"All Amerikkkan ambition for bada$$ kids..." this is a clear shout out to Joey Bada$$ and his latest album!
I'm a punk/metal kinda guy but this is INCREDIBLE. Also, Black Thought is the greatest rap name of all time. FACT.
Back when I first got into hip-hop in college, the Roots were one of the first artists I really felt and connected with.
I love that Black Thought is still killing it, two decades in.
Think he formed the roots in 87' so it's 3 decades now. God damn.
Chris Check word. I knew of many dude who didnt really listen to "rap" so much but they all liked the roots back in the day.
This dude black thought is nuts guys I'm a rock n metal guy but this track left me going wow man
MattThE FAMADVENTURES/VLOGS I second that emotion.
I third that
Get: The Roots 'How I got over'. Black Though is a masterful poet.
mr. nihilz me too!
Poetry is transcendant. Music is preference but poetry connects despite our aural predilections
I had to replay this track like 5 times before I could even move onto the second track of the EP. Absolute master class in how to rap, there's elite lyricists and then there's Black Thought.
eric dude. You seem to understand exactly what I be tellin cats. It's like this. Blackthought to me is not on my "list" he just exist as MC. Like MC = Blackthought. Thennnn. You have like a top 5 list type shit..
It's like All Stars and 1st ballot Hall of famers. There is NO other rapper in the world 🌎 than can replicate this track. Philly!
I feel like there needs to be a college course solely dedicated to the breakdown of Black Thought's Thoughts
Kenny 92 i mean, for a foreigner like myself with English as a second language, i would definitely sign up for that shit. Im still catching up and learning new things from these verses, and all the old stuff. Black Thought has been my teacher for years.
MutedParrot I'll be right there with you lol ...Black Thought is something special
years ago, i heard berkeley had a short course on 2pac's lyrics -- taught by a grad student.
I have this same thought every time I listen to this ep, glad I'm not the only one.
Play through his disco man, especially everything after 2000. Knowledge in every verse.
Black Thought is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.
Gabriel Malinis and of not your favorite rapper is ASS!
Todd Maek exactly!!!!
Rakim’s favorite rapper lol
Well put
cliché statement
Great reaction, Black Thought is a genius! As you said the complete package, amazing depth of knowledge, extremely lyrical with multi-syllable rhymes through out and a flawless flow. Alien, no doubt.
Black Thought just reads all day.
This is what everyone should do.
He rhymes a bit too.
:P
But yeah, dude is highly educated, and just as importantly, supremely wise.
Got Damn Black Thought is a genius with that pen man ...... My God!!
dude references the assasination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand & Ntozake Shange with Kim & Bey in between? Mutant !
Mr. Al His word play and well versed wisdom from things that he has read is uncommon in Hip Hop he weaves things together like a master basket weaver takes me back to the 90's every time i hear him rap the way he rides the beat is impeccable his tone and cadence is pristine. A lyrical monster ..... Somthing like a Thanos manifest destiny character in my eyes .... He was born to do one thing and thats rap and you hear it!!
So many subscribers. I like it when good people win.
With George and Ryan, we ALL win!
sakhile ntshangase same man I feel good when people get their deserved subs
Yezzir
sakhile ntshangase word
Long time metalhead but the Roots were always one of the hip hop acts I actually listened to on my own accord. Loved the live instrumentation on their tracks (Questlove is an insane drummer) and I loved how deep Black Thought's lyrics were (even though I couldn't always get all the references). Guy is an absolute legend. "How I Got Over" is still one of my favourite songs ever.
Word, I'm hiphop raised but a musician and have always felt the same way about Tool
I love the "Jamaica Funk/Gotta get it into who" line referencing the timeless Tom Browne's Funkin' for Jamaica. The entire EP is ridiculous.
