Industry Rap definitely is but veterans like Black Thought with Life experience, intellect, Wisdom, vocabulary mastery and Knowledge. They did not want to say it so I will .... He is the Best Lyricist I ever heard and that is the "Best Free Style Ever" and will be until someone comes along and do better!!! I don't see it happening ....Period!!!
THe puppet masters want it a young and stupid dumbed down game. Buying all the radio stations and creating universal play lists of the mumble trash for the last 8-9 years nationwide. The ignorant, drug use, sexist culture is rewarded. Intellect is not respected by the puppet masters. The young cats will sell their souls for any buck and fame. This is where we are today unfortunately. And the majority of them today have no talent. They cannot rap or rhyme. Its not Hip HOP. It is Shit Hop.
OverlorBeats You should of heard the The Roots live show on WNYU 89.1 for the album release of Illadelph Halflife in 1996. That was probably one of the greatest Underground Hip-Hop shows ever recorded. I wished I still had my cassette tape from that day.
George your acumen was shining in this video man. To breakdown obscure references like that on the fly was crazy. Like the Only reason why I got that Henrietta Lacks line is because I literally just read the book this past semester. You seem to be well versed in a lot of things. Just wanted to highlight that because I thought that was dope.
Zgs Freaky yeah I know. But this freestyle is a completely different monster. Like a Griot being an African poet. Little things like that made me make that comment. I knew what a Fleur De Lis looked like but I didn’t know the history behind it. Just commending a smart dude.
Marc Completely agree - knowing griot, Freakonomics, Kissinger, Lacks, white flag double entendre, and some others were impressive, some of which I’ve learned and forgotten, and for him to pull them out of his pocket really needs to be valued. Even though he missed Fleur de Lis, which was from 3 musketeers, I missed it as well
Ulysse I hear ya, I'm not disagreeing, I just realized it from musketeers when someone else said it. I guess he did get it but didn't realize that "The fleur-de-lis is a royal symbol in most cases, but when tattooed on flesh, it is a standard mark for criminals, and prostitutes." (I copy and pasted the quotes)
Like, see it as a crime scene (i'm referencing to his last bar). You come there, you see the fingerprints and blood splatters, you know what has happened (roughly), but you still have to be the forensic to put ALL the pieces together. Just like the freestyle, you hear some of the bars and you catch the meaning, but not all the bars. You have to dig deep to understand all the references etc.
I thought the "gilded cage" reference was about his gig on Jimmy Fallon living the easy life. He chose to go that route and barb wired his wrist to remember where he came from and to give back.
I think it’s both. He is in a gilded cage because he “made it” but now he has to play the respectability politics game. He’s not truly free if he’s in America’s living room during prime time.
kafa is a place in Ethiopia which is believed to be the origin of coffee. black thought is a rapping encyclopedia #legend y'all did a great break down too cheers!
I’ve watched about 8 different reactions to this and your breakdown and analysis is the best I’ve seen!! Thank god for your level of intelligence to catch bars that are flying over cats heads!!
Greatest freestyle of all time with the greatest breakdown of all time. Props! Surprised more people didn’t react to this free, it’s just insane and it was trending for a while too
The "criminal records like record sales"/"Henrietta Lacks" line was a triple entendre: perpetually in Cells (prison), perpetually up in sales (records), perpetually up in cells (immortal cancer cells)
Y’all missed something so crucial in the OGs and Young Lions line, when he says amalgamism and the algorithm. He literally references the previous line, and states that I’ve combined the two generations and the secret to that is a mathematical formula that I’ve mastered.
34:51 - That Nat Turner \ Hamlet line was some next-level existentialist Shakespearean stuff......Bars son BARS!!!!....thanks BlackThought for not dumbing it down.
listen i'm from philly and I cant help but consider black thought #1 on my list...I know biggie and tupac have earned their spots but its time for black thought to get his respek
It was way Passed time for Black Thought to gain more respect. He's been respected by real heads, but he doesnt get mentioned in GOAT conversations often enough. Been rapping Longer than Biggie and Tupac, and has as many or more classic albums.
Biggie and Pac are immortalized because they were both murdered in their prime. They were both great, they did earn their spots. Thought is #1 though for me though and likely always will be, he can't be compared to anyone, he's just the best.
Great breakdown of the freestyle. Just to add, “taxes, death, and trouble,” is from Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man” song released in 1972. There are so many references in the freestyle representing Black life and history. Thanks for the analysis.
