Then she asked, why did these guys agree to play all this crazy [stuff] (we were watching a Doors concert in which Jim started improvising poetry) and I said, look. Ray Manzarek was trained to be a concert pianist, but the Chopin competition etc. didn't pay the bills. He knew Jim from college or something. Jim wanted to set his poetry to music, why not. Robbie had studied flamenco guitar and was excellent but was tired of it, and thought it was a dead end. So they all got together and their improvisations were good. They decided they needed a drummer. Somehow they got hold of John, who was a talented jazz drummer but not making it big, and he worked with them one night. As he walked home after the session, he was saying to himself, "OK, I'm in a band with a psychotic." (That's from his autobiography.) They all got what they wanted. It changed music forever and can't be equaled. "Best" is maybe not the word. I can't think of the best word.