Great review! Black thought is severely underrated. I got stuck on that psych war patients and vampires in the interview ...but what we had to do to survive they'll never do. Its also double entendre about the book interview with the vampire. Where the character louis a vampire told of of his experience to a reporter and what he had to give up to be immortal and how had to take life to survive. And how living an immortal life is lonely and a burden not blessing
definitely on point with the vampire interview line!
also the rich an elite couldn't do what the hustlers and scrapers can reminds me of an AiC song Junkhead ode to steet smarts
This dude once said
This mental murder pay the rent
Lyrically I'm the dominant ingredient,
the swift extravagant
Smooth lubricant
and
Lyrically calculus in this arithmetic hip-hop metropolis
That's just plain fire.
He's been killing it since day one.
philiposm since mutha fuckin DAY ONE!!!!!!
philiposm ...down with the Em iLLa Tant (chuh chuh chuh’) The sound of the dynasty chant we surround your camp and get in the war stance and bring it from the chest now let’s dance !!!
SMH .... BLACK THOUGHT=Perpetuitous
Bar
God !!!
Brilliant. So much genius on that Sway appearance with Method Man, too
Light of day, never see the eyes of the children
With aerosol, we spray to tattoo the face of the building
Night after night, transcend color like a chameleon
Black and white divided the soldier from the civilian

Never listened to Black Thought before now....thanks for making me a fan. Wow.
Steve Lucas listen to the roots albums
listen to "the roots-web"... yr welcome my friend
Steve Lucas listen to the funkflex freestyle you will not be sorry
.
I'm a fan of The Roots already :)
An artist that references Ntozake Shange in their poetry has my undying respect. The work he referred to is For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When The Rainbow Is Enuf.
Pandora Fox thank you for this. I’ve heard this song countless times and I’m still trying to learn about all the references made throughout this song along with the project as a whole
Markus Blex it's alot to take in. He's so brilliant!
Markus Blex and your welcome!
Pandora Fox he really is! As a rapper studying him is full of envy at times but the man is truly a genius. Thank you again!
For now on "LORD THOUGHT"..
yess I have been waiting for some black thought. One of the all time greats without a doubt!!
Black Thought is one of the best mcs out there. This track is 🔥🔥🔥 in every syllable. And btw, no need to apologize for explaining historical facts.
Coming from a metal head this dude is insane, the lyrics in this are raw and so well put together, I’m just about speechless but this is def going on my playlist.
Justin Montgomery I second that!
Tough to go wrong with Black Thought, m'man.
You may also dig Aesop Rock's Impossible Kid. I know I bunch of metal heads that love it.
Make sure you check out the rest of his stuff! He has decades of content at this level.
Thanks for the feedback guys, I’ll definitely dig more into this!
Locksmith is another amazing lyricist you should listen to him
I love the way Thought references history throughout his work. That's one thing that will always be consistent. History. It's been recorded. People will always be able to look back on his music and see the context of his words. And then he weaves modern time references in it too. This dude is a Master of his Craft.
People kill me with credit for this dude. He is the best HipHoper alive hands down. I just hate that peeps really try to place people on his level. He is out of the ether PERIOD!
Very interesting artist! As a middle-aged white man from Northern Europe I have never really been much into hip hop (certainly not mainstream radio-friendly hip hop) but talent can be found everywhere and in all genres - as your Free Thinkers mantra shows - and this guy is definitely extremely gifted, both in terms of lyricism and vocal delivery.
This is a fine example of why this channel is so great - I would never have heard about the artist had it not been for LiV.
After the blacks in Birmingham line he references Franz Ferdinand being shot, which is what caused WW1
What's wrong with Black Thought? Why is he so gifted? Sheesh
Loving you guys! My little bro just came by and showed me your videos and we've been sitting here for the last 5 hours, hooked.
You guys NEED to do a video on Locksmith - The Love
Franz Ferdinand being assassinated was the catalyst of ww1 starting. That’s some deep referencing. 👌
The man sure knows his history...respect
I heard that line and had to do some research
9th vs Thought please... that joint was amazing
Yeah, man. Blistering
Every song tbh. But that one in particular!! Yes
^^
So greatest verse of 2018: 9th vs. Thought Verse 1, or Verse 2?