Also "you heard the line everybody plays the fool, well I be the exception to the rule" is referencing the Main Ingredient song "Everybody Plays the Fool". This is a great analysis though, the best one I've watched.
Everything about this video screams “quality content”. Black Thought SPAZZED out and y’all delivered a phenomenal take and breakdown of the lyrics. #Subbed
The cautionary line about going from "bars filled with rage" to "prime-time television in your gilded cage": I gotta think that's also about the Roots' Fallon gig, and the risk of losing one's edge. (apologies if this is a repeat observation, I haven't scrolled through the whole comments section) You guys do great, great work!
Clay Hopkins Yo Lost In Vegas homies y’all DO need to start a podcast... I know you do this for fun but you could get some SERIOUS clout with a podcast
I no longer read "professional" reviews. I watch guys like you that can break down this shit brilliantly. And you guys can show true love for the Rap/Hip-Hop crew and the Metal crew at the same time. Blessings to you both, this is one of the best channels on YT.
The War & Peace line alludes to how many pages he has in his passport from traveling. War & Peace is 1,225 pages long and the thickness of an encyclopedia lol!
Might be a stretch on my part but I also thought he may be saying his passport has been to so many places that he’s been near war-induced & peaceful lands along the way. Either way super 🔥 🔥
I'm glad I saw this. funny enough all the stop and go helped me hear a few lines I missed the first view. lots of double entendres in some of these bars. I also noticed but didn't realize how much literature this man speaks on. Some of the historical references I completely missed. Remember the days when rapers prided themselves on their education. Honestly thank you for this video.
I love how you cats broke down the lyrics of this freestyle! This freestyle needed to be dissected because the lyrics are so intricate and powerful. Much love to the both of you for listening to the requests of your subscribers and actually taking the time to put this videos out. I really wanted to see your perspective on this incredible freestyle and you cats did a great job! God Bless ya'll and Merry Christmas!
Just imagine if we could get Black Thoughts to watch your all’s reaction and him react to what you all thought the meanings of the lines were. That would be legendary.
Thank you guys for you effort that was legendary. the only channel that would drop a 44min reaction. you can see it's out of love for this culture we appreciate it
The roots are probably one of the most talented bands on the planet. Not because they hit you with crazy time signatures and shredding guitars, but because they can literally play anything at any time with almost no prep time ON TOP of putting out amazing original music. Black Thought is sweet and can slice a mic. You are right, Black Thought is very under rated and under appreciated and has been for YEARS.
I watched this gentleman this morning and my mind was completely blown. This was so damned deep and insightful. He hit every single note of modern societies issues. I also just watched the Netflix original "Bright". The message that movie portrays is fantastic. We all live on this planet. To hell with color and nationality! Let's live for one another and support each other. It takes a real human to be human. Love everyone. Open your minds. Be "FREE THINKERS" for real!
Yo, I have to thank y'all for this one right here. I never quite understood black thought when he rhymed, but I did respect him as an MC. It was not until you broke this freestyle down that I now understand how hot this dude is. A lot of the meaning of certain words in his Rhymes I did not understand. So of course I couldn't quite follow him, but again, you broke it down and brought it to light. And help me understand why a lot of people say black thought is one of the hottest MCS around. I now see him in a whole different light. Thanks for opening my eyes.
I think the "War and Peace" line was referring to his passport being stamped so much that it resembles a really thick book. There's a running joke that War and Peace is one of the longest books you could ever read. lol
It took me three weeks to read "War and Peace" so it means his passport only has three weeks worth of traveling ... LOL ... just kidding ... he's referencing how many pages are in his passport ...
Yeah 1200 pages, only made half myself, need to finish! I'd agree that it relates to the stamps within, the content, reflecting how well travelled and cultured he is, my bro was super proud filling one, takes some doing. Page count is the same in all passports, filling em is an achievement!
“It’s like a Sharia Law on my Cherie Amor”...isn’t he saying fake, ignorant rappers are so widely accepted (revered) that their whack style is becoming law on his “Charie Amore”, which means his “dearest Love”, Rap😮❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ RUclips: LoveLaRieXO💕
Nah thats not it. what he meant was its like something real hard and caustic like Sharia law vs something real delicate like The Stevie wonder joint "My Cherie Amour"
Respect! Superlative analysis; you guys are dope. Picked up a subscriber here. Note on the "coffee in Kaffa" line; Kaffa is an old name for a region in Africa (modern Ethiopia, I believe) where coffee is believed to have originated.
