  • In today’s video, I compare two of my crop sensor cameras to evaluate the best overall camera for filmmaking and photography. This is a shootout between the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 and the Sony FX30. The GH6 is the current flagship micro-four-thirds sensor camera on the market sporting a 25mp sensor and 6k recording. At the same time, the Sony FX30 is a baby FX3 with a video-centric design and a larger 26mp sensor. I will break this video into ten key sections and declare a winner based on my experience owning both of these great video-first cameras.

    Both are great cameras. I currently own a GH6, and also wanted the FX30 but I think now i'd rather just go full frame and wait for the S5iix or the potential S1H mark ii with PDAF (might have a to wait another year for it though lol).

    Thanks for the comparison, Shane. Mark in Marin County here. If only the FX30 had open gate / 6K resolution to take advantage of its 24MP sensor. Absolutely no idea why Sony left that feature out (espescially since 4K resolution pays the penalty in rolling shutter already). I guess the problem would be with the FX30 potentially overheating if shooting in 6K. I might pick up a used GH6 as a B or C cam, although i really do wish the low light performance were a bit better. Darn. Oh, forgot to mention that your footage is looking good.

    Great comparison and both great cameras.
    What I don’t understand about the FX30 though, being Sony’s ‘cinema’ line, is the lack of shutter angle.
    And also the crop in 4k 120 is massive. Gives you an even smaller image area than mft.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy

    Love my GH6, but have always been a Pan M4/3 user, since 2011 anyway. You didn't mention that the GH6 has no overheating problems thanks to the cooling fan, so there is no recording limit. Also the Pan menus seem the easiest to use.

  • @neulandlotse

    I bought the GH6. Even though I thought a moment about the FX 30. And why? The FX30 on a gimble could give me a handling like my old GH2 but in 4k 50p. But so many Pana-lenses later i would like to keep them. Just for the autofocus an extra camera with extra lenses, cards an reader is not efficient at all. So I‘m still happy with my GH5s + GH6

  • @isavkov
    @isavkov Год назад +3

    To be honest, both cameras are exceptionally good. It all depends on your own needs, and if you already invested in one of those systems, e-mount or m4/3 mount. The other possible reason to choose one of those will be the need of autofocus. If you don’t need autofocus, GH6 is good, why not.

    This would seem like a simple choice for the lens ecosystem alone with M43 offering so many great, cheap options. Only comparing the output and features, I'd also give it to the GH6. It's funny that you said the AF was so much better on the Sony (which is probably true) , but you couldn't see that from the sample video you showed. It's also worth noting that as soon as you stop down the lens, the Sony will get drastically worse than the GH6 in terms of AF due to a less advanced contrast AF on the Sony (as it ONLY uses contrast AF in that situation).

  • @AllThingsFilm1
    @AllThingsFilm1 Год назад +2

    I have the FX30, and it's great. I am considering getting a second camera. And it may just be the Panasonic S5iix. I started out on Panasonic, and I've always liked the skin tones it captures over Sony. Sony skin tones tend to lean towards red or yellow. But, I've also created an S-Cinetone type profile with Cine2 that I find to be superior to S-Cinetone, where the skin tones are fantastic. With that said, I am also looking at the Sony ZV-E1. But, after hearing that the A7Cii will mostly like be released around this summer, I am holding out to see what that brings to the table. A lot of great choices out there. Including some Canon. Particularly, the Canon R8 looks good at $1,499. So, there's that. There are almost too many choices at this point.

    • @Aviciiz
      @Aviciiz Год назад +1

      There's definitely something special happening with that V-log profile. I often shoot with the FX6 and love it but sometimes feel like my S5 would've gotten a better image.