Gah...
Both slay, but verse 1 sets the stage for the inferno. So I _might_ just edge the 1st one ahead.
Phaque that's a tough choice
Black Thought's album is SO DAMN GOOD! I hate that these new albums are so short, I needed more!
Black Thought passed your favorite rapper's fav rapper skill set long ago and your fav dead rappers at least 10 years back yet he's never mentioned with the greats. Longevity... this man just keeps getting better. This is the best hip hop album I've ever heard bar none
You know you guys wanna do the whole ep!!!
I only recently found your channel and I must admit that being a fan of metal music I only watched the metal reactions up until now. My first exposure to Black Thought was when he was featured on a Linkin Park song called 'X-ecution Style' (Reaction please!). That being said I really enjoyed how you broke the track down and explained the meaning to the lyrics so that someone like me who is not familiar with rap/hip-hop can understand it. Keep up the good work gentlemen and I'll keep watching.
THIS BLACK THOUGHT EP IS FIRE!! 🔥🔥🔥
The reason I love this channel, is that they are very well cultured, and have a lot of knowledge of different topics, this allows them to demystify all the lyrics and that is exactly what I’m interested in!
You guys had me nodding with y'all, stink face and all lol. Blackthought is brilliant and embodies the reason why I love hip hop. He's educating and uplifting Black people. Great reaction gentlemen!! ❤🖤💚
Another great video guys! Keep it up and would love to see more black thought or just lyricists in general.
guys, you are amazing. I feel like you are my friends I go visit sometimes, to have a chat, during which I become a normal, calm or even happy, civilized person again, in today's world madness. thank you!
thats just not black hood..thats all poor hood...I grew up going to pot lucks and enjoying meals on paper or styofaom plates lol...many times of bbg and such by many poor folks brining food together for the community. Love this song...more so cuz as a white/latino the same things happened in my youth of growning up..many times we thrived on nieghborhood togetherness and charity.
*sigh* here we go again
MSP Wellness day tomorrow and
The patreon is amazing by the way guys can't wait for more, sure this will be amazing.
I've appreciated hip hop for a while, but have never really dug into it too deeply. You guys are really helping me explore and understand the genre in a new way.
Black Thoughts and this track are excellent!
Rock on LiV
The Streets - Has it come to this
Black Thought needs to be sponsored by what ever company owns the pen and paper he writes these glorious bars on. Since the 1st time I listened to him spit, I've rewired my brain to decipher everything he says. Black Thought is my sensei! Long live the THOUGHT!
"Dignity and sanity is what the game cost you,
Wake up to the paddles on your chest, we had lost you..."
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Did Black Thought just bring back to life the entire art of rap in that line?!
The answer is yes, and not only is that a fact, but he KNOWS what he did, calling back to his reference to being "electrical voltage, not the regular dosage"....
This is what hip hop / rap / the MC is all about!
I think 9th production was a perfect match for this ep, I automatically expected Primo to be the one, but after listening & thinking about it, 9th was perfect for Thought's solo debut
I appreciate your guys videos / content! #salute
Thank You Ryan and George for explaining everything! I fell in love with Sa-Roc after your reaction. I really like this song too. I am a Metalhead. But damn this guy rules.
Phonte - "Cry No More". Your guys reaction to "So Help Me God" turned me onto him so thank you for that; and in this song he talks about some grown man shit
Word
Being a student of history, I was shook when he mentioned Franz Ferdinand. That was fire.🔥
Fantastic. Not nearly enough of this in my headphones. I need more! Thank you for bringing this to us.
Dope and deserved reaction on an amazing, educational and dope RAP track. Next Level Lyricism as always. Much love Brothers.
That shit was FIRE. We need more of this in our mainstream, no offense meant to current trap artists, but they ain't got shit on this jam. Educational, profound, and just killer flows...how can you choose to NOT bump this type of content but put on 21 21 21 21 21...and then wanna pretend like that shit was dope. I'll never understand our culture here in the USA where we promote and reward the ignorant over those willing to educate.
