    Lupe references the Divine Comedy - Dante’s journey through Hell to find absolution in the light. This allusion is carried forward in his reference to “suicide inside”; Dante began his journey into the inferno after considering his own suicide.
    Later, Lupe talks about breaking walls down and lighting the way for those to follow; this, again, is a reference to Dante, as Dante describes Virgil in a similar way:
    (From Purgatorio, canto 22, lines 67-69)
    “‘You were as one who goes by night, carrying / the light behind him - it is no help to him, / but instructs all who follow -‘“

    At 16:00 Lupe recites in Arabic chapter 114 from the Quran called “Al Nas” which means “Mankind” and its translation is:
    قل أعوذ برب الناس
    Say thou: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind
    ملك الناس
    The King of mankind
    إله الناس
    The God of mankind
    من شر الوسواس الخناس
    From the the evil of the retreating whisperer
    الذي يوسوس في صدور الناس
    Who whispers in the hearts of mankind
    من الجنة و الناس
    From the jinn and mankind

      Lupe recited this Quran chapter called “Al Nas” while naming his track “King Nas” which means “The King of Mankind” which is the second verse from Al Nas chapter. And by that he’s referring to God.
      And you kind of touched on this when you said when are we going to bring God back to the ghetto?

      I wouldn't say he is slept on. Everybody knows Lupe is one of the greatest lyricists. He also had some hits back in the day. I don't think anybody underrated Lupe. His biggest problem is that he is not targeting the mainstream with his sound and that his lyrics are too complex for the casual hip hop listener.

    • @ChengX95
      @ChengX95 6 лет назад +10

      That’s why he’s slept on though. He’s such a tactful and crafty lyricist that he loses the majority of the public who just want a simple bop. And I think he wouldn’t want to simplify his lyrics to appease the masses because that would just take away from his intents in regards to social progression/ascension.

    Lupe is a serious contender for Album of the Year with this piece. His writing is as poetic, as literary as ever. It's a testament to his more enlightened and aesthetically superior art of writing. It's beyond rap, hip-hop or music itself. His prose...his prose is literally (literally) self-sufficient. He has no need for innuendos or triple entendres or cheap shots. Not that he is unable to go THERE but because he has long decided to trail his own path and be The Original Artist, a Prophet, a Poet, a Great Man. Art of this caliber brings tears to the eyes of men and women alike. As it should. Beautiful...

      Yeah, I think so too. I think he is referring to becoming a rapper. There are plenty of people who want to become rappers and to shine from the rest, you need to have a unique sound. And to find that sound is hard with all of the struggles.

    • @TheReck12
      @TheReck12 2 года назад

      @@jessetherainbowrabbit9870 It could also be referring to Chicago in general, in the poem Dante sees the different levels of hell the same way Lupe explains the different things happening in the ghetto. Almost like he's guiding the listener or in this case his nephews. And "took away from my ascension" refers to both his environment stunting his growth, his career, and back to the divine comedy allegory he was still stuck in "hell"

    • @w.4465

      More specifically, it praises God's domain over mankind and asks for refuge from the devil that whispers temptation and withdraws the remembrance of God from people's hearts and possibly those whispering temptations of jinns and mankind. (And God knows best, I tried to the best of my abilities to summarise the chapter here). It's commonly recited by Muslims with another chapter as an invocation against all manners of evil and misfortune.
      So if you think about it in the context of the song, after talking to his nephews and giving them advice on the various pitfalls and realities that they're going to face in their journey towards manhood, he's recites the chapter as if almost to pray for their protection against the whispering temptations of the devil, jinns and of people they're going to face, which is very heartwarming.

    I mean if he came out when Kendrick or Cole did, he’d be appreciated so much more. He was woke, lyrical and conceptual before anyone else. But his name is already slept on, it’s hard to get back out from that after his label took his mainstream prime away when he could have established this.
    I doubt he cares because he doesn’t have to cater to anyone but his core fans who are attune to his layers, his concepts and understands that they need to dissect every bar to see the pictures/murals he is painting.
    To me he is on that alien level that very few MC’s reach, but he’s slept on in comparison to his peers.