    Hi! As a little background, I'm a satisfied Lumix m4/3 user but before the anouncement of the new S5ii I thought Panasonic was going to be stuck forever with its archaic focus system so after 6 years of using my lumix m4/3 camera I decided to switch to Sony for the superb autofocus. I chose the fx30 as it was the almost perfect camera. It had all good things from the fx3 but for a much more affordable price with the aps-c sensor. So I ordered it after having watched a ton of reviews and tests, where people on youtube claimed that it was all around an almost perfect camera. I received it and checked it out, made all the settings right and did some testing to see how/if I could work with it to replace/improve on my former Lumix camera. I found some flaws however that don't seem very small, I could enumerate them but maybe it's not required for this comment. The biggest of the flaws was its REALLY BAD IBIS system :(( I'm thoroughly dissatisfied with it and I'm wondering what to do?! I can't use the camera with such an IBIS as I shoot events and my former camera was very good for handling walking and movement, unlike the sony which sensor makes erratic movements and sensor shifts that render the video footage useless (Now having watched a ton of more videos I see that all sony mirrorless cameras, even the most expensive ones, behave like this concerning their IBIS) :(( I don't want to buy and shoot with a gimbal, as it would be another complication for my setup and Catalyst products seem to be an innovative way to deal with this issue, however the shutter speed must be really high in order to overcome the motion blur during stabilization. I tried with shutter speed of 200 and the footage came out still muddy. Maybe at above 250 it starts to work. This workflow of stabilizing each clip in Catalyst however seems very inefficient and time and energy consuming. So my final question after this whole dissapointment is: IS THERE A WAY TO STABILIZE SONY FOOTAGE without so much hassle? I have informed myself about a few possible solutions, mostly adding weight to the camera, but for event videography I don't want to add a ton of weight and go around with it all day long and as a result it doesn't help that much either. So I don't see as a solution these options as gimbals, having a heavy rig or extensive stabilization and render times in post. I tried handles with moderate success but the sensor shifts still persist and make the videos unpleasent the least. WILL EVERYBODY JUST STOP PROMOTING CAMERAS THAT HASN'T TESTED personally and properly. If any of the audience knows some solution for the Sony IBIS problem, I'll be happy to hear it. If I don't find any, it would be a pity, but I'd have to sell this otherwise potentionally good all around camera. Thank you.

    Great comparison, especially for me, as I still can't make up my mind which one to buy. Great AF on the Sony, but it lacks waveform, viewfinder, or SSD recording, like the GH6 has, and is more expensive. I think I'm going to have to hire them both, and see if I can live with the GH6's inferior AF, or the Sony's lack of viewfinder, sadly, I think the perfect camera, is a combination of them both!

    Thanks for the test, great job !
    Filming solo with the GH6 is painful. When Panasonic decides to develop a proper AF system, one that functions for real, things shall change. But until then...
    The fan and cooling system of the FX30 let it run for hours (and my place reached 43°C, in the shade, last summer).
    I filmed for about 10 years with GH3/GH4/GH5 (all sorts of stuff, mostly small to medium scale productions) and borrowed a GH6 before buying. That was enough to understand how more advanced is the FX30, and not only in the AF aspects (let's be honest, GH line-up has NO real functioning AF... the thing is a joke).
    This Sony camera is about video production and fits into professional workflows without problems, and my editor colleagues love it ! The 16 bit raw clean HDMI out signal is such a gift for post-production teams.
    GH cameras are nice for short films and ads, but you need a focus operator and lots of light. If one of those is missing, you'll have headaches trying to chose only sharply focused and well lit sequences !
    Panasonic GH used to be some sort of a standard... not anymore.
    Why is it that not a single cinema camera is fitted with an MFT sensor ? Have a think.
    Thank you MFT sensors, but you had your time. Now your performances have already hit the ceiling (with the GH5)... let's move on.
    The 6.2K sensor of the FX30 delivers a clean signal (internally or through HDMI) and can be used for superb results (and also enables zoomed-in sequences, thanks to the "Clear Image Zoom" function, up to 1.5x in 4K with no loss). Large-scale productions use it as a crash-cam, and it fits perfectly with sooc material from Alexas and Venices... it's no mystery why !

    I have the Lumix GH6. More recording options on it. Its made for video production work. Sony is awesome for photography. Those Sony mirrorless cameras overheat when I shoot long videos on them, I never had this issue on the GH6. I never had the FX-30 though, I believe it has a fan, APS-C is a larger sensor than Micro 4/3, but I can't tell the difference though, they both look great.

      Wait until you film real fiction/documentary films under hot weather conditions (which will be standard very very soon) and you shall change you positions. Because the fan and cooling system of the FX30 let it run for hours (and my place reached 43°C, in the shade, last summer).
      Then, you have an opinion about a camera you don't own... weird !
      I filmed for about 10 years with GH3/GH4/GH5 and borrowed a GH6 before buying. That was enough to understand how more advanced is the FX30, and not only in the AF aspects (let's be honest, GH line-up has NO real functioning AF... the thing is a joke).

