Low gear wasn't a shorter gear than 1st, it was just a speed limiter. Because of that, you could just the exact same effect as Low by just mashing the gas pedal on and off in Auto, often letting you go even faster than you would've been able to otherwise.

  • @stug77
    @stug77 Год назад +4

    So in mudrunner there was an rpm dial in the first person view. It didn't show engine rpm, but actually showed "torque", or, what percentage the throttle was open. It appeared as if different gears could have different torque limits. The "1+" gear, while lacking the necessary torque to get moving, allowed the "rpm" needle to move much further than other gears. It was also capable of the most fuel consumption of any other gear, strengthening the theory that the rpm dial was actually throttlebody position.

    This is one of the first things I learned about the game when it was released similar to real life. In low gear you have more torque for pulling, rock crawling, and generally driving through mud. The faster your wheels spin the more wheel spin "less grip" you have therefore the better throttle control you have, the more grip "less wheel spin" you'll have to actually pull yourself along.

    I have over 2.5k hours in snowrunner, but know very little about gaming, in general. I do know a bit about cars, and physics.
    Torque is an engine specification that varies with RPM and is mainly affected by the rotational mass and geometry of the engine's moving parts (to oversimplify).
    Everyone focuses on horsepower, but torque is what you feel, or the net result of what the engine does with that HP. Both are measured by manufacturers at the crank shaft, and do not take into account the parasitic drag of the drivetrain. Maximum engine torque always occurs at a given RPM, and is expressed as xxxHP, producing xxxlb/ftTorque@xxxRPM.
    The transmission simply regulates the levels of torque that reach the drive wheels, based on load, and traction. If you see water/mud/snow being pulled over the tire tops, shift down (reducing wheel speed/torque) until you can see the tires at full throttle. You will gain traction and save fuel. 👍
    Many factors affect traction, but without it, all the power, torque, and gearing in the world are useless. Tire diameter also affects torque and rolling resistance at the wheel (smaller diameter = more torque/acceleration, but more rolling resistance), while tire width has a greater impact on traction.
    For this reason, I almost always run the biggest tires, but spend most my time in the low range, occasionally shifting to H, with the off-road or snowrunner transmissions. 👍
    All that said, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to approximate the factory torque curves, which leaves gearing, traction, and rolling resistance as primary variables. 🤔

    I've found the Kodiak to be a good example: With a fully loaded fuel tank add-on I struggle to climb some inclines (paved road, dirt) on Maine Lowlands when AWD is switched on. With only RWD active the engine's torque is not distributed on two axles and climbing seems faster.

    • @razorblade7108
      @razorblade7108 Год назад

      That is a bad example because that's the opposite of what you would experience in reality. The more wheels you drive, the more torque can be used to push the vehicle forward. If you drive only two wheels, the amount of torque you can put on the ground is limited by their traction. They are more likely to spin than when you power more wheels.

    Heres the gist, that kind of transparent number labeled AngV is angular velocity, and its proven to be an artificial gear changer iirc, the higher the gear the less engine torque transferred to the wheels pretty much, with low - being allowed acces to the full amount, which isn't multiplied btw, there's nothing hyper realistic going on. I don't know exactly how its calculated but that's a very rough draft of how it works.
    TLDR, low - and low can access more engine torque provided the tires can grip.

  • @kriss1_
    @kriss1_ 10 месяцев назад

    It has been changed, low- did not do anything like this earlier, the actual best gear was Low+ and High. To get away from the auto-shifting craziness. High would just fly over most things, and Low+ would give controlled speeds in mud and let you kind-of-crawl. The previous iteration of this you would just be standing there, you can find old videos linked on reddit from 2 years ago showing this.
    Right now it kind of works, however it's not realistic in any way. Diff-locks do not lock anything and the automatic clutch works like a super super strong traction control - it will not allow you to stall the truck when not in high, and the tires have way too much grip. In real life this truck would do one of; 1. break drivetrain or 2. pull the load or 3. spin all drive tires.