Btw maybe as an idea for a serie you could do a throwback thursday where you expose an 80's, 90's hip hop song(s) the all the free thinkers.....that way some of the younger people get to experience some of the great music out of that era....scarface,Pun,PimpC,BunB etc... Would love to see this in the future..
The Fleur de lis is the saints symbol, ⚜️. It was also used as a symbol to brand runaway slaves. That’s what he meant by saying the trying to label him a runaway and grind him with it
I had to check this out just because I wanted to see what's going to take y'all 45 min to react to. Now I know. I watched the whole thing. There was a lot there to break down. Good job at the dissection, inspection, and relevance of the material. It seems most comments are 1) react to (......), 2) y'all should've done Loaded Lux, 3) Black Thought flow and length of time made this freestyle epic. (Which it was EPIC!) What's not being commented on is the truth spoke. ONE (not the only) recurring theme he addressed is that we won't elevate ourselves collectively when individually we relish in foolishness. The foolishness of promoting garbage. Whether the garbage is music, thought, talk, actions, desires, etc. Is this movement we're on (individually) into our own gilded cage or is it into our own personal enlightenment?
for those of y'all who wonder whether the freestyle was pre-written or to what extent it may have been. first of all, think about how likely it is to completely remember a 10 min. rap you don't rehearse like yer bands regular songs, done fluently to a beat you haven't heard beforehand... so i recall asking a german rapper once how you come up with all this stuff in an instant. he answered by asking back how i do it on guitar (freestyling on the guitar is called improvisation) and i told him you internalise phrases and riffs, i.e. add them to your own repertoire, by practising a lot and listen to other solos/improvs for inspiration. he replied 'well that's pretty much how you learn to freestyle, after enough time of doing it, you acquire a set of figures of speech you can fire off at any moment and the rest you construct around that on the spot'
for a rapper at black thoughts level memerizing a 10 min written and then performing it to one of the most iconic beats isnt a crazy thing. much more likely than something this complex and long being totally off the dome. still insanely impressive and one of my favorite raps ive ever heard, especially considering the perfect lyricism and the breath control, but very likely not off the dome
I rap I am not great but I can freestyle pretty well. A good friend of mine and a lot of people I know are very good. Coming off the top isn't really that hard but you can always tell and no matter what you are always gonna say things you have wrote or said before. Also if you are really coming off the top you will have some set up lines especially if you go for 10 mins. This was definitely a written to some degree in fact some lines are in some of his songs in some capacity. With that said this is far more impressive than any freestyle. The reason it is so impressive is because I think he was just kinda going with lines he might have had arranged for something like this. Which idgaf who you are sputting for 10 mins straight on demand and never messing up at all and delivering the whole thing super on point is just unbelievable. Ask any Mc too freestyling isn't really that difficult especially if people understand it is off the top because you are gonna fall off. However writing is so much more difficult. I can freestyle all day but I can't write for shit. You could give me a lifetime and I could never write something like this and do it at anytime. So basically these lines are all pre written at some point that he probably just came in and started spitting and mixed it up with some freestyling as well. The dude is one of the best ever! Even if he wrote all of this and rehearsed it a 1000 times beforehand it is still super impressive.
Black Thought is only underrated by those that claim to know hip hop and yet they don't. He is easily in any Hip Hop heads Top Ten GOAT MC LIST, but is in my Top Five GOAT as Rakim, KRS, Kool G and Kane set the bar, whilst BT, Esco and the Sosa's help maintain the core of Hip Hop
Thank you guys so much. This is kind of outta left field but I’ve been going through some serious depression (breakup). When I couldn’t listen to music I listened to you guys. Your friendship is awesome and the way you guys delve into the music with passion and earnest have helped me through so much these past months. On the days were I felt like I couldn’t keep going I’d just check out one of your videos. What started out as conversation in the background to help block out pain has evolved into discovering new music that has brought happiness back to my life. George, Ryan, please keep doin your thing and know you’ve got big love in NC👍
When he said "I'll acknowledge the original people not Oliver,he is saying even in the prior line that there are great rappers being looked over.Oliver Peoples is a eyewear designer