    Debuted this live mixed with a freestyle during the Sway jam session (part 2) for the grannies which you guys unusually slept on! The whole session is 🔥 Oswin, Fred the Godson, Lupe, Rapsody, Chris Rivers - still worth a visit.
    But great reaction, love you guys, love this album from Lupe.
    Big international love from Liverpool UK - Merry Christmas!

    Wow that’s crazy how you mentioned the corny reference about Soccer. I was so into basketball and one day making it to the NBA, and never thought about taking soccer seriously, especially since I was good at it. And now I look at myself and see that I’m not in the NBA and was not even close to playing college basketball and now I ask myself, why didn’t I play fucking soccer lol. You live and you learn and anything corny can actually make your life better in that aspect. Good point fellas!

      So true. Soccer 'Fútbol' players are some of the highest paid athletes in world. If one has the potential to join a league, there's some serious money to be made. Baseball is another one. It's so weird how soccer is only seen as lame in America but its everything to the rest of the world.

    The title itself is a triple entendre:
    1.The first and obvious is a reference to Nas, Nasir Jones, to whom Lupe has shown and expressed deep affection and respect. Lupe has stated multiple times that Nas is his favorite rapper.
    2. The second be it a a reference to his two nephews, King and Nas. Nas, I believe, is heard at the end of the song playing around around with his uncle Lupe.
    3. The third, and probably the one around which the whole song rotates, is a play on the Arabic word (الناس) which reads An' Nas, or Nas, and it stands for mankind, or human beings. At the end, Lupe recites the Quranic chapter of (الناس) that Muslims recite to repent and ask forgiveness from the King of Mankind=King Nas=God. In fact, the second verse of the chapter refers to the king of mankind. And this third reference is the most relevant to the meaning of the song, in which Lupe talks about his trials and tribulations and how he was/is constantly challenged by his demons (Drugs, lust for fame, money etc.). And the Quranic Chapter itself is a form of asking God (The king of Mankind=King (of) Nas) for guidance and protection from the evils of this world.
    That's just my two piece! And fyi, Lupe is my favorite rapper and has a constant spot in my top 3, along with Black Thought and Andre 3000.

  • @trncjz
    @trncjz 6 лет назад +1

    1st verse = illmatic, lifes a bitch, it aint hard to tell, ny state of mind(chi state of mind)
    2nd verse = it was written , the message, black girl lost, street dreams, i gave you power (being the streets)
    3rd verse = stillmatic as mentioned, 2nd childhood, every ghetto, what goes around, youre da man

    YESS!! Albums crazy, one of my fav songs of it. I have so much I want to suggest! But I'll narrow it down to 3. 1 - Did U ever think by Flatbush zombies and a few others from beast coast. Next two aren't rap but are just Vibin, so 2 - How to fly - sticky fingers 3 - summertime magic/feels like summer by childish gambino. Even if you don't react they're all some great tunes to enjoy. Thanks for doing what you're doing. One of my favourite channels on RUclips. 🔥🔥🙏🙏

    Hey guys, can't get enough of your channel. It's one of a handful that I have taken the laughably easy step and subscribed to. I just cant be bothered with most channels but your honesty and openness to anything new is respectable and something to be supported.
    All that said, as a guy that grew up as a metalhead and became a dirty hippy after living in the mountains for years I would love to here you react to some Grateful Dead or some other jam band not called Phish. Something classic but not popular like Estimated Prophet or from my current favorite band " The String Cheese Incident" (song: Texas or Little Feet). If you finally decide to wonder into these territories i would suggest a live song as these bands always sound better on stage than they do in the studio.
    I've also fallen in love with funk. If 6th grade me only knew playing a trumpet could be so badd ass. Bands like Lettuce (Do It Like You Do) or The Motet (Nemesis) are a bit more obscure outside certain circles and are fucking awesome. Again live performances are always better than studio tracks for these guys.
