Android phones are still more repairable (well less un-repairable) though that will change over time. What they want is for you to get a new device every 3 years, they own it and you only use it. @@ykd0011 Apple sells tons of iPhones because of their ecosystem. Someone also said, newer versions of Android can already check for virus.
I can't emphasize how important sideloading is for android. Sideloading and opensource apk installation are the two biggest reasons why android is still competitive with apple. This is insane, we need the EU to step in again. There is no reason for me to ever use an android if they keep going down this path
I do not like this action but you are getting a bit carried away.
First of all they are not disabling sideloading, they're just giving app developer the option do decide whether they want to allow sideloading of their app, which are not opensource. There are already restrictions on apps on Android as some apps, usually streaming apps, prevent usage of the app or limit it's capabilities if the device is rooted to prevent copyright infringement.
You can still sideload apps if the developer did not prevented it.
I do hope that they'll back down or that someone, like the EU, will do something about it but there is some logic behind that decision, although not enough to make it OK as each of us should have the right to do dumb and unsafe things if the only one that can suffer from that decision is the one making it.

I was travelling to switzerland and wanted to download their transportation apps (and some other useful apps) but it was georestricted on google play. Smartphone virus market share: 5 % Windows phone, 95 % AndroidOS, 0 % iOS
The only alternative is the PinePhone from PINE64. It runs GNU.
Keep in mind that all these are copied from apple.
Apple copies android's best features, while android copies apple's shittiest business strats.
Reason to use iOS:
More consistent and better UI and UX
Stability
Many years of software support
Polished software
Less preinstalled bloat
Sideloading (in Europe)
Preferred by Businesses
Reasons to use Android:
My Samsung can’t install iOS 18.
the consistency in the UX is lost, as soon as the user stops using icloud; and there are an unholy amount of great reasons for not using that garbage
Going the iOS route is handy if you don't want to have vendor and product options too. Buy from Apple, no matter how they treat-you, as it should be!

that's what we got on laptops, and if it doesn't look smooth enough it's nothing that couldn't be fixed with temporal anti-aliasing...
But on the other hand, let's all agree that the hardware design is god awful; with phones that are much too heavy, with two glass panels to break instead of of just one because it's never fragile enough, then it freezes and dies on you somehow with unhelpful death-screens after 2 years; screw apple phones, it went downhill a soon as they introduced non-replaceable batteries, then bigger - ever growing screens despite a worsening ergonomic, and finally a software security tied to the hardware, making phones unrefurbishable in most cases, and screwable remotely just by high-jacking an apple-Id I don't even want use (and despite all the "security", it's obviously very easy to steal an account, as soon as you get your hands on leaked passwords). Also the 2FA is just a bad joke for kids who can't bother to remember a password; if they weren't exposing so much stuff to the internet it wouldn't be a thing. But as of now, we can't travel with an IPhone, swap the sim to an other country-code and you are effectively locked out....
Finally, ads in the appstore and defaulted to google-search? seriously?
Did I say that I didn't like apple anymore?
It's even worse for people like me where many apps aren't available in my country in the play store and I have to look 4 them elsewhere
It's a shame that Windows phone isn't still around. It would be nice to have a other option.
agreed. as an iPhone user, I liked the design of the windows phone. It was pretty unique. too bad it was stomped out of existence thanks to android.

Android meant to be more open than iOS is one of the reasons it has a BIGGER Marketshare worldwide.
We have a *Du-opoly* when it comes to smart phone OS.
FOSS full Linux needs to be supported instead of just two giant corporations owning everything.
NOOOO WAY! This is VERY VERY VEERY important for Android! WUUUT!

Apple: guess what guys, you wanted us to be like Android, and now that they are removing sideloading we are now adding it! And not to the EU, it’s gonna be for everyone everywhere!
If Google continues on this path then it's over for Android.
No, it's over for us. Google and apple will be just fine with the majority of users who don't care about software freedom.

The geolithic era of the Carboniferous period
This is smart, in my opinion. And TECHNICALLY it's up to app developers to implement this API
This is only for apps that are already in the playstore and have enabled this. And only for devices that have the Google Play services. And I assume if you sideload an official apk this wouldn't happen (because the apk signature would be intact). But this would be bad for modded apks
I run Calyx OS on my Android bypassing Google Apps/Permissions. If I am unable to Side Load, then I'll just buy an iPhone and join the Cult.