That was insane. I have to go watch the actual video. That was crazy. I've never seen anything like that before so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Gotta go watch it again. sheeeiiitttt!!!
No, thank you guys for opening my mind to different shit. I'm not subscribed that long but in all fairness to you guys, as a closed minded metal head, I've heard sheeeiit I've never heard before and I seriously like it. So total respect to you guys for that. Sincerely, thanks guys. Really appreciate it. Respect big time!
This video is everything I've been looking for for the past week. I've listened to this freestyle probably around 50 times in completion and still you guys were able to fill in so many gaps and connect so many dots for me. Appreciate the time and insight.
"It's like Sharia Law on my cherie amour". I interpreted it differently. Sharia law is viewed as oppressive to women by the west. His cherie amour or his beloved is rap/hip hop. The new generation of rappers aren't treating his woman (rap) right.
After I first heard the Funk Flex Freestyle (last month) that Black Thought spat greatness on, I repeated it maybe 30 times a day for many days. That's how impeccable his lyricism is. I knew about BT years before he rapped this Funk Flex freestyle. As a young kid and adolescent, I was always listening to the lyrical greats in my crib. That's how I got started with poetry 10 years ago when I was 12. I have been writing ever since that age as a poet. I love Pun, L, Tech N9ne, Fab, Ka, GZA, Inspectah Deck, Talib Kweli, Twista, Game, and more. Y'all are great RUclipsrs. I love the young rappers who are talented too. Y'all analyze bars well and proficiently. Keep up the good work Gods. I will follow y'all on the gram. I will shout y'all out too. I post poems on my page. Feel free to check them out. By the way, I would like for y'all to respond to Ken and Ryu Massacre by King Iso and Twisted Insane. @Lost In Vegas
Young lions proud (Pride) to listen.. I first thought ( no pun inteneded lol) he was wordplaying Lion and Pride but even he wasn't I think he wanted my mind to travel there.. WOW
Stay Up I was just thinking he had to be. OG( older lion like mufasa, young lion like simba) both of the same tribe who can respect his lyricism. He really blacked out on this
I APPRECIATE THIS SO MUCH! Y’all explained this so good because the first time i heard it, it went over my head i didn’t quite understand it but now i really understand what he’s saying. Thank you, this video didn’t even feel like it was 44 minutes long i really enjoyed this.
I appreciate the analysis. This was great. Also, when he said he was having visions like Nat Turner, Nat Turner was also said to have visions. Black Thought also had a freestyle on Sway with Method Man that he destroyed. I'm lad this blew up. Nice way to end the year.
Fleur de lis is a brand that was used to mark slaves, runaway slaves and troublemakers...it is the same symbol now used by the New Orleans Saints. That is what Thought was talking about.
"They tried to capture me and brand me on the cheek With a fleur-de-lis" referring to runaway slaves who were re-captured, subjected to punishment and afterwards were branded with the sign of the fleur-de-lis (mainly in Louisiana). In terms, everyone would know of their actions and punishment also, if they were to be sold or traded other slave masters or slavers would know. And now people brand (tattoo) themselves happily with the symbol.
“My Passport page‘s is like War and Peace”He’s talking about the thickness… Meaning he went to so many countries. His passport is just as thick as the novel War and Peace.
Nothin but the upmost respect for this channel, the fact you didn’t watch it just to react is amazing I’ve wanted to see your live thoughts on this for a while keep up the work and never lose your integrity and plz more uk content in the future our rap scene has a lot of slick writers I know you guys like that’s stuff 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I hope this video reaches hundreds of thousands of views because I don't know of anyone who has said so much that needs to be said in 10 minutes. I probably wouldn't have been exposed to this were it not for this channel. You guys broke down so much of that with so much knowledge, and thank you because there are references in there that I didn't get, that were so deep and not getting it would be a shame. There is so much I can say but somehow I feel speechless. Ryan I don't think I will ever not smile when something gets a "golly!" from you. George just props dude..the knowledge you shared there on the fly was crazy. Happy Holidays guys! Here's to 200 thousand subscribers to ring in the new year!!! And yes I watched the whole 45 mins, if ever you guys have to go that long on a video again just know it's appreciated.
I'm impressed that you cats knew most of the analogies being used. It speaks to your intelligence as well....felt like I was back in school learning all over again!
I absolutely hate reaction videos. this isnt a reaction video its a class. I love that you broke down everything down quite eloquently. I bumped into this trying to find other MC's reactions or the talking about it. The way you dig into was fuckin dope. Thank you! back to listening
We appreciate all of you! Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁🎁

A "griot" is a keeper of african traditions who passes them down orally and not written. Great review by the way.
LiveJ5 Yes! I’m originally from East Africa(Sudan) I know exactly what you’re referring to.
@@darkcontinentschild2962 My family is from central Africa and we too have griots. In fact griots are thought to be the first rappers.
The griot (the story teller) that makes you want to peacock (put your hands up) your arms. I'm glad someone else caught that line
I tbougjt he meant Gre-At as in A Great...but be used the letters to sound how they should lol.but yeah Griot in that sense makes sense as well
LiveJ5 kinda like Mohamed ?

Lol. Thanks my man!
And THATS~~》REAL!
i agree, y'all smart
I would agree with this statement. Very entertaining
This is a great idea.
To this day. I still use this track to heat my house in winter.
nice.
Black Thought has never spit a wack verse. Ever. Period.

Insane that this freestyle is still a pinnacle after almost 3yrs. 🔥
It's Too Packed.
Too Heavy.
Going on 5 years.
That freestyle is a super massive black hole. It's nearly beyond comprehension.
@@abasis.baruti9819I tore through the fabric of space with this one! Next dimension shit
I thought the "gilded cage" reference was about his gig on Jimmy Fallon living the easy life. He chose to go that route and barb wired his wrist to remember where he came from and to give back.
Deven Brown
Great observation!
You guys should really consider doing a radio show or something. I'd listen to that every day honestly you guys are so entertaining and knowledgeable.
Realist comment I've read on this channel... If they did forreal itd do numbers thas fsho
I’ve watched about 8 different reactions to this and your breakdown and analysis is the best I’ve seen!! Thank god for your level of intelligence to catch bars that are flying over cats heads!!
True that they are my favorite always spot on
That "young lions equally proud to listen" bar also has a play on words. A pride is a pack of lions. Fire!
Whoa!
To this day, this is still the best breakdown of a freestyle on RUclips.
Absolutely
2023 still
even if someone can top it. He'll be right back on sway.
Greatest freestyle of all time with the greatest breakdown of all time. Props! Surprised more people didn’t react to this free, it’s just insane and it was trending for a while too
Thanks bro!
The "criminal records like record sales"/"Henrietta Lacks" line was a triple entendre: perpetually in Cells (prison), perpetually up in sales (records), perpetually up in cells (immortal cancer cells)
Good catch!