Love the ROOTS this is fire!! Thanks for sharing this made my day. Wish I could give you guys 2 thumbs up!
Man, I love some styrofoam plate dinner yo....catfish and slaw!!!
This is the first reaction I’ve watched of your guys’ and you guys are amazing. No other reaction channel gives the raw reactions and insightful input at the same time like you guys. Subscribed!
Legendary Black Thought is a Gem man. Just pure rap on a different level. Black Thought is bringing knowledge to the table and the way he constructs his lines and words is out of this damn world. I feel like Black Thought can see the damn Matrix or some shit and like all the words get pieced together and he just spits it with crazy flow, breath control, and wordplay. Hats off to Black thought and Awesome video guys I feel like this could have ran to about 50 minutes to be honest lmfaoooooo.
Black thought is SAVAGE! Thanks for breaking down most bars. I have a little wish if u could react to Jay Z Renegade ft Em. I think it's one of the most powerful feature in Rap. It would be amazing if you guys react to it cuz no one can do it better.🙏🙏
Yall the GOATs. Yall need to do albums not just singles. Keep pushing yall🙏🏽
Being a white 90's kid from the Philly area, Black Thought's rhymes are an inside view and history lesson into what is going on in not only our community but all over. Thought provoking wordsmith.
I've been following Thought since the '90s. I'm not surprised.
Dammit.... I'm over on Patreon catching up and get a notification of a new drop on you tube. Sighhhh.
Loving Patreon guys!
About time!...some real hip hop to review!
Black Thought has been dropping 🔥 since the early 90's and is always swinging verbal swords
Black Thought is an amazing artist, thanks for breaking this one down guys, it was a particularly great listen
So many of these bars you all have schooled me on in the comments.
I already thought this was an Epic track. Thought is a Renaissance man genius MC. All of the cliches aside this track is a phenomenal MASTERPIECE.
Here's some good song to react
BLUES
1. Phillip sayce- as the years goes passing by
2. Marcus King- Rita is gone/plant your corn early
3. Muddy waters- black night
POP
1. Jeremy passion & Tory Kelly- brokenhearted
2. Travis Garland- Dangerous woman
3. Christian cuevas- Yesterday
JAZZ
1. Nathan Hartono- My first, my last, my everything
i'll recommend more if you pick one of these :)
About 6 months ago, was at the intersection of State and Broad streets in downtown Trenton, Sunday morning, broke as hell from bad decisions the night before, chasing a free meal at the church down the street, and i passed a group of homeless people at the small park across from the dunkin donuts, and somebody had this rockin on a boombox, and this old black dude that looked like he had been through the apocalypse, dressed in army surplus clothes, was up against the wall rockin his head to every verse. This shit is certified soul music, if you at the level to accept it
Don't miss the fact that Cast Away is also a movie that features Tom Hanks as a survivor stranded on a deserted island. Pen too nice!
The only channel I like videos before the intro is even over lol
love the roots, best hip hop group ive ever seen live, amazing music abilities, i love hip hop, ima true head, and there too many to name here, but i have been let down by so many live performances from hip hop shows...
Never heard of Black Thought before, this track is pretty sick.
Nuggets, Boi never heard of The Roots?
I've heard the name but that's about it, to be honest. I am mainly a metal/progressive fan, and it was George and Ryan's metal reactions that brought me to this channel initially. As a teen I thought metal was the only real music haha, so my knowledge of hip-hop and rap is limited. But Lost in Vegas has introduced me to a lot of hip-hop and rap, and also just how good hip-hop and rap can be. They've also shown me how to listen to it, which has made a big difference to my enjoyment of it.
So from my quick Wikipedia search, Black Thought is a member of The Roots. Do you have any recommendations from The Roots? I'm always keen to listen to new music.
As a fellow metal fan, who is also a Roots fan, start with Phrenology, then maybe Things Fall Apart. www.allmusic.com/artist/the-roots-mn0000415906/discography
Check out the other reaction Lost in Vegas have done on Black Thought, his HOT97 freestyle.