    I moved from Panasonic to Sony because of the shocking AF. I had used a GH4 for many years and always used manual focus. I started video filming back in the 1980's and AF wasn't really usable so the GH4 didn't bother me but when I started self recording you start to appreciate that decent AF is needed. I would have stayed with panasonic if the AF was decent but having switched to the FX30 I wouldn't go back even though the GH7 looks like it's solved the AF issues.

      Probably not exclusively for live streaming, but it's an improved video camera for shooting up to 4k120p and 5.9k. If you at all film, it's a huge upgrade and the colour science is way nicer than the GH5. Overall, it's a big upgrade but for live streaming at 1080p or 4K, you might not notice a big difference due to the live streaming quality.

    Well for photography, the FX30 is about as slow and cumbersome as they can come. You literally can’t imagine how badly the photography function is crippled in the FX30. No mode dial. No drive dial. No AF mode toggle. No EVF. It’s absolutely unwieldy to take a photograph and then you have to navigate back to your video settings.

    I want to teach videography and use a good camera... The question is: 1.- Buying a GX85 very compact camera in a low price and record quality video with: "Atomos Ninja V" or: 2 .- Forget about the compactness of the Gx85 and go for a more expensive and newer camera like the GH6 camera and not use the "Atomos Ninja V". it is an easy or difficult choice, for a person as experienced as you?

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  Год назад +3

      The GH6 is a better option over using a Ninja with a GX85. It's more stuff to carry around and more batteries to charge. The GH5 MK II is a great camera for the price as well if the GH6 is too expensive.

    Adding a hybrid comparison is a bit unfair. The FX30 is purely in the cineline which is why it has no viewfinder.

    I can't take photos. I'm shooting a video. Many years. I've been waiting for the Sony AX-800 and it hasn't arrived and it won't. So I started looking around for cameras that could shoot video. It's been a tragedy for a long time.
    But 2022 was a very fertile year and the GH6 was one of the favorites. The brake was the automatic focus. So when the first news of the FX30 came out, I sped up and bought the first one that was available.
    The video doesn't lie. Dynamic stabilization is a weakness, but excellent focus compensates for this disadvantage. You just have to learn to live with the pros and cons. I just have a different camera for walking videos.
    After experience with previous cameras, I was very concerned about the camera being 422 and 10bit. I wanted a reserve for video editing. S-Cinetone almost eliminates this need, and the need for color or contrast adjustments has also dramatically decreased.
    Against the FX-3, there is more noise in difficult lighting conditions, but this can also be solved with suitable lenses. Also, until recently, the FX-30 had the advantage of focus breathing compensation (especially for GM lenses) against the FX-3. However, this has been resolved with the latest firmware update for the FX-3.
    I'm glad I bought the FX-30 and it makes me happy and makes beautiful videos.

    No one, NO ONE, compares the LUMIX GH5S (the one with an S!!!!) for video comparison.
    I don't know why, panasonic made this camera for video!!! It's better in everything in the video specs, specially in low light.

    I used to use Panasonic cameras to video weddings but sold them in the end because of the yellow jaundice colour cast which I could never really fix to my liking. To me its striking in the comparison shots. What makes pleasant colour is subjective I guess, I had hoped that Panasonic had migrated away from this as it stops me purchasing what are otherwise great cameras....

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  Год назад +3

      If you shot with a GH5, that camera had a green tint to it. It's fixed on the S5, S5II, GH6, GH5II, etc. :)

    Me pregunto cual es el grado de profesionalismo al usar un microfono que te tapa la cara en vez de uno que te da facilidad de hablar, un lavalier por ejemplo, quieres que tu video luzca mas "fancy", en resumidas cuentas si lo que necesitas es grabar en video consiguete una camcorder y entonces si eres propfesional, si necesitas " versatilidad " entonces puedes usar cualquiera de estas camaras con la facilidad de tomar fotos que una camcorder no te serian igual.

    The only thing dead about mft is the brain cells of those certain youtubers who make such a silly claim. Mft is far from dead, the gh6 is currently still easily the best hybrid camera for buck (August 2023). Sony has auto focus in it's favour but you sacrifice either a bunch of cash or a bunch of features to get it and thus is why gh6 wins hands down!

  • @Abba555

      The GH5S is one of my favorites, but it's not better than either of these two just on a technical level. The GH5S has the 1.8x crop which I love instead of the 2.0, but the color science, resolutions, and bitrates aren't on par with either.

      That's an opinion and not fact. "Pro" use is anything where you get paid to make a video. Each of these are capable. The GH6 kills the FX30 in a number of ways which I mentioned in this video and vice versa.