Y’all missed something so crucial in the OGs and Young Lions line, when he says amalgamism and the algorithm. He literally references the previous line, and states that I’ve combined the two generations and the secret to that is a mathematical formula that I’ve mastered.
thank you, thought I was the only one that caught that.. masterpiece

Thought is #1 though for me though and likely always will be, he can't be compared to anyone, he's just the best.
corey dooley sorry Pac didn’t have bars he had a few songs and hooks can’t even compare
Black Thought left a piece of himself in there that day.

Holy shit so many bars went over my head....I was in a trance listening to his flow lmao dope video, merry Christmas fellas 🔥
Black Thought is from another planet!

It's a fake reaction
A griot, jali or jeli is a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet and/or musician
That makes it even harder
A Griot is a Village Historian in African culture. Black Thought is that, for real!

2019 and I’m still shocked Black Thought low key dropped the hardest freestyle of all time....
He did it again 🤣
Kaffa is in Ethiopia where Coffee originated from.
We figured it would be Africa. It kind of went with the 'theme' lol. Thanks for the info!
It would be really awesome if you guys started some kind of a hip hop podcast.

James McLaughlin same
Clay Hopkins Yo Lost In Vegas homies y’all DO need to start a podcast...

Either way super 🔥 🔥
they said that lol
@@AJRios12 nah he got it. tolstoy's war and peace is just an infamously dense and lengthy book.
Just imagine if we could get Black Thoughts to watch your all’s reaction and him react to what you all thought the meanings of the lines were. That would be legendary.
Thank you guys for you effort
that was legendary. the only channel that would drop a 44min reaction. you can see it's out of love for this culture

My man! We appreciate your support as always bro!
It's been 5 years, still the hardest freestyle. Appreciate the indepth analysis, Black thought is unparalleled 🔥
"we're not going to breakdown every line"
proceed to beakdown every line
Yo, I have to thank y'all for this one right here. I never quite understood black thought when he rhymed, but I did respect him as an MC. It was not until you broke this freestyle down that I now understand how hot this dude is. A lot of the meaning of certain words in his Rhymes I did not understand. So of course I couldn't quite follow him, but again, you broke it down and brought it to light. And help me understand why a lot of people say black thought is one of the hottest MCS around. I now see him in a whole different light. Thanks for opening my eyes.
I thought my eyeballs were broken when I saw "44" minutes. It turns out, this really is just a Merry Christmas, lol. Salute ya'll.
I think the "War and Peace" line was referring to his passport being stamped so much that it resembles a really thick book. There's a running joke that War and Peace is one of the longest books you could ever read. lol
You actually made me Google how many pages (and words) are in Atlas Shrugged and War and Peace. Close - but War and Peace is longer. Touché.
Yes some one finally caught the reference as to how thick the book War and Peace is.
“It’s like a Sharia Law on my Cherie Amor”...isn’t he saying fake, ignorant rappers are so widely accepted (revered) that their whack style is becoming law on his “Charie Amore”, which means his “dearest Love”, Rap😮❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
RUclips: LoveLaRieXO💕
LoveLaRieXO Sharia law is Islamic teachings from the Qu'ran. It's very strict. Cherie Amore is referring to his love for hip-hop
Oh yeah how much cb4 can we afford.
Rember the film cb4 the second part makes sense now thanks.
Nah thats not it. what he meant was its like something real hard and caustic like Sharia law vs something real delicate like The Stevie wonder joint "My Cherie Amour"
Al-Maqri Al-Maqri It’s a double entendre, it’s both. That’s why he chose Cherie Amore.
That's deep great info
His Rhymes Might Be Mathematically Sound.
Respect! Superlative analysis; you guys are dope. Picked up a subscriber here. Note on the "coffee in Kaffa" line; Kaffa is an old name for a region in Africa (modern Ethiopia, I believe) where coffee is believed to have originated.
You guys are the best. Definitely need to do some more Black Thought in the future

The Fleur de lis is the saints symbol, ⚜️. It was also used as a symbol to brand runaway slaves. That’s what he meant by saying the trying to label him a runaway and grind him with it
In Alexandre Dumas story of "The Three Musketeers" I believe the Fleur de Lis was also a symbol branded on those marked for death.....
You're 100% correct Sir...!!!

Preach!
I have to have Chuck D in my top 5

"It's like Sharia Law on my cherie amour". I interpreted it differently. Sharia law is viewed as oppressive to women by the west. His cherie amour or his beloved is rap/hip hop. The new generation of rappers aren't treating his woman (rap) right.
After I first heard the Funk Flex Freestyle (last month) that Black Thought spat greatness on, I repeated it maybe 30 times a day for many days. That's how impeccable his lyricism is. By far thus far the best reaction dissection of this godly freestyle! Lot of YTrs review without understanding, so I appreciate yall! Thank you!
"They tried to capture me and brand me on the cheek
With a fleur-de-lis" referring to runaway slaves who were re-captured, subjected to punishment and afterwards were branded with the sign of the fleur-de-lis (mainly in Louisiana). In terms, everyone would know of their actions and punishment also, if they were to be sold or traded other slave masters or slavers would know. And now people brand (tattoo) themselves happily with the symbol.