Cheers for the suggestions guys, I'll look into them.
He Did So Much In Five Songs with This Project Maaaan Straight Spittin' at it's Best. I Wonder Which Producer Of The Soul Council He'll Collaborate With On Vol.2 Here's Hoping Nottz Or DJ Hi-Tek Is in the Books....Much Props on This Review... I'd Like to Hear you Guys do a Review On The Roots "UNIverse At War" Featuring Common....
"Casualties I seen em like the French Foreign Legion" - The FFL is a branch of the French military open to foreigners which is known for always being ready to be sent into combat zones all over the globe. They are seen as expendable and if you survive for 3 years you get to apply to become a French citizen.
I listened to questlove speak on thoughts perfected timing and breath control while explaining how he wrote "it aint fair" in an hour after quest had struggled with writers for 3 days. An amazing piece of work from an amazing professional.
Black Thought is fire, first heard him through listening to Black Star. One of the Legends!
They should do some Black star reactions.
Wow! Didn’t know they still made hip hop like this. Phenomenal
9th and Black on a different level. I loved this project. Thank you for doing a reaction to this song. Awesome as always!
thats why i always had an affinity to thought. hes so all rounded and is in every intelligent persons top 5. best in the game rn hands down
Loving it. Looking forward to a review of the whole album 😙😉
Black Thought is one of the most underrated mainstream rappers out there. He gets a lot of respect when he's brought up, but even a lot of hip hop heads forget about him when mentioning the best MCs of all time. He may not be THE greatest rapper of all time, but he's close and he is my favorite.
Here's a couple other rock/metal songs I think you guys might like:
Down - "Stone the Crow" - based on previous videos, I think Ryan and George would like this; plus, Phil Anselmo has one of the most versatile voices in rock
Infectious Grooves - "Violent and Funky" - funk-metal with a BADASS bassline and killer groove
Caligula's Horse - "Rust" - an accessible, if not outright catchy, prog-metal track that I think you guys might dig, especially the "heavy" part
He should be on any top emcee list and in every discussion of greats.
Steve Martin black thought is in my top 5. Always been
The greatest reaction channel reviewing one of the greatest hip hop artists ever... what more can you wish for??
Vampire in the interview is a reference to a movie Brad Pitt acted called Vampire in the interview brilliant movie
Ayy some black thought again. Nice vid
Why am I up?😴. Oh I know why, good shit like this
This is one of my favorite songs from Black thought. I told Cuzo of mine discussing rap and I told him Em is great but black thought is better..
I love the substance and layers that black thoughts gives in versus and his flow strings it together .
One another note black thoughts fav rapper is Kool G rap and u can hear the influence . Love the video by the way.
There are your top 5 MCs, and then there are the Gods who hover above them at all times. The way Black Thought tip-toes through history and collapses space and time in his rhymes is unreal. For instance, he ended one bar with the death of Franz Ferdinand whom he references for the effect of creating a time lapse. The purpose of this was to emphasize how deeply woven both murder and death are into the fabric of the American system. And this reference is proceeded with two other quick historical and cultural references as time posts throughout history. Here's a breakdown:
I heard that murder ran this vast, deserted land/(the U.S. since its inception in 1776, and the entire period of colonization preceding 1776 are filled with war, murder, and death. All the time after 1776 have been filled with murder, war, and death. Needless to say, since 1492 murder runs this land.)
Since back when Burning Man was Blacks in Birmingham (Burning Man is a present day festival for "radical free expression." In essence, white people pay hundreds and thousands of dollars to come together in a Nevada desert to burn a wooden man. The Birmingham that Black Thought references is presumed to be "Bombingham" Alabama. It was called this from 1945-1965 as more than 50 sticks of dynamite were ignited against Black people in that time. The most notable assault was the 16th street Baptist Church bombing where four little girls were killed. What's particularly interesting in this connection is that in both instances, white people are gathering to set things on fire. What's sad is that the wooden "Burning Man" probably gets more empathy.)
Before the presidential election diversion scam (pick an election 🙄)
Matter fact, before they clapped Franz Ferdinand (in 1914, this is the event that started WWI. And then the next line goes: )
You gossip on Jay and Beyonce/
Or Kim and Kanye/
"Well keep rising to the top," what my mind say
In a matter of a few bars, we travel through a few hundred years of history and he is so laser focused on painting a picture that he'll use entire historic events to make the picture clear. And these weren't even the best bars in the song!
All this goes to say that Black Thought is undoubtedly amongst the Gods with this one 🙌🏿.
Add On: *Sam Christian* who Black Thought mentions is an infamous member of the Black Mafia in Philadelphia. "Jamaica Funk, got get into wha--..." is a reference to Tom Browne's Jamaica Funk hit song from 1980. BT also made reference to Interview With The Vampire film speaking on "vampire interview..." . Dense indeed.
Great reaction. The only thing you guys didn’t touch on is his rhyme schemes and his ability to rhyme multi syllables in every bar. That in itself is unbelievable but add the depth of each lyric and the way he connects metaphors... he’s an alien
I remember when u guys started. Always knew you'd eventually reach the masses. Hope u reach million subscribers. Much love
as much as I like heavy metal ( 70 s to 80s) I have learned to appreciate the style and art of those such as Tupac and Snoop and such...and now I'm going to add Black Thought to my playlist...but ,more importantly to my respect and spiritual thoughtfulness. I still look to Tupac in so many ways and even though I know Lost in Vegas knows Tupac would love to know your thoughts....but just wanted to thank Lost In Vegas for revealing many different view points and continue to look forward to further progression on yours and My own intellectual and spirtitual growth. I wish you all to stay blessed and stay well.
I've just had an idea so crazy, it's brilliant! Hear me out - you guys should do a reaction video to *Between The Buried And Me*
Would be a mad fun pisser!
I think that when it simply comes to ability at rapping, nobody has ever been better than Thought. He is gifted.
I recommend an acapella freestyle by Black Thought for an event by Harvard Innovation Lab called The Other Side Speaker Series. From a fellow Black Thought fan to another, you have to watch it. He said a lot of important things in it.
Also if yall doing black thought I STILL WANT MY LUPE FIASCO MURAL REACTION!! lol.
This Black Thought & 9th EP is just SO good!
Standout track for me is “making a Murderer”
Tariq is in his own class. There needs to be no comparison. The album is dope and I listen to it every day!
Awesome reaction! You two are hands down my favorite channel on RUclips. Been following you guys a long while now. Much love from Chicago.
On another note, you guys should check out Arsonal-If I was Drake. Jaw dropping track.
I promise you won’t be disappointed.
The part about “no man is an island, but I’m a cast away. That’s a metaphor for the movie Cast Away starring Tom Hanks who was stranded on an island.
No man is an island and cast away is also tied to cast away the movie by Tom hanks
Much love lost in Vegas
I know you guys have said you're not much into seeing bands live. But you absolutely must catch a Roots concert. The Best.
I think it's also called stream of thought because in a meta way its flowing from him, Black Thought
*YOU 2 GUYZ ARE AMAZING*. *I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU 2 ARE THE ONES GIVING REACTIONS TO HIP-HOP FANS BECAUSE YOU SPEAK WITH A SUBSTANCE & DEPTH THAT IZ UNMATCHED OR UNSURPASSED BY ANY*. *MOST PEOPLE THAT DO *UNBIASED REACTIONS* ARE JUST SO UNIFORMED AND JUST GODDAM NON KNOWLEDGE ASS HAVING FOOLS*. *I LOVE YOU GUYZ 2 DEF, AND I'M SO GLAD I HAPPENED TO STUMBLE UPON YOU 2 A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR AGO*. Also "burning man" is a music festival
Talib Akil Bey it wasn't in reference to the music festival. Smh
@@nysquash Yes it was.
Yep
